This is my new favorite donut shop! I had to go dairy and soy free because of my babies allergies, and was really bummed about having to cut those out of my diet. I have a major sweet tooth and was elated to discover Gurus vegan donuts. You would never know that the donuts are vegan. The buttercream is amazing and tastes like the real deal. The menu changes frequently and I love trying all the new flavors. The strawberry shortcake looked like the popsicle you used to order at lunch in elementary school so I was stoked. When I last visited, I asked for a recommendation and was told I should try the "Berry Summer Macaron" donut. It was perfection! Guru Donuts has two locations, one in Boise and one in Eagle. I'm more of a savory than sweets girl, so until I won my Yelp award and was treated to three free ones, I had never visited. I had tried them once before though when someone brought a box to work. I like donuts, but like most things, I think my standard for them is pretty high. I once unintentionally visited three donut shops in Tacoma in one day: Legendary. Original House of Donuts and Top Pot. While it was interesting to learn about the history of those donut shops and the rivalry between them, part of which resulted in the spin off of Top Pot, I returned to Boise and visited DK's, which confirmed it's superiority. My preference is for cake donuts. The majority of Guru donuts are not. They also have quite a few vegan donuts. They also have one made from potato flour that is gluten friendly. For a long time, their location and hours made it challenging for me to access. The combination of those three things is why it is taking me so long to check them out. When it comes to donuts, I am a bit of a traditionalist. I will consider more fancy donuts, but I want to start with the basics to see how they measure up, and go from there. I got a maple bar, a chocolate cake donut and Guru's signature Hipster Berry vegan donut. All three donuts looked beautiful. Both yeast donuts had a noticeable yeast flavor and an almost chewy-like texture. The cake donut was a bit dry. All three frostings were good. This box of donuts cost $10+. Located on the corner of 10th and Main Street in downtown Boise, Guru takes pride in hand-making all of their donuts from scratch every morning. They source their ingredients from local purveyors. I went in at around 1pm last Saturday. There were only 15 flavors to choose from. Vegan and gluten-free options were available. I ordered three donuts: 1. Hipsterberry ($2.50) - blueberries, blackberries, and organic lavender (bestseller according to the staff) 2. Chocolate sprinkle ($2.25) - chocolate cake donut glazed with chocolate and topped with natural carnival sprinkles 3. PB&J ($2.75) - vegan-raised ring topped with a peanut butter glaze, drizzled with grape jelly and topped with crunchy peanuts I loved all three! I'm a sucker for anything classic and so the chocolate sprinkle was a hit. All three donuts were dense. Not fluffy. Not airy. But heavy. Not sugary which I really liked. They were a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. There was no line when I came in and so I can't comment on whether or not social distancing is strictly enforced. In terms of indoor seating, there were four circular tables that could each seat four people, and a couch. Solid service. The lady and the gentleman behind the counter were courteous and friendly. Minimal talking because of COVID but I could tell that they loved their job and took pride in Guru Donuts and what the business stands for (their website says this, "The Guru Story is one of true grit, heart-centered service, and willingness to risk everything to go after your dreams"). read more

Today we got donuts for my birthday! Guru donuts is a really cute shop. Upon walking in, the staff was friendly and attentive. We weren't sure what we wanted so we just asked them to put together a box for us. What they brought us was some absolutely fantastic donuts! It's a pretty "hip" spot and definitely clean. They are taking good COVID measures! The donuts are delicious but the coffee has a little bit of a soy sauce taste. It is just over roasted - which is probably due to the quality and time of the actual roast from where they source their coffee and not so much the brewing process. All in all, pretty good! I really don't understand why everyones loves this place so much. It's a glorified, try-hard hipster cafe that centers their focus more on how the product looks rather than tastes. I've tried it several times thinking my next experience will be better than the last. It never is. The donuts are dry and don't taste special in any way. While I do appreciate their vegan options, I have had better. My experience went further downhill when I placed a pick up order and upon entering the store was ignored. When I finally got someone's attention she had the audacity to tell me I had to wait in line - for a pick up order that I already paid for! All you had to do was quickly grab it and I could be on my way but instead you're saying I have to wait 10+ minutes to pick up an order that was ready 25 minutes ago? Absurd. Isn't the purpose of order online for pick up for me to save time? Well that didn't happen. Thank goodness Boise offers other donut shops. Inside out: parking can be a little difficult with this place unless you pay. That being said the building can't be beat, it's beautiful inside and out and it's a lovely place to get a cup of coffee and watch people walk by. My only complaint about the display is that you have to ask for every doughnut instead of having a description on it. I realize maybe not everyone could read the description but it would save everyone asking every time which makes the line slow. Food: I have never had a bad donut there, and if you're looking for a experience it's worth the extra price. That being said they aren't the best donuts I've ever had in my life, but they're definitely in the top three. They have a constantly changing selection but the hipsterberry seems fairly consistent, and is delicious. I never like to leave a bad review but, these were just no good, and at $10 for 3 donuts, I can't not say something. I got there around 10am and the selection was limited, but I was still excited about my selection. A classic glazed, a chocolate chocolate, and a salted chocolate. Maybe I accidentally bought vegan donuts without realizing it, but I didn't see a sign anywhere, and the cashier didn't say anything. The biggest issue is the dough, which is pretty much the whole point. It had an OK texture but it was just flavorless. It's almost hard to describe but it was just not good. The chocolate one had a really bad consistency and texture. The salted one at least added a little flavor to the bite, but I couldn't even finish that one. I don't know if my experience was a fluke since there are so many positive reviews, but I definitely would not return, and now I have 3 basically untouched donuts. They have all their donut varieties on display in a case. These are some pretty large donuts. I always get 2. Why? Because I can. I ordered the Tiramisu and an apple fritter. I was saving these for the next morning. I ate the Tiramisu first. This one was pretty good. Not sure I tasted any tiramisu flavors. The base of the donut was a typical texture. Tasted good. The apple fritter, unfortunately, was a disappointment for me. This isn't your typical fritter you would find and any regular donut shop. Something seemed off about the flavor. Cool vibe, pretty product, good coffee! However I wasn't hugely impressed by these donuts. They were .... wait for it ... too sweet for me! I know that's kindof an oxymoron but wow! My son and I went in for a sample - he's 9 so he can eat 4 donuts in a sitting if I let him - and between the 2 of us, we barely finished the equivalent of 1 of the 3 we shared. The old fashioned glazed was cloyingly sweet, the lemon blueberry was simply the old fashioned glazed with a lemon glazed frosting and purple swizzle on top. I was surprised by that. While the lemon brought the sweetness down a bit, there was zero zest or pop. Our favorite was the chocolate old fashioned. It was like a brownie. The texture was good on the donuts. Really disappointing that donuts that LOOK so good don't taste like anything at all. The "Summer Fling" is beautiful, but all the promised ginger and blood orange flavor was not present: it just tasted sweet. Similarly, their famous "Hipsterberry" didn't taste like anything either. Their "Maple Bar" and "Dark Chocolate Sea Salt" both suffered from being too thick. I could barely fit it into my mouth. I also didn't like how dense the base donut was. It was almost like eating bread, and there seemed to be something off about that. I appreciated that the dough was fresh and fried in fresh oil too so there wasn't a gross oily after taste, but why was it so chewy? I didn't love that. We did enjoy the "Vanilla Iced Potato Donut", because it was actually soft, fluffy, and had an interesting flavor. The "Drumstick" was good too, but mostly because the peanuts compensated for a lackluster base. I think I'd rather just buy a drumstick from 7/11 at a third of the price and double the yumminess. About the only good thing I can say about my experience was that the staff is really cool. They're personable and on top of it being Happy Hour (buy one get one free) he gave us a couple free donuts too. Also, the vibe inside the shop is really chill so it's definitely a place I'd hang out. Guru rocks. I had the amazing privilege of being one of the first Boiseans to sample their wares. It was a First Thursday many eons ago. I'm delighted to see them move out of the basement and into the sun! Guru has wonderful donut options. Some eclectic, some normal, all delicious. They even offer several vegan options!
