We traveled through Jackson on our way to Yellowstone and my daughter wanted to thank me for the trip with this special dinner. My daughter and guest ordered the wild game filet flight and I ordered the filet. Their meal was ok because they prefer rare to medium rare meat, however my meat was raw. I had ordered medium to med-well. The server returned the meat to the kitchen to bring it to what was ordered. Unfortunately, it was still rare when returned. Furthermore, the server was so busy serving a large table we were ignored most of the evening. The water servers were fantastic and kept our glasses full - best service of the evening. At the large table next to us I heard a customer complain to his friend that his meat was raw and he likes his meat "Dead and cooked". Apparently, they undercook their meat. The restaurant has a cool environment but this experience was a huge letdown. Especially due to my daughter wanting this to be a special treat for me. The restaurant did comp me on my steak. Since it was a special day, we decided to try a steakhouse we thought would be the one. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype. We ordered a ribeye, but the baked potato only came with butter and sour cream, which was a little underwhelming. The other order was an even bigger disappointment--the steak skewers were some of the toughest I've ever had, even though they were ordered medium. I have to say, overall, it was quite the letdown. The staff was friendly and the ambiance was laid-back, but unfortunately, the food just didn't impress us. I'd probably pass and try somewhere else next time. read more

Very disappointed with our first--and last--experience at this steakhouse. We had reservations for a party of six at 7:45 p.m. and were seated upstairs, where it was both uncomfortably warm. We mentioned this to the young hostess, who replied that she "had no control over that." We asked if she could at least inform a manager. Our waitress took our drink order in an impatient, distracted manner. She was looking around the room as I was speaking to her. When I began placing my order and requested my steak cooked medium, she rudely interrupted me by saying, "Just a minute," and walked away to speak to another server at the table next to us. She eventually returned to finish taking our orders. Our Caesar salads were good, although they were served warm instead of chilled. My 10-ounce sirloin, ordered medium, was decent but unremarkable. Unfortunately, my husband's and son-in-law's steaks, both also ordered medium, arrived extremely rare and were so undercooked they were difficult to cut. Their baked potatoes were hard and undercooked. My daughter and grandchildren ordered the ravioli, green beans, mushrooms, and macaroni and cheese, which were all bland and best described as merely adequate. My iced tea was never refilled, and our waitress was nowhere to be found throughout most of the meal. The room was so hot and noisy that my daughter and grandchildren eventually left the table because it was a very unpleasant atmosphere. As we were leaving, I stopped at the hostess stand and asked an older woman if she was the manager. She abruptly replied, "One of them." I quietly began explaining our experience so as not to create a scene. Instead of listening, she fixed me with a hostile stare and interrupted me by asking, "Did you tell your waitress about these issues so she could tell me?" I explained that our waitress never returned--not even to refill my tea--so we never had the opportunity to discuss our concerns with her. It was clear from the manager's attitude that the conversation wasn't going to be productive, so I simply told her my husband was still at the table and wanted to speak with her. Ironically, my daughter predicted the manager would treat the men in our party with more courtesy--and she was right. She listened to their concerns and removed one steak and a iced tea from the bill. Between the mediocre food, inattentive service, and unprofessional management, this was an extremely disappointing dining experience. We will not be returning, and I cannot recommend this restaurant read more

From the taxidermy animal decor that makes you feel like you're in a wildlife museum to the unique steak menu offerings, it's a definite go-to when you're in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. I'm not sure I've ever patronized a steakhouse that didn't offer some kind of bread as a free appetizer. I see it's actually listed on the menu for $13. I mean how greedy do you have to be? It's a small thing but it sets the tempo to offer some bread. The service at Gun Barrel moves on the slower side. Food took 30 minutes to reach the table after ordering. I'd say that's a bit tardy for a steakhouse. The decor is exactly what you'd expect and it does a good job of feeling like a hunting club cabin. Wish they'd put a fire in the fireplace though, if it is an actual functioning fireplace. I ordered the ribeye. The steak had