Let's begin with the fact that this Guinness Brewery is the only Guinness Brewery outside of Ireland. This past week I convinced my wife, my nephew and his wife to join me at the Guinness Brewery for Brunch. Sadly after waiting in line for the Brewery to open with many others. We were informed that they were not serving Brunch that Sunday. After propping up this expectation of a good Irish Brunch, I was not just disappointed, I was embarrassed. Having spent more then thirty years in the Restaurant Business it was pretty obvious that the whole operation is dreadfully understaffed. And sadly the staff on hand had lost all of the enthusiasm of a facility that at its opening had an outstanding group of employees when they opened. The menu in the Taproom was extremely limited and was served by a staff that seemed to be wishing that they were anyplace other then where we dining. Our food was unimaginative and lacking in presentation. Even the supposed Smith Island Cake lacked , as it was 7 layers as opposed to the usual 16 layers. Let me finish by saying this entire facility is designed to be spectacular. The truth is that this facility needs Management that encourages positive experiences and ensures tasty memories for their patrons to leave with. read more

Oh. My. Gosh. When I heard that this place was opening near Baltimore, it instantly jumped onto my Want to Go list! Having been to the St. James Gate storehouse/brewery in Dublin, my expectations were pretty dang high for this place. Also, seeing as it's the only Guinness Brewery in the US, I felt like it had to be special. I am pleased to say this place is fantastic! There is tons of parking when you drive up. When you walk past the friendly security who are checking ID, it honestly feels like you're in a dreamland for beer-lovers! There are tons of tables and seating on their front lawn, a super cute Guinness food truck serving items like fish tacos, and there was even an ice cream cart!! I wanted to check out the bar since I was on limited time, but man did all that put a smile on my face. As I walked up the steps, the excitement built. Would the beer here be as good as Dublin? What will the food taste like? Walking through the doors, it was pretty packed (~2pm on a Saturday). There's a gift shop to the right, and the bar to your left. I went straight for the bar as I was there by myself. The bartender handed my a Guinness quickly after I sat down, and that first sip- DANG THAT'S GOOD!! It was so creamy and smooth...people if you enjoy Guinness this is a MUST! To eat, I had the wings. I was in the mood for something light, but still a treat. These Old Bay seasoned wings...they were some of the best I've had!! The meat was extremely tender, and the light seasoning was super flavorful. Needless to say, the drink and the food went down real easy. I could have easily stayed here for a few more hours and tried some flights and gone on a tour, but I wanted to keep my stay short. My rating for this place is going to be mediocre at best but that's not to say that I won't be back . . . . because I definately will be (especially to take the tour). My rating is based soley on my thoughts on the beer (The facility is fabulous and I can't wait to come back for the tour and learn more.) Lately I've been frequenting craft breweries in the area and around the country when traveling. I've always liked stouts, and for a long time Guinness was my second favorite. Then craft breweries began springing up and the gap began to widen between my favorite and what had been second. I am honestly excited to have a Guinness brewery right in my backyard (and look forward to future limited edition offerings). And lately I've been into the bourbon barrel aged beers and was excited to see they have one here. It was alright but as I've said in other reviews, I need to follow some sort of standard scale. Memorable gets you 4 stars and a beer that l will be craving on a random afternoon definately deserves 5 stars. (Of the beers in the two flights I sampled, the limited edition Chocolate Stout definately deserves 4 stars . . . . and I'm hopeful for the future.) In the words of the Terminator, "I'll be back"! Great brewery and brewery tour. Went with a group of friends, did the tour with a tasting for $18 per person. The tour was about an hour, good history lesson on the Guinness brewery, their process, and their facility in Baltimore. Tasting was effectively a flight, four 5oz pours, and was about another 30 minutes. We stuck around for lunch, which was packed. Took about 10-15 minutes to get seated. Menu was QR, uncategorized and complex to navigate/order from. Food was good. Our table ordered a variety from the menu, including the pretzel, the bread, the stew, and the crab cake sandwich. Everyone liked everything, and the stew was quite popular. All in, we were there for about 4 hours. Overall a great tour, wonderful beer and good food. We went on a Wednesday and it wasn't very crowded at all. You order from the app and have to use a credit card to order. They bring the food faster than any place i have ever been before. We all enjoyed what we got and would recommend it to anyone. The beer garden was also nice. read more

