Got the number off a bulletin board at Woodlands... that should have told me a lot, but in today's gig-economy I feel it is important to support those with the gumption to self-start. So thinking this person wanted / needed jobs was my first mistake. I found a six foot leather sofa off of NextDoor and purchased it. When I got ahold of Alex to talk about the five (5) mile one item move, he balked at a flight of stairs, the size of the sofa, the fact that the sofa was leather and would need to be wrapped -a service he clearly "offers" on his website- and while parking was available on the street, he wanted to be right at the door, which was tight for a box truck therefore required a dozen extra steps once out of the apartment. However, once at my place on ground floor, no stairs, back entrance through wide patio door into my living room. All is stated on the website as a do-able one-item move. But I guess Alex just did not feel like it was an "easy" enough move, complaining at every turn in the discussion. Really what move is easy? Suddenly moving my newly purchased sofa became enormously complicated, regrettable and frustrating. From what I can gather here on Yelp, "Guy w a Truck" charges a pretty penny, the same price you'd pay for a licensed, bonded and insured mover to do the job... something to consider when they scuff up walls, floors, or break items. I'm so angry that I wasted the time in an attempt to set this sofa move up but very thankful that I found out before I wasted money too. Of course I did my research and skimmed reviews, the stellar one are loaded on the top. While I was first thrown off by the 4 stars, after this last conversation I began digging through Yelp, I see I am not alone, however, still puzzled by the extra stars - guess those are only the "easy" jobs. I was researching services that haul away furniture. Within 30 mins. the table was gone. Starting from the beginning: I came across this business on Craig's List. I called and reached one of the employees. Left a message and within mins., the owner, Alex, returned the call. He happened to be in the neighborhood and offered to stop by and give an estimate. When he arrived with one of his helpers, Alex was friendly and professional. The price he quoted was reasonable. Alex asked me to think it over, as they were heading to lunch. No pressure from him, but I pressured him to take the table with him. Alex left the decision to his employee, which was impressive. They were very careful, navigating the table through tight spaces. It's really convenient to know "a guy with a truck". Especially when you are at OSH the week before it is closing and want to buy an impulse patio set that is 50% off. I had a desk that he took all the way into San Rafael from Novato to a consignment store, only to have them reject it. He turned around and took it to the Novato dump (along with a sofa that we had given him) and did not charge me anything. He said "Don't worry about it". I wanted to compensate him for having to drive to San Rafael and then back to Novato but he insisted that we were square. The only issue is that he appears to run his business by texting and when I asked for an email with his quote and the agreed upon pick up time he told me not to worry, it was on his calendar. Moving is a sad process. It's a time of change and a time for reflection. I needed to move back to the East Bay and having been a resident of the city for 5 years, I have amassed quite an enormous amount of junk. A heavy black TV stand, large flat screen TV's, a queen size bed, dressers with cavernous drawers that provide room for at least 4 weeks of underwear (take that laundry mats! I don't need your love for at least a month!), and bookshelves that hold hundreds of books... This geek guy is hardly made for manual labor, so I decided to call the big guns. I am also a lagger when it comes to packing up. I called up Alex (owner) on a Saturday and arranged for a move from SF to El Cerrito for Sunday. I must have been the luckiest person in the world, because Alex said he could do it. And within 2 hours. What?! Really? Alex is a man of his word. He came, shrink wrapped my stuff, and conquered. Within 30 minutes he and his staff had vacated my lonely room and piled all of the stuff into his truck. A cool hour later, and he was dropping off everything at my new residence. Professional, courteous, and friendly, I learned how Alex got into this business after owning a top level concours auto detailing shop. He took his experience with him and made sure that even though I wasn't about to enter a Pebble Beach event car show, I got treated with the same respect that he would give a vintage Ferrari owner. "I was paid to deliver a sofa, and that's what I did" sofa needs to be picked up again, which he had offered to do. After agreeing to pick it up "in 40 minutes" called back to say "I'm gonna take a pass on picking up the sofa". Apparently, it was just to irritating for him to get the sofa back down the stairs he brought them up. Left me completely in a lurch. High school Neighbor came with a buddy and got the sofa down the stairs in 5 minutes and were great. Alex could have chosen to help me out (and not for free) and had a devoted client who moves a lot of stuff, but I'm throwing his contact info out and hiring my teenagers. 