I wish I could do two reviews - one for the steak and one for everything else. So, the ribeye was fantastic. Juicy, flavorful and cooked perfectly. A high end steak house worthy piece of meat. Also this is a friendly place and the service is great. But, no joke, the nearby Exxon station has a better wine selection. Seriously bad wine. Side vegetables were a frozen mix, salad was ice burg, condiments are low end Sysco. Kind of a shame because it would be easy to kick it up a notch. So good place to stop for a steak and a beer. I read several really bad reviews about this restaurant but tried it anyway and it was really good!! We both had the broasted chicken dinners. The chicken was great!! It also came with a salad that was good, great blue cheese dressing!! The green beans were great and the loaded baked potato was great!! The dinners were so big we brought three pieces of chicken home. The tap beer was local and cold!! Our waiter was great too! I've got nothing but good things to say about this place. Had nachos last night - guy in the pizza kitchen is no nacho artist. Bean-meat mixture was glopped on to edge of plate and chips thrown over. Tomatoes thrown on as an afterthought post cooking. Taste of dish was disappointing as well. I used to think they had the best nachos in town but preparation is now extremely inconsistent. If the cook couldn't put together a decent nacho platter, I can't imagine how the pizzas were last night. For nachos that both taste and look good, try the Overland. read more

Have heard some good things about Grub-Stake lately so decided to give it a try. The new addition to the site which includes a bar, dance floor, band area, TV's and seating has a nice feel and flow to it. We were told they have live music every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night. The main dining area needs some work. It was very hot and dingy when we had dinner and was so loud I had to yell at my husband to have a conversation. I ordered the fettuccine alfredo and was NOT impressed. My husband ordered the prime rib with baked potato and said it was very good. We both had drinks from the bar and those were well priced, about $4 for a beer and $3.50 for a mixed drink. The staff was fantastic, our waiter was very friendly and prompt, and the other staff at the bar, the host, and others were all cheerful and quick. The parking lot needs some work, it's a dirt lot which is fine but really had some deep potholes. Felt like I was 4-wheeling just to get in and out of the place. I left with mixed feelings about this place. They are always packed these days and I'm happy to see they are doing well. But also left feeling disappointed in my meal and trying not trip in a pothole on my way to the car. Keep working on it Grub-Stake, I'll be back to give you another try. read more

Wife and I used to frequent here often for breakfast. Their food was plenty, incredibly tasty, timely, priced well and coffee spot on. The last few times we've been out, the food quality has dropped, you get less food, prices jumped, and the coffee tasted like it was mixed half with water. Very disappointing. Best kept secret in Helena! In the land of giant steak, Grub-Stake is as good as it gets. Get Grade-A steak, giant portions, and friendly service without having to put on a shirt and tie. We stopped here for dinner while staying in Helena. Reviews were pretty mixed but we stopped anyway. The sirloin was cooked perfectly and my boyfriend's three alarm burger was also pretty great. Clean place, cute decor and nice friendly atmosphere. We will definitely return! read more

Worse experience I've ever had in a restaurant. We were seated quickly but it went downhill from there. It took over a half an hour to get our waters after asking three times. After another 15-20 minutes, we were finally given our menus and were able to put in our drink orders. It took another half an hour to get our drinks and one of our party never received hers until we asked 4 times for it. Mind you we arrived at the restaurant at 7:00pm. We did not place our order until shortly after 8:00pm. We had to ask the bus boy 4-5 about our order because the 3 waitstaff acted like we weren't even there. We didn't receive our food until after 9:00pm, 2 hours after our arrival at Grub Stake. When we received the food most of our dishes were cold. After multiple complaints, we only received a small discount on the meal. I will never return to this restaurant and will never recommend it to anyone. We were referred by a friend that had told us they had the best chicken fried steak they had ever eaten. We decided to try it since one just can't miss the best chicken fried steak ever. The Grub Stake is a little out of town by about 5 miles. We stopped in for lunch and seated ourselves. We both ordered the chicken fried steak with salad and one side. I had the sweet potato gator tots and my wife had the French fries. We also had an appetizers of onion rings. The wait was not long when we had our salads and onion rings. The salad was a regular side salad. The onion rings were large thick rings and very good. The main course was then brought out. The chicken fried steak was not the biggest one i had ever had but it was the most tenderest and up there with the tastiest one I have had. I think that the sausage gravy is what sent it over the top. We will be back. read more

