So I have been to Grow a few times for color and trim. Color was good, trim was not great. In addition, I have curly hair that I wear straight which no one can seem to style perfectly so I usually walk out wet because it's never great no matter where I go, which I understand. So I needed to get color and they had an opening today with Ashlee. I've never had an appointment with her but took it. She was nice and listened to what I needed done and told her, just color and no style. So she did my color and offered to style my hair. I hesitated because I always end up going home and redoing it, except today. Ashlee really listened to how I wanted my hair and what works for it and not. For the first time, I walked out of a salon looking like I have been in one. So appreciate her understanding my difficult hair AND doing it perfectly. Thanks! read more

I got the best men's haircut I've ever had from Joanne at Grow. Yes, I know that sounds like I'm exaggerating, especially talking about getting a men's cut at a hair salon, but it's true. No one has ever given me a better fade than her. I've always wanted a personal stylist that understood what I was looking for and what could work for me, and I'm happy to say that I finally found that with Joanne. I even followed her from another barber in Ballard because I knew she would give me the detail and attention that other hair stylist in Seattle haven't given me before. Not only does Joanne give great men's haircuts, but she is also willing to listen to all my life problem's and be the personal therapist that I've always wanted from my hair stylist. She shapes my hair beautifully without taking too much off, so I feel pretty, even though I'm a work in progress. Additionally, she's very funny and personable. I walked in today with no expectations but a nice blowout and more layers. What I got was more like an education. I have relatively healthy hair and don't heat style. But it isn't perfect and Ashlee was able to diagnose the cause and solution. She completely understood when I said "I'm just really bored with my hair." The layers she left me with flow beautifully and I now appreciate texture spray and hair oil. I highly recommend Ashlee at Grow! Also the front desk staff was very friendly. After 1 1/2 years of growing out my hair, I wanted a place that was knowledgeable about working with fussy Asian hair. I had a decent haircut (chopped off about 8 inches) that was stylized with beachy waves (see their social media as 80% of the haircuts featured have this look right now...), but the stylist just sort of left the front of my hair frame (where my bangs had grown out) alone. It was kind of awkward because the stylist didn't do anything to my grown-out bangs even after I brought it up - it gave me the sense that maybe the stylist didn't really understand my hair texture. The final product was not worth more than $60 for this cut. I wasn't particularly impressed with the salon's "eco-conscious" focus. Everyone was nice, and the service was, again, decent. I could probably get the same haircut and service for a bit cheaper. read more

Hannah @ Grow Salon is wonderful! She get my color just right and remembers the what my hair challenges are and works with it. I've never gone to a stylist on a regular basis because my hair is so crazy it just wasn't worth it. But Hannah is so talented and is doing such good things for my hair that I'm now going regularly. I love this place especially my stylist, Jessica! I first started going here when I was living in the building. Even though I have moved quite far away, I still make the effort to come here every several weeks to get my hair cut and colored because I trust Grow with my hair and know that they use amazing products. I had a great experience with Kate at Grow Salon. I moved here about a year ago and needed someone to do something to my hair that would make me feel beautiful. It's easy to feel gross in these Seattle winters and it's been a while. I had a few ideas that I threw at her and she listened very intently, made sure we agreed on what kind of cut and color we were doing and made it was something I could throw some dry shampoo in real quickly in the event I couldn't roll out of bed early enough to style it. I went in with long, overgrown, dense layers and left with a super fun "lob" (long bob, who knew) with ombre at the ends. The color is really nice, blended, and compliments the cut so nicely. It's exactly the low maintenance mop I wanted and very easy to style when I decide to. She wasn't pushy about products, but let me know what she used through the cut and color. I love that because I like taking mental notes during the process so I can try and recreate what's been done. I walked out with some Kevin Murphy powder puff which has changed my life. She also has an amazing personality. Doing a cut and color with a person who can't keep up with you for 2.5 hours is rough. She was super fun. I love Kate! read more

The stars are for Jackie. Since moving to Seattle, I have been a salon-hopper. After many bad experiences, I found Grow Salon and was fortunate enough to have Jackie cut my hair, she does an excellent job and is fun to chat with. I went to Grow Salon a third time, my hair in desperate need of help, and Jackie wasn't available. I booked with another hairstylist. My hair was cut in super short awkward layers on the top, to the point where I refuse to wear it down. After my hair was cut, she layered in a bunch of texturizing products and curled it up in a weird fashion. Perhaps she was hiding the mistakes? To the salon's credit, they offered help once I expressed my disappointment a few days later, but I don't know what I could do besides let it grow out. Months later, I am still upset with my hair. I have even been told by other hairstylists that they have no idea what she was thinking and that my hair is "screwed up." Moral of the story, find a good hairstylist and stick to them. For anyone looking for a nice salon and a great stylist, go to Grow and ask for Jackie. read more

