Guru has different donut styles and flavors with vegan, GF, and "regular" options (no vegan AND GF though). I thought it was cool that they make fried GF donuts (not from Boise so I don't know what the situation is here, but every donut shop I've visited elsewhere with GF options only had baked). I tried a GF hipsterberry donut (fried donut with lavender huckleberry glaze). I really liked the texture - maybe fluffy isn't the right word exactly, but it had a consistency very similar to non-GF cake donuts with just a slightly different feel. Not dense but not too airy either. The name is kind of silly but the glaze was really delicious! Great atmosphere in an interesting building with lots of seating and good music. The person working was very friendly. It was a very enjoyable quick morning snack stop.

Visiting some family in town and they brought us to Guru Donuts because it's one of their favorite spots and I can definitely see why! I love all the vegan and gluten free options and they seem to be very allergen-friendly. The donuts were all delicious, I tried bites of the old fashioned and the coffee cake crumble and they were both amazing. I ordered the avocado toast, and it may look simple but the flavors were surprisingly complex. The addition of the garlic oil with the shaved Parmesan made the toast so flavorful and I know this is going to have me craving this all the time! There's plenty of comfort seating to pick from with lots of open space and extremely tasteful decor that makes for a fun, cozy atmosphere.

Delicious donuts! They had a wide variety of vegan donuts to choose from! I got 1 to eat in the shop with hot tea, took 2 for later. Comfortable seating area! Staff was helpful in choosing what to get!

Yum! Guru is a downtown Boise staple! I've been going since they were located on Capitol Street. Their new location in the Idanha bon Main Street is more spacious. My go to is the hipsterberry. My husband loves the Boston cream pie. The donuts always have incredible texture and flavor! Of note, they avoid artificial ingredients. Looks like they've changed ownership a few times, but thankfully I haven't noticed a difference in quality. Currently, their hours are 7 AM to 4 PM on weekdays and 8 AM to 4 PM on weekends

Been here a few years back, I noticed the inside changed a bit as well as the menu. Still pretty good, I had the Alice in wonderland donut and a sandwich. Service was amazing, it was our friends birthdays and they let us bring balloons and gifts inside for her! She loved it!!! The vibe is chill, casual and quaint!

Really wish I could give 2.5 stars, because I have some Jekyll and Hyde feeling on Guru. The good. If you have allergies. There is no better place for donuts. I appreciate their efforts here and I suspect it's a top reason many choose to come here. Additionally, the staff is willing to ensure cross contamination is not an issue via new gloves, new sheet, clean boxes, etc. And the donuts themselves are very good. This place is really good for those that want a donut without risking anaphylactic issues. The bad. Starting with "to go" donuts, they stack the donuts. I acknowledge there is no way to ensure donuts don't touch (and this is not about the allergies, they will definitely put those in separate boxes), but some of their donuts have juicy or otherwise easily transferred toppings. Although delicious, especially if you like that flavor, they become inedible if you don't. Another inconvenience is the bathroom. It's not in the restaurant, rather, it is down some stairs, down a hall, and you must remember to get the key (not the most welcoming walk). Finally, parking. It's not great. There's paid parking in a few areas, but not always convenient. In the end, Guru is solid, and I would recommend it. But I'd also recommend targeting your visit when you are on foot in town, when you have time to eat there, and preferably find a restroom in advance.

Guru donuts is always consistent. Always fresh in the morning with lots of choices. The breakfast burrito is delicious. Ordered avocado toast for takeout, and they gave me a breakfast sandwich instead. Didn't realize it till I got home. Was delish though.

**Guru Donuts ** in downtown Boise is a treat to behold. You walk in and the vibe is cool. There are so many places to sit and relax and lots to look at. There is complementary water with cups to have with your doughnuts. A cool mural sits on the wall, there are seats to look out on the street and plenty of room for a crowd. The unassuming building on Main Street houses a business who's motto is " both food & life should be fun." Eating donuts here at Guru is fun experience. They open at 7 on weekdays and 8 on weekends. I tell you this because I didn't give it much thought till I arrived 2pm and donuts were scarce. For the best choice in doughnuts go early! Regardless, lucky me , my fav Boston Crème were still available. This donut was ooey gooey and had the perfect chocolate topping. The filling is the best Boston Creme filling I have had anywhere! We also tried the cup of donut holes that are the essential and tasty on the go treat. So good, light & fluffy. Another good one is the High Priest. A bacon topped glazed donut that not only looks good but is tasty. That bacon trend was from years back but the salty and sweet still works so well. Of course there is coffee. The day was too hot for that for me. There were breakfast type things to eat but it was afternoon. So, for us it was The donuts! Just go here!

