Honestly it's a 5* for the service alone. The hostess was kind and seated me quickly where I wanted to be. Charlize, the waitress, was quick and attentive. When she went on break, the guy who took her place was always checking if I needed anything very often. I've never received that much attention at a restaurant before. So A+ service. The food was good. The chicken had really good seasoning and the sauce or rub on the ribs had some kick to it. Everything was delicious. The only things that could be better is if they gave a little piece of cornbread for the table to try. People rave about it but for a person of one, a skillet of cornbread is a lot. Little piece would be nice. Also, would be good to have a bit bigger portions, especially on the sides. I get it, cost gone up everywhere. There was no waiting area to sit and wait so we sat at the front table to wait and they came to us and said I am sorry we have to get this table ready for a reservation so told us to go shop and will text you 45min went by so my husband called and they said that we would be called at our reservation time if we would have known that prior we would of came back instead they left us hanging and on top of that the bench I was sitting at was not even prepped for a reservation and no was sitting there. Detailed review: I ordered the peppercorn crusted Tri-Tip, and it was nice that it came fast, but it was unfortunate that it was chewy and not very flavorful, I had to rely on the sauces to get some flavor, HOWEVER, when my server came to check on me and I shared I was a bit disappointed, she took that feedback to the manager, the manager came by and offer me a side of their Brisket, and what a difference, flavor was great, texture perfect, it was soft but meaty, perfect combo. It's been a while since we had been here. They still have the amazing cornbread which started the meal off perfectly. I ordered the pulled pork with a side of sweet potato fries and the Mac and cheese. Everything was delicious and the meat was so tender and tasty. My wife ordered the St. Louis ribs with a side of garlic mashed potatoes and the cream corn. Here again, the meat was so tender and tasty as it fell off the bone. Everything was delicious. We finished with the blueberry cobbler with a scoop of some amazing ice cream. The service was as amazing as the food. Came here because I was craving some good barbecue, and even after more than six years since my last visit, this place is still just as great. The food is delicious and absolutely worth recommending. The chicken was juicy, the pulled pork was savory, and although I didn't order the ribs, they looked incredible on nearby tables. The tri-tip was a bit on the fatty side, but still packed with flavor. I also love that they have a variety of barbecue sauces right at the table so you can mix things up. Service was awesome. I originally requested bar seating when I made the reservation, but when we arrived and saw how packed it was, we asked if we could switch to a table. They accommodated us right away, which I really appreciated. Our waitress was attentive, quick, and always on top of refills without us having to ask. The drinks were just as impressive. I tried a seasonal cocktail--something like a strawberry corn cake bourbon--and it was super refreshing and unique. Portion sizes are huge, so sharing is definitely an option. I absolutely loved this place. Immediately, we were greeted by the General Manager and he made sure that we were taken care of the entire time. It smelled so good when we sat down and I knew we had made the right decision coming here. What's also really nice is that they have a large outdoor seating area that wraps around the restaurant, as well as a decent-sized bar. My sister and I wanted to try out their sandwiches so that's what we did and we both ordered the exact same thing with two different sides: The Texas Prime Brisket Sandwich with macaroni and potato salad. It was so smokey, the portion was large, and with the additional spicy bbq sauce that they had on the table, it provided just the right amount of zing. I'm usually a fan of deviled eggs but I thought this dish was a little too vinegar-y for me so I would skip this one if you're not used to that flavor. The mac and cheese and potato salad were solid. Nothing to brag about but I would order them again. I'll need to try more of their traditional dishes. Gus's Barbecue is located on the east side of the Claremont Packing district. Parking is easy as there is a multi-level parking garage right next door. They have plenty of tables and booths inside, as well as seating at the bar with a view out front. Their outdoor patio is as big, if not bigger, than the inside space and has rotating fans above as well as heat lamps for when it's