In July 2025, I had to make that difficult decision to place my wife in memory care. Ivy Park's Evergreen Memory Care Unit was the family's choice. The staff members at Ivy Park were very knowledgeable, understanding, accommodating, and compassionate. The first step was an evaluation by professional Evergreen caregivers to ensure my wife would thrive at Evergreen. Once it was determined Evergreen was a good fit, Ailee, Lindsey and Pamela made the transition relatively stress free. They were concerned for both my wife's and my emotional and physical wellbeing, and they always made time to talk with me! Once my wife was in Ivy Park's Evergreen Unit, access to visit her was never any issue. The first impression of the facility was that it was very neat and tidy and very clean. Next, the caregivers, staff, and residents all looked happy, and the residents well cared for. The residents all have different needs, and the caregivers are aware of those needs. Food is important, and the food is very good as well! My wife has enjoyed the meals and snacks provided at Evergreen. Mikayla, Memory Car Director, keeps detailed records on the residents, and she knows who the residents are and their needs. Milkayla is extremely efficient. She always has time for you; plus, she will always return a call or email. The Evergreen Unit runs extremely efficiently! Mikayla does a great job being the director! Crystal, Activities Director, is very smart and cleaver selecting activities that engage the both the mind and body of all the residents. Crystal is upbeat and on the move all the time. She is extremely patient and kind to all the residents. Crystal has a true passion for the job. She cares about all the residents. Special events like movie night, Pumpkin Patch, etc are nice for both the resident and family members. These events take time and effort to plan and execute, and they are well done and fun for all! These events are greatly appreciated by both the resident and family members. Kayla, caregiver, has been one of the primary caregivers helping my wife to make the transition into Evergreen. My wife has had some issues making the transition, and Kayla has been exceptionally patient with her during this time. Kayla always remains upbeat, positive, and ready to help. She is unflappable! Adriana, Resident Care Coordinator, is very active in ensuring everything is going well in Evergreen Unit. She keeps a high profile and ensures the residents' needs are being met. Adriana has a very calm demeanor, and the residents respond to her presences in a positive way. Adriana listens to the family members and residents. She is always ready to help. It is a team effort supplying quality care for the residents. Individuals working in the Evergreen Unit are very special people! The bottom line is that staff and caregivers are extremely passionate about their work in caring for the residents! Finally, the residents are respected for who they are!

I have looked at most assisted living communities in Bakersfield and chose Ivy Park at Seven Oaks…read more Brookdale, Rosewood and Ivy Park all have nice facilities, but I chose Ivy Park because it has only 60 apartments serving less than 75 residents. Management led by Pam, have selected staff who are patient, competent and cheerful carrying out every need of my mother Nancy's daily schedule. Her primary caregivers--Angela, Jenny, and Jordon--are personable and understand my mom's needs well. You pay rent at IVY for your 1 or 2 room apartment with kitchen and bathroom granite countertops in immaculate rooms. The common areas which include a couple of large living rooms, workout, game, formal dining, bar, movie and game rooms are beautiful and residents are charged a one-time fee equal to a months rent for their use. Residents order from a menu with daily specials. The dining room staff are friendly and create an elegant space for community interaction. The food quality and variety of choices are outstanding. The assisted living costs are based on a points system that is based on each resident's care. I found the total costs less than keeping Mom in her house with 8 hours of care givers. I find IVY is superior care than having one care giver in her house for personalized care. The quality of care is just better at IVY and I do not have to worry when the care giver doesn't show up to the house. IVY also has a hair and nail salon right next to Nancy's room. Cecilia washes and styles her hair every week at very competitive prices. The medical staff watch over Nancy's prescriptions and work with Around the Clock RNs and PT staff for health concerns like wound care. The PT staff have kept mom strong preventing falls. The front desk reception staff, Michelle, Sue and Natasha log everyone coming in and out of their facility and create a calm and welcoming environment. They also ensure Amazon, Target and Walmart packages get to the apartments. Natasha is director of billing and can help with your insurance claims for LTC. The marketing department can give you a tour. Ailey and Lindsay are low key and will not continuously call you like some of the other facilities. Ailey was able to explain hospice and memory care if my mom is unable to remain in her apartment due to higher levels of required care. She is easy to talk to and has the answers. She was also key to me selecting IVY over Rosewood and Brookdale. Nancy has been at IVY since APR 2025. When I moved her to IVY, she pointed at me and said I will never forgive you. This is a common reaction when it is time to move out of the house. Mother loves IVY and does not remember those remarks to me and my wife Suzan. She is busy and loves living with her cat, Princess. I want to thank the entire caring Staff at Ivy Park for a job well done.