good crust, flavor, and seasoning. It was pretty damn tough. I had to revisit the menu and yep these were choice cut steaks. Kind of pricey for choice meat at that. Even the cap of the ribeye was needing to be chewed on repeatedly in order to swallow it. It was tough even by choice standards. It was a shame because the chef knew what he was doing. The temp was right, it was seasoned well, beautiful crust... just a crap steak he had to work with. A quick word on my side of mashed potatoes. They were okay but you get a pathetic amount, maybe about a cup worth. Just another thing that makes this place feel cheap. My date ordered the salmon. It tasted fishy and had no seasoning on it at all. Like zero salt or pepper. The fishy taste was notable, like it was starting to spoil but they cooked it up anyway instead of throwing it out. We had a wonderful experience, our server Christen regularly checked in on us; and gave us time to look at the menu thoroughly in order to make an informed decision. Also, it was so unique. A child brought us our waters and filled our waters. I was so curious but I completely forgot to ask how this kid was hired. He looked super young, but was super responsible and respectful. Also, they come around often to refill your water. I ordered their burger that is 3/4 of a pound of meat. I swapped out the potato wedges for mashed potatoes because I was craving mashed potatoes. I also ordered the truffle mac & cheese because I love anything pasta related. After the meal, we ordered the deep dish apple pie for dessert which was heavenly. The bathrooms are fancy looking, the building has such rich history and it is such a cool experience. It is pricey, but I think if you are in Jackson, you might as well come at least once. They also put little tiny guns in their alcoholic drinks, we didn't order any, but our server was kind enough to give us one. Food arrived 30minutes later...so it was almost an hour between the time we arrived and the time we ate. Once it was delivered she came back to ask within a minute if everything was OK but we hadn't even started to eat it yet so could only say "looks good". Then we didn't see her for another 30mins. One meal was nearly hot but the Elk that I ordered medium rare to medium was practically raw and cold. Not even warm but cold. For almost $70 you'd think it would be properly cooked and served hot. Couldn't say anything because by that time the waitress disappeared. Ribs were decent, salmon seemed crispy like almost fried in oil. I saw them spraying cooking spray on the food in the kitchen so maybe that's what it was. There's a reason this restaurant has available reservations- it is a tourist trap with poor service. If you just want to go to look at the stuffed wildlife, do that and then leave to eat elsewhere. read more

Amazing way to celebrate our last night of vacation! Walking into Gun Barrel Steak and Game House felt like a real Western experience with the log cabin feel and incredible taxidermy animas throughout. I even had to do a walk through of the entire restaurant to take it all in. No appetizers since I knew I'd be too full to eat a complete meal and we were getting on a flight early the next morning. We started off with drinks and I had a Wyoming Manhattan served with a plastic black rifle as my stir stick which I loved. And the drink was good and strong. Dinner: my husband had the Big Sky Ribeye with onion straws and was cooked to perfection (I had several bites!) and I had the bison ribs. Talk about tender! We made a reservation through OpenTable and were seated promptly upon arrival. Our table was outside with one of the most breathtaking views of the Black Diamond ski slopes, making for a beautiful dining atmosphere. Our server, Jorge, was friendly, attentive, and quick throughout the evening. My companion also enjoyed an Old Fashioned--it was well made and satisfying, although not memorable enough to order a second. Unfortunately, the food and service experience quickly went downhill. I ordered "The Grand" Surf & Turf, which was advertised as a 6-ounce Lot 29 prime sirloin with green peppercorn sauce, a 4-ounce lobster tail with drawn butter, and Brussels sprouts. Instead, I was served perfectly cooked, incredibly flavorful Brussels sprouts alongside a massive ribeye--with no lobster tail and no green peppercorn sauce. After taking a few bites, I realized I hadn't received what I ordered. When I pointed it out, Jorge apologized, explained the kitchen had made a mistake, and immediately had a lobster tail prepared, which ended up being excellent. My companion ordered the bison ribs with mashed potatoes. What we overlooked was that the ribs were completely smothered in barbecue sauce. Unfortunately, the sauce tasted more like sweet ketchup than barbecue, completely overpowering the meat and making the dish unenjoyable. The biggest disappointment came when the bill arrived. Rather than simply charging me for the Surf & Turf I originally ordered, they