This is a rock-solid restaurant, that would be rock-solid no matter where it was located. The fact that it's on the Oregon coast, practically in California, makes the restaurant even more unique. It's got a really interesting menu, a good list of cocktails and wines, and a full bar. Not to mention the fact that the service is excellent. It's a small space, so if you really want to go, the best thing you can do is make a reservation. One thing that I would suggest is that you plan to come hungry. The portion sizes are amazing. I rate the food close to 5, service was a 3. We walked by this place the other day, after we had already eaten lunch, but it looked very inviting so we decided to try it. They open at 11am and we came before 11:30 and there was only 1 other couple seated. The waitress was very polite and friendly. We were seated quickly, given menus and water. One lady in our group can't eat gluten and has a few other allergies so she ask if she could eat the "soup of the day". Our waitress replied "I'm pretty sure". My friend asked if she was sure or pretty sure. She said she would check but never came back. Then the weird part happened. We had placed our orders, the other tables were now full, but nobody had food, except that one party that arrived before us. We assume there was some problem in the kitchen but she never came back to explain or apologize for the very long wait. Not to us, or anyone. When she eventually brought the food out, there was no apology or acknowledgement for the long wait. And she brought my friend a salad instead of the soup which she had inquired about. She did explain that she couldn't get an answer to her allergy question so she wanted to be safe. But wouldn't you tell the customer before just bringing the food? Anyway the food was all delicious!! I ordered the halibut sliders which were cooked perfectly. The "soup of the day" was okay but needed salt and pepper, which we requested. They brought us 2 pepper shakers, no salt. wow.....this used to be our special occasion dinner place but we stopped in for lunch today and we were disappointed. Only one server and she was not attentive (new maybe?). The side salad was void of dressing so I asked for some dressing and it never arrived until we were done she suddenly remembered. My bolognese was ok except for $9 for 3 shrimp added ($3 a shrimp??). My wife had the hazelnut pesto pasta and it was really bland. On each side of us were tables that had not been completely bussed - crumbs and food pieces on the seats, floor and table. We come up to the Oregon Coast every couple years and have ALWAYS loved Brookings Oregon. Several years ago we asked for recommendations and heard several strongly positive recommendations for the Black Trumpet Bistro. Yesterday, we returned for our fourth visit. And it lived up to our expectations as one of the finest restaurants we have visited...big cities, small, other countries. A small restaurant where service and food are the memorable combination. The whipped ricotta crostini was a start to die for. What a complex blend of flavors from the bread to the sun-dried and roasted tomatoes, balsamic glaze....wow. I love chicken marmalade and most often find my order leaves me if I should stop trying. Not here! The chicken and mushrooms, marmalade sauce over the perfect mashed potatoes....the best EVER! Driving through brookings on our road trip and stopped for a bite. Saw this place has good reviews and was naturally intrigued. Came in around 5 was seat quick, got treated with water and bread which was really good. I had the Teres Major steak and added on the Salmon and it was great. Steak was amazing and the garlic mashed potatoes complemented it very well. Our server, Jenny I believe, was super nice and lovely and gave us tips about where to go next. The bistro is small but has a nice upscale vibe with prices not being outrageous. Overall, it is very worth it and the staff and food are excellent. 5 stars read more

Such a charming restaurant. My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance. Small but very intimate. The service was good and the food was delicious. What we ordered: -Steamed Clams (especially loved that came with it) -Baked Brie -Caprese Classico (my favorite) -Special: Cavatappi pasta with bacon and scallops. Also their house foccacia paired with balsamic was amazing. We also had their house tiramisu, not the best tiramisu I've had and probably worth skipping next time. This place is completely my vibe. Small bistro, not too loud, warm and genuine service. This place knows they have good food, but rather than be pretentious about it, they are excited to show you. Really excellent Cioppino and Beef Stroganoff. The cioppino was loaded with seafood and veg. Loved the bite of fennel. Not overly spiced so the flavor of the shrimp, scallops, and fish shine. The stroganoff is made with goat cheese which was a delightful change for us. Served with pappardelle pasta, tender steak, and mushrooms, this dish was exceptional. Jamie, our server, kept tabs on us and offered good advice on what to order. The only drawback was the bread. Not focaccia, perhaps a peasant bread? It was a nice flavor, but fell apart so easily that it was difficult to dip in the olive oil and impossible to dip in the Cioppino. It certainly didn't detract from the meal. But, personal preference, it was the only element of the meal that we did not finish. Dessert was a creme brûlée of the day (Brown Sugar Bourbon) that had delicious caramel notes. If we lived in the area, we certainly would be regulars. read more