Even though I live 300 miles from Bakersfield, Tim researched and found the best placement based on my criteria. He was kind, thoughtful and hard working. Myself and my family are grateful for Tim and the help he has given us.

As parents age and need more care, you want to help them, but we have our own lives and responsibilities. Five years ago we moved my 92-year-old mother-in-law into a community home (Magnolia Place). It has been a wonderful place. Expensive, yes, but the service was good to above average. And, when COVID hit, we were happy Mom was in a safe place. Two years ago, when Mom's mental faculties declined, she moved into the memory care section. Again a price increase, but the family members supplemented her pension, and we could barely get by. Then, they announced a price increase for 2023. Mom, now almost 98, has severe dementia. We needed to find another place for her. At first we tried Care.com. They referred us to several places, most out of our price range. Someone mentioned we check out Bakersfield Senior Placement. We contacted Tim Kounter, and after a brief interview, we knew we were in excellent hands. Tim listened to our needs, heard about Mom, and soon we scheduled a morning to visit four different Residential Care Facilities. There's paperwork when you move into these places. Tim helped us get that in order. The four RCF's we visited were suitable for Mom's condition. Each had its own amenities. I appreciated Tim took the lead to start the interviews. He knew what questions to ask, even the tough ones. We narrowed our choices down to two. Tim offered guidance when we asked, but had no agenda on which home we chose. Bakersfield Senior Placement does not charge to help you find a place. Each home has a base fee, then a care fee dependent on the resident's need. This is a tough job for any family member, but it has to be done. It was nice to have someone like Tim to help us through the process.

My mom, 80, was fiercely independent but three cancer surgeries made it necessary to either get 24/7 in-home health care or move into assisted living. We could not afford caregivers at home, and chose the Hallmark. What a blessing. The staff... care providers, housekeepers, maintenance workers and food services... were very professional and truly cared about my mom's well being. Fourteen months later, her strength and agility had improved to the point that she could return home and live independently. Six years passed, and last summer, my mom started having serious heart problems. After a brief stay in the hospital and physical rehab, she returned home only to slip and fall and break her pelvic bone. That led to more hospitalization and more rehab. She could not do the things at home that she needed to do to be on her own. I began looking at assisted living options based on referrals from a case manager at the rehab center. Wow... the typical charges were $1000-$2000 more per month than the Hallmark's fees. So, I moved her, now 86, back to the Hallmark. Many of the same staff members were still working at the facility. They were sincerely glad to be able to help my mom who was going through a tough time. There is a lot of trite talk from business and sports team owners about how their organizations are like a family. Those are just sound bites. However, the Hallmark staff does take great interest in the residents and treat them like family. I have seen them do this with my mom and countless others. My mom had more heart issues at the end of summer and had to be hospitalized, again. When she finished rehab, she was back at the Hallmark. The care plan had been changed to accommodate her specific needs, and she showed improvement through the holidays. Then, earlier this year, another episode of heart failure, but this time it was accompanied by lung compilations. At the hospital, after she regained some strength, she wanted to go back to the Hallmark. Hospice care was added to her treatment plan. I was hopeful she would find a plateau and maintain an acceptable quality of life for a while. It did not happen, and it became clear her condition was deteriorating. I saw Hallmark staffers at different times leaving her apartment with tears in their eyes. They hovered over her in her last days tending to my mom's every need until she passed. I can honestly say that the Hallmark family brought joy to my mom's life. You can pay a lot more for amenities at other assisted living facilities, but you will not get better care than the care provided at the Hallmark. They are good people.

It's very hard on dementia patients to move them and also hard to find a place so when you're paying almost $90,000 a year for Care you would think that would be enough.
