The food was decently surprising for a touristy restaurant in Gulf Shores. I had the Mahi Tacos which were pretty good, maybe would've preferred 3 instead of 2 of them but no big deal, and the side of red beans and rice was great, but note it does have sausage in it so if you can't eat pork, take note. The chips and salsa it came with were also refreshing. My fiancée got the Islamorada Chicken and found it to be well cooked, not too dry, and surprisingly good for just being a chicken dish. The vegetables and rice were fine but nothing to write home about. The wait was far beyond the quoted 40 minutes, ending up over the hour mark and once seated, it took about another hour for our food to arrive. Was it worth that kind of wait? Maybe, maybe not, but we were there during what a lot of locals were calling the busiest weekend in years. The bar is available for those waiting and was relatively fast at getting drinks and the Cojito and Margarita were tasty and about evenly priced compared to everywhere else in the Gulf, maybe even slightly less expensive. The biggest downfall was the outdoor seating became an issue when it began to rain and the awning over the patio began to leak even at the back which caused one of our friends food to get soaked due to her sitting under a spot that was leaking heavily but our fantastic waitress was very apologetic. Gulf Island Grill is exactly the kind of place you want to stumble into after a long beach day -- still covered in salt and sand, and ready for something delicious. The menu had plenty of great options and everything we tried was spot-on. Most entrées were around $20, and the portions didn't disappoint. What really made our night was Tia. She was friendly, upbeat, and handled our table like a pro. You can tell she actually enjoys what she does -- and it made *us* enjoy being there even more. Food was amazing! I had the grouper Parmesan. It was perfectly cooked, had great flavor and it was nice and hot! The side items of squash/broccoli mix and island potatoes were very tasty. Oh, this was bad! Two of us ordered shrimp. It was the worst meal I have ever eaten. It all smelled and tasted weird but a few pieces smelled like poo. The other person with me said her last bite tasted like poo. When the waitress came over I was having the other people at the table compare smell two of my shrimp. She thought we were playing a game but later came back after realizing what we were doing. She knew it smelled bad and said something like the manager can't smell but it is not all fresh or something along those lines. It was SO BAD. Do not order the fried shrimp. I'm really nervous we're going to be sick all night. They did comp ONE of the shrimp meals so I guess there is that. The one star is for the comp and the waitress was nice. It's so bad! We went based on other reviews- they were lies! We waited over 30 minutes and when we got in, there were probably 6 empty tables. We ordered 2 appetizers and got those before we got drinks. In fact, we ate them both before we got drinks. The waitress said "oh, are you sure I didn't bring them?!!" We got the fried pickles & cheddar artichoke dip. The pickles were ok but the artichoke dip has zero artichokes! I got a salad which was ok, not great. My mom and niece got the pasta which had little flavor & was greasy. Then a guy came and took our photo and tried to sell it to us for $20. Atmosphere was ok- it couldn't decide what it wanted to be but seemed like a mix of many touristy places. We called ahead to ask if there was a wait and were told no. We arrived less than five minutes later only to be told there was suddenly a 35-minute wait. We put our name and number down--there wasn't anyone else waiting--and headed to the bar for a drink while we waited outside. In that time, we saw multiple tables get up and leave, and even watched a walk-in party get seated while we were still waiting after 15-20 minutes. When we went back inside to check, the host was extremely rude, rolled her eyes, and told the other host they could seat us now. Honestly, the host was the worst part of the experience--clearly miserable and not welcoming at all. Once we were finally seated, the service at the table was decent. Nothing exceptional, but polite and fine. The highlight of the visit was definitely the food. The shrimp, chicken tenders, and Alfredo were all very good--hot, flavorful, and well-prepared. All in all, the kitchen did a great job, but the front-of-house experience--especially the attitude from the host--really took away from what could have been a great night. read more

I really don't understand all the negative reviews. We went here for our last night of spring break, and it was a great decision! Out of everywhere we ate over break, this place had the fastest service. We got our food in less than 15 minutes. The servers were nice and checked in frequently. The food was delicious. I got the chicken Alfredo and it was great! I loved their garlic bread too. Their ribeye was perfectly medium rare. I was a bit skeptical when I walked in due to the atmosphere, but it grew on me. Rounding up as our food was very good. Service was a bit unorganized and spotty, but everyone was pleasant and friendly. We were seated quickly, but then it seemed as if they weren't sure who should be our server. The host ended up helping us most of the time, and while they were more than 1/2 full, they weren't exactly slammed. My wife got the Caribbean Shrimp Kabob Dinner. It was a nice combo of shrimp, veggies, a thick slice of pineapple, and rice. All pretty good, with the pineapple being a bit unwieldy as all you get for utensils is a fork. The veggies were cooked to a soft consistency, and the shrimp was tasty. I got the Grouper Parmesan...oh my. The fish was so soft and delicious, and the sauce was quite tasty, although I left a bit behind to shave off a few calories. The potatoes were tasty, and my veggie combo was plentiful, and cooked to a soft texture like my wife's. The hush puppy had a unique outer texture, but the innards were tasty. Wine prices (and other drinks) were reasonable, and there was a decent wine selection. The food came out quickly, and we were in and out in about 45 minutes...it was just an odd service experience with no one seemingly responsible for our table. We went early to avoid the rush and found a full lobby waiting. The staff seemed pretty confused and I'm assuming their hostess did not show up to work, so they didn't know they had people waiting. We wrote our own names down and continued to wait... 15 minutes later, we were about to walk out when our name was called. We walked through the restaurant and we're still unsure what we walked into... We sat down and ordered w our server, Ashley. She brought out the kids strawberry shakes and said, just so you know, I topped the shakes, and they looked super beachy with whipped cream and cherries. It made them happy. We ordered the crab stuffed mushrooms, the Grouper Roulade, and the food was incredible!!! Regardless of the wait, and the lack of staff, the food was worth it all! Plenty of crab meat. Entrees: Bon Secour Platter - unfortunately everything on the platter was fried and I did not know.
