I wanted to try a new Mexican place as opposed to some of the usual places I've tried and stuck with very often. This place delivered in flavor and would definitely try again. I started with the guacamole, which I got spicy, and the shrimp soup. The guacamole had good balance and texture, but I didn't get a lot of spice from the flavor that I requested. The shrimp soup had a nice, spicy broth with well cooked shrimp. However, I would have liked the shrimp to be more abundant and chopped up. Also would've liked to see some more substance in the soup such as avocado or maybe some corn. The entrees is where it really stood out. The steak burrito was flavorful and the steak was tender and the ratio of steak, cheese, beans, and other fixings were perfectly executed. The enchiladas were delicious as well with the mole sauce having an exceptional flavor and spice. Beans and rice that came with the enchiladas and burritos were both good and cooked well. The tres leches cake was outstanding! The balance of sweetness and the tart berries layered in the cake gave great texture as most tres leches cakes can sometimes be one dimensional. This was not Mexican food. It's watered down Mexican for white North Shore. Saturday night it wasn't even that busy and they were out of a specialty margarita and we're unapologetic about it. Our waiter could not have been less attentive or more unbothered about anything. The salsas they brought out were completely tasteless with their stale chips. I ordered the crab ceviche, whatever you do, do not order this. It is completely without taste or texture or anything. When I asked him what the skinny ceviche was, he said shrimp and that's it. He didn't give me any other description. The queso fundito was half melted, so not that good. Plus, it came out before our drinks even got to the table. I had to wave at our waiter to ask for another round, he could see I wasn't eating my ceviche and said not a word. I can't believe this place even has three stars. I can't believe people in Winnetka even eat here. It was so bad. i'm getting two stars because my husband had enchiladas con mole, which it wasn't even on the menu, and it was pretty good. This place was recommended by Diane at Lifetime Fitness as I'm always up for trying Mexican places especially in the North Shore. I have to support el gente! Unfortunately they didn't support me. My son and I came here for lunch and we were really greeted as the bartender served as the host and a few other employees were doing stuff around the restaurant. We were seated and my son was hungry so I ordered his food right away which was Quesadillas con Queso. They came out quick but it would've been helpful to let me know the rice was a little spicy. If you need a high chair for someone at the table, you should probably let them know about the spice in the rice. Other than that, he ate the food. I asked for milk as well. I ordered the Carne Asada (yes a heavy my lunch order) but obvs I was hungry. It was very good and had some sort of marinade but couldn't figure out what it was. The rice and beans were bad as the rice didn't taste fresh and the beans were blah. Also I had to ask for more corn tortillas since I only got 3. The service was ok and I was never asked what I wanted to drink. My biggest beef was when other patrons (all Caucasian) walked into the restaurant, they were greeted immediately and made a hell of a lot more welcome than us. It was weird to hear how over accommodating that same person who was on his computer when we walked in, jumped off his seats for the other patrons walking in. We had a very disappointing experience right before Christmas. We ordered ahead with a specific pickup time. Despite placing the order early it was not ready on time. We waited about 15 minutes for the order. While that could be excused, 2 members of our party got food poisoning. I filled out the survey provided by the restaurant the next day and informed them what happened. I really expected a follow up and apology. My husband and I just had dinner here. We ordered two taco dinners. After an hour and realizing everyone in the restaurant had received their dinners before us, my husband looked for the manager, "S". He could not have been ruder or more dismissive. He told us that the kitchen is busy and turned his back on us. We've been coming here for years, and do not plan to return. The prices were moderate as was the food....nothing special here for the three of us. Starting with a dollop of guacamole (which was 12.99 and listed at 11 on the menu?) which was very small yet tasty. The decorative chips in it were cold and soggy meaning the bowl was previously prepared and sitting in the fridge. The table chips and salsa were plentiful but the salsa was nothing special. Drinks were fine but we stayed with beer. Main courses were uninspired...my chicken fajitas were pretty good but were accompanied by mostly green peppers with a rare onion to be found. They were hot and I ate the three relatively small tortillas with all the chicken and some veggies but it lacked a direction.... The side plate of accompaniments was the traditional boring plate of refried beans, almost as much guac as our appetizer, salsa which was bland and some tired rice. Friends had similar opinions on their salmon enchiladas and chicken enchiladas. Service was above average and the place wasn't crowded. We decided to give this restaurant a try yesterday on the recommendation of a family member. We arrived promptly for our reservation and were immediately seated. The waiter came to the table with menus and brought chips and salsa. The chips and salsa were good but nothing out of the ordinary. The chips were thin and the salsa was flavorless. We placed our order after a quick review of the menu. My wife ordered the Mahi Mahi Tacos. The order came with three Mahi tacos. Topped with guacamole, pico de gallo, queso and cilantor. Rice and beans on the side. The tacos were slathered with guacamole and overwhelmed the Mahi's lightly seared flavor. I ordered the Enchiladas Suizas. The order came with three enchiladas cooked in a mild ranchero sauce and topped with melted cheese. Served with rice and beans on the side. My dish