A overhyped pizza place in Florence... I wanted to come here because it was the most rated place for pizza in Florence but I was super disappointed. Neopolitan pizza is supposed to have a very airy dough that has a nice char. However, the pizza dough from gusta pizza was actually quite dense, and the sauce was minimal. I actually much more prefer the pizza from Sud in the Mercato Centrale. The service here was quite nice though. And its located next to a big Plaza where you can people watch while enjoying your pizza. It's also a cash only place so bring cash! Kind of sad that I wasted a meal here when I would have rather tried other pizza places but oh well. I would not recommend. read more

This pizza was AMAZING!!! When we got here the line was out the door turning the corner. There were so many students, couples, and families. The crust was so good and chewy. You cannot get anything like this in the states! I do recommend getting a pizza with veggies though because my friend who had ordered one with all meat cheese and cream found herself feeling a bit too heavy after a few bites. You need to have the heart shaped pizza! One of my favorite pizza shops when I studied abroad. They speak English, they super happy to have tourists try their delicious pizzas. It's a fast paced environment so don't have too many questions. It can get crowded at times but totally worth the wait. I'm a big fan of their cheese and salami (pepperoni) pizza. If you ask for pepperoni you might get roasted peppers on your pizza, In Italian that's what pepperoni is, salami is our idea of red meat slices. Not much seating available but I recommend getting a bottle of wine and drinking on the steps of a plaza nearby or even a park. This was the best pizza I have tried in Italy. period. As a study abroad student on a college budget, this place appealed to me for its cheap 7€ pizza, and it was worth SO much more! Got here while there was still a line out the door before they opened at 7pm, but once they opened the doors the line quickly moved inside as the pizza oven cooked up multiple pizzas in just minutes. Once inside, the experience was heightened by the aroma of fresh mozzarella and a wood burning oven. A small place, but a decent amount of seating. Try your best to get a seat, but in the worst case take your pizza to go and eat it along the river! *TIP* it's not on the menu, but order the PESTO PIZZA. they'll know what you want. Fresh pesto with mozzarella on your pizza here is TO DIE FOR and it's truly the only way. Also, you can ask them to make it into a heart shape, so your Instagram will look extra amazing. There were two things I was interested in in regards to food when I went to Italy: gelato and pizza! Real pizza, square and soft, by weight, and eaten with a fork and knife. I was excited to experience real Napoli pizza and Roman pizza, to dispel the rumors, and to taste for myself. I was very happy to find Gustapizza after a day at the Boboli Gardens. Gustapizza is worth walking over the bridge for. It's on a quiet street but all the locals and students seem to know about it. It's quite a scene once lunchtime hits, loud and bustling. The set up is simple. Order food and drink at the cashier, get a number, grab a seat, and when they call your number pick up your pizza at the counter. They do not speak English here so learn your numbers in Italian! I was lucky enough that the table next to me prodded me to pick up my pizza. Otherwise I'd have been lost. The people at Gustapizza are very nice though and the guys making the pizza are wise guys. I took their picture and they seized the moment by hugging and kissing. They know how to have fun. They also wear NY Yankees hats. How could I not be charmed? I brought two personal sized Napoli pizzas back to my table. Napoli (anchovies, tomato , mozzarella, capers, oregano, olive oil) Calabresi (spicy salami, tomato, basil, mozzarella) The pizzas cost about 7 euro each and are worth every euro! Gustapizza is one of my best food experiences in Florence. I can be picky about my Napoli pizza but this one was just perfect. The dough was soft but had that charred taste on some areas. I could rip it apart easily and eat each piece which had just the perfect amount of sauce on each bite. I loved the spicy salami. Anchovy pizza? Not so much. Way too fishy buy my mother absolutely adored it. We gobbled up our pizzas and walked away smitten. It's so easy to fall in love with Italy. Pizza would be a trap every time. We tried nearly every kind they have, and I don't know how they do it, but they are all perfection. Even their basic Marinara pizza is magic. This is a family owned and operated pizzeria that's run by the very Italian men whose cat calls you've preemptively braced yourself for as you prepared for your trip to Italy. Only these particular men happen to be serving up real Neapolitan style pizza right out of a legit wood fired oven. And if there's any situation where I can bear the weight of objectification, it's going to be for good food. The pizza chef, Salvatore, enjoys charming his female patrons, immediately whipping my order into a heart shape when I leaned over the counter to watch him expertly working the pizza dough. When I started taking photos, the cashier invited me back behind the counter to get a picture with Salvatore as other tourists...took photos of me getting my photo taken (as well as my two subsequent heart shaped pizzas :). Starting at 7 euro, the pizzas here are simple, authentic, and well, if you've never had Neapolitan pizza, then you'd have to let this one speak for itself. The thin crust is perfectly crisp on the outside, and chewy on the inside. The ingredients are fresh and straightforward. House wine is reasonably priced at 10 euro a bottle. Cash only. The place is pretty small, so if you're not in a group, you may have to make new friends if you'd like a seat. A great pizza spot that I would highly recommend to anyone that goes to Florence. You can tell that this place is definitely a hit with