Unfortunately, my partner and I had an awful experience with Darcy Quinn and A and P Moving. Despite paying almost $7,000, our belongings were damaged and dropped in the middle of the street. The driver, who was elderly and not capable of moving heavy boxes, did not bring a single person to assist with the drop-off. Instead, I was forced to drag a king mattress, 40+ moving boxes, a 60-inch TV, fragile artwork, and a 70-inch solid wood desk up my driveway without any assistance at 7 AM. Even better, the enormous moving truck blocked my neighbors from exiting our cul-de-sac as they desperately tried to get to work on time. When I spoke to Darcy Quinn about the mishap, she apologized profusely and said what occurred was completely unacceptable and unanticipated. But after speaking with "customer service" she offered us just $100, (1.5% of our total moving cost) for the "inconvenience." According to Darcy and A and P, unloading thousands of pounds of furniture from a truck into your home is worth less than 1.5% of your move. If you disagree, and think unloading your furniture is a big reason you're spending several thousand dollars for other people to do exactly that, get another cheaper option and save yourself thousands of dollars. Further, the items were not properly stored and transported. I guess one benefit of doing the move myself is that I got to see inside the messy, haphazard truck. Our expensive mattress arrived with a major splotch of black mold and mildew (see below). It was in perfect condition, as evidenced by the inventory sheet when it was packed. The only thing between it and the floor of the moving truck was a thin sheet of plastic. My solid wood desk (also in perfect condition on the inventory sheet) arrived with a chunk missing. It was laid bare on the wall with the protective blankets tangled below. Finally, my $1k+ steelcase chair was entirely missing. Finally, Darcy, the website, and emails provided by A and P and Bekins, indicated that the "driver and his crew will prepare your house by protecting the floors and doorways" and assist with unloading items into your home. That's a direct quote from their "drop off" FAQ. The driver did not step one foot inside my garage, home, or even my driveway. To suddenly not offer assistance at the last minute without explanation is clearly contrary to their assurances and advertising. All that said, find another moving company and representative that cares about your experience and belongings, or just move it yourself. But whatever you do, don't use Darcy Quinn/A and P, or you'll somehow end up paying $7k to move every single thing you own into your new home by yourself. read more

While the other 2 quotes were much lower, I was not confident that they were accurate. (One of the other companies actually had a BBB complaint about an underestimate before and unexpected charges after moving.) This cross-country move for me is a two part process - the local company to pack and load up and then an affiliate driver/team to unpack on the other side. What I can say about A&P Bekins in Novato is that they are very well organized, very fair in their pricing, thorough in follow up and preparation for the move, and incredibly efficient on move day! Darcy Q. was great to work with during the original estimating process and preparation. She helped to ease my concerns and stress, and was very helpful in strategizing the timing of the pickup. On move day, Korey, Rudy & Angel were an amazing and efficient packing team! I watched them take time and care with my furniture, and they double checked that my boxes were sturdy and taped well. I loved getting an accurate bid, having them save us time and money by personally dropping off odd size boxes and packing materials, as well as allowing us to return the unused materials for credit. Check Consumer Affairs. I have never worked with a more shady company than Bekins and A and P Moving. They came out and gave us an estimate for our move out of state and for using their storage services for 3 months. Mr. Kerr underestimated the weight by half! So they kept our belongings in their storage facility for months without ever giving us the courtesy of a phone call to let us know that the cost of our move would double! Additionally, A and P Moving sold us an insurance package and told us we could cancel it anytime before the moving truck left their warehouse in Novato, which we did. Once the truck arrived at our new home, the driver was told not to unload until we paid for the insurance, another $600! The driver also told us that the insurance was cancelled prior to him leaving the warehouse and he didn't know why he was being told not to unload. I contacted Bekins directly for an explanation as to how a bid could be off by half and they refused to acknowledge the unethical business practices used by A and P Moving. Ultimately Bekins just stopped responding after my first response to their lack of explanation. I have a hard time believing that this was an accident. To not inform the customer of an error this large is unacceptable. We should have went with the company that was a little more pricey. We would have saved thousands. Comment from A and P moving is laughable and absolutely not true. They never contacted me in the days following the move regarding this. Our client had a complicated and fairly long distance move that involved many fragile antiques and collectibles to be transported from Mill Valley to Southern California. So, my Dad and I have used these guys more than several times over the years - We have been mostly pretty happy with their services. We really like the guys running the show. Unfortunately, this last time I used them, it was to move out of state - to Texas. I have these family heirlooms - antiques - handed down through 4 generations now, that were damaged. I bought a $100,000.00 insurance policy - cost me $495.00 for no deductible. More than $7000.00 for the move. For each of the items that were damaged, their own employees packed these items. When they arrived damaged, I took pictures of everything - even the inexperienced guys they had on the Texas end that moved my things from the big rig to my home. I filed a claim and guess what? They won't cover the bigger things due to "rigors of transport". Their own employees packed these items - if there was rigors of transport "issues", since they're the experts - they should have said something right? What a croc, what a rip off! I asked for help with this from the guys in Novato and at first it seemed they were going to help, but in the end, they referred me to the national company. LETS BE CLEAR - DO NOT USE THEM TO MOVE ACROSS COUNTRY UNLESS YOUR THINGS REALLY DON'T HAVE ANY VALUE! I contacted an attorney who told me because everything to fix would be less than $10,000.00 I have to go to small claims court! read more

