Slow Roasted Prime Rib
James C.

I've always been curious about this place on the hilltop whenever I pass it driving on the 10 fwy, and finally made it here for a celebration. While I'm glad I checked it off the list, the food was nothing to rave about. To be fair, the staff was great. The hostess and our server were super friendly and helpful. However, the food just wasn't anything special. I had the prime rib, filet mignon, and a baked potato. That said, it didn't ruin the night. I kind of went in with the mindset that you're paying for the vibe anyway. The old mining decor is unique and the view of the valley is nice. I think it's a good idea to come for a drink and the scenery, but maybe keep average expectations for the meal.

First time going to Pomona Valley Mining Co., and this review is based on my experience of the UCSC presentation workshop there. We went there with our daughter, and the venue was great. We had complimentary valet parking that day because UCSC paid for it. The ambiance is nice, and the view is beautiful. We first went downstairs to check out the university information, and then we had a self-serve buffet lunch upstairs. The banquet room is spacious. It had a lot of food on that day. Most of the food tasted great, except the beef was chewy. The event was well-organized, and they were very generous. The service was attentive that day. They took away my empty plate after I finished my lunch, and also refilled the iced tea and iced water. I would visit Pomona Valley Mining Co. for their dinner.

After living nearby for almost 20 years and driving past this place countless times, we finally decided to try it for a date night--and I'm honestly wondering why we waited so long. The restaurant is set in an old mine on top of a hill, which already makes it feel unique, but the view takes it to another level. The ambiance is dim, romantic, and has this charming, slightly rustic vibe that reminded me of Ghost Town at Knott's Berry Farm (in the best way). We started with a couple of their signature cocktails--the Banana Hammock was good, but the Pickin' Mule was even better. Definitely recommend trying both. For appetizers, we had the calamari steak, which was really good. Entrées come with access to the salad bar, and I have to say--the clam chowder was delicious. For my main dish, I ordered the 8 oz filet mignon cooked medium, and it came out absolutely perfect. The sides (mushrooms and baked potato) were solid, though nothing particularly standout. Service was excellent from start to finish, which really made the whole experience even better. Overall, we found ourselves a new date night spot and will definitely be back.

The Pomona Valley mining company looks pretty cool on top of the hill. What's not cool about it is the fact that they make you pay $10 to either valet or self park and it creates quite a kerfuffle when it comes to leaving. The valet is just a mess! Prices as follows: $50 per adult, $25 for kid, and a crap load for gratuity when your server doesn't even serve you on Sunday Brunch days. The kitchen knows how to cook, but this place really needs to offer pricing for brunch whether you choose to indulge in bottomless mimosas or just drink water. You must continually serve yourself water in 3 ounce glasses. I had to bring four glasses to the table just to keep myself hydrated. Happy restaurant-ing.

We had a Sunday brunch reservation and arrived at the restaurant 10 minutes prior to 10 am. The view is pretty, it was a sunny, clear morning. Service was good. Personally the food was just okay. Not much options, most dishes tasted similarly. The place could be a little cleaner. I noticed a piece of dried meat on my chair. We were looking forward to eating the crab legs but got super disappointed as it was cold and the body was iced cold, that made the meat all salty. Scrambled eggs station was okay.

Beautiful view, the restaurant is western theme which goes well with their menu. They have a well stocked salad bar and yummy dessert.

My first time ever coming to Pomona Valley Mining Co which is literally located right off the freeway. I have seen their huge sign many times but just never got around to coming here. I went here early for a Sunday Brunch which is an all-you-can-eat buffet style. There are many separate sections around the entire place. It is rustic and looks like a dark wooden mine. There is a dessert section, hot meats, and a salad area. Overall I did find that the food was pretty good. With many different items that you can get. You can also get a freshly made omelet from the chefs or carved out meats as well. Oh yeah also make a reservation because this place is quite busy on Sunday! Enjoy :)

Not my favorite buffet, but not the worst one I've been to either. The perennial offering of prime rib was very good as was the omlette station taking a request to make my Up Easy eggs sunny and runny with the best of restaurants. But the biscuits and gravy, miner potatoes, and ham was very poor. The waffles and simple chafing dish scrambled eggs, but that's very routine stuff for a buffet. The service was great though. The free mimosas and juices were provided quickly, and the dirty plates were getting cleared as fast as they piled up. They even took special requests like Bloody Mary's like champs. Lastly, I thought the ambience was fair. I found the hallways too tight and inconvenient. I also thought the layout of the buffet stations confusing and ill-planned. They should've all been grouped together more tightly, or even have a dedicated dining room set aside from them instead of so spaced out. I almost didn't know there were three locations--like a scavenger hunt--to the buffet. I also found the mining theme kitschy and inauthentic as they very easily could've had the actual decor from mining outfits shipped in. In summation, this was a good approximation of a nice buffet but there were many areas it could have been approved. I probably won't be back.

