First time trying Gus's Fried Chicken was in Memphis several years back. After hearing they opened up a location here in the Atlanta area, I had to give it a shot. Although it would never meet the taste of the "original", Gus's World Famous will have to be my FAVORITE restaurant for Fried Chicken. Prices are relatively average for a selection of the pieces. That being said, the reason it is a 4 out of 5 is other than the fried chicken itself, there's nothing else that I would confidently compliment on. The sides such as the coleslaw, okra, and the mac & cheese are rather decent and quite over-priced for simple sides. You can feel the traditional southern style of service with hospitable staffs. Yum! Who doesn't like fried chicken, and Gus's sells some delicious chicken. I really like how juicy and flavorful the chicken is and the outer coating is thin and super crisp. My friend had the chicken tenders -- delicious -- with what tasted like homemade Ranch dressing. Her mac n cheese was creamy with a nice sharp cheddar bite. The baked beans were thick and sweet with good flavor. I had the 2 piece dark meat plate with fried okra and slaw. I really like the thin, crispy outer coating of the chicken and the juiciness of the meat. The fried okra were good especially dipped in some of that tasty Ranch dressing. The slaw was fine and not too sweet. It turns out that Gus's sells one flavor of chicken, what they call "Hot and Spicy." It's got a bit of a kick, but it's not too spicy at all. The interior is nicely done, with exposed brick, concrete floors and cheerful decor. The table service is cheerful, too. We enjoyed a slice of chocolate chess pie. It had deep chocolate flavor -- another yum! As a fan of downtown Chamblee, I am thrilled to see that even in a "soft opening" stage, this restaurant is doing a good business. The location is really close to my work place so we decided to stop by for lunch. It's suppose to be a really famous friend chicken chain from Memphis, but the parking lot was very empty. We got seated very quickly, the place was pretty empty during lunch time. The staff was very friendly. We had someone take our drinks order shortly after we were seated. I asked our server how long they had been open for since i expected the place to be more crowded during lunch time, she said they only been open for 3 months now. Anyways, I had the two piece (leg and thigh) plate with french fries and coleslaw, i substituted the french fries with beans. The food took about 15 mins to come out after ordering. Our server was great, and frequently asked us if we need refills or not. The chicken was great, it was right out of the fryer so very hot yet juicy. The fries were pretty good, not soggy at all. Went to this location yesterday 10/28 ordered a white meat plate & white meat snack waited 20minutes for order no problem I was given dark meat corrected asap. The chicken all of was cold taste like it was fried 5 hours ago in a hotbox no crisp terrible. We notified the waitress she had a attitude I could hear the manager say they will have to wait 20 mins well if you got it right the first time we wouldn't have to wait. As stated in previous reviews of the original location in Memphis, I am a Gus's fan. I visited this new location in Chamblee today for lunch for the first time. The parking lot is quite small so I can see that becoming an issue during busy times, but I was able to find a spot. I arrived right at noon and it was busy but there were seats available. A luxury you won't experience in Memphis. The staff was pleasant and took my order right away. The chicken is cooked fresh so it takes a few minutes, but it is well worth the wait. My three piece dark meal was delicious. It was so hot (temperature wise) that I had to let it cool for a while before I could eat it. A good problem in my opinion. The chicken is quite crispy and pretty spicy, but not too spicy. It was also delicious! I highly recommend Gus's fried chicken if you haven't tried it. read more

Literally my favorite fried chicken spot in the world. I've been a BUNCH of times & have only experienced incredible food & super-friendly staff. The fried chicken is so good. I don't know how they maintain the juiciness while getting the skin as crispy as they do but, wow... delish! Their chicken is a bit spicy (if you can't handle spice) so just be aware of that though. Their sides are really good too .. I enjoy the typical Mac n cheese, beans, & slaw but others have said good things about the friend tomatoes & okra. My boyfriend and I came to Georgia to visit family. We were told to get good chicken from Gus's. Now the chicken was delicious. The breast was juicy and fresh. The sides were good. I did wish they had other hot sauces/dipping sauce to choose from. But definitely a 5 star from me. Now, our server which was a young man was definitely helpful. The cooks behind the counter were rude. We ordered 4 mac n cheese but only got two. So we asked our server politely that we were still waiting on 2 more. The cooks were making fun of us. We could hear the female cook saying that "we were lying" about not getting the sides then proceed to slam things in the kitchen. I think after that we just lost our appetite. Again the server was super nice so we gave him a nice tip and we thanked him many times for his wonderful service despite how nasty the cooks were. Will we try this location again? Disappointed that this was what I got from Gus' on Chamblee. I've eaten here before and it was fine but to get these unseasoned, stale fries without the ordered honey mustard is just annoying. Amazing chicken and sides! Highly recommend to anyone who likes chicken and southern food

