First time here it was great to see a fresh farmers grocery store in this area. The produce seemed well stocked with many varieties of vegetables and fruits. The store was clean and well organized. There were cheese, meat and bread sections as well as refrigerated sections with my favorite Mediterranean organics dishes. The employees were nice and friendly and the service was great too!! Nice local family owned market. As such, closed on Sundays (day of rest!). Produce is nice. I have noticed that once their competition closed (Growers Ranch), the prices went up. Sometimes they are more reasonable than Ralph's etc, some times not (generally veggies are more reasonable, fruit is same price. ) I like the veggies, and the fact that I can get parsnips here, a potato substitute, and load up on fresh loose mushrooms! We had a really marvelous time at this store. It is primarily a produce store with a large variety of fruits and vegetables. In addition they also sell chips and some dried goods. The quality of the produce is very high. Service was not the best as the employees seemed to be very busy talking with each other. There is enough parking making this convenient. read more

What happened?... This place USED to be the place for everything produce related but unfortunately the fruit side of this market has gone downhill. Thought long and hard and gave this place 7 months of trials (buying fruit) before I decided to leave a review. The issue is fruit here is never consistent. You end up buying a melon (honey dew) for 2.99-3.99 a pound and you take it home, it ends up being worse than me hitting up a discount grocery store. Price isn't the issue. The produce here is fantastic! I love the quality and pricing of their local produce and vegetables. (Berries aren't local, so the pricing is similar to regular grocery stores, however) It's a cute little space with some vintage looking grocery carts and the cashier area being open to the outside. Cashiers are very nice and were very informative when I had a couple questions. Recommendation: I like to meal plan with the app meallime that focuses on whole food recipes. This is a great spot to get veggies and fruits. Also, you can pick up fresh baguettes from cest si bon bakery, bagels from shirley's, bagged nuts, jerky, drinks, and other food treats. Everything is very fresh, with quality at front and center. I found the pricing to be reasonable or a good deal. Compared to the local supermarket, I got a better deal on my small navel oranges, squash, turmeric, greens, and peaches. Especially, the white peaches, for a little over a buck a pound it was a great deal. Each peach was almost the size of a soft ball and in pristine condition... as if it got plucked off the tree. Side note, there are organic items but it looks like it depends on what's available and what's fresh. Also, they have a few brand name products in the dressings section and cold case. This isn't the spot to look for 5 or 10 brands of one thing, it is a fairly tight and curated selection on the shelves. read more

I was not going to leave a review but thought long and Hard and decided I need to do it. I Have been buying my produce here for my entire Adult Iife and never had a problem till now but the way it was handled was today wrong. I bought a close too 6.00 watermelon yesterday and it was small so expensive. But before I bought it I asked a girl that worked there if I could buy half a watermelon which they usually sell. She informed me that the Health department said no more. So I bought the smallest since I am one person. I went Home and something told me to cut it open right away. I did and it was brown around the inside edge and it was dry. I put it in a bag and went back to the market. When I entered the market the same girl I Had asked just an our ago if I could buy half one was there and I said that I need to return this because it is bad. She informed me that they do not take returns or refund that it says it on the receipt. After she argued with me and I raised my voice she threatened me that there was a camera and we are being filmed. I told her I did not care I am not doing anything wrong. Then she tells me that she will give me another watermelon. I told her the others were bad also and I took the better of all. One had a very soft side that should be removed. But she did not even care. She then said that she would let me get other produce in exchange. WHY DID IT TAKE FOR ME TO RAISE MY VOICE TO DO WHAT WAS RIGHT? DON'T YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR CUSTOMERS AND A LOYAL ONE AT THAT? So just be warned that this is what can happen to you. After at least 30 years shopping there I will not be back. How did I not know about Growers Ranch? Where has this place been hiding? Oh, it's been here for 50 years? Wow. For the past couple years, I have been on a fermented vegetable kick. I have been making my own sauerkraut, curtido, and veggies. It's fun, and the product is delicious and healthy. My hobby requires that I find fresh veggies. For my latest experiment, I wanted to try to make fermented jalepeno hot sauce. I needed about 2 pounds of fresh peppers plus garlic, white onions, and cilantro. I checked out Yelp for produce markets, and up pops Growers Ranch. I decided to check it out. It's a bit of trick to get here, and parking can be challenging. Once parked, I went into the store. It is open air like a farm stand. There is a wide variety of produce available. Fruits and veggies galore! I found some beautiful jalepeno peppers for my ferment. I also found a bunch of other really fresh produce at very reasonable prices. I would say the produce is comparable to a high-end grocery store at about half the price. You're obviously wondering about the hot sauce. It is incredible. I'm eating it on everything! I went back and got more peppers for another batch. Growers Ranch will be a regular stop for me as long as I am still eating! read more