I ordered The Sandwich which includes bacon, eggs, white cheddar, onions, and more. The decor is modern and hip. The two workers were the sweetest. The sandwich was $10, seemed like a great deal to me, also seemed to be fresh. There is also a vegan option. I have the menu pictured in one of my photos. There is ample seating available on a weekday, comfortable chairs, good wifi network.

I dot get what kind of donut shop opens so late in the morning? Went there and bought a couple donuts to share with my family, me and my two children got sick after eating it. And honestly, it wasn't even good. It tasted weird, I tried another another donut I bought and that just tasted bland, I don't see the hype in this at all. Would not recommend. read more

It's not cute enough to be Instagram worthy and not tasty enough to be worth the calories. Hard pass. Donut was dry and lacked flavor like a grocery store donut. Flavors tried to be creative but missed the mark. Could't even nail a simple maple bar let alone a donut with what tasted like was filled with unsweetened canned sweet potato purée. The atmosphere is very cute and good for photos! Staff is very pleasant and welcoming. Donuts are kinda sad, they look pretty good but just aren't it. The chocolate sprinkle is low key nasty and the funfetti is ok but just not the best. For the coffee I am not sure it looks pretty good but didn't have it. Overall would not recommend. read more

Decided to give Guru a shot after we heard that new owners had taken over. The only positive change at Guru is that the ordering process is less ridiculously drawn out and comically inefficient. Unfortunately, the donuts still taste like crap. I can't fathom how, in the many years this shop has been in business, the owners, old and new, have not been able to (or maybe have just not cared to) figure out why the hell the dough in their doughnuts is so disgusting. Sadly, new ownership does not = improved donuts. They still have an awful chemical/aerosol taste to them. Kinda like cheap cake from a grocery store. Ordered 4 donuts. All of them tasted like crap. We each took one bit of each donut and left, never to return. This was the final of too many chances we've given Guru Donuts. Good riddance, we will not miss your donuts. Ever. read more

Do yourself a favor and get your breakfast or brunch here! We ate here twice while visiting from Michigan and oh how I wish I could take this whole shop home with me. This is the first time I've had a donut with my breakfast and didn't feel a crash afterwards. Their clean ingredients make ALL the difference. This donut shop was just OK. Donuts are prices from $1.50-2.50. They range from plain to glazed to chocolate and to the fancier vegan or flavors. I got a Wildberry Lavender, mocha chocolate and a strawberry glazed. The fruit ones were nice and doughy and the toppings were pretty good. The mocha is a chocolate cake donut with a java frosting, it was mediocre. For the price and the hype I was expecting more flavors and really novel toppings and a bigger selection. I went back and got the maple bacon bar and the Irish whiskey donut. The bacon has a much needed savory element. The Irish whiskey donut was pretty good but really sweet. read more

I'm copying my Google review. Their donuts are good--not my favorite, but they are definitely good. *Cough* bring back the Bart Simpson *cough*. Anyway, here is why I say five stars. My daughter has celiac. I went in today to get her a donut along with traditional donuts. The smart person behind the counter did something many places have not done, which was to ask me if I needed the gluten-free donut separated. I was totally in a hurry and forgot to ask. I don't think the employee understands how thoughtful that was and I appreciate it. It sounds like a small gesture, but to someone with Celiac--it's not! If Guru management/owners read these reviews, whoever was working today around 11am is awesome and very friendly. I would be mindful of the fact that she might get poached from another business one day as she clearly takes pride in her job. read more