was served room temperature and soggy. I expected the ranchero sauce to have a slight kick of heat or spice. It had neither. The ranchero sauce tasted like a cold marinara sauce and had no flavor. The tortillas instead of being crisp were soggy. I ordered chicken, but honestly I couldn't taste it under the cold, soggy mess on my plate. I asked the server for hot sauce. The hot sauce was never brought to our table. It was my wife's birthday so we ordered dessert. We ordered the flan and fried ice cream. The wait staff brought the flan and fried ice cream to the table and sang Happy Birthday to my wife. The fried ice cream and presentation were superb. The fried ice cream was served with whip cream and was ice cold and had a strong, flavorful hint of vanilla and sugar. It was amazing and really enjoyable after our meal. The flan was also nicely presented and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone at our table. I really wanted to enjoy this place. The restaurant is beautiful, well lit, and clean. However, I came to eat dinner not take in the scenery. Overall, "A recipe has no soul. The cook must bring soul to the recipe." What this place is missing is the soul of Latin cuisine. read more

I wish there was a way to write a review without stars. I am a delivery driver (such as grub hub, door dash, postmates..etc) I arrived at this location a few minutes after receiving the pick up request on my phone. When I arrived to the restaurant, the gentleman (Brian, is what I'm told his name is) asked me how he could help me and I kindly gave him the name of the pick up order. He explained that the order was not yet ready and to have a seat on the benches near by. After about 20 min, the host checked in with me to ask me the name on my order again, and told me they were working on it. (mind you, the order was 1 dish. that's all) 10 min later, annoyed, I asked the host if there was any update on the order and she said she would check in the back. She came back after a few minutes and said that my order was being packed up and it would be a few more minutes. Another 10 minutes went by another employee asked me for the name on my order. Annoyed, I gave him the name and he told me he would go and check. I saw him walk to the kitchen, walk out, to never return to give me an update on my order. At this point I stood up and walked over near the host stand quite pissed off and asked again for the status of my order. The host apologized and said it would be out shortly. Another 10 minutes went by. I was fuming at this point. Brian, the guy at the beginning of this nightmare of a story, approached me and said "Gordas, name on the order?" I stood in shock. For those of you who don't know, "Gordas" translates to fat, fatty, chubby, fatso, plump, porky...etc Once again, I gave the name of my order. I watched him walk to the kitchen, walk out, and then walk to another table and start laughing with the guests. Im not sure what gave him the thought that he could call me this. Did he think my blue eyes meant I couldn't understand Spanish. Did he think that this was the appropriate way to address me... especially while waiting there for over 50 min waiting for an order that should have been ready by the time I walked in. Just as I was able to say something, the host walked over with my order. I grabbed it out of her hands and walked out.... I have never, in my entire life ever had an experience like this. This was the most unprofessional and disgusting action I've ever seen displayed in my life. You should be ashamed of yourself, and frankly...FIRED! read more

We have searching for a replacement for LasPalmas Highland Park, it's been years and we have not found a replacement. We drive by Guanajuato frequently, it's always busy. We decided to try, made an open table reservation. Upon arrival we seated and all appeared we may have found that special place. Not going to happen. My wife ordered a drink and it was lacking flavor depth. We placed our order, my wife, shrimp Acapulco and I ordered Tampiquena. Our orders were served in just a few moments - portions were generous but the food was varying temperatures, my enchilada had a sauce that was very bitter. My skirt steak was flavorful but was not grilled to order it was re heated. My wife's shrimp was not the quality worthy of the $30 price. Speaking of prices - according to yelp their prices listed on yelp must be pre pandemic they were all under $20 for an entree but on the the menu prices for specialty entrees ranged from $26-$30. I understand inflation but if your going to raise prices let's cover all the published bases. Another concern was the dinner plates and accessory bowls. Most were chipped and this is not good - chips breed bacteria!!!!! Their were families dining with small and young kids - scary. We were hopeful- the waiter was great. First our waiter, Zach was great! He was very attentive and we were never left waiting for him. He recommended these great margaritas. It was the second one on the menu, I forgot the name. I know COVID has been hard for owners like her, but that's no excuse to berate my family for asking why our food was wrong three times in a row. We have ordered from here a handful of times. It's hit and miss, but mainly miss. The guac is really good and the enchiladas are decent as well. Every time we order from here they forget at least one meal. Tonight we were missing my burrito dinner. The tacos are mediocre (the ones in the flour tortillas are much better than the corn tortillas, which we all found inedible), but the nachos were also inedible. Order to pick up on a Sunday early evening, just before a holiday, due in part to a friend's highly recommendation. Menu's prices seemed fair and selection was interesting. Picked mole enchiladas with beef and chicken enchiladas suizas, waiter said order will be ready in 20 minutes, stepped in 15 minutes, was ready to wait for it, surprisingly order was ready to go!! We get home in less than five minutes!! Food was cold and soggy, very poor presentation and the smallest enchiladas I ever seen, side dishes were like a baby's portion size! Flavor was flat and insipid, frankly those enchiladas were awful and super overpriced.
