Very hip community supporting coffee shop in Venice, CA. They offer a good selection of difference coffee blends for sale with a solid offering of familiar coffee options. Their pasties are above average. Coffee is tasty and meaningful - history, origin, and etc. Where Groundwork Coffee stands apart is their hip hangout concept. The space is open and inviting. It is vey comment to see people working or studying in this cool hip coffee shop. To boot, it's located in Venice, CA, just around the corner from While Foods on Lincoln. There's plenty of food options nearby. Overall, cool space to ride your bicycle or Bird to. For those driving a car, there's a small parking lot with limited street parking in front. Pretty non-descript from the outside, which is good, because it means you've got to be in the know to find this... a lost tourist might peek inside, not thinking it's "Venice hip" enough, and closes the door: off to an over-priced and touristy board walk cafe where the locals are not to be found. Right around the corner from Whole Foods on Lincoln, street parking only which isn't too hard. Being local, I like to try out coffee places around LA; Groundwork has been on my list for a few weeks now. In desperate need of my caffeine fix I'm ordering an almond latte with 1 espresso shot. It's good. Despite the espresso shot it's not too strong, which makes me wonder... All in all: good coffee. Their vegan banana bread is delicious: recommended by the super sweet pink-haired barista. Usually I'm not too sure about these recommendations (is it yesterday's left-over and do they have to get rid of it?). I'm not vegan, but every now and then I'll try it. This is one I'd order again! Audience consists of a nice mix: you don't have to be overly hip, fall in a certain age group or whatnot. I see a variety of customers, all happily sipping their drinks, chatting, working on their laptops, reading, writing yelp reviews. It's close to my home, so I'll be a regular. Little places like this are refreshing and keep the community thriving. We do have a fair amount of these in LA, but in my opinion we can't have enough. While visiting LA, I needed to find a place to break off from my friends to get a little work done. After a quick search of coffee shops near my AirBNB that had WiFi, I quickly came across Groundwork Coffee Co. I was able to find a seat pretty easily on Sunday morning at about 9:30am, but worth noting I got lucky with my timing, because by 10am it was packed and the lines were out the door. They have many options for both coffee and tea and some really awesome looking food. I ordered a nitro cold brew to start, which was smooth and strong. Eventually I was starving and torn between a few menu items. Ultimately, I ordered the breakfast burrito and it did not disappoint. It was filling and the sauces were delicious. This place is quickly becoming my new go to work spot. They have a front room as well as a back room. The backroom is good for more serious work while the front room has much more of a cafe vibe. Importantly, the back room HAS OUTLETS, something that a lot of places in Venice do not have to encourage customer turnover. I have not gotten any food yet, but the drinks are great. They have a very large tea collection, including oolong (I am a big oolong guy as it inhibits the absorption of fat and increases metabolism in addition to all of its antioxidants). I have also gotten the jade green tea which is quite delicious. Their almond milk chai is good, not amazing. read more