You "toucan" to me??? Yes!! I'm talkin' to you!! Come here!!!! This place "brew" me away!! If you are any kind of beer fan, you will love this one of a kind brewery! We've been to many a brewery in our day, and this one is without parallel! It not only shoots for the moon, but it reaches it! As you drive up and see that familiar GUINNESS sign majestically displayed atop their tall brick building, you are overwhelmed with a feeling of awe! My hubby's sentiments said it all "This is my Disney World, this is my Super Bowl!" Yep, he's a Guinness fan all right! We must have exclaimed "Wow!" 100 times as we toured the plant, walked thru the property and meandered around the merch shop! Guinness knows what they are doing! This is a class A beer lovers mecca! The grounds are immaculately landscaped and we loved the murals, the outdoor area has lots of seating with several fire pits to keep you toasty on chilly evenings, the décor is rustic and industrial inside and out! Even the receptacles have a cool design! The buildings have a rich history, being a previous whiskey distillery. Downstairs in the brewing area, you can walk around and read all of the plaques delineating the story behind the present brewery. You can take a self tour, or a guided tour. We wanted the guided tour, but it was booked both days we were there and even called ahead, so be sure to make plans way in advance! We loved all the iconic ads displayed everywhere, and the larger than life Guinness advertisement figures. The toucans, the seal, even the Maryland crab! These added a touch of whimsy to this multi-story craft brewery! We love the old fashioned telephone booth too! One the main level, there's a bar area which is typically crowded but super cool with the barrel décor and casual vibe. The gift shop is also on that floor and we were happily stoked to find the prices were very reasonable! We loaded up on tees, glassware, hats and even a sturdy backpack, plus lots of Knick-knacks. We went during Thanksgiving and got lots of deals! Upstairs is the restaurant. We ate there twice, once without a reservation in the evening. We put in our name, sat at the tables nearby and drank a few flights while waiting for our name to be called. We tried several of the beer varieties. My hubby enjoyed the Nitro chocolate mint brew, a festive flavor for the season. My daughter liked the raspberry blend. My son-in-law was taken with the coffee stout. But I, not being a stout drinker, preferred Blonde! We tried just about all the beers, and while it was fun to experiment with all the different choices, the guys concurred that the best is still the traditional stout! No messing with perfection! Surprisingly, we only had to wait about 30 minutes. The place was packed, so we were lucky to get in! Our table was cozy, the server was terrific and the food was good: Delicious burgers!! Perhaps one of the best choices! Great streak fries! Irish stew was yummy, tender meat and veggies - accompanying bread not so much. Try the Brick roasted chicken, juicy inside, crispy outside - amazing, accompanied with mashed potatoes, spicy greens and spoon bread (bread was too dense and dry for my taste), but the rest of the meal rocked!! We learned our lesson and made reservations for brunch the next morning! Again, impeccably good service. Our server brought out some moist and tasty banana nut mini muffins to start, they were superb! A couple of our party ordered the breakfast sandwich which was a hit! One ordered the wrap which was loaded with healthy ingredients and looked amazing served with a big bowl of fresh fruit. I got the steak and eggs with fingerling potatoes. My eggs and potatoes were perfect, but the steak was rather tough. I'll try the pancakes next time!! This was one place we didn't feel guilty about having a beer with brunch!! Being the kind of geeky, silly people we are, we all wore our toucan garb to the Guinness brewery and had a blast taking photos all over the property! We have already made plans to return and can see this being a regular