Three companies were asked to give me bids for replacement of my 25+ yr old system. Another bidder did not bring any diagnostic equipment, but was very ready to come back to repair or replace the ac and would at that time inspect the furnace. His bid for replacing the ac did not even mention the need for permits. And then, there's Straight Shooter. They were already my service company and at check up time, Rich was concerned about the refrigerant level. He asked to come back on a warmer day to be sure the cold had not given a false reading. Rich also suggested it was time to find out if the aging system needed replacement due to some others signs. I asked him to arrange that, so Scott came the same day Rich returned. At that time, a crack was found in the furnace heat exchanger. Also, it was determined the ac refrigerant loss was so significant, repair would be too costly, especially for the ac's age. Scott kindly spent enough time with me explaining options that I had clarity about them. Just a few days later Eric, Dillon and Forest installed a heat pump that does both jobs! I am well pleased. George accepted my job that was a bit different than your typical home heating/AC installation. I have a 5 story Bed & Breakfast that needed a combination of new mini-split installs combined with older mini-split relocations. He agreed to take the job. He also made a great effort to work with me and the schedule I had as a 5 room B&B. He allowed the business to continue and did a great job allowing us to stay open the majority of the time, while he did the installs. Near the end of the job George and I had some challenges agreeing on the original contract. We were both not agreeing with each other as to what the initial expectations were. In the end, he finished the job to the best of his abilities and left without his final payment. There was a bit of upset on both sides of this at that point. Four of the five systems worked well, but I had to bring in another company to get the last one working. I'm sure my ego prevented me from calling on George the way we left things. Several months later after the initial upset, I offered George the difference of the remaining bill I owed for the initial job minus the cost to get the 5th mini-split working with the other company. He politely declined and offered me well wishes and the best of luck. This was despite our disagreement and him not getting his last payment. This review is more about how George handles problems than how he installs heating/AC. From the number of positive reviews it's easy to see he and his crew are very good at what they do. From my perspective, they did the best they could with my job. It was not fully what I expected, but I'm sure he could say the same about me and my expectations. In the end, I received a job that I was happy to pay the price I paid for it. I would have been upset if I had to pay full price, but George accepted that and moved on as well. If there was anything I learned from the situation and I hope George did too was to clearly outline the contract for what the expectations were as that was a little unclear on both of our sides. I wish George and GVK the best of luck and would refer them to anyone for a standard residential job. I would also recommend them for a commercial job having learned from our experience. It's not often you end up parting ways the way we did and still have good feelings for that company. read more

I called George from GVK Mechanics to come to my house for a quote to install a whole house air conditioner/furnace. He arrived on time and proceeded to go thru all that would be involved. Checked out the whole house, the outside power panel, got his ladder and went up into the low attic we have. He discussed the whole procedure for installation, and recommended the 3 ton Trane unit and furnace. He gave me an on site estimate, but later sent an on line estimate that was even better. I had two previous quotes from others that were less, but complications arose so Very glad that we went with George. His crew arrived(3) and took a couple of hours to size up the best approach to cutting an access to the attic. Then it was very busy, professional, clean work that was done, They completed the job in two full days instead of 3 as estimated, including taking out the old wall heaters (2), and patching the holes and removing the gas lines and capping the pipes. The unit was running by noon of the second day, as they continued to cut accesses for registers, and connecting the vent hoses. They finished up by 6PM of day two. George came by as were finishing to check all aspects of the job, and almost everything was exceptional. Just had a room power outage, which upon checking was a loose wire connection in power panel. 10 minutes later all was well. I can't say enough about the way George and his 3 workers, took care of us. I would Highly recommend their services to any one needing A/C services, and have already. They always had the floors and ceiling covered when cutting holes and walking thru the house. I will continue to call George from GVK Mechanics if ever needed again. We were in need of replacing our home's HVAC system and was on a mission to find a company who will work with us. I contacted GVK based on Yelp reviews. I gave George a specific date and time to that we can meet. He was very accommodating and agreed to meet at the stated date/time. On that day, he called us in advance to say that he will be a little earlier to our appointment and asked if it was okay. That's plus one point. He arrived at our house, noticed that we had a sign that we ask our guests to take off their shoes at the door and he took off his shoes without being asked. That's plus two points; showing respect for our home. He did a thorough inspection of our attic and the current equipment then came back and gave us a brief history of his company, his training, and certification. He then