My Galaxy Note Ultra 20's screen suddenly went black and wouldn't turn on on my flight back to LGA. I was getting work related calls, texts and emails that I couldn't answer. I found Guru Repairs on Yelp and decided to give them a try because Samsung Care didn't have any appointments for a week. Michael diagnosed the problem with my 2010 iMac and told me what parts he would need to order. He also said that if he was unable to fix it, I wouldn't be charged anything. Long story short, after ordering multiple parts and trying to fix it, Michael said that the problem would actually require a different part which would be just as expensive as a new computer. iPhone XS screen repair: For a little background, after calling my phone provider, phone insurance company (cough* asurion cough*), and three other stores - I was at the point that I was just about to get a new phone. Phone provider is currently going through a merger and couldn't fix my phone for two months (even though I have their insurance). Asurion told me to file a claim which would inevitably lead to a $275 deductible and a replacement phone. Other companies told me the price would be from $250-280 including a 4-6 hour repair time. I finally found Guru Repair and I couldn't be happier. I brought my phone in same day and it literally took 25 minutes. Michael was extremely knowledgeable and even provided screen options to lower the cost. I ended up getting the factory screen and paid for a screen protector. Total price came to $173.00. Please note this was for the more expensive screen and the screen protector. After the repair, Michael advised all repairs come with a 3 month warranty - no bs, he will just fix it. Loved the service, turnaround time, and the fact he gave options instead of gouging the price. I highly recommend this place if you are in the area. Found a local iPhone repair location in my area today. My daughter trashed her iPhone 6s screen in school and I was initially intending to go to the place near my Mom's place in Ridgewood/Glendale NY, but decided to check on Yelp! this morning since I was heading down to Chinatown in Manhattan if there was some place local. This shop is located within another store in the front of the store. The owner, Michael, was knowledgeable and spoke very frank and honestly about my situation. He checked the iPhone 6s and in our discussion said he would price match over the phone. After checking it out he mentioned a few points about my daughter's iPhone. He would replace the screen with a very good third party screen. He would transfer the camera, Home button and metal structural frame all over. However he noticed through the broken screen that the iPhone probably was receiving responses on its own and that the iPhone was locked and after the screen replacement that we wouldn't be able to recover the data and it would require a Wipe before we could use it. He said he could do it for me, or we could do it at home ourselves and that it would be easy. Eventually I just had him do it. He uses good screen which have good brightness, color and responsive to your taps. However my daughter was complaining right away when I brought it home and gave it to her. I watched her use it a few taps and she turned away from me complaining it didn't respond to her taps like it should. Of course the owner kindly left the protective film on top and I immediately informed her that she was tapping on the protective film and as soon as she removed it she had the look of shame that you can imagine when someone realizes they made a mistake. Have to say the price that is quoted for a screen repair is about half the price of one offered by Apple for iPhones not under warranty. I am in the IT field in the past and do repairs myself still once in awhile. My professional opinion is that he's one of the honest ones out there who takes pride in his work, knowledge and training. If he's a little more costly than someone you've gotten a quote for - say saving you $10 is not in your best interest and you should have him do your repair. If you have questions you'll get a down to earth response and I'm sure he'll explain it clearly enough for you to understand. I'm not sure about his other prices, but I suspect he'll be on par with others and he uses better than average replacement parts because he wants you to walk away satisfied and not return with an issue with your repair. One thing you should know is that he is frank and honest with your assessment. I was there when another user brought in a Kindle for a screen repair. I've done one myself and know what he suggested to the client was the best honest answer I've heard in a long while. He told the client that the cost of a screen replacement would be $95. That he should see if they would warranty replace it if he had warranty still. If not just buy a new one as it would be more cost effective. I've listened to too many who just charge the client to repair it. A breath of fresh air that you don't always find in a tech repair shop now a days. read more

