Chicken Tenders & Fries
Markus D L.

They are really cookin in this kitchen!!! It's solid Southern Cuisine/ Soul food Searched online for a place to eat, Found this place and drove here. Went Inside and was told to order online from my phone. Well it's a good thing that after traveling there was some charge left on my phone. Had to go back inside to inform them of an issue with their site: Every side they offered wasn't listed/available with the meal i wanted. They told me to leave a comment in the notes/comment section saying what sides i wanted. Hopefully they've fixed that by now. Overall they were friendly people. Thought about eating there. There are a few tables outside that are shared with other businesses in the area. Speaking of the area, I almost passed by this place. It's in a little plaza that's not busy and i wasn't sure if they were open. Little did I know they have a steady flow of customers and it's all take-out so ppl are in and out quickly.... I enjoyed my food. The wings were good and deliciously seasoned! I'm glad they were whole wings as opposed to up North where a "wing" is just a section of the whole. I was a fan of the sides but that's a matter of taste. Yams were a lil sweet. Black Eyed peas were yum.. I've never had Cornbread stuffing other than Stovetop, so I enjoyed that. Jury is still out on the Mac and cheese. It was good, but I would need some more to tell if I liked it or loved it... Imma try the greens next time. This trip I was just hungry and definitely not thinkin about a vegetable... I don't even think they take phone orders, which is okay to eliminate any errors in your order but Now that I know the process, order online, pay, and pick it up, it should be simple and Everything should go smoothly for an enjoyable meal from Southern Kitchen & Grill! A few notes extra I've gathered: -Because all orders on done online, if they are out of something and you order from someplace other than their site. they still haven't figured out the best way to communicate that with the customer. But if you order from their site, they will call you. - If there is ever an issue with the food (I'm sure it's only a rare occasion) their only resolution is to replace the food, not realizing/recognizing your sacrifice of time and/or efforts to get the food - If you're like me and still carry cash, that's not gonna help you here. I like using cash, but since everything is done online they take most forms of payment other than cash Once you get the hang of it, you will enjoy!!!

The damage via Uber Eats. Well worth every penny!

I've ordered from this place twice now and have not been disappointed either time. The food and service is excellent! I enjoy food from Matthews and Magnolia Room, but Southern Kitchen blows them out of the water as well as probably most of the competition in the area when it comes to take-out comfort food. Keep in mind this is an online business. The first time I ordered here, I went through GrubHub. My other half really wanted to try the brisket. So we ordered that and a whole mess of sides (mostly for me LOL, I'm such a sides and sauces person with every meal). In any case, when I arrived I found out they had run out of brisket, but the young man helping me told me they didn't have a way to contact me via GrubHub. Even though my hubby really only wanted the brisket, I had my heart set on the sides. So I agreed to try a sampling of the other meats instead. They boxed up some catfish, plain fried wings, and a smothered turkey leg in place of the brisket we had ordered. The young man was so nice to package everything very securely and offered to bring the order out to my car when it would be ready. Excellent communication and customer service here! My mom ate the turkey, which she said she really enjoyed and looked very flavorful and moist. My other half and I worked on the catfish and chicken and sides. And let me tell you, everything was cooked and seasoned to perfection! It's rare I'll order from somewhere and be happy to try everything a second time. There was no "bad" dish. Every last dish was amazing! I called a second time to order after that and the young man who picked up said they can do phone orders but you'd probably have to bring cash down or do cashapp which I don't have on my phone. So basically you can order from their website, GrubHub, or Uber Eats like I did yesterday. There might be other platforms, but those are the ones I know of. Their website didn't work for me the past times I tried to order from them. Just yesterday I ordered all my favorite sides again and some lemon pepper wings via delivery. I got the sweet potato cheesecake for dessert which was so delicious and creamy with a perfect, cookie-like crust. I forgot to mention, the first time we also tried the strawberry crunch cheesecake also. They have a great dessert menu full of cheesecakes, pies, bread pudding, etc. I think my favorites from the menu have got to be the baked beans, dressing, and mac and cheese. They had run out of dressing yesterday, but on Uber Eats they responded quickly so I could pick a different side which was nice. I'm very picky about baked beans as I grew up on some really awesome homemade ones from my mom, but these are mouthwatering. They are the perfect mix of sweet and spicy, and I love that they use ground turkey in them. Seriously, don't sleep on this place any longer if you have been! It's worth every penny, and according to Yelp, you are also supporting a family owned and operated, veteran owned and operated, small, black business. So what are you waiting for? I know I'll be back soon. Thanks for the awesome food and service, Southern Kitchen!

