This was one of the worst dining experiences I've had in a long time. I ordered the 8 oz. buffalo sirloin dinner, but even before the food arrived, the service was disappointing. The staff couldn't clearly answer basic questions about the menu, and when I asked about the seasonal vegetable, I was told it was "something frozen." That turned out to be true--the broccoli was cold and tasted like it had come straight from a freezer. The steak was tough and flavorless, the baked potato was barely warm, and the salad looked like a cheap bagged mix. The open-face prime rib dip at our table was just as bad, with overcooked, dry meat served on couple pieces of Texas toast. The restaurant itself appeared neglected. The bathrooms were dirty, the restroom doors were grossly sticky and there was a makeshift cardboard repair w/ duct-taped to an air conditioning unit above one of the dining tables. The food is good, I would give 4 stars for the food. The service is decent, about 4 starts for service. What knocks my review down to 3 stars is the false advertising. The restaurant hours show closing at 10:00pm. I go in to get a pasta at 9:30pm and their kitchen is already closed. I get that cooks want to go home. But operating hours are operating hours. If you are open until 10:00pm, provide your full service until 10:00pm. If it was 9:50, I could understand shutting the kitchen down, Ive been a cook in a restaurant. But just because you want to get out of there early it shouldnt mean you stop providing service a half an hour before closing. I live right by this place and come here every other week. But one of the most annoying things is when a restaurant stops service long before their hours say they close. Wont be coming here nearly as often since they cant honor their hours. read more

Well I came to grub steak for my birthday dinner. I often get steak for my birthday dinner, and this was our first time to this place, as we are new to the area. My neighbor had said that their steaks weren't the best, but I went there with high hopes. I liked the atmosphere, and the server was good. There were a lot of choices on the menu, which was good, including kids choices, which was good because I have 3 kids. I chose the rib eye dinner, cooked medium, with mashed potatoes. The steak came medium, and it looked good, but for some reason the flavor was just bland. No idea why, maybe they needed to marinate it? It wasn't bad, but it just wasn't that great. The mashed potatoes were good but very small, but the asparagus was inedible. Hard and impossible to chew. Unfortunately there was no vegan or dairy free choices for my wife, who can't eat meat or dairy for medical reasons. Maybe I'm being generous with 3 stars, I'm not sure. The Grub-Stake is close to our house and is our go to local super close hangout. Good selection of beer and alcohol in general; cold beer and good prices. What we really like is that there is a family side that welcomes kids and a 21+ side without. We always sit on the 21+ side at the bar which is spacious. Good menu for food however a little limited some days because lack of help. Overall, cool spot for a cold beer and to hang out after work. read more

Our annual St. Patty's Corned Beef & Cabbage visit to the Grub Steak. The Corned Beef was surprisingly tough and a departure from past years' well prepared offerings. The Broasted Chicken dinner was good; moist and flavorful. Not as good as the Suds Hut, but good. I believe the difference is the flavorful breading used at the Hut. My Corned Beef and Cabbage loving spouse thinks we will try a different place next year. She suggests Dublin. read more

