I met up with a coworker at Groundwork to get some work done alongside lunch. Social distancing was encourage inside the cafe when you order. You get to pick up your drinks right after you order while the food comes later to your table. The cafe offers only outdoor seating. They have a lovely space outside for customers to enjoy their food and drinks with a splash of LA beach air and sun. I have visited the cafe before but never tried their food until now and WOWEE was I missing out!! My friend and I ordered the bitches brew hash and breakfast tacos. Hers looked amazingly good and mine was basically the best breakfast tacos I've had. Everything tasted freshly made and the sauces were to die for. We paired our lunch with hot matcha lattes with a drizzle of honey (not pictured), which was what we needed to battle the chilly Venice air. Apart from that, they did also have an awesome playlist on if you're into old school Beyoncé. We had a great time working and eating at Groundwork. The crew there were extremely helpful and friendly. The first time I decided to try groundwork coffee i encountered terrible customer service. The attitude from the cashier was not it, it made you feel like an inconvenience to them. The horchata coffee was a 2/10 not worth the price. I tried it again today and decided to go for a matcha and it was the most disappointing matcha ever. As you can see in the picture it is 98% milk and 2% matcha powder (not even properly mixed). I am extremely sad that I spent $8 on a cup of milk with 6 ice cubes that looked a little melted. Groundwork coffee is my absolute favorite coffee - I've been buying their coffee for years from Whole Foods since discovering their excellent roasted beans. But I never thought to go the cafe in person, & am so pleased I tried it for the first time. Fantastic coffee (drip coffee for me, black, NO additions) & super friendly cheerful staff, with plenty of outdoor seating. The residential neighborhood, free parking on the street, red & white brick, yellow outdoor tables, all made for a colorful and pleasurable breakfast experience. The vegan burrito 'bite' with tofu was just the right amount for a person with a small appetite, and the vegan blueberry muffin was deliciously light - not as gummy & heavy as I've found vegan pastries in other cafes. My friend liked her avocado toast with egg whites. Especially pleasing to me was the fact that, except for a single customer, not one person was hooked up to their laptop. There was a lot of chatter and laughter and socializing in the outdoor area . My heart sinks when I walk into a cafe and solitary people, sitting one per table, are engrossed in their laptops with dead silence all around -- like an Edward Hopper painting with human figures isolated & disconnected from each other within the same space. We had breakfast there and what a wonderful experience! First and foremost: the staff is the friendliest bunch of hard working people I've ever seen at a coffee shop. This is such a cool space, very unique, hipster to the core. Their coffee is fantastic, and they have a large shop here when you can purchase whole beans by the pound and their other products as well. I am partial to their Vietnamese coffee, strong and tasty, though I wish they had it available in a larger size, like the other drinks. A Venice staple, for sure! There is ample street parking and outdoor seating where you can eat, drink, chat and work. My go-to is the vegan breakfast burrito, as is. It is out of this world! You can taste the freshness of each ingredient and they all work tastefully together. I'm unsure if they're unstaffed or if I engage with folx who are having a bad day, but this is my reason for 3 stars. I'd give it a 3.5 if I could, though. I find that I have to get someone's attention to place/pickup an order. I think that to order ahead without an estimated window of time where you can pick up is frustrating. My biggest complaint is I think the beans and reputation of Groundwork's is a little better than the actual quality of their coffee and the service you get here. It's got the laidback atmosphere of a Starbucks and the baristas do their job well enough, but don't expect a serious third wave cup of joe or experience if that's what you are seeking. Example 1: asked for a pour over, waited 15 minutes, they forgot to make it, then served me drip coffee from their machine. Wasn't a bad cup of coffee, but not what I was looking for either. Example 2: Staff at register didn't know the difference between multiple beans they had for sale, needed to ask 2 different staff from the back about the flavor profiles. I ordered 1) Beehive Matcha Latte, 2) Fried egg sandwich 3) breakfast burrito, and 4) cold brew. 1) the Beehive Matcha Latte was a huge disappointment (see picture). It was basically oat milk and honey.. with a subtle matcha flavor. The very little matcha that WAS in the drink was not blended well. If they are going to charge $6.75 - they should ADD A LOT MORE MATCHA and learn how to blend it! Also - it was listed on their menu under "House Specialties"... yeah right... 