We stopped here twice on our recent stay in VB. Great coffee, tried the fresh baked zucchini loaf, monkey bread and blueberry muffins. We sat outside in the courtyard at the side of the building. Popped in here before taking my friend surfing and I have to say I'm very impressed! I was running a bit late so I didn't experience the ordering process, but the breakfast burrito and iced coffee waiting for me were great. I loved the addition of the peppers in the breakfast burrito! We had a table near the door and if you're looking to stay a bit longer there's a small room behind the serving bar (and across from the bathroom!) where you can sit and do work (it was much quieter than the main room). The staff is very nice, but the people in line are really slllooooowww. Talk, talk, and more talk. Geesh! You can tell this is Venice. It's got that certain grittiness, dirtiness, no...no...earthiness. Yes, that's it. Rustic yet artsy inside. Outside, a small area to sit...but alot of smokers...cough cough. Better to sit in the limited bench seating they have in front. The coffee is pre-brewed for drip in carafes, several of them, one of my pet peeves. But it makes for free refills, easy. Fun place to visit. As soon as I walk in I feel the stress of the day melt away. I know that soon my taste-buds will be delivered a kick of amazing coffee with the added benefit of caffeine. And I feel as though there are no judgments here. The whole atmosphere is laid back and a bit DIY. As you help yourself to the coffee in the middle of the room, if you are not going for fancy, but the pure and easy caffeine delivery method. Decent menu, decent prices, and decent service. I ordered the grilled cheese and substituted the olive bread for sourdough. I was a bit disappointed because the bread was really hard and the mustard was overwhelming and ruined my sandwich. The side salad was mediocre. I ordered a rooibus tea for my meal and the tea bags they use are large. So large that the tea was overwhelming within minutes. So overall, my meal was not a hit, 1 star. The reason my rating is higher is because I liked the ambiance. It got a bit crowded by the time I left but I felt comfortable and would have probably loved the place if the food had been better. Groundwork Coffee Company is an old-fashioned cafe serving organic roasted coffee in Venice. The shop is super cool. It's located inside an old building that's not much to look at from the outside. It was the original roasting location for Groundwork, before it became too small. It makes sense, because from the outside, it just looks like an old warehouse. The front doors are wood, with worn pain - something you don't often see in LA. Inside, the ceiling has the same wood with worn white paint. A skylight makes the cafe bright and airy, despite the lack of windows. On the left wall, there's an antique icebox turned into a refrigerator. It's got a wood frame, old fashioned brass handles, and a built in mirror. Along the right wall, there's an old apothecary cabinet filled with vintage coffee urns. Groundwork is small, and there's not much room to enjoy your coffee inside. However, they do have outdoor seating. It is California, after all. Who wouldn't want to be outside? The baristas were so friendly and happy - they love their job and it shows. Groundwork roasts their own coffee, which consists mostly of various blends. The brewed coffee is served from carafes in a center island opposite a display of pastries. I had a taste of the Angel City light roast, and found it bright and smooth with a bit of fruit to it. A decent cup of coffee to come out of a big pot. But I was more interested in seeing what the espresso had to offer. It was superb. It had a rich, nutty Brazil background, a smooth hint of citrus, and noticeable caramel sweetness from tongue-tip through aftertaste. The crema was thick fluffy and the shot had hefty body and solid mouthfeel. My favorite thing about Groundwork (besides the espresso) is definitely the antique decor and old-time authenticity. There's no better-than-you snobbery about the place, and its unique decorations and feel are not often found in Los Angeles. Next time you're in Venice, step into Groundwork to enjoy some old-fashioned charm and hospitality with your coffee. Oh, and enjoy an espresso. Mmmmmm! read more

First visit to Groundwork Coffee but would definitely come back if I'm the in the area again. Interesting set up as there is some seating in the front, the middle of the building is their coffee counter and kitchen and there is also a back room with additional seating that I didn't know about till I had to go use the restroom. Got a Mexican mocha which was delicious. It might have been a powder mocha mix as it was a little thick for a hot drink but still none the less tasty. (It brought me back to my Diedrich Coffee days) Also ordered the mushroom toast as I am a mushroom fanatic and I was very impressed. 3 different mushrooms that did not include button mushrooms which was nice. Sometimes button mushrooms can dull the flavors of the more exotic variety mushrooms. I had originally order it togo as I wasn't sure if I would finish the whole thing. But it came out on a plate and I had sometime so I found a place to sit and dug in. Ended up finishing all 4 pieces and the salad it came with. Waiting for a friend to get off work, I ordered an iced green tea (I forget which one) and studied at this Groundworks. WiFi was good and I got quite a bit done. It's a good study spot with limited power outlets, so it's a good spot to enjoy a drink, chat a little bit, and study just for a little bit and not for a long time since it isn't a big space and most people aren't lingering that long. read more

