What's up with all these people chit chatting about Growers DIRECT? (yea, the one down off of 17th). You have to be a really hungry cheapskate to shop there. Sure, you might save a 2 or 3 bucks off your entire shopping list. But, yo, the produce goes bad a lot faster. This place is fantastic. I went last night, after a buddy at the gym told me about it. This is my FAVORITE place to shop for produce. I will never go to Grower's Direct up the street again. This place has better parking, nicer employees, and a better crowd. It's not nearly as crowded as Direct, and has a great selection of produce for a great price. The owner, manager and everyone affiliated with this place are kind and helpful. read more

This is the way grocery shopping used to be. A wonderful place with a great selection and excellent quality. They get fresh produce every morning and i know they supply produce to lots of restaurants around town as I've seen their delivery truck at a few of the good ones. Alas, I don't live in Plasticland anymore so no more Growers Ranch for me...now our produce comes in a box delivered straight from the farm every Tuesday, Yum. Absolutely the best market in Costa Mesa. Everyone that works here is upbeat, friendly and helpful and it makes shopping here significantly better than other, larger chains. The prices are outstanding on all of the produce and their premade and non-perishable items are all pretty solid as well. It's not a one-stop shop and their hours aren't the most friendly (10 - 6, closed on Sundays), but I always make it a point to load up when I come here. read more

It's nice that we have at least two produce stores within a fairly close distance to one another in Costa Mesa: Growers Ranch (this place) and Growers Direct. They are somewhat similar in their offerings in that both offer mostly non-organic fruits and vegetables. While I celebrate that we have these two places, I wish one of them would differentiate by offering exclusively organic, locally sourced fruits and vegetables from California farms. There is certainly room in the market for that type of establishment. For now, I will stick with Mother's Market for my produce, as they have a very good produce department and a buyer that has close relationships with the farms they source from. read more

Growers Ranch has the most beautiful selection of mushrooms in the area. I don't know why all of the other markets can't present mushrooms the way that they do, but I will go out of my way to buy Shiitakes, Oysters, etc. here. The shrooms are never like the dried out, shriveled, sadness that you find at other markets, nor are any of them put into packages. THIS is worth at trip to Growers Ranch. Another favorite find at this little produce stand is Fresno chilis. They are my favorite, and I usually grow my own, but after an unfortunate taste-testing of my entire crop by local racoons, I was glad to find that Growers has these chilis most of the time. The rest of the produce is just pretty good. Nothing outstanding. Forget organics. The prices are competitive, but don't expect the discount that you will find at Grower's Direct. You will also find a selection of things like bread, chips, oatmeal, and some dairy here. They're smart enough to have some pasta sauces and other things in case you need a one-stop meal. You'll pay for convenience, though. Do NOT try to enter this place before 10:00am. I walked in one morning at about five minutes 'til and was shushed out the door, even though there were checkers standing around. I was really angry at the the time, but I can't stay angry long enough to boycott the mushroom selection. Parking is pretty awful unless you get lucky. I think it is easier to cut through the lot behind Skosh Monahans off 20th rather than to enter from Newport Blvd. The ladies that work at this place are all very nice but they are slow. Don't shop here when you are in a hurry. read more

I just love this place. Kind hearts make up the staff here. I bring my kids and our carpool group for fresh fruit every Wednesday. I stay in my car to teach the kids independence and accountability. They pick their fruit out and my son gives the credit card and signs. The staff always helps them to free popcorn and treats them like adults. It's very sweet! I absolutely love this place! Not just for the quality of produce but the happy energy you get from the employees. The garlic heads are always the size of a small apple, the tomatoes smell right off the plant, and Avocado are always decent. I can always count on walking out with a bag of quality produce and for about $20-$25 is more than a few meals for me. Today I was offered a slice of Honey Crisp apple and Honey Dew melon from the happiest employee. He's always whistling and that lil gesture keeps me coming back. This family owned business has the BEST prices on fresh produce that lasts days longer than other local produce markets (cough cough...Growers Direct). Grower's Ranch not only has a retail store but they also commercially distribute produce to local restaurants like Mastro's and 21 Oceanfront. You can also buy huge bunches of herbs for $1.29 (basil, mint, rosemary, etc...). GR has a small wine and grocery section with dairy products and a good selection of Boar's Head deli meats and cheeses, large coffee selection, pastas, dressings, and dried fruits/nuts. They also sell fresh eggs that are inexpensive and recently started selling El Nopalito chips and salsa (the best in So Cal)!! Grower's Ranch is big on promoting other small businesses so many of the fresh breads, peanut butter, honey, and other condiments come from local artisans. Go check it out!! read more