charged me for the full ribeye ($68) plus an additional lobster tail ($24). The entire reason I ordered the Surf & Turf was because it was $69, included both steak and lobster, and I knew I didn't want such a large steak. The additional cost wasn't really the issue--it was the principle. The mistake was entirely the restaurant's, yet we were initially billed for it. To make matters worse, my card had already been charged before I had a chance to review the bill, forcing me to ask for the charges to be corrected. While they did adjust the bill, there was no courtesy discount, no apology from management, and no manager ever came to our table to acknowledge or address the mistakes. For a restaurant with this reputation and price point, I expected much better customer service and recovery when things went wrong. It's unfortunate because we had been looking forward to dining here ever since driving past it on our way to breakfast. The stunning view and Jorge's kindness couldn't make up for the kitchen errors, billing issues, and lack of management response. Sadly, we won't be returning, nor would we recommend Gun Barrel Steak House to friends or family. read more

We are in town for a bachelorette party and had a reservation here for our first night. This place opens at 5 and our reservation was for 5:30- and this place was already poppin'. The service was truly 5 star. Within minutes of ordering drinks, our amazing server Mark brought them to the table. They were strong but flavorful! We were also provided complimentary bread with garlic butter. Appetizer and dinner orders were likewise delivered quickly after ors. The green dried tomatoes in particular were very tasty. Everyone got a different dish but we all ate to excess, the food was so good. I'm vegetarian (pescatarian for this trip) and the salmon was delicious. Everyone loved their meals. I was by myself and got a great table right in front of the BBQ Grill (see my pics), no better seat in the house unless there is one in the kitchen . The I decided on Mixed Game Grill for my entree . Combination of elk steak, bison, prime, rib, and venison bratwurst with the rice with pecans & mushrooms (my choice of sides) it's a great plate to get a whole feel for everything. The Bison Prime Rib was perfectly cooked and very flavorful. The venison sausage was excellent as well. The Elk Steak was a thick Top Sirloin. I ordered it Med-Rare and it came rare in the center. I did not send it back and I'm enjoyed it thoroughly.. I want to. Make a comment about the side dish (Rice with Pecans and Mushrooms) This was excellent. Earthy, and the pecans and mushrooms were tiny but could be detected. It was really good. Definitely worth a try. This place is big, busy, and loud. Not a fancy White linen type of place, but rich is rustic decor. It works with the menu items they are putting up. My server Ramiro, was on it! Always checking with me and making sure everything was good. He offered to take my Elk Steak back but I declined, ended up being a good call. The ambience is warm, rustic and western all around with lots of taxidermy animals and displayed facts about the wildlife. The menu is extensive and there's a variety of mets available. It seems like a tourist destination in Jackson with plenty of taxidermy wild life everywhere making the inside feel like game hunting central. The menu is has plenty of game to pick from as well as a solid beef menu to keep those who don't love game fell at home. We ordered 3 bottles of wine which is fairly priced and has a decent selection on the wine list. Our apps arrived and the Bison carpaccio was delicious as well as the Salmon Ceviche was on point. We also had the fried green tomatoes which everyone enjoyed, but to me the breading was too fried and too crispy. We ordered our entrees and it took a while to get them but that how we got to 3 bottles of wine - perhaps it's part of their game plan. The Ribeye steak was pretty good - just had way too much fat to trim off - loosing about 1/3rd of my steak. We ordered 2 of the Bison Prime Rib entrees - both were ordered Med Rare and both were brought out well done with no pink. We complained about it being overcooked and they went to the kitchen and then returned to tell us that there was no mediums left. So nothing to do but eat it well done. They should've told us they only had well done when we ordered. So not the best experience and embarrassing for me hosting 6 friends visiting from out of town. This place feels more like an Outback Steakhouse than a local place (not even sure if it is a local place or a chain). Service was decent. We've found that servers at most Jackson area restaurants don't come by often to refill drinks--maybe that's why they give you a glass of water when you sit down? Food was OK. If you order the $13 focaccia, be warned that you'll only get 3 pieces. The pieces are rectangular, but when you have a party of 5, cutting those rectangles in half gives everyone a bite of bread. Kiddos' burgers