I went today to return some stuff at the Maido stationery store. After returning the things I don't need, I noticed that this place was selling powdered matcha mixed with strawberries or Yuzu. This is me and my mom's number one place to buy food and utensils when it comes to making Japanese styled food. The grocery is good for what to expect for any Asian market but the main attraction is the food court. It may not seem like much but all of them are really good and would fill up your hunger instantly. My favorites from the top of my head are the Katsu Don if I remember correctly and the Udon section where you pick your tempura (don't know the exact name). Overall good place to eat lunch or even dinner. Another problem would be finding a seat since there's hardly any tables and your plate is pretty big and bowls are heavy so you have to be somewhat quick to find a seat. The ambiance is fine but that's kind of to be expect in any supermarket, which is usually crowds talking and all. I really don't have much to say. Ever since this place closed down the anime shop, the DVD store, and bookstore, this place pretty much lost what made Mitsuwa special and worth visiting. Especially for someone who's into both anime and tokusatsu like Super Sentai (Japanese Power Rangers). Those places are what got me my first Gundam model kit (Freedom Gundam from Gundam Seed) and my go to place for Japanese DVDs as mentioned (Gokaiger, Kyoryuger, and Nanoha). I understand why they close down these stores, especially with streaming services and online shopping are a thing, even though I don't fully agree as they are customers like me that would prefer in-store physical copies. That is why I deduct one star. These are replaces with a gachapon store, a Matcha store, a Boba store I believe and Daiso. The matcha and boba place (forgot the names sorry) are surprisingly good. I really like the matcha ice cream in a bowl and I believe the Doncha. The gachapon I cannot say as I never spend money there and I'm not into these gacha machines and I rarely buy anything in Daiso as its just your typical convenience store that sells some Japanese stuff so I won't say much. In conclusion, it's a very nice spot to eat Japanese meals and especially something to fill you up for the day while also shopping to buy Japanese food to cook at home. Just be aware this is pretty pricey, especially the Royce matcha chocolates and the food court. read more

Came here on a Sunday evening and decided to order the chicken cutlet curry. This is my go to spot for quick Japanese food. As usual, it was much busier than the other Mitsuwa location in Cypress. The chicken cutlet was juicy and cooked well, while the curry was rich and flavorful. Despite the crowd, the food came out quickly. read more

One of my fave spots in Orange County. If you go here for groceries, they have amazing selection. And if you get hungry, you're in luck because they have amazing food selection. The food court is pretty huge and spacious albeit it gets really packed. However, they have a great system and staff are always proactive in cleaning up the tables as soon as someone's done eating so others can use the table. It had fun little stores inside and a nice big food court. We already had lunch prior but grabbed some delicious but pricey boba teas while we were shopping. You'll find plenty of food options ranging from sushi, udon, ramen, ice cream, boba, etc. Here's what I typically get: Tonkatsu Udon from Sanukiseimen Mugimaru (4/5) - Salty, flavorful, and just what you need to pair with a frozen slushie beer. The udon has slices of tender chashu pork for your protein fix. Don't forget to add the delicious tempura options. Prices are fairly reasonable (~$11 for a regular udon bowl). Matcha & Hokkaido milk soft serve from Umacha (4/5) - Great soft serve texture! The matcha is mild and the Hokkaido milk is on the creamier side. I'll probably just stick w/ the matcha next time. After your food coma, check out the actual market! You'll find plenty of Japanese goods. The market sometimes have random pop-ups on the weekends. Mitsuwa Marketplace is an experience. It's the closest I've come to being in Japan without actually being in Japan. It's also the closest I've come to being in San Francisco's Japantown without actually being in San Francisco's Japantown. It is, as the name states, a "marketplace", in that it consists of a market, many shops, and a Japanese food court all under one roof. Stepping foot inside was exciting. The entryway is busy, with the first vendor selling high-end mochi across from another selling beautiful Japanese candies and desserts. Down the middle they're giving away samples of Japanese seafood spaghetti, fermented soybeans, and I don't know what else. Walking through the "market" portion of the store I had fantasies of loading my trunk for the drive back up north. So many interesting sweets, meats, seafood, liquor, and more, more, more. I can't say whether the prices were fair, only that if I were, say, about to make Sukiyaki or Sashimi I'd come here for the ingredients. I wandered from the store to the food court where each purveyor looked more interesting than the last. Dinner plans were already set but a return visit the following evening (beware: food court restaurants close early) allowed me to enjoy the full Mitsuwa Marketplace experience which I'd describe as clean, tasty, and a venerable hive of activity. I'd been wanting to experience Mitsuwa Marketplace for a long time. Now that I have, I'm fairly certain I'll be heading here at least once on every future SoCal visit. read more