Absolutely love this steak house!! I've came here twice and every time was amazing. They have a salad and soup bar that comes with your entree and then they give you some cheesy bread to the table. My bf and I share an entree and they will split the steak for the both of you. They do charge you $10 I believe to share a plate. But overall the vibes of this place is amazing and the views are pretty. They also have a happy hour menu at the bar!

My favorite Sunday brunch! The food is great. Everyone is super attentive and has great customer service.

I live in Northern California and every time I fly into the LA area I do my best to stop into Pomona Valley Mining co! Their salad and soup bar is so fresh & delicious, homemade soups as well. One word well two words, CHEESY BREAD, it's so good! Complimentary as well! My entree go to is their rib eye steak and they make very good cocktails, I love the old fashioned wit cafe de olla syrup. The staff are all very friendly and helpful and you can't beat the sunset view! I would suggest making a reservation because they can be quite busy!

I "try" to make it out to this restaurant at least once every 1-2 years. I've continued coming here since my 1st time after moving to SGV from West Los Angeles in 2017. It's still one of my splurge-favorites because of the view that overlooks all of Pomona. It's a gorgeous view especially at night that you will get to experience from "almost" every table in the restaurant. Great place to take pictures. And the service is great too-friendly, humorous if you want, you don't get forgotten, waiters are well informed of menu selections and are great at making suggestions and their "full bar" mixologist isn't stingy either. My Dirty Martini was served very well in a chilled glass and was generous with the Grey Goose. Everything I've ordered here is always cooked to perfection and perfectly how you request your steaks done. Even the bake potato is perfectly cooked. I can't not ever have the baked potato with my dinner-it's sooo amazing. This time, I ordered the Chicken Breast (with lemon butter sauce) and Ribs (1/2 rack of bbq ribs) with my baked potato of course and grilled asparagus to share with my date. He ordered the Baby Back Pork Ribs (full rack) with a baked potato as well. Additionally, all entree's include the soup & salad bar. I was trying to hold off for my entree but I was dying to try the tortilla and clam chowder soups. Both yummy! Neither soup was my favorite because they were both delicious. Let me just tell you how my entree was-the chicken breast is roasted. It was one of the best roasted chicken breasts I've had. It was a good thick size and not one inch of it was dry. In fact, it almost felt like it melted in my mouth! Even at the thickest part of the breast. I was actually very impressed how evenly cooked it was, the flavor and how I could swear it melted in my mouth. Seriously! The ribs are also and always excellent-the bbq sauce is not overly sweet, and the meat falls off the bone easily. I've had the ribs here several times because every time I come here someone always orders it. I usually order steaks and they are all excellent as well but my favorite is the Fillet Mignon. This time I wanted to try their chicken because I've never had chicken here. That being said, whether you order the chicken, steak, ribs, lobster tail, scampi, shrimp or prime rib, I'm positive it'll be cooked perfectly, taste amazing and you'll be satisfied. I've never been to a special event party here, but I do know they can accommodate that and they do have an upstairs (I've never been but for special events). If you're coming for dinner I recommend making reservations especially if you want a table at the window. I've sat at the window tables and also behind them. I do prefer behind the window tables at a booth because it's more comfortable and I still have a great view. Regardless where you sit, you'll still enjoy the view and your meal. I'm not sure if it's just my luck, but each time I've come here for dinner, they seem to always play a good blend of relaxing music (music by artists you'll recognize) that is romance focused, nice and everyone can enjoy. Inside, it's decorated like you're inside a gold mine so it's not lit up with strong lighting all over. Just enough lighting to see well while still keeping it at that romantic ambiance. Oh...and I almost forgot-we ordered the chocolate cake to-go, and after having it later, I wished we ordered 2 slices (because it was that good if you're a chocolate lover like me that wanted to keep it all for myself) even though one slice was more than enough to share. It's a generous slice. It was moist and bursting in rich chocolate cake flavor. Not too sweet or sugary like when I make it at home. lol Thinking of it now makes me want to pickup a slice. If you've never been here, I highly recommend. I've been here for my Birthday, just any day with a friend, for other celebrations and I've never been disappointed. If you check out their website, you'll see that they do have special dinner events throughout the year with special exclusive menu's, a holiday menu and other things. They do have a special event coming up in February for Valentine's Day. The menu and event looks great and perfectly planed for romance in February with your special someone. When I return next time, I think I'm going to go for the Filet and Lobster Tail because again, I love filet mignon especially theirs and I haven't had their lobster or any of their seafood plates yet, or I'll try them for brunch. This restaurant is not your average casual steakhouse dinner. It's more of a "special night" out kind of vibe. Dinner prices range from $30-$50+ per person which is not outrageous. And for a steakhouse/seafood place with views and an event vibe, they aren't out of line. They are like a "special dinner" kind of price-point. I hope you enjoy this place as much as I do when I go. They have clean bathrooms, lots of parking and the staff are always friendly and pleasant.

