Went to La Taquiza for lunch with a friend recently and was really happy with the choice. The restaurant is right in the middle of Downtown Winnetka and has a great authentic Mexican feel to it. Service was quick and spot on and the tacos were top notch. I ordered a Barbacoa and two steak tacos and loved both of them. The Barbacoa was very well cooked and super melty. The steak tacos were literally some of the best I've ever had. They do an amazing job chopping the steak super tiny to avoid a chewy taco. So tender! The salsas are also great. They have 3 salsas that you can help yourself to. The spiciest one was my favorite. Definitely not for the faint of heart but very tasty and fresh. Will definitely be going back! read more

La Taquiza Winnetka was once one of our neighborhood staples--reliable, flavorful, and consistent. Unfortunately, over the last couple of months, the experience has shifted noticeably, and not for the better. Whether due to new ownership or new staff (though no official announcement has been made), the quality of service and overall reliability has declined. Small mistakes such as mixed-up or missing items became increasingly common. While forgivable in isolation, their frequency was disappointing. However, the most recent experience went beyond inconvenience into outright disrespect. After we called to report a clear order error, the employee on the phone refused to acknowledge the mistake and chose instead to hang up on us mid-conversation. Not only did the restaurant fail to take accountability, but the dismissive and snippy attitude crossed a line no customer should have to tolerate. In a neighborhood with plenty of dining options--Fondita just blocks away and several others only a short drive--restaurants are naturally compared against one another. When service feels inconsistent or interactions leave a negative impression, it becomes harder to choose La Taquiza over the alternatives. Mistakes happen in every restaurant. Regulars understand that. But when an establishment shows indifference and disrespect rather than hospitality and ownership, it forces diners to reconsider where they spend their money. For the area, the prices seem reasonable, cute spot, good customer service, many bev and bite options to choose from, lots of specials offered throughout the week, house salsa provided in the cooler. The main challenge I had was with the cutlery and dishware used. I split a breakfast burrito which was served on something like parchment paper in a plastic bowl. The cutlery was eco friendly, i.e. biodegradable. Upon attempting to eat the burrito with the cutlery, the eco fork would bend, the eco knife would bend, the burrito wrap had endurance, i.e. very difficult to slice; and all the while the food ended up being pushed around the basket and the parchment paper tearing, with some food on top of the paper, some underneath. So the execution left something to be desired. I guess you could pick it up and eat it with your hands. I told my wife, the good news is that you are saving the planet, the bad news is, that you are going to starve to death because you are unable to get the food into your mouth. LOL. read more

I'm a regular. Order the burritos and tacos, ingredients that move and are fresh and you'll be fine. I tried a tamale tonight and it was the worst one I've ever had. It was like a frozen burrito that you cooked too long in the microwave, making the ends waaayyy overcooked and hard as a rock, which is probably what they did. I'm certain it came straight from the freezer and baked too long in the microwave. Horrible. But I still like their burritos and tacos. Just don't order the tamales. read more

we ordered takeout from LTW and had a great first time experience with our order. our delivery guy paul was also terrific and brought the food warmed well enough after an 18 min. drive from the restaurant. here's what we had... chips and salsa--the chips were warm and sturdy enough that they didn't break. the pico was YUM! refried beans and a quesadilla--packed well and the quesadilla is huge! also really good. grilled marinated shrimp burrito bowl--my SO inhaled it. generous with the shrimp and great flavors. chicken tortilla soup--one of the best he's had; again, with a generous portion. fajita dinner (veg only)--nicely warmed tortillas, good selection of vegetables, incl rice and refried beans for sides. i loved their green salsa. fish taco--one of the best tacos that my husband has ever eaten! we will definitely order from LTW again, and absolutely loved the menu. read more

Great food and cool looking place in a super charming area. I loved the lively atmosphere. I actually never noticed this restaurant and was pleasantly surprised when I walked in and tried it. Great food and really nice staff. I had an asada torta and the elote in a cup and it was all great. Will definitely be back quite often here. read more

My friends and i all had a torta plate milanesa de pollo and al pastor. the milanesa was burnt and hard, absolutely no flavor. waste of money two plates were 49 dollars. I met Alex and Marlene and they were amazing. I tried the food was absolutely amazing from the churros to the quesabirria. I also ordered plantains and they were perfect.The staff were extremely friendly and the restaurant was so clean. If you're in the north shore specifically in Winnetka this is the perfect taco spot. read more

I can't believe it's taken me so long to try La Taquiza, but we are big taco nano fans so when it comes to casual Mexican food we tend to go there. However, I promised my son and his friend a trip to Fizz & Pop (a favorite of all kids) and La Taquiza is conveniently located next door. Unfortunately, they were closed for a private party when we arrived on Friday, but we took our order to go and had a little "picnic" on the bench in the hallway. We had to wait about 20 min for our food, which i think is probably a bit longer than usual due to the private party, but it wasn't too big of a deal. The staff who work here were also super nice and friendly...and very apologetic about us not being able to sit inside the restaurant. The kids ordered quesadillas, which were gigantic. One quesadilla at taco nano isn't usually enough for my kids, but this was so big it was more than enough food. They must have been good or maybe were very hungry boy so they ate every last bite. I tried to go as healthy as possible with the po quito bowl (with steak). It was really tasty and I'd probably order the same thing next time, although maybe with shrimp next time. We also all enjoyed some chips (and there went healthy) with some guac. Everyone left satisfied and I told the rest of my family I'll have to them again soon! Surprisingly good food for a good price. The portions could've been bigger considering other Mexican restaurant portions, but the flavors are spot on. The chicken quesadilla was essentially one flour tortilla stuffed and folded in half, which was a good kids item. The lengua and grilled chicken burritos both did not disappoint. Everything was mixed so you got a good bite of most everything throughout vs meat in some bites, rice in another. But it just didn't feel generous because there wasn't as much filling as I would've thought. And there's a pattern, because themrice and beans $3 additional add on for many of the entrees wasn't a ton of food, but was delicious. Their menu is huge - we'll be back to try more options, great to know there are more authentic Mexican options nearby that don't cost an arm and a leg! read more