With several cafe options within walking distance in Venice, it was the coffee at Groundwork that tipped the scales, making it my daily habit. Unlike Starbucks, where the brew option is only occasionally better than the overrated and bitter PIke's Place roast, Groundwork always has a wide selection of great blends to suit many tastes. My favorites, the Bitches Brew and Black Gold are available every day along with a few other staples. They also rotate through some of their other usually-good flavors. The menu and food are good, including breakfast burritos and sandwiches. There is an assortment of pastries and snacks although not everyone likes the communal, self-serve concept that goes with them. But let's be honest, if you live in Venice you are probably not that germaphobic. Service is efficient, if lacking politeness at times. Just know that you are not special. Wait in line, place your order, pay, wait, eat, drink, done. Look at the bright side, since it is partially self-serve you can even have your coffee and sip it in line while you wait to pay. Can't beat that with a stick. Seating is limited but there are a few stools and table spaces to eat or read. I do not think they have wi-fi, which is actually a good thing as there really isn't space for a bunch of people on laptops (try 212 Pier if you need to sit and work for a couple hours). I love the vibe at Groundwork. But if you don't like Venice or its eccentric people, you probably won't like Groundwork. Because that's who goes here. I made my own avo toast by ordering everything separately: fried eggs, 1/2 avocado on the side and a side of sourdough bread toasted...AND I got a cappuccino, all of that plus 15% tip came out just under $10! The avo toast here is $10 by itself obviously it's not what I got, but I got the main ingredients covered lol. I know avo toast is a LA staple and I've seen restaurants charging up an arm and a leg for it, do not only the prices here are amazing but also the fact I was able to get my own ingredients on the side a la carte style was great. Went here after lunch today, and was blown away by the salted caramel iced latte. Perfectly balanced, smooth, with an amazing aftertaste- nutty, slightly sweet, slightly salty. This location seems to be embattled. They are normally excellent, serving espresso woodfired roasted, with depth and complexity. It was reminiscent of the espresso I used to enjoy at Danny Meyer's Gramercy Tavern in New York City. But twice now in January 2021, on Rose Street, they tried serving me inferior beans, that tasted like a two-dimensional joke and a request for closure of their business. I had to ask for a refund both times. Now four times before that, they were spot on. And I could smell on those other lackluster occasions they were serving the right stuff to other customers. Went around midday on a Monday. I went in looking for a good, local-roasted- coffee. I've heard of this place since I usually by their coffee at the grocer. What's good: The location is great. Parking on the street or on the side lot. Inside felt open, airy, spacious. Nice natural light. Coffee is great! I got a nitro, cold-brew which was smooth af. What sux: The customer service could be better. The staff seemed mostly interested in each other then me ordering. The person who took my order didn't hand me a receipt, so I stood there for a couple minutes wondering if I was done or not. Then the person pouring the drink, didn't notify me when my drink was complete so I just stood there again waiting a few minutes till I asked if that was my drink just sitting there. Ugh, totally watched a waiter position misplaced food on a plate while I was waiting for bathroom. Bare handed waiter was rearranging shrimp I think it was just before exiting kitchen. I saw the whole thing. So gross. That plate was then served to a customer and he wiped the sauce off his fingers on his apron. Grossed me out. I'd rather the shrimp be out of place than touched by bare hands. The green tea I ordered was great but the image of the plating issue ruined that spot for me. read more

I don't much like coffee, but this is a great place. It smells really nice and roast-y in here, and the community vibe of this place is just outstanding. The outdoor seating area is really cozy, and everything about this place feels just happy and right. I'm glad it's around... even if I do wish they served milkshakes or something instead. (As an aside, their hot cocoa is OK; their Mexican hot chocolate tastes good for about three sips and then all of a sudden, starts tasting super-gross. This place was a lifesaver when I needed to order and pick-up a large breakfast and coffee order for a film crew. The order was submitted late the day prior to needing picked up and I was concerned that they would dismiss it as I placed it online after they closed. However, Groundwork Coffee crew on the morning of 2/14/22 (Valentine's Day) was ON IT! When I called to check-in on my order in the morning they told me it was already prepared and ready for pickup. Lovely place with delicious coffee . Latte here is one of the best in the area. There is a very nice and friendly barista. Convenient location. You can grab a cup of coffee with you, and take a beautiful walk to the beach to meet the sunset, a leisurely way to the beach will take just 15 minutes. I will definitely go there again. read more

Such a cute spot! I loved it here as they have a decent amount of seating for how small the location is. The second set of seating is kinda hidden as you have to walk passed the register area and there is more tables. Depending on the spot you get there are plugs for you to charge up your electronics. I loved the music they had playing the the vibe the employees put off. I will for sure be back here to hang out. As for parking it is all street parking that has a two hour limit and the meter-maids do check so don't think you can get away with longer without adding more change. read more

Favorite coffee shop hands down. Excellent service, coffee, tea and food. They ruined me because now the bar is very high and it's hard for me to have coffee from most coffee shops If you like nut milk, they make their own cashew milk and it taste so much better than any other nut milk.
