Great Cuban-inspired food for breakfast / brunch. I came with my wife on a weekday for brunch. I ordered the El Nacional, which was huevos con chorizo, avocado, sweet plantain, refried beans, pickled onions, and crostini. The eggs with chorizo was tasty - not overcooked and not overwhelmed with chorizo. What I ended up doing was using the crostini as a vehicle to eat the other things - I'd pile up some eggs, beans, avocado, pickled onions, etc. on the crostini and eat everything that way. But by themselves, each of the items on the dish were also tasty. I also ordered it with the homemade limeade, which was just ok. My wife tried the Breakfast Bowl, which was 2 fried eggs over rice and beans, and she ordered it with the fried cheese. The fried cheese was probably my favorite thing of everything we ordered - it was super dense but only lightly fried - very tasty! The service was ok - I think they may have been understaffed that day because one server was taking care of basically half of the restaurant. So it took a while for us to get our orders in, but once they were in, the food came out pretty quickly. I do wish the portion size was a little bigger for the price - while the food was tasty, the portion size didn't fill me up, if I'm being honest. Parking was a bit of a problem, as the lot is pretty small and full, and street parking is difficult to find since it's located by UVA's campus. Upfront, all of my reviews are based on my expectations, walking into the establishment. In this case, a Miami Cuban eatery in the middle of Virginia. Understand also, that I have done quite a bit in Miami and in the Caribbean. Walking in the atmosphere was very welcoming and fun. A variety of seating options and even though the establishment appeared to be a conversion of a former auto service garage, it was kind of cozy even on a cold winter day. The menu is exactly what you would expect with all sorts of Miami/Cuban dishes. The waiter was knowledgeable and very helpful in ordering. There was just the two of us so we didn't get to order a lot of of the menu items. But what we received was Tasty, but not overly impressive. But the next time I'm in the neighborhood, I would not hesitate to return to try more of the menu. read more

This place really wasn't worth the hype. When we checked in the host pointed to the waiting area and said we could get drinks there. What he didn't explain however, is that the drinks are ordered at the host stand. Myself, as well as another person with a different group, stood at the bar trying to order for ~10 mins before a different employee told us we needed to order from the host. While we waited for our table, we watched 2 more parties do this same thing. The wait time for our table (55 minutes) far exceeded what was initially quoted (30 minutes). The food was good (arguably one of the better Cubans I've had outside of FL), but definitely not worth an hourlong wait. read more

Made this a priority when they won the best sandwich award for the state of Virginia. My sister and I ordered Queso Frites as an appetizer and 2 El Cubano sandwiches. The bread of the sandwich was perfectly made and pressed. It was a good sandwich, but the inside did not seem to get ample time to marry as the cheese did not melt. Points for offering both a Bloody Mary and (my preferred brunch drink) a Dirty Maria. Our after dinner Cuban coffee con leche was perfectly strong and sweet. Warm, inviting and friendly staff. Unhurried setting with indoor and outdoor seating. Moderate price range. Was a regular at the original location (my favorite restaurant). Went to the new location when they first opened for the late night menu and it disappointed, from the drinks to the food. Came back to try again for the late night menu months later and it is back to its glory. Seems like the menu got revamped and added a lot of traditional Central American dishes. The Lechon Mom's Platter is top notch. The Sudado de Pollo was great as well. I appreciate the subtle attention to detail in the differences in rice/beans between countries' dishes. Everything about this place is amazing...except the Charlottesville parking. This is our first time here for brunch, since they moved locations and it is so much more bright and inviting here. We popped into Guajiros around 2pm on a Saturday and got seated right away! The service was incredibly friendly and fast. The El Cubano was delicious and my friend's sandwich was also very good. I am not a soda drinker typically, but SO glad I tried the Jupiña. I am going to try and find a case of it now! Ambiance is very Frieda-focused and they have cool trinket walls. My sister and I arrived on a Tuesday around 12:30. We actually made a special trip here because my son who is a foodie living in Indianapolis read about it. It wasn't too busy when we arrived, but it started filling up soon after. The interior is bigger than it appears from the outside. There are individual tables and seats at the bar. Minimal outside seating is also available but it would be pretty noisy. Inside is an airy dining space with various pictures and other decorations. We were greeted immediately by a very cheerful man and taken to a table. He gave us menus, and the waitress arrived promptly. She was also very amiable. On the menu, they have small plates, breakfast, lunch plates, sandwiches and a couple of items for kids. I ordered the El Cubano with french fries and asked for Ham Croquetas to go. My sister ordered the Lechon Mom's Platter that included rice and beans and seasoned pulled pork. Overall, it was just ok. Maybe a personal preference, but there was too much bread on the sandwich and not enough pickles. The meat and cheese were good though. My sister said the pork was tender but a bit on the dry side. The Ham Croquetas are a mystery. They are fried and nice and crunchy but the ham and ham flavor are missing. I'm not exactly sure what is stuffed in there. The waitress failed to mention there is a $2.00 up-charge for fries instead of plantain chips. She also left our dirty plates on the table. They were still there when we left. FOOD I've been to Guajiro's a couple of times now, and each time I've gone, I already miss it the moment I leave. I've ordered two of their lunch sandwiches-- the pan con pollo and el cubano, both of which are savory, mouthwatering, and all-in-all delicious. They also come with a side of plantain chips or fries for an extra dollar. DRINKS The coffee here always hits the spot. I've had the cafe con leche and cortadito. They're not too sweet or bitter, and the caffeine definitely packs a punch. They have other options of coffee including colada and cafecito and other beverages including fresh juices (limeades, Hibiscus tea, etc.) and international sodas (Materva, Mexican coke, unsweetened tea, etc.). AMBIANCE The interior is decorated absolutely wonderfully. The place is always lively, and the views onto the train tracks and the surrounding Charlottesville area at large is beautiful. SERVICE The staff are kind and friendly. They are quite conversational with their regulars as well. The wait time to eat in on a weekend is about an hour, but you can order take out online or in person should you wish. PARKING Street parking is available at a limited capacity. read more

Stopped by on a visit to UVA and I'm obsessed! Service was top notch from start to finish, and there were so many good options to choose from. We ended up getting the huevos guajiros and breakfast bowl with sweet plantains. The breakfast bowl was absolutely delicious and I recommend trying it! The plantains were a unique twist and now I'm hooked. Besides the food, the restaurant itself is very nicely decorated and clean, from the dining areas to the interior and bathroom. What is it about C'ville that it can so perfectly replicate another city's vibe in it's restaurants? Southern Crescent totally nails NOLA, and Guajiro's will feel like a stroll through the Ocho. Dear Daughter #2 discovered the place previously, and thought it only had outdoor seating. We were ushered upstairs to a very cool, totally vibing dining space that has a ton of artwork and decorative bric-a-brac to entertain you while you wait for your food. Our surfer dude server was chillaxed to the max, and totally in sync with the zeitgeist of the place. Cuban coffee? Yes, please. Between us we had breakfast tacos, huevos Guajiro, and the hands-on breakfast. I've never really dug plantains, but it came out two ways with my wrap - sliced and crispy fried as a side, and sautéed with my stuffing. I'm now a fan!