Marco is a true gem - he is always ready to help find anything I need and offers samples of the best and newest items on hand. Check your receipt carefully before leaving the market! Growers Ranch has good produce but I've been overcharged several times since I've been shopping there. Today I picked up some asparagus priced at $1.99 lb., but when I got home and checked the receipt, I saw that I was charged $2.49 lb. This may not sound like a big deal but this kind of sloppy checkout adds up, and it's a real disservice to customers. I wouldn't have bought this if I knew in advance it was 25% more expensive. And it's a real hassle to have to return later to rectify it, which I don't have time to do. read more

I practically live here. The produce is super fresh, lovingly cared for, cheap, and the people are great to. If you need fresh herbs, this is the place to go. Seriously, you can get a HUGE bag of fresh cut basil for 1.00. At the grocery store, you can get 5 basil leaves for a few dollars... If you need some fresh herbs, ask the people who work there and they will get them for you. Where else can you get a big bag of groceries for about 10.00?! read more

I often end up biking here to pick up fresh produce, yet always end up with too many bags of goodies, wobbling home trying not to topple over. I refuse to buy produce at the grocery store now (which is about a half of a block away from my house). Everything is stocked fresh daily, and you can taste the difference. It's hard not too overload on food, as there is so much that looks fabulous. I even started eating brussel sprouts because of how green and inviting they looked, and now I love them! The set up of the store makes it easy to navigate and find what you're looking for (if you're looking for something specific). I always go straight to the dried fruit/nut aisle and grab a bag of fruit flavored licorice. Soft and delightful. You can fill your own bag of rice, beans or coffee...perfect when you only need a little bit. The staff is always helpful; they've even provided recipes for me when I was looking at items I've never used before.They have dry foods, bread, eggs, milk, and sauces in the back. I could seriously shop forever, leave with bags and bags full, all while only spending under 40 bucks. Usually I don't even have room in the fridge for everything I get. Whoops! read more

This store rocks! The prices are incredible. This is a really small store and rather old fashioned- but I like it that way. What they have is fresh, in season, and good quality. (There is another nearby "grower's" store- but not as fresh). I like buying inexpensive fruit and having it last more than a day or two. Also, you can buy a big bag of groceries for less than $10. They have Alta Dena milk for less than 2/3rds the price of what the grocery store sells it as. They also have great brown and free-range eggs at a good price. I was able to buy limes before the holidays for 10c each and filled a big bowl full of them for an inexpensive table arrangement (then used them for pie :-) NOTE: they keep their fresh herbs- mint, basil, etc, maybe even arugula in the back not on the floor- you just have to ask someone to get it for you. I didn't even know they carried those things until someone next to me asked for help with fresh basil and clued me into the trick of knowing to ask. The only thing I don't like is that they're closed on Sundays. Otherwise, I try to get there once a week. read more

My daughter grew up going to this little gem and now my grand kids come with me. They LOVE the popcorn and also the delicious frozen fruit bars on a hot summer day. They call it "The Old Fashioned Store" (so cute!) and it truly is... I have nothing but gratitude and praise for Grower's Ranch and so agree with other reviewers..."Growers Direct" have been poser's since day 1 that they opened. They'll never come even close to what Growers Ranch was/is and will be... Don't settle for "grocery" store produce dept's or pay the over-the-top prices "Mother's" now demands (seriously, right?) When I lived in the area I went to Growers Ranch every week. Their produce rotates according to what's in season, and they have a great selection of nuts.