and my chicken was burned/charcoal/dry. I also got a grilled peach salad, and for $18, I was hoping for more than a side salad. Flavor was OK, I think that the arugula was so wilted was because it was mixed with the dressing prior to serving (like a Caesar salad). Hubby got a prime rib that he said was OK. He was a little weirded out by the whitish sweet potato. It was kind of a cross between a regular potato and a sweet potato's texture. There are various stuffed animals throughout the restaurant that look like they're in need of a dusting, but the kids loved the bison by the entrance. The music was a little too loud. We felt like we were yelling to talk to each other. If given the option to return for a second meal here during our stay, I would pass. If you are staying a little outside of Jackson, WY consider stopping into Gun Barrel-especially of you are staying at the Lodge of Jackson (there is an alleyway cut through) or any hotels near by. if it's the weekend make sure to get a reservation! It was packed when I got in and stop people from entering at 9 PM. The restaurant had a cozy, log-cabin aesthetics with log walls, river stone fireplaces, and true to its name it has game busts and outdoorsy photos and decor. My waiter was awesome, coming in to check on me often and gave recommendations on cook and dessert. The food, also true to its name, allows you the opportunity to eat bison, elk, and beef- and not ground into a burger that is seen at most restaurants. With this in mind, I tried the trio of meets in a medium rare (as also was recommended); as I've cooked with both ground elk and bison, I thought I knew what to expect but the tenderloin cut takes the cake. All three pieces were delicious and very tender; I tried to pic a favorite but it was a toss up with every bite. The beef I would say had the most prominent char to the outside, giving it that kinda kick, with Bernese. The venison was the most tender and not gamey at all, though it had a slight flavor difference and an interesting huckleberry sauce. And the bison was somewhere in between (with a brown sauce) and I could see myself wanting even more. If I come again I would just choose one of the meats considering the price, and would probably choose the bison or venison meals considering the rarity of the meat cut. I imagine if you are a little more adventurous than the elk could be a way to go, but the bison- true to their shape- seems a little more closely flavor wise to cow beef. I've been trying huckleberry lemonade around Jackson, so it was a good place to try some more. Compared to some, it is on the sweeter side with less lemon punch. The huckleberry is visible on the bottom which is a plus though. It is good though not my favorite--but it does come with a little gun barrel stirring stick fitting on theme. For dessert I did try the apple pie. It is the kind that has a more mushy applesauce texture on the inside and syrup pooling on the plate. Every once in a while there was a hint of salt as well. It was fine, but maybe after all the heaviness with the meat I should have gone straight to my other choice the ice cream cake. (I saw a few going out and with the huckleberry coloring it looked beautiful and would probably be a freshness to contrast all that meat). If I'm able to come back I plan on getting that one. With the pie comes a scoop of vanilla ice cream-- it had a nice vanilla flavor and smooth texture. Favorite part of the dessert. It is one of the more expensive restaurants in town, but especially if you are adventurous it can been a pretty neat treat! read more

My husband ordered the salmon and loved it as well. We split the wedge and its freshness did not disappoint! I am typically a 2 ounce meat eater but I know I ate at least half and my husband finished my steak. No leftovers. They have a great dessert menu end, but we were too full from dinner. My first time visiting Wyoming and got to try Gun Barrel since hubby recommended as he tried the place before and had good compliments. The first round of food came out great which was stuffed mushrooms and filet flights. Meat is good and juicy. For the entrees, we ordered steak Diane and big sky ribeye medium rare for both. The food was a disappointment for both entrees. The steak Diane is cooked medium rare but the outside is way too charred to the point it gets bitter even though i scraped off the burned parts. The ribeye is cooked medium not medium rare as we wanted and the meat gets hard and very hard to chew. Our server came to us for the first time to check on us when we just got our food and we complained to him about the too burned steak. He then explained because of the wood grill and here and there and offered to give us discount on that burned steak. After that he never got back and checked on us until he cleared the table. We ended didn't finish the ribeye since it's too hard and chewy and we're just over it. Btw, the huckleberry ice cream is bomb. So far the experience is ok.