cold. Between the garage structure next door and being on the east side of the building, the patio is probably almost always shaded. It was such a nice day out, I sat out on the patio and you could tell that everyone was enjoying the atmosphere. While waiting for my food, I ordered the Blueberry Lemon Sour (Bourbon, amaretto, blueberry, lemon, vanilla foam, $14). If I didn't like it, it definitely looked good. Similar to my recent appreciation for well balanced Mezcal cocktails, well balanced Bourbon cocktails have also caught my fancy. The Bourbon is the dominant flavor, but the amaretto is not far behind. The lemon and muddled blueberry is in the background. This well balanced cocktail was a home run, and a bargain at only $14. I had the five bone Memphis Baby Back Ribs plate ($25.95), with sides of sautéed green beans and coleslaw. It must have been my lucky day, because my slab actually had six bones. The meat was cooked well, and came off the bone very easily. There was a good amount of meat on the bones, and I probably wouldn't have been able to finish the eight bone option. They have several BBQ sauces on the table. I tried three and liked them all. My favorites in order were the Memphis original (nice sweetness), Kansas City spicy (good spice level with sweetness in the background), and Carolina Gold (mustard forward with a little tang). They provide a wet nap to wipe your hands when you're done. The green beans were not mushy at all, and had great flavor prepared with light butter and garlic. The coleslaw was also very good with just the right amount of dressing which had a little tang. The portion size of the sides was good. My main server Ashley was friendly provided great service. The host who seated me and a few other servers who also delivered food and drink were also very friendly. A manager was walking around to make sure that everybody was enjoying their meal. All the food and drink was excellent. BBQ is expensive these days and both the cocktail and ribs were very reasonably priced. Five stars all the way! read more

All the food tasted reheated. There were parts that were raw, but then there were parts that were completely dry. The brisket tasted like it was days old. You could tell it had no moisture cool to touch and again it just all looked and tasted reheated. This was not fresh just off the grill food. The pork was shredded on the plate and Super dry. So just overall disappointing another outing where we wasted a bunch of money and asked ourselves why we went out we should've just stayed home and this is happening in a lot of places that we're going where years ago the food used to be fresh and good and now I guess to save money and cost these restaurants are reheating food, but it's just not good and it's extremely disappointing because we're having a hard time going out to eat and finding food that actually legitimately tastes really good where we wanna return. read more

Omg the brisket was so freaking tender u could cut it with your fork. I'm not gonna lie when I saw the fat on there I was like dang man, but it's cooked so well it literally melts in your mouth. My first time at the Claremont location and I love it!! The vibe is really nice and gives you a vacation vibe how one side of the bar is outside. We sat at the bar inside and it was very nice. We had very good service with a server I think name was Dana or Deena. Very good service and super attentive with good personality. For my drinks I ordered the Mai tai and sangria and it was my first time trying their Mai Tai's and they were really good and not too much sugar. For food options we ordered the honey wings and artichoke dip that was very good and fresh. Everything tasted really well. It's a good location to come to and grab a drink and enjoy the vibe. Met up with friends for dinner and drinks on a Saturday night. Gus's Barbeque had mixed reviews, but that has never stopped us before! I wouldn't say I'm a BBQ expert, but I do know good food when I taste it! And I taste-bud-verified excellence tonight. Our reservation was for a table on the patio because that morning the restaurant was already booked up for indoor seating. The restaurant sits right next to the parking structure, which means a built-in audience of foot traffic, car alarms, and the occasional well-timed car horn for dramatic effect. We ordered drinks while waiting for the rest of our party. The temperature outside kept dropping so we requested to move to a table under the heater. This could of went south but our waitress was accommodating. It took a minute but we made it happen. I didn't know what to order. I didn't want a salad, and I definitely didn't want to eat with my fingers, so I went out of the box and ordered the BBQ Loaded Baked Potato with no Texas