thoroughly explained what system we need and gave us a mid-range proposal. In the end, we decided to go with George because he was honest and fair in his pricing. That's plus three points. On the day of the job, his men showed up first and started working right on time. A couple of hours later, George showed up to supervised AND did some of the work himself. I asked George if he can cap off the electrical line we had hanging outside when we removed our old awning and he had happily agreed to do that for us. He did it without charging us. That's plus four points. When they finished the job, he came back later to inspect his men's work, caught some minor things that wasn't done, and had his men come back to complete the install. That's plus five points. The bottom line is that we are very happy with this company but without a doubt George is the star of the show. We highly recommend GVK Heating and Air for HVAC replacement. read more

I came across George's company last year when we had an AC disaster leak at home (in the middle of August btw) which caused us to file an insurance claim for damage caused by the leak. At the time, I had a home warranty company who I reached out to so that they could send an HVAC contractor to assess and fix the problem. Unfortunately, both companies sent on behalf of the home warranty were terrible to say the least. So I decided to find a more reliable and knowledgeable company on my own and thankfully found George at GVK Mechanics Services. He came in and diagnosed our problem immediately, and had it repaired /cleaned same day. I was beyond satisfied with his services and since I work in the real estate field I kept his contact info for my clients. Fast forward to this week....I reached out to GVK on behalf of some clients who were asked to replace their AC condenser pump. Turns out the pump did not need to get replaced, but that the leak was simply caused by dirty air filters. Ruben was sent out this time and he was just as knowledgeable and honest as George. They had the issue fixed, and for less than what the other estimate was. In addition, both technicians were very professional and knowledgeable, and very responsive to calls and texts. Our experience with George and his crew was, by a mile, the best home improvement/service we have ever had! The estimate appointment was professional, friendly, efficient and very informative. George made very practical and honest recommendations in picking the proper units for our home and suggested a few very inexpensive improvements that have made all the difference. GVK replaced our ac and furnace within a week of the original estimate. We received four quotes for very similar products and service and George's quote was far below the others and included upgrades that were not included in any of the other quotes. GVK's reviews (on multiple websites) are consistently outstanding because of the honest & excellent work they do. GVK was recommended to me by my neighbor for new heating and air conditioning installation. Even so, I still got 5 other estimates. I decided to go with George of GVK for several reasons. His estimate was one of the lowest. Although his is a small company, he has been doing this work for many years . His ratings are impeccable. But more than the low estimate and the quality of his product, I liked his enthusiasm, and his pride in his excellent ratings which he truly deserves. He explained everything to me and my husband in a completely understandable way, gave us several options, and then his recommendations. The installation, which took the whole day, was quiet, steady and professional by George and his team. I thought this was going to be a stressful day, but they made it relatively painless. They cleaned up beautifully, and even offered to paint the new outside aluminum cover they installed over the wiring, free of charge. Other companies said they would charge $250.00 to do this. I'm very happy with my new furnace and air conditioner. It's quiet and efficient and everything George said it would be. I cannot recommend GVK highly enough. George from GVK was awesome! I needed someone to come take a look at the heater of one of the properties we are getting ready to put on the market. I had called about a dozen or so companies and either they were booked solid for about 2 weeks or were charging a crazy amount of money to just come look at the machine, not even repair it. I called GVK and George got back to me the same day to schedule a time to come look at the heater, at reasonable price too. He spent about 30 min to an hour trying to figure out what needed to be done to get it up and running. George was super good about explaining everything to me as he went. He determined that some rewiring needed to be done and set me up with another appointment the very next day to do the needed repairs. The next day George came prepared with all the materials needed to fix the heater and was done within a half an hour. I really needed the repairs done asap and very much appreciated George working within my time schedule. George was professional, trustworthy and just an all around nice guy. I am a real customer and this really happened. Around 11AM on another of our HOT days in San Diego, My air conditioner stopped working. I turned to YELP for a recommendation and called GVK. I reached an answering machine as I had anticipated and I described my situation. I expected to wait a long time for a call back but NOT SO. 10 minutes later they called and had me describe the symptoms again. They then said "we're on our way, be there in 20 minutes". 