2) the fried egg sandwich was not bad. Fried egg was well cooked (I.e. the yolk was runny in the middle). Bacon, cheese, and arugula was all well seasoned and tasted fine. My biggest gripe with this dish was the Sourdough bread. It was terrible - tasted stale (like cardboard). I usually love sourdough and have never really encountered bad sourdough bread until now. My advice is to invest in a better quality bread. Would have made the dish so much better. 3) the breakfast burrito had a lot of good / complimentary flavors but was a bit salty and was searching for the scrambled eggs in a sea of potatoes. 4) cold brew was fine... Other than some paltry stickers on the floor, no attempt to manage customer flow into safe social distancing at this very busy location. Indeed stock boxes left on the floor compounded this issue. While I waited for my food I would estimate that 10-15 other customers came within a foot of me. No system to tell waiting customers their orders are ready. My impression was they don't care or are just too Covid-fatigued to bother with pandemic safety. I won't be going in again. I had some free time yesterday afternoon and decided to check out Groundwork Coffee. My excitement soared as soon as I walked in. I had to absorb every little detail of this offbeat gem, quaintly hidden from the mainstream beach crowd and attention seekers. As for the coffee...It was AMAZING! Bitches Brew is the best dark roast blend I've ever had. Perhaps, an inspiration for some late night writing to the tunes of Miles and all the other jazz greats (take a bag home). I can't wait to try the Black Gold dark roast, and Black Magic Espresso. I was pleased that Groundworks offers hemp milk, and other vegan alternatives to dairy creamers. The vibe was friendly with smiling faces from employees and strangers alike. The girl who assisted me had a great sense of humor as I apologized for my seriously wrinkled dollars. The shop offers WiFi, however, seating is limited. There is one round table, and a longer shared space table, which could be a nice way to meet new people. So, if you want to get a little work done and you're accustomed to having an entire table to yourself, don't trip...just smile and get acquainted. Mixed feelings on this place. Enjoy that they have a parking lot but they need to update their menu on yelp. Went all the way there for the umami rice only to find out it's no longer on the menu. It was pretty busy, my order was taken by a young boy with bushy eye brows and a nose ring (didn't catch him name), but he didn't even attempt to be friendly. Literally blink at me, took my ordered, asked me to pay and then i stood there for like 15 seconds until I asked if everything was all set in which he just shook his head yes. Not very good hospitality. I ended up taking the toast, I took it to go because there wasn't any seats. It was pretty good. Just started working right around the corner of Groundwork Coffee Co. so low and behold... I have already been here 3 times in the last week. It's a solid coffee shop with many locations along the west side of LA. Great coffee, cool vibe, nice service. Did you know they also serve really good food? Nitro Cold Brew ($6) ; strong and solid. my type of coffee! beautiful round flavor that doesn't get old. Cali Club ($14) ; WOW - i actually think this sandwich is not what you'd think it would be just because of the bread it's served on. usually i imagine a club on a generic french roll or thick bread. but this sandwich is served on beautiful whole wheat sourdough, more thinly sliced.. which i absolutely adored. it allowed the contents of the sandwich come through (i.e. the delicious roasted tomato, herb aoli, salty bacon....) ugh. yum. Huli Huli Bowl ($14); what a fun name. i mean, who wouldn't want to get a huli huli bowl? well luckily, the taste lives up to the name. it's got asian flavors, it almost felt like a healthy home cooked meal i'd make at home. which is not something i'd like to order at a coffee shop when i'm out on a weekend adventure, but for a work lunch it was perfect. I come here a few times a month as I live around the corner. I normally don't have any issues but today I was presented an oat milk vanilla latte that tasted burnt. The first sip scorched the roof of mouth. I drove home and sat on my patio to drink my coffee and eat my bagel. I open my bagel and it's a plain toasted bagel without any cream cheese but I specifically asked them to add extra cream cheese.