Queso and added pulled pork. It was delicious, the portion was perfect, and the potato itself was fluffy and creamy like a warm hug from a carb loving grandma. My only critique would be I wish it had more bacon on top because I'm certifiably obsessed with bacon! My husband ordered the Memphis baby back ribs, and he devoured them like a man on a mission. They must have been good. It comes with two sides and he doubled-up on the French fries. So to my benefit I did eat some of his French fries. The French fries were addicting really crispy and flavorful. My friend had the Texas prime beef brisket sandwich. It looked really good I need to come back to give it a try. I ordered the BBQ Seared Steak Salad without blue cheese and a side of cornbread. The steak on its own was a little salty for my taste, but it worked well when eaten with the salad. It was nice because there wasn't too many people but still a lot of distractions to continue to train our pup (he's 3 1/2 but still call him my pup) in public situations. Had the cast iron skillet cornbread and it was everything that all the reviews say. Melt in your mouth goodness. I did not try the jalapeno jam but the honey butter was good. I ordered the fried chicken with the mashed potatoes and collard greens. Everything was great. The mashed potatoes were very creamy. I would have liked some texture in them, but good flavor overall. Husband got the gumbo. Shrimps were tender. Felt like I there wasn't a lot of protien included. 5 or so whole shrimp, very little sausage and chicken. Mainly veggies. Had a work conference nearby so I had to come stop by Gus's BBQ! We got the cheddar jalapeño sausage, ribs, brisket, and mashed potatoes, which were all very spot on! We especially enjoyed the brisket because it has consistently been moist and tender each time we have had it, which can really effect the entire experience if it comes out dry, which was not the case at all. Reservations recommended if you are planning to go on a Friday or Saturday night, but if you don't mind waiting, your typically looking at a 45 minute to an hr waiting depending on how busy it is. Once there I was sat quickly. Inside was loud but not noisy, was still able to talk. They had country music playing so that was a nice touch. For drinks, I got the Charred Citrus Mule (pictured) - Vodka/grilled lemon syrup/lime/ginger beer. 2nd drink was the Hibiscus Margarita (pictured) - Hibiscus-infused Blanco tequila/licor 43/grapefruit/agave/lime. Both drinks were strong, flavorful and refreshing. 1 star. For the appetizer, I got the classic spinach and artichoke dip. Pretty standard, housemade seasoned chips and charred salsa, which i think I ate more of the salsa than the dip 1 star. I did also have a house salad tossed in ranch, everything was going good until I bit into the housemade croutons which almost chipped my tooth!! LoL I was really excited about the croutons but it was a major fail cause they were hard as a rock and tasted days old. No stars for that snafu. For entrees I tried the BBQ Loaded Baked Potato and the BBQ Brisket Tacos (both pictured) The baked potato, was a good size, drenched in Texas Queso topped with bacon, shredded cheddar and chopped brisket. While it was hearty, it lacked brisket, I feel like I got 2 tablespoons of brisket but a half cup of bacon! More potato and bacon than brisket topping, it was still good though. 1/2 a star The brisket tacos though, DELICIOUS AF! Topped with the Original BBQ sauce, fire roasted corn pico, ancho salsa, Monterey jack, cilantro and pickled red onion. They pair these flavors perfectly with each bit i got a heart serving of brisket, the toppings and the flavor. Served with a side of chips or your choice. 1 and a half star for the tacos. All in all Gus's BBQ is a change up for your normal BBQ spots like Lucille's. Service is quick and friendly. Food and drinks are good, depending on you palette and a solid location for a night out. I came here on the weekend so the Claremont Village area was packed. I did have to park far and walk for errands. I was seated quickly at the bar since I came by myself. I have been trying various brisket from restaurants in the area. This place had a ribs and 2 meat combo plate ($33.95), so I got their brisket, smoked sausage, and Memphis baby back ribs to try with their lemonade. The brisket was tender with a good smoke ring, the table had bottles of various bbq sauce to try with the meats. The smoke sausage had a good snap and was moist. The baby back ribs were tender and came off the bone easily. The place is loud with the tables filled with people inside and on the outside patio. The chips come topped with a three cheese sauce, bbq baked beans, smoked mozzarella, jack cheese, tomato, red onion, guacamole, pickled