Ordered from here with high hopes. I got the Southern Surf n Turf. The fried fish was really good, a little tough, but good. The chicken wings were not salted at all, and neither were the black eyed peas or garlic mashed potatoes. Overall quite disappointing esp if you've had good southern food.

Let's start off with the customer service. The customer service was on point and very great . The food is the disappointment. It's take out only , there's no seating inside . You have to order everything online and they only take cards only I spent $61 I ordered the 2 piece catfish with Mac n cheese and yams I ordered the banana pudding and strawberry crunch cheesecake my boyfriend ordered the chicken sandwich The yams was straight oil , no cinnamon or sugar a huge disappointment The Mac n cheese had no seasoning whatsoever. It was the most blandest Mac and cheese I've ever tasted in my life. I would've personally preferred Kraft Mac n cheese at this point. The honey cornbread muffin was alright . The fried fish was cooked to perfection and was the best thing out of all the food. Did everyone forget how to make homemade banana pudding ??? You know the one that starts with whole milk and eggs on the stove ? I am so tired of boxed banana pudding . Strawberry crunch cheese cake was great no complaints. Overall I feel like I caught this restaurant on a bad day and I would try them again but on someone else dime. I wasn't happy with my food at all .

I've been curious about Southern Kitchen for a while now, after frequent visits to surrounding restaurants. So on a whim, we stopped in for lunch one Friday and we were pleasantly surprised. Service was on point! As soon as we entered, we were greeted warmly and promptly helped. It was fried fish friday (woohoo!) so we ordered the daily special of the fried fish and of course, I had to see what their bbq was all about with the Pit Master Trio - because sometimes you just gotta go big or go home. Everything was delicious - although I think I preferred the fried catfish over the bbq meats. I did appreciate how tender the ribs were, and you really didn't need much sauce on the meat for it to go down easy. I really enjoyed the sides, as well! That broccoli and cheese casserole (I believe that's what it was called...) was my favorite. Can't wait for the next Friday I have free to pop in for lunch!

Collard greens
Elaine T.

These three items cost $25.00. It seemed that the prices would allow for at least two servings in each of the three items. They only allowed a single serving. And one of the items had a lot of juice. I will not be making any additional purchases here. I could get these items AND a meat, bread, and drink at Magnolia Room Cafeteria for less. And the portions are much larger.

Reen K.

I was very disappointed about the food, on Friday 3/19. I have been bragging about the food in the past, order here a lot, but this time it didn't go well with me or my family. The fish I asked to be fried extra. It was, but the majority of the fish was bread. The ribs were super dry, the collard greens didn't have any seasoning, and the mac and cheese was dry and burned. The desserts were the only thing that was delicious. I had a large order, and again disappointed. I'll try again on another day. I know this isn't how this restaurant cook.

Stopped in for some banana pudding as this is a to go spot only. The banana pudding was delicious.

OMG! When I say I was impressed!! The customer service is outstanding from ALL of the staff. The were so welcoming. My friend kept raving about this place so we just had to go check it out! One thing that stood out to me was that the person in the from went above and beyond with customer service and the staff all said that you in unison to us when we left out of the restaurant. The place is very clean! All the staff had on mask, gloves and hairnets! We got drinks a meal and desert. The food was good. The dessert was delicious! We had the pineapple lemonade, it was good. All the food was fresh!

First of all let's get j to the packaging. 11/10. No mess at all whatsoever. The wings were great but those collards, macaroni, & yams????????? The stars of the show. Very hospitable and speedy service. I will be back again!

Two 2-Pc Catfish Meal (sides: Cajun corn, Stewed Tomatoes & Okra, Broccoli & Cheese Casserole & 6 Cheese Macaroni)
Fiona T.