You would be crazy to ever hire this moving company. They showed up to my apartment, offered a bid for $7k, and then showed up on the other end in Ohio with a new bill for $9k. The best part about this is that they held my stuff as ransom until I paid at least $8,250k. Their guys literally sat in front of my house with my stuff until I paid the increased amount. This was despite asking them to move less stuff because we sold a bunch of it on craigslist after we received their bid. The moving guys themselves were extremely hard working, polite, and nice - but of course they were contractors. It was the A&P home office in Novato that was dishonest. The worst part about this was that they failed to return my calls when I tried to understand why they were changing the price on me. It took me three weeks to get someone on the phone and when I finally did they had no explanation on why the price was different. read more

I just used their on site shredding services and I am very happy with them. They arrived within the time window that they gave us all the way out in Point Reyes. Jose, the technician, was very professional and did much of the loading work. He also showed me where I can watch the files getting shredded I had about 4 bins worth of banker boxes prepared and we had them done in less than 30 minutes. Not everything, however, made its way to destination with some small things being left behind - ran out of space in the truck - and some things gone missing (not so good). A&P helped us with a local move yesterday and the four person team was amazing. They showed up right on time at 8am with great 'let's get it done' attitudes, and sometimes literally whistling while they worked. They loaded up in an hour and off we went 10 minutes down the street to our new apartment. The unloading was more difficult not only because of the stairs but they needed to hoist our couch up to the second floor back deck so it would fit in the door. Great teamwork and problem solving got the couch where it needed to be. All in all there was no damage to any of our belongings or to the apartment building. Their estimate was done based only on time, we packed everything ourselves, and it came in $800 under. We are very happy and thoroughly enjoyed working with this team. We used A&P, a part of Wheaton Worldwide/Bekins, in our move from CA to AZ and every step of the move was a disaster. Bekins couldn't find a driver; our goods left CA after the guaranteed delivery date. In AZ, there was no crew to unload, so it took 4 days rather than one. Bekins wouldn't pay the claim for the full delay, only until the truck showed up even though our bed wasn't unpacked. Substantial damage and items missing which again they wouldn't pay in full, claiming they had no responsibility for things that didn't arrive, even though we paid them to pack. Shredding service: you know those guys will make money even if they shredded for free. They sell this paper. Called them to replace my broken box. They said that I need to return it all together unless I sign up for monthly service. I said let me finish my box, as I have done in the last two years, and then you can cancel my service. The same guy who sold me on my current arrangement told me he never made the commitment and challenged me to produce the contract. A lair, going back on his commitment for the sake of $20-30 or something, kept me on the phone bulling me to shred earlier than I was supposed to. Good bye Novato AP Moving! read more

We hired them to move our stuff out of storage into our new home. The head mover had a bad attitude to begin with -- he continually grumbled about the number of boxes we had, even though he wasn't actually doing the heavy lifting-- his crew was. When they were just about done with the move he tried lifting our dining table by himself and dropped it. The leg broke. One would think we would have received a call from their main office apologizing but instead we got a three month runaround as we tried to get reimbursement for a new table. At one point, A&P sent a company out to see if the table could be repaired. (It could not.) Months later, A&P's adjuster finally came up with an arbitrary number (not including the cost of shipping for a new table and disposing of the broken table) and told us it was non-negotiable. We are without a table. I understand mistakes happen and things get broken, but the response of their management was unforgivable. They should stick to shredding. read more

A&P moved me from Petaluma to San Francisco, and i am delighted with how well everything went, especially since my San Francisco apartment was what they call a "long carry" with a small elevator to the third floor at the end of the carry. Even with that, the charge came in under the quote! The men were blazingly efficient and the move went down with no problems. I recommend them highly. read more

WARNING - DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. I contracted this moving company to move my belongings into my new home in another part of the Bay Area, and the movers, two men named Francisco and John, stole ALL of my gold jewelry, family heirlooms, and other priceless ornaments from my desk and dresser drawers. When I confronted the manager, he simply denied any culpability and refused to investigate the issue; and instead I was forced to file a police report. It was clearly a case of theft, since I packed up these items the very same day, and the movers were the only ones to handle them between my former house and my new home. Recently, in the process of unpacking, I have also discovered that two large suitcases that were filled with my clothes, personal items, and housewares are also missing. I am currently proceeding with a lawsuit since this is an egregious violation, a clear case of guilt, and the company has flatly refused to take any responsibility; but I want everyone else to know what my experience was as well. Please exercise the utmost caution in who you trust to help you move! I wish I had been less trusting. And don't use this company! read more

Don't ever use Bekins! I have used a moving company many times over the years. My experience with Bekins was beyond terrible. Upon arrival, and after paying over $17,000 for the move, I had 5 pieces of furniture damaged and missing items including 4 boxes. I had paid an extra $400 for the "For All It's Worth Full Replacement Value Protection Plan". Not to worry right? Wrong! Bekins admits they damaged and lost items but refuse to pay replacement cost and only offer a small token of the value of my loss. Why? because they say they don't know for sure if what I say I packed in the boxes was really in the boxes. In other words, it's a dish pack, but were there really dishes in the pack since I packed them? I was never told, nor is it written anywhere in the brochure, that if I pack my own boxes this coverage plan does not apply. So, maybe my claims contact, Mary Varner, is being overzealous to meet some company goal. I write to the CEO, Mark Kirschner and cc all execs down the line including A. J. Schneider and Ron Borokwski kindly asking them to look into my claim. I did not get a response from any of them!