This restaurant just opened not long ago in a shopping center that's currently being brought back to life which is awesome! Super cute area with parking right up front. If for some reason parking is full there is plenty on the side and in back. There are two different dining rooms which gives you options as to where to sit. Staff seems new but nice. We were not welcomed when we walked in but I think we must have snuck in because others were greeted and told to take a seat anywhere they like. Our server was nice and kept or drinks filled. The manager seems to know what he's doing and seems to keep the place running smoothly even for just opening. Others have stated that the food is spicy.... which it is but I didn't have a problem with it and I'm very picky when it come to something being spicy. But that was to be expected considering its called Gus' world famous spicy chicken. The plates seem to come with plenty of food as myself and my fiancé both took home leftovers. Kids seem to be welcome as they offer a kids menu and there were other kids there as well. I think it's a fun spot that gives the neighborhood a different option than anything we currently have. We moved away a year ago. On our visit back, Gus's was on our list. At 1pm in the afternoon, there were plenty of tables available. This should have been a red flag. First, they were out of thighs. We compromised. Then, it took 45 minutes to get our meal. During this 45 minutes we were not offered refills. Again, the restaurant was not busy. The staff had time to complain to each other about how slow the cook was moving. We ask for refills and ask where the food is. Reason: they had to get more meat. So they were not only out of thighs. Food: this is one of the stars I gave. The food was delicious as always. Slaw was crisp and sweet. Chicken was hot and crunchy. This is the only chicken skin worth the calories in my opinion. The kids decide they want chess pie. We look around, ok, this shouldn't take long...15 minutes later and I'm talking to the manager. We have now been here for an hour and a half. The second star is for the manager providing a discount because of our wait and the server that used to wait on us all the time remembering us. So our server was new and didn't know how to do what, I'm not sure...but get it together Gus's. This Chamblee location should we killing it. It shouldn't be empty at lunchtime. Lunch with the Kid today! Couldn't wait to go to Gus's. We had it in Memphis 2 years ago but did not get the full treatment. We did today. Walking in, we were greated by everyone working there. Ask you can do is smile and wave. Our server, Rah, was excellent. She was kind and patient with us since we didn't know what we wanted. After being told over & over I had to try this chicken I finally got my chance today. So glad it did, I dined in the place has a down home rustic feel. Pretty busy even though it was pouring raining out. They do greet you when walking in and it's self seating. We had the nicest waiter he was very attentive and helpful. Menu was easy split into light and dark meat. All the meal came with baked beans, slaw, and a slice of white bread. You can exchange the side for others like greens or Mac &Cheese like I did. That Mac was so creamy. Greens were seasoned well they do tell you there's pork and onions in the greens. Chicken was crispy had some spice under the skin. Everything was delicious. This is my second visit to this location. The first time it was so busy I simply did not have the time to wait for the fresh never frozen chicken. This visit I made sure I waited. To my surprise the chicken is absolutely delicious. There are few I like fried chicken and not one of them is a restaurant. Gus's has exceeded my expectations. The chicken was fried to perfection. I was looking forward to checking this place out so I decided to grab a to-go plate for a weekday lunch. Overall the prices of their meals are great, but I thought the chicken was your average flavored crispy fried chicken. I ordered the two piece white plate which comes with a breast, wing, white bread and coleslaw and beans. For a small upcharge you can change your sides so I got the mac cheese and okra. When I arrived to pick up my order at the quoted time it was ready. The mac n cheese was NOT what I expected and had more of an processed cheese taste (pure Velvetta) with paprika spirkled and real shredded cheddar on top. Why the real cheese was not used to make this dish (because baked macaroni with real cheese is pretty epic) I do not know.....The okra was actually pretty good though. So that saved the sides. And, the wing..as others have said, they are SUPER small...like smaller than your palm. I wouldn't rush to go back or make a suggestion to others to come here for the food, but it wasn't the worst meal I have ever had either. Yea. Pretty average in my opinion. read more

Not the best experience that I have had at a restaurant. Service was almost non-existent. We came here for our 1-hour lunch and placed our order almost right when we got there since we knew we had to get back to work. We jealously watched as another table got their drinks and food before us when they walked in AFTER we ordered... WTF ... maybe you have to call ahead. (?) The first time I came here about 5 months ago, I was not impressed. I don't remember the specifics but I remember the chicken was just average. I decided to give it another shot. I ordered take out which was a half chicken, fried okra and collards. I would have given this place 5 stars but the service was pretty bad. Not sure I have ever said take out service was bad. Service: I ordered at the counter. The elderly female seemed to be distracted and looking around. I told her several times what I wanted and she kept asking me additional questions about the order. I told her the sides, then she asked another three times what sides I want which I kept repeating. The place was empty and pretty quite. I hope she was just a new employee. I waited about 20 minutes for my order and no other person entered the restaurant while I was there. The same lady came and said my order was ready. While walking out, I looked down and noticed the order was not mine. I went back and handed it to the same lady. She asked me what I ordered (again I was the only person to order anything in the 20 minutes I was there). After another 15 minutes she finally brought the food. Food: I typically don't eat fried chicken but had a craving and I am glad I did. The skin was crispy and flavored well. The inside was very juicy. The chicken was really good!! When we arrived, the place wasn't too busy so we were able to get seated and assisted quickly. Their menu was filled of delicious southern classics and it was hard to choose what to order. I've been eating fried chicken for 60+ years now and aside from Aunt Fanny's Cabin, Gus"s is the best. Their sides are great, with the turnip greens and fried okra leading the pack. If I could change anything, I'd prefer cornbread instead of the white bread that is offered. read more

Beyond Disappointing I was craving Gus' hot and spicy chicken, but what I got last night was a hot mess! They said they were out of coleslaw. Instead I got cold dried out chicken that had been fried too long, sugary potato salad, cold dried baked beans and a slice of white bread so hard my mom thought it had been toasted. Mother had macaroni and cheese as a side. She described it as "gooey" It clearly had too much cheese sauce. She did eat the fried okra though. We ended up throwing most of the $22 dinner in the trash. I noticed the restaurant seemed empty and there was a "Hiring All Positions" sign in the window.