I love to support small businesses...when deserving. This is a nice little produce market with some other gourmet items. The prices are good, some more expensive, some less expensive than other chain stores, but the quality is better on most produce items. I used to shop at another produce market that was close by, mainly because they had the freshest peeled garlic. I would go every two weeks and load up my cart with various items, along with the fresh peeled garlic. Just as the garlic would start to go bad in my fridge, two weeks later it was time for another trip. I really wanted Grower's Ranch to become my new Grower's Direct, so when I stopped by, I asked them if they sold peeled garlic while I was checking out my $50 cart of produce and other times. The checker referred me to the manager who told me that the garlic turns yellow too fast and no one wants to buy yellow garlic. Strangely, this wasn't the case with Grower's Direct. While I like the produce, it not so great that I'll be making a special trip across town to shop here. If you want my semi-regular business, then figure out how Grower's Direct was able to stock and sell fresh peeled garlic and I will be a loyal regular. Think of GR as a farmers' market open six days a week. Of course, they specialize in fruits and vegetables, but don't forget other items on your shopping list. Are you a coffee drinker? They sell Wilson Coffee, which is the best roaster in Orange County. Still eating carbs? They sell bread from Sunflour Bakery (Costa Mesa). Maw and Paw Kettle Korn is from Laguna Hills. They also sell a bunch of other stuff that I haven't gotten around to trying yet. They have been family-run since 1969. They support great local charities like Share Our Selves. I came for the coffee, but I keep coming back for the fresh and well-priced produce. Growers Ranch is the only location I know of that carries my new favorite coffee, Wilson Coffee. I've tried going directly to the roaster in Costa Mesa but finally gave up since I can never seem to catch them when they're open. Perhaps that's a good thing because I ended up discovering all that Growers Ranch has to offer. My ideal method of obtaining fruits and vegetables in order is 1) grow it myself in my garden plot; 2) buy it at a certified farmer's market; 3) pick it up at Growers Ranch. Let's face it, not everything can be easily grown in a little garden and sometimes the farmer's market doesn't have the ingredient I need -- say celery root -- so Growers Ranch is the next best choice. While they don't carry (or prominently advertise) much organic produce, the fruits and veggies they do have are ripe but not overly so (ahem, Whole Foods!), reasonably priced, and most importantly taste good! The selection is impressive and well-stocked, too. And dang, are the workers here nice, friendly, and helpful. Another added bonus which I really appreciate is that they carry specialty items from local food producers. In addition to my beloved Wilson Coffee, I've picked up yummy toffee from b. toffee, bread from Sun Flour bakery, and tortillas. I've also had my eye on some other locally produced baked goods that I'll undoubtedly try in the near future. The hours can be a challenge for some during the work week, but they're open on Saturdays as well. Check them out -- it's well worth the visit! read more

I guess I had higher expectations for this place which means I wasn't very impressed. Yes, they have veggies and produce, but I was actually able to get things much more cheaply at Grower's Direct the previous day. And it seemed like there wasn't as much selection on produce, either. The quality was good, much better than the local supermarkets, but not spectacular. The plus side is that they do have a wider assortment of various food and beverage products here. Another thing is that it is kind of a pain to get to the place, being on Newport Blvd where it is only a one way street. Wow! Just amazing, such a diamond in the rough! Being new to Costa Mesa, I have been testing out all of the grocery stores and this is by far the best find. If you set someone loose in there with the sole intention of finding bad produce, they'd fail miserably. Ever product you pick up, is near perfection. I got a full load of fresh fruits and veggies, as well as some great mexican products (tortillas and salsa), oh and I even splurged on a cookie since it looked so darn good. By the time I was going to the counter I was sure I had $25+ worth of groceries, and was shocked to find out all this was merely $16. Only draw back is it's no one stop shop. Although they have some dairy and limited lunch meats, I will be going to TJ's or Henry's for my meat and anything else I can't get here. Best thing is you get farmers market quality, but can pay with a credit card! I will be a loyal customer at Growers Ranch for as long as I'm in the area. read more

You wont be paying ridiculous grocery store prices either. In a typical grocery these days you will pay .99cents a lemon.. at growers ranch its .33 cents. They stock fruits and veggies that are in season (and not), and exceptionally fresh. The people working there have a love for fruits and veggies, and will recomend what is tasing best at the time. I found this place by total accident, but was terribly glad I did! Imagine Trader Joe's was a small Mom n Pop store, and you'd get Growers Ranch. Produce can be purchased by the individual whatever - you can buy single tomatoes, artichokes, onions, bell peppers, etc., unlike TJ's, and the produce all looked fresh and was reasonably priced. I got a basket of strawberries for $1.79, and they're $4 at roadside stands! There's a big selection of bagged nuts and snacks, again, reasonably priced, and sometimes, dare I say it, even cheaper than TJ's. Small selection of juices, sauces, etc. Fine on eggs and dairy. Don't recall if they carry alcohol, maybe a few wines? The majority of the store is produce. What I am ruminating on: They carry bags of licorice, 1 lb. for $2.19, in many colors and flavors. I bought red raspberry, and I could not stop eating it, it was amazing. I'm REALLY sad that I ate it all, and keep hoping more will magically appear. And they even have herbs and many are rare ones that you can't find in most stores you just have to ask the cashier in the front and she'll tell you if they have it.