jalapeños, cilantro + original bbq sauce. My partner and I came on a Friday night, I believe and we were sat immediately on their outdoor patio. It was nice that we didn't have to wait considering that Gus's is very popular and it was a Friday! Our server was super great! It's been a few weeks since we've gone and sadly I don't remember her name, but I would hope to run into her again on our next visit. She was super nice and even recommended me the Hurricane cocktail as I was having trouble selecting what I want. Our food was extremely delicious as well! The pulled pork nachos came out at as an appetizer and we devoured them like there was no tomorrow. The meat was fresh and everything together just melted in your mouth! Stopped by Gus for a late Sunday lunch after a snowy morning in Mt Baldy. We were seated in ~20min for a party of five. Our table ordered the cast iron cornbread to start; it was quick, fresh, and almost like a bit of a "pudding" texture in the middle. Our table loved it with the butter and jalepeno jam, since we find most corn breads to be on the drier and grainy side. Our favorite meat by far was the Memphis baby back ribs! So tender, full of flavor, and the right amount of fat. This didn't need any sauce, perfect on its own. The St. Louis ribs were definitely on the drier side. I've been to Gus's BBQ in Claremont many times, and every visit has been consistently great. Whether dining in or catering, the service is always top-notch. The staff is attentive, kind, and genuinely welcoming. Our most recent visit was for my daughter's birthday--her one request was Gus's mac and cheese. Our server, Kate, was incredibly sweet with her, and as any parent knows, you can tell a lot about a person by how they treat your kids. My wife and I really appreciated that extra kindness. Since we went mid-week on a rainy evening, the restaurant was quieter than usual, which was a nice change from the typically lively weekend crowd. I started with an Arnold Palmer, which was perfectly balanced, and we shared an order of sweet potato fries--crispy, flavorful, and paired with an amazing dipping sauce (not sure what's in it, but it was a hit with everyone). For my main meal, I went with the ribs and two-meat platter, choosing St. Louis ribs, brisket, and jalapeño cheddar sausage. Every bite was packed with flavor, and I devoured it all. My sides--creamed corn and dirty rice--were just as good. To top off an already great meal, they brought out a sundae for my daughter's birthday, which was such a thoughtful touch. THANK YOU, GUS! Family was in town for a lacrosse tournament, and we had no clue where to go in this region, as I do not get out of L.A. much. Pomona was scary abandoned. Thankfully, a friend recommended Claremont and Gus's! What a fun, vibrant, adorable little area. Food was good - and best of all, we weren't in Pomona any longer. I went with a party of 11 and was good. We were seated at inside without a wait for a Saturday night, I had just ordered water to drink when it came we were ready to order appetizers and entrees including cornbread (very good), chips with spinach and queso dips (good), onion strings (good but greasy), and then entree was two meat with ribs combo. Server Kelly suggested Memphis style with more meat than St Louis and he's right. I chose beef brisket and sides fries and Mac and cheese. Our orders didn't take long; ribs were good, both brisket and fries were too salty and Mac and cheese was good. I didn't had room for dessert. I didn't try and any sauces by the way. We came to the Claremont packing district to check it out and decided to give this place a try. We love BBQ, so we are pretty picky (we look for good quality meat, the taste of the sauce, and the overall quality of the food). The pros, it's a cute place with okay service. Our server wasn't attentive at all, but someone did notice we needed refills and brought them. We started with some appetizers, which were okay- I would compare this place to Lucilles and honestly it is subpar. It is pricey! So just be aware of that. The meat (brisket and pulled pork) were extremely fatty and lacked flavor, the ribs my son got were not tender, and the sauces were okay, our favorite part of the meal was the Mac and cheese. Based on the service and quality of food, we wouldn't be back. It's not the worst BBQ place, but for the price point there are plenty o of places we enjoy more. read more

Bury me in their wings and mac & cheese I love coming to Gus's honestly both the Claremont and South Pasadena locations because the service is always good and the food always hits. I also always order the iceberg wedge salad, not pictured here, but it is the perfect appetizer along with their cornbread, which has the jalapeño jam which is so delicious. read more