I love to try local donut shops when I travel and so when I was visiting Boise last weekend I checked Yelp to find a good place to go. My fellow Yelpers never let me down, because of them my daughter and I tried the amazing Guru Donuts!! My daughter sticks to her tried and true chocolate sprinkle donut wherever we go, and I can't argue with wanting to stay with the classics. Guru's was delicious! We also got a Wildberry Lavender, which is glazed raised donut with blueberries, blackberries and lavender. Heavenly. Could I just have a vat of that glaze please??!! The donut I always get wherever we go is the old fashioned, it is my all time favorite. Guru has an AMAZING one. It is glazed with cinnamon liqueur and sprinkled with 24k gold flakes!!! I am probably ruined for life on all old fashions now, because that glaze just MADE it. It was so so good. read more

I'm so glad I finally had a chance to go into this place. I've passed it dozens of times in the past year and always thought it was some little hole in the wall donut shop. I was absolutely amazed at how big and welcoming it felt when I went inside. I went with a large group of people and everyone had something different and everyone was beyond satisfied. The donuts were sweet and delicious, even the vegan one :-) and the service was quick and friendly. Atmosphere in here was warm with plenty of room and a great place to sit at a window and people watch. read more

If you are covid conscious stay away. Only 1 employee was wearing a mask. The donut tray is two feet from everyone coming in and standing in line without a mask. No social distancing or masks even recommended at the store. I was very disappointed in the lack of effort to slow the spread in Boise. read more

Located in an old historic building, Guru Donuts is a newer hipster dive that hits the spot! We tried one of their plain glazed donuts, and one of their popular purple berry-flavored donuts. I don't remember exactly what it was called. You need to get a key to use the restroom, and it is located downstairs in this old building. The place has a very chill vibe, with stickers and flags that indicate a welcoming atmosphere. read more

This place is super uber popular. Got here near closing which is like 4PM and there were only like 3 types of donuts left which was disappointing but I guess kind of expected. Pretty good donuts. Not the best I've ever had but pretty good. I had the strawberry shortcake, not sure it's $3.75 good, but overall decent. We got four donuts. They were all very good. I think Guru will do really well. We have a donut place where we live that is similar to Guru which is what we compared it to and Guru's didn't measure up to our expectations unfortunately. But still if ever in downtown Boise again, I would come back and order a coffee for sure. read more

You know, I'm pretty upset. I'm upset because I tasted the best donuts I've ever had, and I live so far away from them that I do not know when I will have another. I dream about my experience here to this day.. My husband and I embarked on our honeymoon roadtrip to Las Vegas, and stopped in downtown Boise for breakfast around 6:00 AM. We ate down the street, and I wanted to grab something for the drive (one day earlier I had just placed in my first bodybuilding competition and after weeks of brutal dieting, I was dreaming of donuts). We walked to Guru Donuts, and I saw the great reviews they got on here. We walked in, and it was dimly lit. The smell was so wonderful. Donuts and fresh coffee. Heaven?? Definitely. We picked a couple standard donuts, and then a Fluffernutter for good measure. They were all perfect. I am so happy to have finally tasted a REAL donut, where the dough is not overly sweet but the icing is... so much yes. I have yet to try a donut as delicious. Not only are the donuts great, but the coffee was phenomenal (even just a boring ole drip) and the people working were incredibly friendly. I cannot wait to have another excuse to end up in Boise just so I can eat more Guru. read more

Guru Donuts is exceptional! I visit Guru every other week, wishing it was every day instead :) Fantastic staff - friendly, helpful, able to answer all my questions (yup, allergy fam), super sweet to my donut enthusiast kiddos. (super excited singsong voice) *AMAZZZZINGGGG* donuts! These aren't those supermarket or chain store donuts that will sugar bomb you. These are superb delights - pretty much the most magical donuts I've ever had. Been to a lot of those tourist hot spot donut shops etc and Guru blows them out of the water :) Every month they unveil amazing new flavor combos so there's always the option to try a new delicious donut... or TWO. We love The Great Pretender (outstanding maple bar with coconut-bacon), the Peanut Buddah Mocha (so rich and delicious: peanut butter, chocolate, coffee... how can you go wrong?), and the Dark Chocolate bar with sea salt... They've also done a BANANA SPLIT DONUT that I can hardly wait til they bring back next year (it was heavenly!). They also post updates on Facebook so if you follow them you can see when they post HAPPY HOUR. That's right, sometimes they post all their donuts half price, til they are sold out. Also nice to know when they are sold out ahead of closing ;) Eco-conscious, book enthusiasts (Tuesday morning donuts and reading to kiddos lately!), community specials (special theme donuts & funds go to love our community? YES!), and vegan options that make my heart smile. I bet you can tell I'm head over heels for this place :) Go get some donuts! read more