My partner and I ordered for pickup tonight and overall, extremely impressed. If half stars were allowed, I believe a 4.5 would be more appropriate. The catfish was really the star of the meal, fresh, crispy, and well seasoned. Cornbread was to die for, wish we ordered a double order! My order consisted of the Cajun corn and the tomatoes & okra while my partner ordered the 6-cheese Mac and broccoli cheddar casserole. The only thing that truly held this place back from 5 stars were really mac and broccoli casserole: mac was a little dry (assuming because it's prepared in bulk and sitting) and broccoli in the casserole could've been fresher. Nonetheless, we did enjoy the meal very much overall. We will absolutely be back! Restaurant is in a mall with other restaurants in the Prep building, you can't miss it. We ordered online and food was ready in no more than 15 mins, hot. Staff went above + beyond. Last, do not sleep on the pineapple lemonade!!!

Their to-go container

Gave this a second chance and I will say the catfish was much better. Breaded and fried to perfection. I wasn't in the mood for Mac n cheese (or wasting $) so instead I got the fried cabbage and collards. The cabbage was delicious though- I loved it and the collards were not dry this time around and had a better overall flavor. I asked for them in a separate container like the owner suggested. Idk if I have bad luck with this place or what but my cornbread muffin, which I was looking forward to bc I loved it last time, wasn't fully baked (pic below). I didn't notice it til I got home ready to eat and was not driving all the way back to get another one. Finally, my curbside experience was MUCH better than last time. They answered the phone the first time I called and the lady brought out my food shortly after. It would be nice if they comped the items that were undercooked or mis-cooked bc I cant keep throwing away money (muffin and Mac n Cheese from last time)

Ask the Community - Southern Kitchen & Grill

Are y'all taking Thanksgiving orders. We will have 15 guests to feed and need cornbread dressing, mac and cheese, greens, sweet potato casserole, broccoli casserole,…

We appreciate you reaching out to us for possibly feeding you and your guests but we closed permanently earlier this year. Sorry. I hope you have a good Thanksgiving and find what your looking for. Stay blessed.

Do the greens have pork in them or turkey?

I think Turkey. Sorry it's been a while. I just remember picking the meat out because I'm pescatarian.

What are the vegan options available?

We don't have many as most our sides have either meat or dairy. With that said we have cabbage, stewed okra and tomatoes, rice, and potatoe salad. Working on adding more sides like corn and succotash.

Are the ribs pork or beef?

Pork

Turkey and dressing for $28??? Good luck with your prices. Some other items are a little more reasonable. I might try one of your other items. Pricey? I don't see Fried Chicken on the menu. Only wings?

Correct. We only sell whole fried chicken wings. Looking forward to serving you. Thanks

Why are their prices so high?

Our prices are based of the area we are located in plus the cost of the quality of food and labor cost. We think our prices are more than reasonable for the quality of food you get. We appreciate your consideration. Thanks

Coming into it, around early dinner time hour, it was fair to say a slow evening for a Saturday. This provided us a fair chance to be able to not feel rushed during this experience. Server and food runners were on point. Server knew the menu and what to suggest as popular meals and what his favorites were. He also informed us that food was made from scratch and the ribs were already sold out! Bummer as that would've been a go to choice! The restaurant it self seemed cleaned and a sleek look to it. We chose 2 fried chicken meals and steak and frite. These dishes were to brag about 100%, wish I could've met the head chef and supervisor on shift to let them how wonderful the food was and that the staff have great personality and professional! This chicken meals were beyond what could've fool me as a homemade chicken made by someone's grandma! The steak was cooked to perfection that could've melted in your mouth. The atmosphere felt like a casual new age, better, slightly more upscale and elegant version of Applebees, if that makes sense. Homey vibe but elegantly casual? Off rip I ordered a sweet tea which was phenomenal. It tasted like it has a slight peach undertone to it, and it was the right amount of sweet. I ordered the bacon wrapped shrimp as my appetizer and the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and brussels (I dont like coleslaw). I was told the bacon wrapped shrimp was a new menu item. For $19? They were cool. The fried chicken was really good. It was still steaming hot inside, when I took my first bite. The chicken was tender and had a good crunch to it. The brussels were okay. I typically like a more sweet glaze on my brussels but they did the job. I liked the mashed potatos, they were a little runny; the gravy made up for that though. I'm not a biscuit person but the biscuit that came with this meal was very soft, fluffy, moist, and had butter throughout. It was a bummer the only choices of hot sauce available were Tabasco and Cholula. I usually like Texas Pete, Crystal, or Louisiana hot sauce in my chicken. I WILL say, the monkey bread was SOOOOO good. So soft, warm, with apples and vanilla ice cream. If I knew it was this good I would have ordered 2 to go. Ultimately everything my was good, I had a great experience, and lots of leftovers.