destination for great beer, good food, and fabulous atmosphere! I came here with a group of 4 for drinks outside and then dinner at the restaurant upstairs. Everything from the laid back vibes to the service and beer/food was spot on! The wait for a table outside was only about 10 min and there was no wait for the restaurant. I started with the blonde and then got a seasonal passion fruit jalapeño IPA - both were so good! For apps we split a charcuterie board and buffalo wings and for dinner we all got cheeseburgers. - The charcuterie had a great presentation, more than enough meat and cheese for 4 and all the pickled veggies you could ask for - The wings came right off the bone, were perfectly crispy and had great buffalo flavor - The burger was 10/10 and I will definitely get it again when I come back! Food Quality& Order: I'll be honest, we weren't all that thrilled with the food. We agreed that we would maybe come again for the atmosphere or order more wisely. I'll start with the good. My Grandma loved her French toast. I was really happy that they carried Seedlip spirits as I'm sober. They are non alcoholic. My mom wasn't thrilled with her burger. We all kind of thought the cheeseboard was lackluster. They served my salmon and eggs over fried (with flour) Potato pancakes. That was probably the worst part. I can't have gluten which we discussed and it still came out wrong. She offered fruit while they were remaking my food but I really wasn't all that hungry after. The dessert however was A1. Loved the brewery tour and experimental beers! The after tour tasting was excellent and taught how to discover tasting notes using all of the senses. At the bar and tasting is a beer for everyone- not just the well known stout. I enjoyed that there is lots of new things to try, and all were delicious. Staff was friendly, kind, and knowledgeable. Food was absolutely delicious. Lots of room indoor and outdoor to spend time with those anccomp you. It is a very large and clean facility. Everything is reasonably priced, even merchandise in the shop. It was an excellent experience at Guinness Open Gate, I've been wanting to come for years. Stopped over during a layover on a Friday night. Pretty quiet for a Friday, definitely got a tourist place vibe. Ordered plenty of food and drink for the table, found it to be overpriced for the size of the food but it there were some pretty tasty items. $17 for the bowl of beef stew, yes of course it had guiness included and tasty, but the size got me. Fries were crispy but the beer cheese we found to be very gritty. Desserts were delicious, the sweet potato bread pudding was unique with a great maple ice cream. You order at the table using a code but don't have a server to check in to see if you need anything. When you need more ketchup, visit the bar. Deliciousness - 5/5 Happiness - 5/5 I have been on many a brewery tour - from big breweries to microbreweries, and this tour was one of the best. First, the tour was free. So that's a great deal. And the tasting (presided over by a professional guide) is only approx. $15, so that's a nice cost. We learned a lot, got to see the giant vats and casks, and sipped some great beers. That said, I highly recommend making a reservation well in advance. I had to book my tour four weeks out (granted, I went as part of a large group). What stands out is how nice every employee is. It's almost Disney World-esque in that they have plenty of employees and all of them are incredibly welcoming and courteous. We arrived a bit late for our tour and they had no problem accommodating us. Plus, there are lots of fun things on site. They have a bunch of brews you can only buy on-site, so despite Guinness being a giant beer, you get the feel of being at a craft brewery. They also have tons of the fantastic traditional Guinness artwork and a machine that etches your face on the Guinness foam (how cool is that!?). And there is a restaurant on site, although I didn't get a chance to eat there. But will I be back to visit again? Absolutely. read more