I called ahead to see if we needed reservations. They said no just come on in. There was a choice to be seated with adults only or family seating. We chose family because all of the adult seating was high tops with no backs on the chairs. We were seat right away. Our drink orders were taken delivery quickly. I kept adding salt and pepper and that helped a little bit ended up dipping it in my nieces au jus. The jojos that came with weren't crispy at all, even if they were, they came out swimming in steak juice and were completely soggy. They give you a generic bread roll that was pretty flavorless and only have jam or jelly no butter. My parents both had the prime rib and both were disappointed. He backed potatoes was cold other then where it obviously sat on the warmer. I ordered a sandwich and it was ok but I ordered sweet potatoes fries but got chips. Found out that was the only option now but they didn't specify. They even screwed up the beer I ordered and got annoyed and said they poured the one I asked for until they we're asked to poured the correct one. The bar tender then acknowledged they were wrong. The only good thing was the waitress was very nice and apologetic. She shouldn't have had to be. We will not be going back for a long time which sucks because they are so close to us. Visiting Helena this week and stopped at the Grub Stake for dinner. Ordered the baked artichoke dip which was really good. Then the steak came. I ordered he New York strip and no exaggeration the best steak I have had in a long long time. Tender and juicy, seasoned perfectly, melt in your mouth steak. May be going there every night until we leave. Server was very polite and attentive and made our visit enjoyable. Definitely recommend this place for dinner. This place was crazy busy when we stopped in here on vacation coming from Yellowstone up to Glaciar park. The service was not very good - we had to wait an hour to get all of our food- some of it came earlier than other items. The pizza was faster than the Philly cheesesteak sandwich and salad for some reason. There also was a lot of weird behavior by other customers in the 'family' dining area- you think they would've gone over to the 'bar' area but it must have been too busy over there so they came to the dining side. Only giving one star because I can't give zero. We had dinner at this establishment tonight for my husbands birthday. It will be our LAST visit to this restraunt. The service was fine but the food was quite possibly the worst meal I've ever tried to choke down. I do not like to be a complainer, but it was not even edible. I ordered ribs which when I looked up this restraunt online were described as so tender they fall off the bone. These were so hard and dry I couldn't even cut them with a knife let alone bite into them. I wouldn't even fed them to my dog. Even my son's obviously from a box mac n cheese wasn't edible, they were watery like soup, it was so gross....I felt so bad my husband had a terrible birthday that were going to try again next week some where else. 2 stars because the beer selection is good and the service was quick. As for the food, if you're going to read this out loud, make sure the kids are in a different room. Having lived in Philadelphia for many years, any time I see a "Philly" cheesesteak on a menu I have to order it. Steve Harvey must have been put in charge of naming Grub-Stake's menu items just before hosting the Miss Universe Pageant, because if this is a Philly cheesesteak then I'm Burt Reynolds. The only thing "Philly" about it is the half-assed, unionesque labor that was put into assembling this dumpster creation. The "hoagie" roll (kudos for the official Northeast terminology used in their menu description) is actually a slightly toasted hotdog bun. The default cheese is Swiss; the correct choices of provolone and Cheez Whiz are not available options, but if you want your "Philly" cheesesteak with pepper jack, they got you, bruh. They do offer American cheese (some places in the Philadelphia area will do this), but if you think that tastes good, you're probably from Delco and have an Arctic Splash tattoo. Oh, and this also came with a side of aus jus, because Philadelphians don't already have enough shit spilled on their Birds jerseys. Full disclosure, I've totally put Steak-Umms on a hotdog bun with whatever cheese happened to be in my fridge, but I was also in college, had consumed a nearly lethal number of Hurricane malt liquor 40s, and pretty sure I left the gas stove on afterwards. Even in that stellar state of mind, I still had the good sense to not call it a Philly cheesesteak. If you want to call it a "steak and cheese" sandwich, go for it, but unless you're going to at least make an attempt at replicating the real thing, leave the "Philly" out of it. I usually get the chicken fried steak, burgers or ribs. The ribs are delicious and tender. The chicken fried steak is crispy with lots of tasty gravy. We ordered a BBQ Burger & fries which was very good, a Chicken Citrus Spinach salad which was not great, the chicken didn't have any real flavor and salad wasn't satisfying. Someone ordered the Ribeye steak and said it was very bland, beans as a side was under cooked and hard. Another person ordered the Fried Fish & chips and said it was good but had green beans as a side and they were under cooked and still crunchy. Unfortunately we were not impressed overall. Hopefully this was an off day, but for us it wasn't great. I think maybe they might need to make some changes in the kitchen. I've eaten here many times and really never hated a meal until now. Also the service was not as it good as it usually is. My husband asked what micro beers they had on tap and the waitress said Idk and just stared at him. I would've been fine with that because it's just beer, it can be figured out. I wanted a kid's grilled cheese and a cup of soup but saw you could get a ham & cheese with soup for $8, so I ordered it without ham. We also ordered battered shrooms as an app. Waited quite a while and noticed the waitress visiting with someone for most of that time. Then all of the food came out at the same time. My grilled cheese had cheese that had been cooked but then sat and resolidified and honestly it looked like it was never really melted all the way in the 1st place. I could see that before I took a bite but I tried it anyways to make sure. Totally cold. The mushrooms were unlike anything I have eaten before. Rubbery batter on the outside, a serious amount of nasty liquid and tasted like a glob of snot had coagulated or something. I can't think of any other way to describe it. My new sandwich came and the cheese was pretty much melted but tasted like vegetable oil, not butter. Soup was good. Burger was ok. Jojos, some were overcooked. Bill came and we were happy to see a few beers taken off until we saw the price of the grilled cheese. It was $8 for the sandwich plus $2 for the soup. It was a bit of a shock to pay that much for 2 pieces of bread and a slice of American cheese. I also can't imagine their alfredo is worth $20. I wouldn't waste the money on taking a chance. Reevaluate the quality of your food versus your high prices. Don't let bad food get to a table. Pretty simple. read more