The skinny crab legs

The hostess Jocelyn needs more customer service training. She was very RUDE! Jessica our waitress was very attentive. Thank you Jessica. The chef at the carving station was very courteous The set up of the buffet was not customer friendly. Mexican food is ok. the salmon was not fresh. The crab legs are too skinny Prime rib is ok. Desserts are not appetizing ribs are ok. I didn't try the other American food. Salad bar is ok although I didn't try those The place is ok. I find some dining areas dark though. Restrooms are clean.

I couldn't even hear the person across from me that I came with to eat dinner nor could I hear the server either. The restaurant was so excruciatingly loud that it genuinely caused bad ear pain and a headache so we left before ordering anything else besides water. Completely ruined the entire experience. And for reference I don't have any hearing problems and I'm in my 20s, so if I can't hear what the person directly next to me is saying then there's a problem here. It was so crowded and full of loud drunk people. Incredibly overwhelming. This place needs better max capacity laws in place or if they actually have them they're definitely not following them here. Also the inside set up is like a labyrinth. It's a confusing half open concept to the outside, half inside, and all very overstimulating. None of the staff seemed concerned at all with the hundreds of people overfilling the restaurant loudly speaking/yelling. This is unacceptable to be honest. I just wanted to come here to have a nice dinner after a long day at work and I couldn't. Beware of the noise especially if you have children or older people in your party; we didn't have either but I can't imagine how they'd feel in this chaotic environment. Btw, sitting outside won't change or help this fact either as it was also extremely overcrowded and nearly just as loud as well. 1/5 stars. Please manage your capacity better because it's driving customers away. This is supposed to be a nice restaurant not a club.

The bottomless mimosas ($29.99) sound like a great deal, but just know how they run it. There's a 90-minute minimum, and they don't bring a bottle to the table--you get one mimosa at a time, and you have to finish it before they'll bring another. The first one I got tasted like straight orange juice barely any champagne. I sent it back and to their credit, they remade it much better They mentioned they control pours to keep the environment in check, which I understand--but if you're expecting free-pour vibes, that's not the case here. Food-wise: French toast & breakfast potatoes were really good However the Chilaquiles were super dry and lacked flavor--wouldn't recommend Burger & fries were decent, but nothing special As for drink pricing, it does lean a bit on the higher side. bucket of 5 beers was around $42, $15 for a Tito's vodka shot, and even a basic Jack and Coke came out to about $18 with tip, which felt a little steep for the area. the best deal was definitely the green tea shots at only $9 I will say, our waitress Priscilla was great. She had a lot of tables and seemed a bit overwhelmed, but she still made an effort to check on us and kept my mimosas coming pretty promptly. I didn't have to wait long at all between refills, which I appreciated. Since we went for a special event, the DJs were great and really kept the energy up the whole time Parking was easy. It did say there was a $2 fee, but when we printed the ticket, we weren't charged--so it might be free, but I'd still double-check at the kiosk just in case. Overall: decent spot for the vibe, music, and brunch outing, but just be prepared for controlled drinks and slightly higher prices.

We went here for mother's day. It was my first time here. It is definitely a pricier establishment…read moreso I was looking forward to finally trying it out. We sat outside and the ambiance (both inside and outside) were nice. The outside was definitely a lot quieter than inside, and the server next to us even offered to turn on the heaters (though not needed). I enjoyed being outside. We started off with appetizers which included grilled octopus and oysters. Although, even though they were on ice, the oysters weren't cold enough for me. Still, we downed them with the fresh horseradish and cocktail sauce and just prayed about it later lol. My family liked the grill octopus. It was tender and had a very smokey char flavor but if I'm being honest, it was not MY favorite so I probably would not personally order again. Even my mom said she thought it was "just alright." I ordered the Branzino and it lacked in flavor. I was not a fan of the green sauce it had on the side. It was not completely terrible, but not great either. It was cooked well and crispy, but that's all I can say for it as even Tabasco didn't make it great. The best thing of the night was probably the lamb chops and the cheese ravioli. They were both cooked well & tasted great so if I were to come back Id stick to pasta and that. The lychee mocktails & their ricotta cheesecake were probably my favorite things on the menu. The tart was decent. Our waiter was slow at times and kept either forgetting certain drinks or what we asked of him or the kitchen was just slower than usual. I'm not sure which, but service wasn't on par with the price point in my opinion. Luckily we were pretty relaxed, but my mom had finished her food by the time her wine arrived. Overall, it was an ok night. My family at least had fun and enjoyed their time there. The food was presented nicely, and service was OK as a whole but I'm not sure I'd come back on my own accord again. Definitely nice to say I've visited & tried it out at least once though!

The music was playing sod in the background, no need to shout to have a conversation. We went on Easter Day, and even though it was busy, the servers, the bartenders, and kitchen were on point! Service was amazing, very friendly! Our server went out of her way to take a pic of us. The food was amazing! Everything we had was delicious! From the soup, to the drinks to the desserts. Must try this place!! Do suggest making a reservation! Unless you want to stop by at the bar and enjoying their amazing happy hour!