I'm usually wary of ordering oysters during the hotter months, but the recent photos online looked promising, so I decided to order a dozen: half raw and half chargrilled. They were good! For our entrees, I ordered the LaGarde Smash Burger with Cajun fries, and my boyfriend had the Shrimp PoBoy with Cajun tots. The burger and PoBoy were just okay, but the sides were disappointing. The tots were essentially balls of grease. I know fried food is naturally greasy, but these tasted like straight oil with very little potato left inside, so they may have been overcooked. Of the two, the fries were on the better side. The service, however, was excellent. Everything came out quickly, and our server was friendly and attentive. After a few visits, I've tried a good variety of the menu: * **Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich:** This is served open-face and uses a mix of Sichuan and Calabrian chili. Just keep in mind that they don't adjust the heat level for this one. * **The Greens:** These are wonderful. They have a rich, savory pork flavor and are easily a must-order for me every single time. * **Shrimp and Grits:** This has a fantastic sauce that strikes the perfect balance--not too heavy, but not watery either. My only minor wish is that they'd add some andouille sausage to it (even if raised the price), but it's still a really well-executed dish. * **Southern Pho:** Really great and super hearty. It's a comforting bowl, though probably best enjoyed during the winter months. * **Drinks:** The cocktails are always creative and well-made, and they keep a really interesting beer list on hand too. ### 2. Our experience at this restaurant was overall very enjoyable. The only minor issue we encountered…read morewas that the lady taking our order seemed a little impatient while we were deciding what to order. We only spent about five minutes or less looking through the menu, but it felt as though she wasn't too appreciative of us taking our time. However, this did not significantly impact our experience. There were also a few mix-ups with our names. My name is Vu, but it was pronounced as "V.U.," and my friend's name, Alen, was called "Aden." These were small mistakes and certainly not something that affected our overall impression of the restaurant. On the positive side, the food came out surprisingly fast, which we really appreciated. I ordered the A1 Steakhouse Burger, and it tasted even better than I expected. The fries were perfectly cooked and seasoned with just the right amount of salt. Although the burger was noticeably smaller than what was shown in the promotional picture, the flavor definitely made up for it. I even added a little ketchup, which enhanced the taste even more. Despite the few minor imperfections in service, they do not affect my rating of this restaurant. The food was delicious, the service was quick, and I would still highly recommend giving this amazing burger a try.

It was only for their "classic" burgers--which I didn't find out until I showed up. The place already had a 90 health score, which made me hesitant. Seeing a visible, overflowing trash can under the sink to the right of the kitchen didn't exactly inspire confidence either. On the positive side, the woman at the counter was friendly. She asked for my name so they could call it when my order was ready. After 15 minutes (for just two burgers, in a not-busy restaurant), I finally had to ask about my food. The cook seemed confused, asked my name again, then looked around before finally finding my order. They never actually called my name, even though that's how the process was explained. The food itself was the biggest disappointment: I paid extra for bacon, but it wasn't added. The burger patty was pink, even though I asked for well done. The lettuce looked ancient, like it had been sitting out overnight. The burger was bland with no flavor whatsoever. The only redeeming quality was the mustard bourbon sauce, which paired decently with the paper-thin slice of pepper jack cheese (on my burger), though my fiancée's burger had the cheese completely forgotten. At the heart of every guy, there are four foods we know at our core--pizza, fries, chicken nuggets, and burgers. And this burger? Easily one of the most basic, uninspired ones I've ever had. The one thing I might go back for is the milkshakes--a few flavors caught my eye. But outside of that, I don't plan to return anytime soon. Even at the promo price, I left disappointed. If I had paid the full $22 (before tax), I would've been even more upset. For now, this is a 2-star experience at best.

I don't drink soda, and I'm well aware it's cheaper for them to give soda than another side dish, and yet the price for the platters are still the same. I'm just tired of everything getting both more expensive and worse quality everywhere, so it's a bummer. :( But still a good deal considering even McDonalds can be pricy these days.