This is a fun place to check out when in the Baltimore area. It's near the airport so I've picked people up and stopped there on the way back to the city for an added visitors treat. The place is huge and I'm sure on warm days is amazing to be outside. It's been cold / rainy the times I've been there, but luckily each time was right as they opened so we were able to get seats and beers relatively quickly. It was fun to learn of all the kinds of Guinness they have - and I was very happy that they offer lighter beers! I think there is something on the menu for every kind of beer drinker! I busted Guinness Open Gate for the first time yesterday with my Dad. We booked the tour and the tasting. My Dad worked at the Calvert Distillery back in the day so I wanted to take him back to the facility to see how it changed. Guinness did a fabulous job converting an old industrial site into an amazing brewery tour and experience. The tour was great and lasted about 45 minutes followed by a great tasting with four 5 oz tasters of the Guinness Blonde, Eldorado Ale, Mango Chile, and Guinness Stout. We didn't stay to eat, but we'll definitely be back to enjoy their huge outside area complete with games and picnic tables. Definitely worth a visit! read more

The pretzels were really good and paired well with the beer offerings. The Guinness beef stew was just okay. I've heard from other accounts ttyheir restaurant meals could be better as well. Their beer offerings have much to offer and are part of a rotating schedule. The traditional pint of Guinness is not actually brewed here, so if you want the authentic beer you'd have to head over to Dublin, Ireland. Then again, if you're heading over there for an authentic Irish beer Guinness isn't it. A pint of Guinness is actually an English style beer lol. I wish 2 things--that I lived a bit closer to this place and that I knew about it earlier! This brewery is my type of joint. It doesn't beat Guinness Storehouse in Ireland, but it gets the job done in an awesome beer-filling bar food specializing atmosphere. Located right next to BWI airport, its grand appearance warrants a photo or two outside and inside with its grand. The lounging area out front is very inviting, the long tables on the main floor are great for groups, the restaurant up top has great views, and the artwork everywhere makes the visit more fun/interesting. The top floor eatery (named 1817 Restaurant) prices are a bit inflated but the food is indeed delicious. I went with the 1817 Heritage Burger (Grass-Fed Beef, Dubliner Cheddar, Bacon aïoli, Lettuce, Tomato, Braised Onion, Wedge Fries). It was juicy and great--get it done medium. Next time I'll have to try the beef stew. Also, if you're looking to only get a real casual eating experience with bar food and a beer, then consider just getting food at the Tap room (2nd floor). The actual restaurant on the top floor might be real busy (they recommend reservations). They do beer flights here if you can't decide what you want to get. However, if you're new to Guinness completely, I recommend getting their classic draught to really appreciate their history and what brought them to fame. I went on the free tour which lasted about 1 hour (books up fast so reserve a spot earlier than later). They take you downstairs to the actual brewery where the magic happens. If you're there during the week, you might see people actually working the machinery but on the weekends it's empty and just looks like a museum. Note to military folks: You can buy their alcoholic products for way cheaper at an exchange so I wouldn't buy any canned or bottled beer here unless you need it ASAP and you're already there. Bottom Line: A hugely impressive building featuring brewery tours, a taproom, a restaurant, a store and a whole lot more. Ironically I learned about Guinness Open Gate from one of my west coast coworkers. Totally dumbfounded that I didn't know about it I went to check it out and I was immediately impressed by the voluminous building and sprawling site. Nope, you can't miss it! Aside from the impressive curb appeal, Guinness features a taproom, restaurant, store, tours, etc. After walking through the large gated courtyard and ascending the long stair case I started my experience in the downstairs taproom which has a bar and lots of tables and stools. I was able to try a variety of Guinness beers many of which are experimental and only brewed in Baltimore. Guinness only serves beer so those who don't drink beer might not find it much fun. But if you're into tasting beer and experimental beer this facility has lots of promise! The taproom was definitely lively and rather loud so I was glad the upstairs restaurant, called 1817, was a bit quieter. The restaurant at Open Gate features a mix of Irish fare and Maryland inspired dishes like Shepherds Pie, Bangers and Mash, Rockfish, oysters, etc. Part of the menu includes different experimental dishes that come and go. When I visited I had a Rockfish and crab dish that was good but not good enough for the price point. The table also shared various apps, a flight of desserts and the fresh bread. Even though I didn't love my entree I enjoyed the meal overall, which I washed down with a seasonal sour beer. Additionally, our sever did a good job keeping up with our party of eight. I definitely plan to return to Open Gate for a tour so I can learn why Guinness set up shop in the Baltimore area and to find out what the building use to be before Guinness moved in. read more

This is a great place to drink and hangout. There is LOTS of seating inside with the full service bar and restaurant and a whole area outside with corn hole and picnic tables. The food is pretty standard. The menu seems to rotate a lot so I would call beforehand if there is something you want. The pretzel was really good. It was soft and was enough to share between 3 people. The flatbread was meh... it didn't really have much flavor is a good crust. It tasted mostly like mozzarella cheese. The wings were nice and crispy. The old bay seasoning is REALLY strong but I'm Maryland that's pretty normal lol. I'm not a big beer drinker so it was nice that they had food options that I could enjoy while others drank. Great place to be when the weather is nice outside! The staff is also really nice as well. I have been trying for years to make it to Guinness but it isn't near me. Well, I finally got to this side of the county today! This place is huge. Lots of outdoor seating and two levels of seating indoor. We were immediately greeted at the gate (IDs checked) and then explained how the place was laid out and where to go. We had my Mother-In-Law with us, who is in a wheelchair, so the host directed us to the elevators, which are hidden under the stairs. Once inside, we were told that there is limited table service. i.e. you scan a QR code on the table, place your order on your phone and it is brought to you. A very limited menu for food, but the two main entrees, crb cake and burger, were both really good. Well cooked and excellent flavor. There were lots of beer choices, especially several that you can;t get elsewhere. One thing I didn't like was that the flights were pre-set. You couldn't get a flight of beers you pick. You had to select the three they created. Not a huge deal, but I really like to pick my own flight. Overall, a fun brewery to visit for good food and great beers! read more