the younger crowd--it's open really late, and at those late hours, it's pretty much all young people who at least when I was there, all spoke good English. I'm assuming it may be due to the high concentration of hostels in the area so a lot of travelers seem to go there. Anyways, delicious pizza at a great price. My friend and I got the napoli--we decided to split it since we had already had an earlier dinner but heard that this was a must-come. The pizza was delicious and you can watch them make it. The guys who work there are also really fantastic---really funny guys who like to joke around and really seem to enjoy their job. It's that kind of prevalent attitude that really influences the culture and environment that one's dining in, and I love it. The pizza itself is definitely enough I think for two people to split. It's definitely a very thin pizza though. The place is on the small side, so I would recommend that you get the pizza and then head down a block and eat in the courtyard near the church. It is always full of friendly people, and the Margherita pizza is simply incredible and very reasonably priced. You enter from the side door and place your order, pay and are handed a number. The hype is real! This place is so good. I had read a blog about what to see in Florence on our one day there and this place was recommended. We weren't that hungry but I wanted to check it out. We arrived 5-10 minutes early and a line had formed around the corner already. We decided we better try it. The menu has only a half dozen pizzas to choose from and a daily special. You order and pay and then wait to be seated. It is packed so you end up sharing tables with other parties which is neat. Our pizza arrived within 5-10 minutes. We had the daily special - pesto and mozzarella. It was so tasty. The others at the table had ordered all different pizzas and they all looked amazing. The crust is doughy and soft. The flavour of the pesto was delicious. I only wish I was more hungry so we could try more! read more

Really cute heart-shaped pizza!! (Just make sure you say it when you order it!) I've tried several pizzas here, from the simple margerita (your basic pizza with tomato sauce and mozzarella 5 euros), Gustapizza (personal favorite of the three, it's an upgrate of the margherita with cherry tomatoes and rucola greens 7 euros), and Napoli (with anchovies--wayy too salty, didn't like it). But from the hype, the pizza didn't totally blow me away either. It was certainly better than any chain-pizzas in the US (like pizza hut or papa john's), it was delicious and straight out of the oven, and literally an amazing deal for the price, don't go expecting the best pizza in the world. Also, the pizza is pretty large enough that you can split it with a friend and have some room for gelato afterwards! The place is really crowded (even a line forming before its opening times), so it's really hard to get a seat inside. They boxes were pretty hot and we found a spot outside of Santa Trinita right around the corner. I opened my box and was immediately put off by the watery consistency of the toppings. Gross. The pizza was crispy on the bottom and the flavors were all there but it was just a messy, drippy thing to eat. What made this such an outstanding place was that we spent a day walking Florence, the city kept us hungry much of the day, and had us wait on an hour line to get a few slices of pizza. By the time we ate, you bet, it was absolutely delicious. The food was very good and everyone did seem to have a good time while there. ...but let's not carried away here. NY pizza is still at the top of the charts without the wait and tired lines of tourists (during the off season). These eateries are not looking to make you a welcome visitor. Prices were excellent (5-7 euros per pie), pizzas were generous portions - one would easily fill you up, but my husband and I were gluttons and shared three between the two of us. Get there when doors open at 11:30 to secure a good seat, but it's not the type of place where you hang out for a long Italian lunch. The ambiance is fun, with an almost constant line filled with locals, students, and tourists who you can rub elbows with. Then once you get to sit down the tabletops are decorated with notes from previous visitors. The workers are polite and helpful if you are too shy to ask a stranger in the aforementioned busy queue. And the pizza is tasty and affordable. I love the titular menu item with cherry tomatoes, arugula, and chunks of parmagiano reggiano--it hits so many fantastic flavor and texture points: fresh, bitter, sweet, nutty, crispy, cheesy, and... yummy. So why just 4 stars? After having the absolute best pizza in Florence (::cough:: Il Pizzaiolo ::cough::), Gusta Pizza's pizza is close but not quite as good--the toppings, especially salame picante in the Calabrese, could be a little more plentiful and the sauce a little more flavorful. It could be a little more clear as to how the seating arrangement works because it can be a little overwhelming your first time there, especially if you don't speak the language (for the record, you order and pay for your food at the counter first, get your own drinks from the refrigerators near the back of the dining room, and then you can find a place to sit). But in the end, Gusta Pizza is a fantastic pizzeria. For sure it's the best in the Oltrarno. If it was in any other city, even another city in Italy, it would be the best pizzeria in town. I cannot claim that this is the best in town because I have only gone to a couple of pizza joints in Florence, but I will say that their pizza was absolutely amazing. I will also say that I don't think I would risk going anywhere else because sometimes you end up with a shitty pizza and it sucks. If you only have so much time while you are in my favorite city, and want to eat beautiful Neapolitan pizza, hit this joint up. Not only is it amazing, it also is incredibly cheep and makes you question why you have to pay 16 bucks for one at home.