Grow is an amazing salon for so many reasons. First of all the ambiance is friendly and inviting. It is not stuffy or pretentious, nor is it cold or impersonal. You feel welcomed and we'll attended to and everyone is super friendly. Aside from the environment, I was blown away by how amazing Sierra colored my hair! I am a natural blonde but get regular touch ups. I've seen Sierra twice and both times I've been over the moon with how my hair turned out! She has brightens it up but kept it natural and healthy. Ah, Kesli. What would my hair and I do without you? I have challenging hair. It's baby fine, but there's a ton of it. It grows super fast, and gets curlier the longer it gets. One slip of the scissors, and a cut goes from gorgeous to ghastly. It can be finicky with color. I have had some VERY BAD hair experiences, but never here. Kesli is a magician! Kesli has cut my hair for the last 8 years, and I will not let anyone else touch it again. She has managed my every hair whim, from Halle Berry pixie to the current lengthy ringlets, from near platinum to my mostly natural color, only better. I have loved every cut and color, because she just GETS it. She actually listens to her clients and offers terrific suggestions. She's always happy to teach styling tips and work with you to figure out what works for your hair and your life. I have referred countless friends to her shop, all of whom rave about her. Kesli now has two shops, uptown and downtown Ballard, and is hands-on at both. I've been getting my hair cut and colored by Molly for two or three years, and I cannot say enough good things about the experience. Molly listens carefully to what you're looking for, and then carries it out with great skill. She is also perfectly professional, and excels at the people skills that can make or break a trip to the hairstylist. She's very punctual, kind, smart and easy to get along with. I received a botched full foil service earlier in the day today at a different business in Capitol Hill and called around to see who might be able to squeeze me in to fix what I was rightfully unhappy with. I am writing this review for Hank, specifically, because I love him. I've been going to Hank for color for 2+ years in Los Angeles before he moved to Seattle. He is really an artist. I love my hair because he makes it look like it is a my real hair color (I'm gonna gray - shhhhhhhh... let's keep that between you and me). Before Hank, I had the hardest time finding someone who could make my hair look "real." Then I found Hank. I have no doubt that if you wanted to go green or blue or blonde - whatever - Hank would be the guy to do it for you, but - for sure - if you want it to look like you have the hair you had when you were 20, Hank can deliver. I booked an appointment last minute and got a cut lined up with Hannah. When I got there (with my ten year old son, who had to sit and wait for me!) they were extremely gracious and didn't act put out by having my son in their waiting area. Polite, prompt, and ridiculously welcoming. Hannah started with a consult to get idea of what I was looking for, as well a background for the best products to use. She washed with products specifically for my requests, followed by a step by step cut to make sure I was 100% okay with everything along the way. I was cutting off several inches and she totally understood my nerves and trepidation! I have been using the same colorist/stylist for years, which after moving to Seattle from Portland has resulted in a ton of extra miles! Joann is amazing! I have been bleaching my hair for over 11 years and it was sooo damaged and super white/yellowish color. I never trusted anyone with my hair until Joann! She had made my hair go from super brittle damaged brass box color to the most healthy, soft, and best blonde color I have ever seen my hair! I have been seeing her for about a year and I will never go to anyone else ever! (I even trusted her to chop off about 7inches!) Kesli (the owner of Grow) has been styling my hair since 2001! I have followed her to three different salons and I'm thrilled that she now has her own place. My hair is very thick and Kesli layers it beautifully. I do not ever have a "mushroom" head that other salons give me. Even as my haircut is growing out, it still looks great - the very definition of a great haircut. I drive all the way from Sammamish to Ballard and would never think to let anyone else cut my hair. When I moved to Seattle I was absolutely ecstatic about being closer to Grow Salon, although in my opinion the 3 hour drive was always 100% worth it. I had a very long line of bad hair-dye experiences at salons until I went to Grow. A lot of the time when I was unhappy with the way a hair color went (eg it looking COMPLETELY different from the picture I brought in) the previous stylists would just say things like "oh that's just the way your hair is" and left it at that. Come to find out, they just didn't care to put any effort in! Sierra has been a miracle worker and has brought my hair from dark red to platinum in less than a year, and kept a lot of the length healthy. She always goes above and beyond for my haircuts/colors! Everyone in the salon is genuinely nice which is so rare to find, and they always know the right product to get your hair the way you want. My hair would be in some sad shape if I had never went to Grow and been told about Kevin Murphy/Olaplex/etc! Wish I could give more than five stars because they definitely deserve it! read more