We had a great time yesterday evening, 13 Mar, at their St. Patrick's Celebration prefixed dinner. There was a generous amount of delicious food, different brewskis, chitchat and even some teaching/learning going on all leading to a delightful evening. This is the 2nd special Guinness event we've attended and I highly recommend them. Monitor their events calendar or sign up for e-notices, especially if you live in the DMV (you'll know what DMV means if you live here-no worries). The Guinness Chef dropped in to explain and answer questions about each of the 4 courses. In between we were beguiled with brewery facts and a few tales-very witty conversations. The whole set up was seemed sort of private in the Barrel Room (tasting room). The tables were far enough apart for us to feel comfortable health-wise and being enclosed in the Barrel Room helped make us feel special. If you are a beer person and/or a foodie Guinness hits the spot. If you don't live in the DMV you could plan a visit if you fly in/out of BWI Airport or vaca in Baltimore. Even though we live only an hour away (nearer DC), we stayed overnight at a hotel about 15 minutes away. No darn DWI for us! We decided to the head to the Guinness Brewery to check out the scene. We arrived a bit early and waited for the gates to open at 11am. We wanted to sit outside and they have plenty of seating in their large outdoor patio. To order food or drink outside you need to scan a QR code and do so on your phone. The service was pretty quick, no complaints. Please tip your server since many servers in Maryland make as little as $3.30 per hour before tips. Our server had to walk across the entire "infield" to get to us, so I can see he is working and walking hard. I appreciate fast service, esp. when it comes to beer! We got the Italian pilsner and the Guinness IPA. Both were delicious and so smoooth, the Guinness trademark of quality beer. We also had an order of pretzels with cheese and mustard which were yummy. I do hope they get rid of the plastic cups and use glass cups again soon. There was some very loud pop music playing that I wished I could have just turned off. But we had to say...the outside courtyard, patio, is so generic and lacks trees or much landscaping. The inner courtyard of the patio is plastic grass. I get that this is easier for cleanup but it was just...plastic. The lights and pavers here are very generic. There is really nothing special about this outdoor space except for the toucan mural. I can see the appeal for parents of young kids. You can let your kids run around while you imbibe and hangout with friends. If you want to use the bathroom, you are going to have to climb about 20 steps to get there. (Maybe this is how they deter drunkenness? ;-) The restaurant is also on the second floor and it seems like many more people chose this instead of outside. There are some cool pieces of Guinness history up here too but they seem a little dusty and neglected. You can take a tour, but since the price starts at $36 per person we opted out. I am really pleased that Guinness decided to plop down a brewery in Baltimore but I really wish they had gone out of their way to make their outdoor space cooler, greener, and more inviting. read more

Fun place to visit if you're in Maryland. We had family fun, made time for a dinner reservation with some of their flights- loved the bourbon taste like beer, pineapple , and one of our favorite- the Black and Tan one We made previous reservations for the restaurant on the second floor, which you must or should if that's what you're looking for: a sit down dinner with ac and typical restaurant vibe. Or you also have options of eating for the food truck at the patio area - and or pretzels with cheese from the bottom bar- That's if you're looking to have a more relaxing- or chill dinner with whoever you are. It's a family friendly area. With outdoor games, live entertainment, and just a large outdoor patio area with lounge tables to hang out. It's no secret they produce great beer at this location in the Baltimore Blonde. However, there are some other nice options or you could just enjoy a cold Guinness. Great property with a lot of area to hang out. read more

This Guinness brewery is one of the main reasons I decided to visit Baltimore. Most people I know weren't even aware there was a Guinness brewery outside of Dublin. This location happens to be celebrating its first anniversary in August. The grounds and building are very attractive and inviting. They offer a one hour tour plus an optional beer tasting afterwards for $15. Be sure to reserve in advance because it seems to usually be sold out for walk-ins. Our guide was Jim who was very personable, knowledgeable, and humorous. He made the tour interesting and enlightening. We got to taste four beers--Guinness Blonde, Guinness Experimental Beer, the Draught Stout, and Guinness Innovation Core Beer. Afterwards, you can shop for souvenir glasses, t-shirts, and other Guinness items including 4 packs of beer in the gift shop. Then you can go to the Tap Room and order various flights of unique and experimental beer along with familiar ones and also order food. The restaurant upstairs is only open Thursday through Sunday. I've been to the Guinness brewery a dozen or so times. Today was the third time we had the worst waitress I've ever experienced. She told us that they are not serving brunch despite advertising it, didn't bring the coffee we ordered, could not identify the beers she brought, ripped the menus from my hand, and dropped the payment device on my wife's plate. When we've gone and had a different server the experience was great. Luckily Guinness is sold elsewhere because I will not return. read more

This is a great place for groups. We started off our visit with a tour of their brewery which I recommend. The tour costs $18 per person which starts with the tour guide explaining their brewing process and the history of Guinness and ends with a tasting of their beers. Very informative and enjoyable. The tours sell out early so make sure you book in advance if you plan to go there. They also have a indoor restaurant and an outdoor seating area with plenty of food options.