Guru donuts is a great little shop. It is very similar to voodoo donuts in Portland. The staff are friendly, quick at making coffee and ready to give suggestions. There is a seating area to enjoy to cool, old building. I would recommend to anyone in town or visitors. They do offer gluten free and and will do custom orders. read more

I LOVE donuts and I try to hit up the best shops every time I travel. I Googled the "best donuts in Boise" and Guru donuts was first on the list. We went there at about 11:30 am and there were just a few people. I came up to the counter and was greeted right away. I told them it was my first time and the lady explained their donuts and the different flavors they had available. I bought a dozen donuts and got 10% off. The donuts were DELICIOUS!! The flavors and names were fun, original, and matched well together! The dough has a fantastic texture - thick but light and wasn't bland. The fresh fruit on some donuts were great. Each bite was filled with flavor! The only downside were the cake donuts... I got 3 cake donuts and they greatly lacked in flavor... it was good as long as there was icing or chocolate with it... but when you eat it alone, it was very bland. I'll ignore the cake donuts and give these guys a 5/5! Fantastic donuts!! :D read more

Great selection of donuts with a ton of creative varieties, ranging from simple glazed to boston cream, green tea, blood orange, and more depending on the season. Large selection of coffee and drinks as well. Their daily happy hour from 3-4pm has buy one get one free on all donuts, making it the most popular time of day-be sure to get there at the start before they sell out! I only have one issue with the store, and it has nothing to do with the quality of the donuts: they don't have bags. Donut boxes are available in multiple sizes but bags for carrying them are nowhere to be found, making transport difficult if you don't have a car or even if you just have to walk a bit. Seriously, I don't understand how any place that sells food doesn't have bags. It's a very easy problem to fix, and it's one that I hope is taken care of soon. Other than that, this place is great. Highly recommend! read more

Guru donuts has Tasty Tales on Tuesdays at 10:00 and 10:30 AM courtesy of Rediscovered books. There are coffee and donut specials and the kids get to enjoy fun stories while the adults can have a mini break. It's a nice excuse to eat donuts, drink coffee and chat with other parents. Indigo loves story time and highly recommends it. read more

You've got the right idea Guru: find a hip urban space downtown with exposed brick and dream up some outrageous donut flavors like "hipsterberry" (yes that is a real flavor). What you are still missing is that cool factor, that vibe, that makes it permissible to wait in line for nearly an hour to get a round piece of fried dough with some frosting. Perhaps it will just take Boise time to grow this culture around food appreciation, or perhaps you could help your recipes a bit to get that wow factor. Poppyseed lemon holds no mystery for me. Enchant me with some old dirty bastard and make me question what exactly you have put on my pastry. read more

I know this place has a local cult following. I know. And it IS, cute and clean and friendly and it has that happy hour. But that apple fritter friends. Uh uh. Dry, sad, lonely. Crying out for butter, more apples, more cinnamony goodness. The other donuts were good. But just good, not spectacular. It is an independent and we chatted with an employee who spoke highly of his employer and job. So, we'd go back but we'll bring some butter. read more

History

Established in 2013.

Guru Donuts started out of a garage in Boise's North end in 2012 - starting with "Donut Speakeasies" to test the artisan donuts among friends and neighbors. After two seasons at the Boise Farmer's Market and wholesaling to downtown coffee shops and retail outlets, Guru Donuts found it's first (temporary) home in the Adelmann Building (204 N Capitol Blvd). After less than a year an incredible opportunity came up to setup long-term roots in Boise's iconic Idanha Building at 10th and Main. After a couple years of perfecting core recipes and serving Boise faithfully, in 2019 Guru Donuts began expanding to offer more donut types (potato, gluten-friendly, vegan), food, beer, wine and grow to build the mission of bringing the community together one donut at a time.