My wife and I stumbled upon this place earlier this Spring, and I'm so glad we did. It is a good-looking, clean, spacious restaurant. When you walk in, head towards the back, where you order at the counter. Being our first time, we wanted to try a variety of items. We ordered chips and salsa, a steak taco, a Baja shrimp taco, and a cheese quesadilla. We also tried their Margaritas. They make their own Margaritas and put them in a cute, single-serving bottle. Everything was delicious! A word of warning: they make some of the hottest salsa I've ever had. It was a little too hot for my wife, but I loved it! If you ever find yourself on the North Shore and looking for good Mexican Food, give La Taquiza a shot. read more

New Mexican restaurant in downtown Winnetka!! Yay! Who wants Mexican food for brunch? I do so I gave it a try. The ladies working there were really nice and helpful as I couldn't decide what I wanted to order. I just ordered my usual and had to try the quesadilla just for fun. I only had $20 (thanks to Melissa) as they didn't have their credit card machine yet. Tostada with steak - delicious Quesadilla with pork - very tasty and flavorful! I would definitely get it again (but want to try other items on the menu) I will definitely be coming back to support this restaurant and try other items off the menu so stay tune. They are located where Cafe Buongiorno used to be on the corner. There are a few seats outside. read more

We showed up hungry with high expectations and no other options. The food came quickly, yet we were incredibly disappointed in the quality. My tamale was burnt, and the elotes were soupy and lukewarm. The tortilla soup was okay. The torta had unmelted shredded cheese and came warm at best. All in all, we were left hungry and unsatisfied. I've been waiting for La Taquiza Winnetka to open every since I saw the 'coming soon!' sign in the window. Winnetka is parched for new restaurants since losing two in the last month, and Mexican in particular. I understand that this family has two other locations, one in Northbrook and one in Glenview, but I haven't tried those (yet). I walked by this morning and saw that La Taquiza was open, so I popped in for a menu and met Marla, who was super friendly and said they had *just* opened. It wasn't hard to convince my family to place an order for lunch, and we're happy to say that we LOVED everything about La Taquiza. We had asada tacos, a chicken tinga burrito, and the chicken flautas, plus chips and salsa and a hibiscus agua fresca. The tacos were well-stuffed with meat, onion, cilantro, and lettuce and were demolished before I could try them, but my son said they were really good. My other son devoured his chicken tinga burrito and said it was super good, in fact, he liked it better than the burrito he usually gets at a different place we regularly frequent. I had the flautas and was really impressed with the quantity (4), how much delicious chicken they crammed in them, and the freshness of the lettuce and tomato on the side. This was no pale and wimpy iceberg lettuce. Mine was also served with rice and beans, both of which were flavorable. The flautas are on the Antojitos menu for only $11, but this was enough food for a giant lunch or two small meals. Our chips and salsa came with three kinds of salsa: a red, a tomatillo, and an orange (I don't know what it's called) -- I'm listing them in order of increasing spiciness. All of them had great flavors. We called ahead and were given pick-up directions: pull into the alley just south of the Laundry, cash only, and tell them the amount you're giving them so they can have your change ready. Fantastic place and so thrilled to have found it! Was a spontaneous post workout class dinner and the hot Cheetos burrito is awesome and the marg hit the spot! The atmosphere is really very cozy bright and happy and it has high ceilings which I love haha so random. The cashier brought me free chips and guac which was so nice and the guac is perfect and the chips really fresh and crisp!!!! Cant wait to come back soon. read more

This small place is a gem. Our youngest so. Wanted Mexican before he headed back to college. We lived in Arizona for a long time and became accustomed to good Mexican food; we've been a bit underwhelmed by what we've had on the north shore. Enter La Taquiza. We had a burrito, which was stuffed with meat, rich, and beans. The stuffing was perfect toy distributed so that each bite provide a lovely mix of flavors. It was a handful and then some. Quite lovely. The taqueria were crisp, without being dry (harder than it appears) and the burrito bowl was packed with delicious flavors. The red and green Chile sauce was perfect. The green was spicy, but nuanced. The red was subtle, but sophisticated. Yum. It was tasty, affordable, and quick. We're going back! read more

Crispy, but not dry. Yum! My spouse had the burrito bowl. She was disappointed that there was not a tortilla in it, but it was easy enough to supplement with chips at home. Like most taco-centered places, they don't have good vegetarian taco options. They have the standard, non-effort option of throwing some fajita veggies in a corn tortilla. Their other option is even more boring, slapping some guac in a tortilla. Come on, be better than that. Have a mushroom taco, a plantain taco, potato, cactus, jackfruit, fake chorizo or fake chicken. Come up with like two interesting sauces. It really shouldn't be this hard. The churros are fantastic though. read more