"Feel the vibe from here to Asia" (The Manhattan Transfer) Mitsuwa Marketplace opened its first amazing Asian market in Fresno in 1979. Today, the brand has grown to twelve locations stretching from California to Texas to Illinois to New Jersey to Hawaii. The store was an absolute blast to wander around in and gawk at so many wonders everywhere we looked. Gorgeous fruits and vegetables, mountains of rice, more sauces and spices than I ever dreamed existed, They sell a mind-numbing amount of Asian foods, drinks, snacks, prepared foods, produce, baked goods, meat and seafood counters, and more. The marketplace has some self-contained businesses (like Daiso), and a big food court with sushi, sashimi, bento, noodles, soups, and pretty much whatever you'll find in a Japanese restaurant. Want to wash all that goodness down with an adult beverage? Well, Mitsuwa has Japanese beer, sake, Japanese whiskey, and Japanese wine. We were flying home soon after our visit, so I was reluctant to buy anything in a glass jar or bottle. But we did pick up some boxed soups and sauces and a huge Korean pear to enjoy in our hotel room. Ah, Mitsuwa. It's been a while but nice to revisit again. I came here recently with my husband to visit the food court. I parked in the underground garage since parking out front was busy. We entered the grocery store and found our way to the food court. We dined at Santouka and grabbed matcha tea from UMACHA. The store is well lit and organized. They have those ingredients you need if you want a jar of pickled ginger, dried seaweed, fresh cut seafood, or fermented goods, etc. If you are in the area for Japanese groceries or snacks, this place fits the bill. read more

The price was reasonable for premade sushi but the sushi was not good. It smelled very strongly of fish and the rice felt like it was a few days old. This Mitsuwa feels a bit larger, and nicer than the new Irvine one. This one seems a lot more organized, and like it has more stuff? I came here to grab some stuff for a shabu shabu night with friends, and was looking specifically for goma sauce, which they had the exact one I needed. I also happen to find this instant mushroom pasta that I discovered and loved in Japan! It's been impossible to find them in the states, so I'm glad this location carries them. The parking area here is really limited, especially when there's also plenty of restaurants/food courts in the store. There's also a Daiso attached to this market, so you can grab home essentials and groceries at the same time! Very similar and reminiscent of the grocery and department stores in Japan. read more

Mitsuwa Marketplace is another well-known Japanese general store in SoCal, especially the Torrance location. The Mitsuwa @ Costa Mesa location, likely due to its smaller size and how tightly packed everything is, could cause some sensory overload. The location is shared with a few other businesses, so the parking can get hectic, and to me I get anxiety knowing doors being dinged is inevitable due to the cramped, marked spaces. I don't believe there is any "optimal" time to come but certainly avoid the lunch hours. As there are customers that work nearby swing over to buy prepacked lunch boxes, so the food court is congested. There are a few independent stores - a noodle bar and mochi dessert, setting up counter along the outskirt of the perimeter just makes the market very noisy. The service and prices are okay, but the uniqueness of the inventory does draw me back. read more

I went in for the marketplace and stayed for the grocery store . I noticed it was very busy during lunch hour. My FAVORITE items were the shrimp and TEMPURA battered items from the shop that allows you to grab your own tempura sticks. But I also bought the curry/chicken katsu from another shop (it was ok) and the spicy mayo seaweed rice wrap from a third place and that one I really enjoyed ass well. If I would go back, I would only buy the tempura items. read more

This Japanese marketplace includes a food court with many offerings including a large market, a bakery and a mochi stand. I find it fascinating just to walk around, but the aromas and sights have always resulted in me ordering hot food and leaving the store with a bag or two of groceries. Seating in the food court can be challenging at times as can be finding a parking place. But going inside is worth the effort. The food is fresh and the variety (e.g. vegetables, sushi...) is substantial. I recently learned that prepared foods go on sale late in the day and I'm going to take advantage of that on my next visit. Omg this is for omusubi gonbei pop up at the front. Think it's gone for now though, but for the price of the onigiris it was surprisingly soo delicious. Like the rice was seasoned perfectly. I got the bomb and it had some seaweed bits, cooked tuna, and cooked salmon with mayo and some special sauce ($5) . I expected raw spicy tuna because of the description, but it ended up being my favorite. The ikura is a nice basic flavor and kind of mild. The shiso leaf has a nice flavor from the shiso leaf itself but overall is a plain rice ball- their rice is just really nice texture and yummy. 2 rice balls were able to fill me The other time I tried the mentaiko and that was the only one I didn't like as I found the mentaiko quite fishy/bitter. I think their brown rice ones would've been yummy too if they had vegetables I liked. Also when it's not busy checkout is easy because they slapped mitsuwa barcode stickers, when it was busy ( weekend) they had a service down the line/checkout deal. Overall mitsuwa has always been a great place to hang and get food, but parking can be hard to find on the weekend. They really need to figure out the parking situation cuz idk where else to park??? They have these chu his that are like under $5 with 4.9% alch which are lighter in flavor but still yummy. This place seems larger than the Bay Area's Saratoga location. I heard the Torrance location is bigger, but I've never been. Love coming here for Japanese beauty products (face sheet masks, my fav make-up wipe remover, eyelash glue, etc). They also carry a small amount of Korean beauty products. There's a Shiseido store near the food court. The food court has different budget price points and a good variety. There's a bakery, a stationery store, and a Daiso store. I would go here more often if I were closer! There are no loyalty points like H-mart or Shibuya-LA. (48/100) read more