15 minutes later they are at my door. 20 minutes after that the a/c was running again ( a bad capacitor had to be replaced). They checked the freon levels too just to be sure we were running a peak capacity). So, my unit broke at 11 and was back working before noon. That's outstanding! Their repair was reasonably priced. They were professions and they communicated with me well about the long term prognosis of my unit. Why do I give this company five stars? Because Yelp won't let me give them 10. People are rightfully skeptical of glowing reviews, but these guys earn them. Unlike most reviewers, we didn't call GVK to repair existing HVAC, but to install a new system. George does the work himself with his father and an assistant. Their prices are extremely competitive, but that's not what earns them top ratings from clients like me. With George, you're not conducting a transaction. You're forming a relationship. Goes above and beyond for his customers, unasked. Takes pride not only in his work, but in how he treats people -- and how often do you see THAT anymore? Very knowledgeable, very friendly, very patient. Explains everything before, during and after installation. When you deal with GVK, you're dealing with people of both expertise and integrity. My AC was installed this Tuesday (August 7, 2018). Having taken 7 bids I choose GVK because George, the owner, was quite polite and professional. His cost to install was so reasonable that I did not ask for the 5% senior discount. He had recently bent over backwards to help my sister with the cost of her new AC that I wanted to show my appreciation to him for being so helpful to her. Today, August 8th, the system shut down and I was unable to determine why. George was quite responsive to helping me today with the problem in a 102 heat wave. He sent his crew of 3 capable team members who installed the AC originally down from their job in Escondido to my home in El Cajon. They determined that the fuses in my breaker box just happen the day after the installation to 'wear out'. Completely satisfied with the repair work done on my HVAC system. Competitively priced, but more important was the attention to details and the high level of professionalism. My problem was tricky, but GVK (and his assistant) was quick to analyze what the root cause was and take care of it--AND took care of incidental findings for FREE. No hidden costs, no hype, no pressure. To put it simply, he is a true HVAC engineer, not just a moonlighting repairman (which is honest work, but the skill set is, admittedly, not the same). After running my ac, it leaked water. Called several ac companies. One said the evaporator coil was bad. The other said the txv valve needed replacing. I decided to get another opinion and called GVK. I am so glad that I did. George came out to look at my unit. He discovered the insulation had come loose and that was causing my coil to freeze. He was extremely neat and polite. He has a great work ethic. He could easily have told me it was the coil or the valve as the others did but he was honest and didn't try to sell me something I didn't need. We needed a new heater so I called this company and left a message. George called me back right away and set up an appointment. When he came to give me an estimate he did a great job explaining everything and his price was very reasonable, so we went with him. He installed a new heater a few days later and also wrapped our old ducts in our garage to make them look nicer. His dad worked with him on the install, and they did a fantastic job. Afterwards he showed me how to use the new programmable control, George is a great communicator and really makes sure you understand everything. In the last three years, George and his crew have replaced my AC condenser, an air conditioner for a separate cottage, and today my central heater. I could not recommend him more highly. He is honest, intelligent, capable, responsible, and charges very fair prices. He comes when he says he will, and does what he promises. Do not worry about calling George....He really is the real deal! I get nervous having to deal with things that I am not familiar with and calling for help, but George put me at ease instantly. We always get a quick response after a call or text to George...even during the busy summer seasons. After performing diagnostics on our HVAC system, George and his colleagues gave us candid advice regarding what needed to be repaired and what still has plenty of life left, even though it was aging equipment. I did end up finding out post install that the AC cut-off box switch was failing and needed replacement. The heater had a manufacturing error where they had to reduce a part twice. Overall. Rudy also updated the ducting for the existing swamp cooler and worked closely with our roofer to ensure everything was sealed correctly during an active reroof. He and his crew returned multiple times throughout the process, staying hands-on and involved at every stage to make sure the work was done right. Since then, I've brought Rudy onto a residential project in San Marcos, where he's replacing an outdated AC and furnace with a new Bryant system at a very competitive price. The error was officially documented during our home sale when the unit failed inspection. The HOA's new preferred HVAC vendor confirmed the mismatch, leaving us to deal with the fallout during escrow. The Customer Service Experience: Dishonesty: When presented with a professional load calculation, management dismissed it, claiming I had simply "plugged it into the internet" rather than acknowledging the data from a licensed contractor. Zero Accountability: Management refused a refund, hiding behind "you signed the contract" to avoid taking responsibility for their own sizing error. The Financial Impact: This negligence cost over $8,000 for the initial mismatched installation, plus several thousand more for a correct replacement required to close the sale. Since he didn't have a new replacement part on hand, he installed a good used part to get the system running again. What really impressed me was his integrity. He didn't charge me anything, not even the service call fee, because the repair was so minor. I insisted on paying him for his time, but he refused.