100% Unreliable. Everyone knows that moving is a well orchestrated, coordinated effort and that little kinks can cause massive headaches. The curve ball Alex just threw me is not a little kink - it's huge and totally screws my plans. Alex bagged on me less than 24 hours before he was supposed to show up. Claims he hasn't been able to finish a job this afternoon and needs to finish tomorrow - truck broke down, etc. He was spewing excuses. More importantly, the only reason I know that he's bagging is that I called him to confirm. He showed up early and moved everything from my old place into my new place within 2.5 hours. He brings his truck, two moving guys and himself - and his prices are still low ($65 an hour). "Guy with a Truck" arrived, moved my old dresser out of an upstairs bedroom and then hauled my new, and very heavy, console upstairs. Alex and his assistant delivered a sofa and table from Petaluma to SF. Price was reasonable and less than the moving companies I called. Communication via emails and texts were easy and turnaround time was good. They shrink wrapped the sofa and padded the table, dealt with north bay traffic, and were friendly. I was not sure exactly what to expect after reading the yelp reviews, but my experience was good. Granted, this was a fairly straight-forward project, but this experience satisfied the criteria of a good price, good treatment of my furniture, and positive communication. I find it hard to believe that Alex is getting 5 stars reviews all around. I feel strongly about this bad experience to write about it - I don't write lots of negative reviews at all but Alex and his guys are by far the worse movers we've ever used. It's ok if you don't really care about your belongings and you have all day to wait for him and you don't care if he hits and damages your walls. First all, all I had delivered was a couch. We live in a high-rise so there are tons of rules for reserving the loading dock, putting down deposit, insurance, etc. I spoke with Alex about these regulations and he kept complaining about them over the phone to me, I wanted to get off the phone but he kept complaining. VERY unprofessional. He didn't have to provide insurance, the deposit, or reserve the dock, I do all that stuff. But because I needed to schedule it and told him that we only had 4 hour window to deliver the couch, he was complaining. Then, on the day of delivery, he was supposed to arrive at 2-3 pm, calls that he's going to be nearly 2 hours late because he's out in the East Bay and it's raining. Since I'd only reserved the loading dock until 4 pm, I asked him to get here before 4 pm otherwise we may need to reschedule, and he agrees that he'll make it before 4 pm. Then 4 pm and 5 pm goes by, no call from him. I give him a call after 5 pm and he (without any apology whatsoever or any concern for my time) and says that he's "on his way" to pick up the couch and should be here at 5:35 pm. Shows up at 6 pm - FOUR HOURS LATER THAN ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED and 2 HOURS LATER THAN HIS NEW ETA. Then, proceeds to move the couch in a very rough manner - nearly hitting our sprinklers several times if my husband didn't let out a cry "watch out" several times. It's like they haven't done this before. Our previous couch was delivered by 1 guy (not the 3 that Alex brought) and the couch was moved in very smoothly, no scratched, dents, or even come close to hitting the sprinklers. Came very close to damaging our hallway and unit. And probably would've if we didn't have 3-4 people watching them like a hawk (we were having a dinner party - which was interrupted by this delivery because he was so late). Sorry, but overall bad bad bad. Unprofessional attitude. No concern for your time. 4 hours late and still took my money. I feel like I should've gotten an apology or a discount or something. Very disappointing. And on top of it all - NOT CHEAP! You'd think a "guy with a truck" with this casual attitude would be cheaper. *May* have been fine if it was cheaper, if he had a better attitude, or he was apologetic for being so late. But nope, none of those happened. I think movers are fine until something goes wrong. And with so many things that could go wrong, why risk it with someone who is unprofessional? read more

Alex (aka Guy with a Truck) is awesome! responsive, quick, honest and polite. I needed to clean out my parents' basement and get rid of their old fridge, oven, desk, plants, pots, drywall, cardboard, birdcage, elephant, rhino, hippopotamus... (okay the last three weren't really included). I was going to rent a uhaul truck, move all this stuff myself into the truck, and drive across town to the dump, until I read the horrendous reviews about the uhaul service at the Bryant street branch. Luckily, I found guy with a truck through yelp. Alex quoted me a good price plus the dump fees over the phone and by followup email, and promptly showed up on Saturday with two other movers. They hauled everything into their 10 foot truck within 1 hour and were off, leaving the garage basement completely junk free and breathable. I would definitely hire Alex for any spring cleaning. Save yourself the headache of waiting in line at Uhaul on a Sat and driving to Monster Park dump, and call Alex. Note : he cannot haul away paint cans, but he recommended dropping those off at your nearest Ace hardware. read more