I'm happy that I got to experience the hype of the apple fritter that everyone had raved about! Believe the hype! The apple fritters here were money. If I could do half stars, this visit would have been 4.5 but it's going to be a 4. My first initial interaction with the first gal wasn't the best. You deal with a ton of different people everyday, how was I to know you knew what I was there for if you don't say anything to me? For my main, I ordered the TNT Sando (Tri-Tip with bacon jam and garlic aioli) on Gaston's grilled focaccia. I requested it without pickles, and it was excellent. I paired it with the Black Bean and Veggie soup, which was a standout--perfectly delicious with a nice "zing" to it. Unfortunately, the meal hit a significant snag with my fiancé's Fish & Chips. The beer and cornmeal tempura batter was extremely thick (nearly 3/4 of an inch in some spots) and the fish was overcooked. Additionally, the blue cheese dressing on his side salad was very runny and tasted off. It was disappointing enough that we had to send it back. We replaced it with The Spicy Italian pizza. This was a total 180--it arrived looking beautiful, and the combination of the meats, pepperoncinis, and hot honey was absolutely delicious. Our server, Casey P., was generally good and attentive, though we did have to wait to start our meal because we weren't initially provided with napkins or silverware. A minor note on the atmosphere: the table we were seated at had "gay" carved into the wood, which felt a bit out of place for the professional vibe of the rest of the establishment. Overall, the TNT Sando, the pizza, and the beers are worth coming back for, but the kitchen consistency on the fried items definitely needs some work.

Apple fritters are his favorite so I Googled the nearest joint that has apple fritters Goldy's Corner popped up so I made my 2 minute drive there. For a sunny Monday morning, downtown was pretty chill. Got myself a front row parking spot and made my way in. The vibe in the joint was just the same as this Monday morning, chill. You see a few guests enjoying their morning caffeine with some friends. Another guest having his chess board all ready for a serious game while sipping on his drink. I love it. The display case was full of goods. You have a great variety of savory and sweet options. I did a run through of everything and the one thing I came in for wasn't there. The sweet gal behind the counter greeted me with the friendliest smile. I asked her about the apple fritters and she nicely told me they didn't have any today. Last week, last week they had the fritters. So, I got my husband his second favorite thing and that is a huge cinnamon roll. It was beautifully displayed in the case. It was perfectly frosted and hearty. It looked like the perfect pastry to grab for him. I got my cinnamon roll all boxed up and was excited to bring it home to the hubby. The sweet gal told me to call ahead next time to see if they were planning on having fritters available that day. I also appreciate that she tried to direct me to other joints to grab a fritter. I told her that I have been to the shops she recommended but I was happy with the cinnamon roll. I look forward to taking my huge bite of this cinnamon roll when I get home. I am positive my husband will love it, he's never had a locally made cinnamon roll that he didn't like. The shop was really chill and relaxing. The gal that worked today was sweet and kind. I can't wait to come back and vibe out here. I can see the patio and a cup of coffee in the near future.

We enjoyed our coffee with unlimited refills and took a booth where you can people watch and we could see the capitol building. Friendly staff and good coffee. I appreciate the variety of baked goods and even the discounted day old items. Good place to grab a coffee when you don't have much time. Loved the artwork on display too. Several little tables here and booths and one larger table. My quiche was good. Everything I expected and I got the day old banana bread which was dried up and hard on the edges and soft in the middle. I guess that's why they discount it. After a day it doesn't hold up too long.

I was so excited to find out that guru has a selection of vegan donuts! I hadn't had store-made donuts in years because of a dairy intolerance so I went there to check it out. It happened to be my birthday so they gave me a free donut! We got a couple of flavors to share and they were all delicious-airy and light, just the way they should be. The guy behind the counter was super friendly and nice too. The whole experience was wonderful and made this birthday girl very happy! I've been enjoying delicious donuts from Guru before their move. I'm happy that they were able to find a downtown location that better suits their growth because they do an amazing job. The Java the Hut donut is sooooo good. Sometimes there is a line and often times people become so hypnotized by the array of treats that they take forever to order so be prepared to wait but it's totally worth it! read more

I'm a big donut connoisseur. In Boise, you can't get much better than this. Great quality, nice variety at a solid price. My go to stop when I'm craving a bacon maple bar. I guess You'd say I'm grateful for their location with later hours. Highly recommend. read more