We came to Black Trumpet Bistro for my birthday this year. We started with their Oysters Rockefeller, it was my first time trying them and they were to die for, just melt in your mouth deliciousness. Next the fellow ordered his usual steamer clams but these were no ordinary steamer clams the brine was so rich and flavorful and they came with a nice ciabatta. I ordered the scallops and pasta special, the scallops were succulent and juicy in a delicious sauce. I wasn't wild about the bread they serve on the side, but it was the only thing that wasn't absolutely top notch. I gotta tell you, I can't stop thinking about this meal, it was that good. The service, the atmosphere and the food, 5 stars all around. AND they gave me a piece of tiramisu by on accounta it was my birthday. read more

We are from out of town and just found this place on Yelp. The local pancake house was packed. Turned out we are glad we had to look elsewhere for breakfast. This is a cute, small bistro. We did see a bar. I had sweet and savory waffle with bacon and arugula. Sounds.....different and I honestly was hesitant. It was delicious! We had a nice 2-person table by the window for our anniversary reservation; the dining area is small (a little noisy) so we were pleased to get in. The server, Jenny (sp?) was very friendly and helpful. The meals and drinks were yummy - brown butter old fashioned (super creamy, didn't taste like butter, thank goodness), focaccia bread, clam chowder, beef stroganoff for me (server said it's a long-time favorite menu item), ribeye steak for hubby (he's picky and enjoyed it), and a chocolate cake type dessert that was a delicious substitute for the tiramisu that was sold out. We were driving through Brookings and stumbled upon this place for lunch. Cute little downtown area, we came in right when they were changing over to the dinner menu. Our waitress was so nice, he was so attentive and explained the menu great. We ordered the baked brie, chili lime shrimp and caprese salad to start. All were yummy, my only complaint was the shrimp could've used more flavor. For entrees we got the stroganoff and the scallop special. Honestly the scallop special was not what I was hoping for, it came out more like a salad versus scallops with sautéed spinach, so that was a bummer. But the scallops were tasty and cooked well. I have not been here before but I've only heard great things. That they are the most upscale restaurant in town. My second clue is that Yelp has a reserve button. Thank Goodness I reserved a place on the same week day for lunch. At 12:45P in this town, there is never a wait to get seated anywhere except maybe on a holiday weekend. When I arrived, the restaurant was full. I did not need to say a word, I was pointed to my table. I already knew what I wanted, the Steak & Blue salad. When you see steak medallion on the menu, it's their delicious teres major cut which is one step below filet mignon. Very very tasty salad. Great service. I celebrated an early Father's Day by also ordering a dessert. The creme brulee. The best I've ever had. What a fabulous restaurant. Drove up from Klamath Ca for my birthday dinner, I was really hoping this place would be as amazing as the reviews since we had come a bit out of the way for a nice dinner. Honestly, blew us out of the water. We had the stuffed mushrooms to start that were so extremely flavorful but could still distinguish the mushroom taste from the stuffing. I had ordered the beat salad that was HUGE and was able to share between 3 people with some leftover. The bread was divine, the fresh herb flavor was amazing. I had the scallop special, was filling without being too much food. My aunt ordered the steak which again was HUGE and more than enough for 3 meals lol my boss ordered the prawns that she absolutely gushed over. The portions were more than enough and the flavors were perfect. I've been abstaining from drinking and it being my birthday I definitely partook in a couple drinks. The dirty martini was good, a little heavy on the brine but being a savory girl, it wasn't bad. The lavender bees knees martini however was perfect. I'm not huge on sweet drinks but the lemon and lavender paired perfectly with the sweetness without being overpowering. Everyone enjoyed their drinks so much. Wow!! Just traveling through Brookings and didn't know what to expect. We were so charmed and delighted by the Black Trumpet Bistro we went two nights in a row! Oysters Rockefeller served cold, raw. Then, the second time, one was cooked, and two were hot but not cooked. (You be the judge). Vegetarian chily served lukewarm. Then, the second time hotter, but terribly tasting, could not eat. Ribeye steak ordered medium. This surprised me by how good it was because I had given up on this 1 star disaster of a cook. The steak was enjoyable, and so was the gorgonzola cream sauce served with it. This steak was better, in fact, than the one I had the night before at Kismet's Landing in Reedsport. I admire the servers who had to buffer the complaints (also table left of me) ...always pleasant. As for ambiance, I had a table where I sat in a ceiling spotlight. Other tables were just like this but not all. Sitting in the spotlight is stressful rather than relaxing or cozy, so there is that. The food is excellent at this restaurant. A great menu and they have both wine/cocktails. The decor is simple but nice. The service was the only let down. It was a Saturday, we had reservations but there were tables not cleaned and the staff was slow to come to our table when we got seated with menus and slow to take our order. One person to clear/clean tables help with water/silverware could easily make the difference in service level. The food definitely makes up for the wait and slow staff. read more