Food is OK but very over priced. Most everything taste like it is cooked in a warehouse and warmed in the microwave. Not restaurant quality, a TV dinner is better. The food in any other Helena restaurant will be better. The management is indifferent to the complaints offered by his customers, typically his response is "well you ate it". We went to Grub Stake because I really wanted a steak. Asked for Med Rare. Came out Med Well. I don't like complain but I thought....yes, I am hungry for a good steak. So I sent it back. The general manager came out and basically called me a liar. He said the steak he saw was actually rare. WHAT???? He was definitely not talking about my steak. Sorry, Derek (GM) I do know the difference between a rare and med-well steak. (Wish I would have taken a picture). Unfortunately, now I am hearing from other people that the general directive is that any complaint is deemed as the Customer Is Wrong!! Too bad! We've had lunch here in the past and its been pretty good. But our dinner experience left a lot to be desired. The waiter said it was just his second day on the job and it showed. I ordered a beer before dinner and after waiting an inordinate amount of time, was told they were out of that brand. I ordered the ribeye medium well but was cooked beyond that. Another beer order, another delay. And it wasn't until I got home that I discovered they charged me for the first beer they didn't have in stock. I went here last evening, for a friends birthday for the first time. I ordered the broasted chicken and found it moist, perfectly cooked and delicious. It was very bz, and very Montana, come one in, pull up a chair and chat....I would go again, and hope to try the pizza. My only beef, which is minor, is that they need to work on communication with the hostess and floor staff and presentation. But after all, its a great watering hole, and cannot wait to go back. They appeared to be short staffed in the kitchen. We waited over an hour for burgers. My wife ordered a well done burger and hers was raw to the point of cold to the touch. I ordered a medium and received a well done burger. My bacon was burned crisp. I asked to see the manager and after reviewing our situation didn't charge us for our meal. We were a large table and they were already busy. Our waitress started or fun and joking with us. She really did try, but the kitchen really hosed her. The steaks were very over cooked, one was for a kid and came out way later than the rest of our food. It, too, was very overcooked. The soup was rather gravy- like, but had decent flavor. The shrimp on one of the dinners was ice cold and rubbery. They ran out of baked potatoes, so the kitchen took the liberty to swap out for mashed potatoes without first asking the diner. The waitress forgot to refill drinks, but it was busy and she did apologize. Gratuity was added to the checks and totaled more than $20 on one of them, and when my sister balked and asked to talk to a manager, the manager came out with an attitude and was very verbally combative. He reduced the bill slightly, but informed her that next time he would not be reducing the bill for her. She took this opportunity to let him know that he didn't need to worry about next time since there wouldn't be one. I give it a two, simply because the waitress really did try and she seemed like a nice enough kid. read more

I live within a few minutes of Grub Stake and have experienced its food, service, and atmosphere countless times. With that said, I have resolved in the last year to drive further south into Helena for a real restaurant experience. Grub Stake is a great place to go if you are okay with a gritty, rustic bar feel and mediocre food. I have to say that their service staff are pretty good for the Helena area. But the lack of quality in the food and atmosphere lead my wife and I elsewhere. I was also disappointed in the half-hearted addition to the restaurant which leaves the customer wondering, "what are they going to do with this space?" I was with a group of 5 and we had great service at the bar. I believe the bartenders name was Kellen? And he did a phenomenal job at keeping us happy. The food was good, pretty average. Nothing but bland and tasteless. The JoJos were undercooked. I can't bring myself to try a steak here if a simple burger is not up too par. Stop there on the way through town got a sirloin steak. It was the worst steak that I can remember eating. I ordered it medium rare. The steak was a half an inch thick mostly fat and Gristle and well done. I told the waitress about it she came back and said she told a manager but that was the end of that story.