I had an AWFUL experience with this place. Brought my son's iphone in to determine if it was repairable being that the front and back glass was smashed. He held onto it for about 30 minutes to take it apart for inspection. Before he took it, he advised me that there is a chance that the camera would not work. After inspection, he concluded that it could not be fixed because the motherboard was beyond repair and wasn't worth the fix. I respected his honesty and took it to Apple a week later to see what my options are. Upon first glance at the phone, they noticed the camera was missing. They told me the camera would've been worth some money even if the phone was irreparable. To my surprise I couldn't believe Guru Repairs had taken my phone's camera as I hadn't opened the box which I kept the phone in since then. I took it back to Guru store to ask about the missing camera, his initial reaction was that he denied taking the camera, then went to the back to see if there was any camera around and offered to purchase a camera for this phone which he said was $8 (I looked it up and it's about $50-$70). I decided this whole situation was not worth my time being that I was never going to see this camera again nor get this phone fixed. I went to this store due to the many great reviews but I was SO wrong and learned a valuable lesson. I will never return again and feel pretty stupid that perhaps I could sell the parts of this phone on my own but now I cannot. I write this review to leave as a warning for those who intend to come in with an item beyond repair, he may or may not take some parts without your knowledge! EDIT: Are you seriously blaming Apple for taking the phone camera? Phone never left my sight at Apple but it was left with you twice as you took it to your back room (1st time for 30 mins, 2nd time 10 mins). And while I came him to to hook me up with windows he not only did that, hooked up all my programming all my drives made the wiring manageable to look at. I feel conflicted writing this review. The man who ran the repair shop seemed so nice and honest and he was much cheaper than the store across the street - ubreakifix. The thing is, he unfortunately wasn't very honest - lies of omission are still lies. It's unfortunate because he told me "I am not in the business of taking advantage of people" while quoting me a cheaper price and I believe him. He was very fast (he replaced my screen in a half hour). I appreciated him so much that I even went to the bank to take out the money I was going to pay him so that he wouldn't be charged a credit card transaction fee. On top of that, I even gave him an extra $5. However, I don't appreciate lies (straight up lies or lies by omission). I heard him tell another customer that he uses top quality materials for his replacements. He told me that the reason that ubreakifix was charging me more for my screen was that they are a franchise and have no control over their prices. The phone screen I had him replace was an iPhone X. This is the first screen in the iPhone line to use an OLED screen instead of a LCD screen. If given the choice, I likely would have chosen to replace it with an LCD screen since it is cheaper. But when you go in for a repair, unless you are told otherwise or given a choice, it is standard to believe that your product is being replaced with a near identical product (different brand but essentially a copycat). I went home later this evening and ran a test to see if my replacement screen was indeed OLED or LCD. I turned out the lights and used a photo of a black screen. If the screen is OLED, it is capable of producing true black with no backlight, even if the brightness is all the way up. The backlight on my phone was loud and clear. I even compared it with a spare iPhone XS I had to be sure. Yes, given the choice I likely would have chosen the cheaper LCD screen, but I should have been given that choice and been informed of what I was receiving. I was ready to come to this guy for all future repairs but now I am afraid of what inferior products he would replace my items with in the future. I understand the "smart consumer" thing to do would have been to ask specifically what product I was getting, but I also believe a good and honest businessperson would inform you of exactly what you're receiving without needing to be asked, especially for someone who only learned the iPhone X natively has a different type of screen minutes prior to the interaction (which I had told him). EDIT: I just called Ubreakifix and confirmed that their higher price is because they would have replaced my iPhone X screen with an OLED screen. The owner of this shop has replied to this review and said he is honest with all of his customers, but hasn't addressed the fact that he didn't say his lower price was because he was giving me an inferior product. read more

Went in to get my Iphone X screen repaired. The guy was very polite and welcoming. He saw my phone and asked if it was an original screen as it seemed pretty good quality. I said no, AT&T fixed it for me. He said his screens were just as good as well. I said great. He asked me if I wanted after market ($125) or original ($199). I said after market, thinking it would be the same quality as the AT&T screen that I currently had. The AT&T one, face ID did not work so I assumed it was considered the same quality as after market. Went back 20 minutes later, and received my phone with his new screen. Again he was very nice. When I got home, I saw that the color of the screen was discolored, and the resolution seemed lower to my eye (this is just personal to my eyes, some people might not even be able to tell the difference). There was no mention of the screen discoloring prior to the fix, so of course I was upset. If he had mentioned that his aftermarket screens, the color wouldn't be the same, or the aftermarket one would be different than the AT&T screen I have now, I would've thought about it more and asked more questions. Of course I wasn't expecting it to be the same quality as apple especially for $125, but I was expecting it to be the similar to the one I had prior or just a heads up about the difference. I was under the impression that this new one was going to have OLED screen, which apparently the AT&T screen had. When I gave him a call, he explained that the screen discoloring would be due to it being an LED screen and to give it time for my eyes to get adjusted. He did enable true tone for me, but it didn't seem much of a difference for me personally. He reinstalled my broken screen, and I received my refund. He is professional, just be sure to ask questions as there are different types of screens. read more
