First time visiting to Gyp's Tavern for lunch today. Christina was working the bar and gave us the story of Gyp and Babe Ruth, nice photo tribute on display in the back room. The food truck today was Smokin' Mo's BBQ which provided excellent chicken sandwich, pulled pork, both with sides of Mac n cheese, coleslaw and cornbread. Yes, we ate to our fill! I had this placed booked mark for some time now. Finally made my way here on a sunny afternoon this past summer. Once you enter, you can place your food/drink order at the bar. If you order food, they give you a buzzer so you can pickup your food from the takeout window outside. Outdoor dining is first come, first seated. Ended up taking seats with the water view. Ended up ordering wings ($14) which was crispy and tasty. For my main, got the bacon cheeseburger ($13.50) which comes with fries, was solid as well. The views and good food were such a nice vibe. I get it's a dive bar but a margarita shouldn't be only tequila and lemon juice with salt thrown in. Kitchen was also closed at 9 pm on a Saturday night, I get it's a bar but come on it's a weekend. Not to mention the bartenders were incredibly rude. Only reason worth going to this dump is cause Babe Ruth did. read more

I'm a first timer here and stopped in on a whim as i was driving past. Initial impression was a total dive bar. Walked in right at 11am, the inside was clean and very rustic. Had nice AC though. Outside seating is plentiful and well kept. They have some very cool fire pits available. The lake views are absolutely incredible! Ordered a burger, fries and mushrooms. The burger was cooked perfectly to a medium (some pink on inside). Fries were exactly what i would expect, hot and crunchy. The mushrooms were amazing! Love the horseradish sauce they were served with. I actually added some to my burger I definitely recommend this place! Woman owned and operated too! read more

Came here on a Monday with three friends. On Saturday, we stopped at Log Tavern brewery heading to Lake Wallenpaupack to celebrate a milestone birthday of a friend of ours who actually sells forklifts for a living. Log Tavern was a good find too, and you should also go there. But anyhow we had a super cute dog with us and so a woman came over and told us how cute he was, and how smart Australian Shepherds are. It was clear she had great taste, and she mentioned that she tended bar nearby. We went on to our lake rental and met our other friends. It was a fun weekend! The birthday boy wanted to rent pontoon boats and so we begrudgingly agreed even though the forecast was menacing to say the least. We managed to avoid the t storms and enjoyed a frigid dip and sunshine out in the lake. After cookouts, a sing-along with acoustic guitar and an 11 month old, deep fried Cornish hens, and plenty of late nights, it was time to go home. Monday morning we went for a last hike and it was the perfect amount of exertion. On our way out of town we stopped at Gyp's. The reviews seems like just what we were looking for. The owner wiped the most recent downpour off a patio table for us, we grabbed amazing tacos from the truck out front (food trucks on mondays), took our beer and cider out by the lake and later fed the fish. Gyp's is one of those local watering holes that just happen to be "in" Stokes State Forrest! They have a wide range of alcoholic beverages including the seasonal pumpkin cider on tap that was refreshing! There is is also a bar menu with some classic choices and highlights that included on my visit Chili and Goulash. I am a vegetarian, so I didn't get those, but had a bag of Aunt Vickie's crips( potato chips) with my cider. As they say, "location, location, location" is a big pull, and the best part of Gyp's is walking around the back where you can prop yourself up at the edge of the South Kittatinny Lake!!! I've passed this place a 1000 times. I dropped in over the weekend and of course because of COVID, there was no seating at the bar, I didn't see anyone eating so I don't know if they are doing food but I had an ice cold beer and an amazing view of the lake. I bookmarked this awesome spot after reading about it on NJ.com. So happy we made the journey and so sad it is this far away. I totally want to hike nearby more often so we can come back! Loved the view of the lake and the relaxed atmosphere here. On our visit there were three Appalachian Trail hikers at the bar. Note to those hikers, leave your pack out back, come in and order your beer and connect to the free WiFi. We both had a Fat Tire draft and settled into an Adirondack chair along the lake. We watched some fish do what fish do and relaxed. We did have a grilled cheese which was good but took forever to come out. Seems like Gyp's ran out of bread, no biggie as we had it on a burger roll instead like at Jack Brown's Beer and Burger Joint in Roanoke, VA. We loved it! The husband had to drag me out and $20 for 4 drafts and 2 grilled cheeses makes this place amazing! Can't wait to return! read more

This is the best local dive bar in Sussex County. This place is very special and has everything you want in a dive bar. It is a quaint, small log cabin feel. There is nothing fancy about this bar, but that's the appeal. The place is located just off the Appalachian Trail (AT) and has a beautiful small lake (Kittitinay Lake) right behind the bar you can sit by and enjoy the scenery when the weather is nice. The bar food here is surprisingly good and a welcome respite for hikers weary from hiking the Appalachian Trail. I know and love the place because I grew up in the local area and it was always a fun place to go. On weekends it's also a popular motorcycle bar for riders exploring Sunrise Mountain and the local roads. Gyp's has been around for quite a long time. How long ago you ask? Well Babe Ruth used to visit the place all the time and hang out with the original owner "Gyp". They used to go hunting together and there a tons of pictures adorning the walls to prove it. There is a lot to love about this small, dive bar. And this place has a lot of great memories for me. I would suggest this place to anyone who loves a great, friendly dive bar with great bar food and a rich history. read more

I have been coming up this area for the last 20 years, yesterdays services was terrible. It all started after the new switch change around 5 I believe . 3 budweisers, 1 ipa.. total came too 25. We asked the bartender to explain the check and she said "that's just how much it is " and walked away. Stayed to one side of the bar with her friends , I called for her numerous times for quarters until I finally had to walk over to her. No hospitality. read more

Inexpensive place to get food and drink. Not an expansive menu. But good enough. I've had the bratwurst, mushroom onion Swiss burger, and the onion rings. Bratwurst was really good and the onion rings were absolutely EXCELLENT. They have a crispy exterior that gives the ring a good crunch and snap. The outdoor seating is also excellent. If there were a bar in every trail town (or approximation of one) like Gyp's Tavern, long distance hiking might be twice as popular. While this bar literally steps (and not that many as far as hikers are concerned) definitely caters to locals, it is about as hiker friendly as any place I encountered while hiking in New Jersey and New York recently. From offering cheap hamburgers (which omnivorous hikers crave I have been told) to selling single serving hiker calorie staples like Doritos and Cliff Bars for $1.00 a piece, the hungry hiker can fulfill many of their needs here. If these needs include just throwing their feet up on a patio and looking at the mountains they just descended from into Culver's Gap along a beautiful lake, this is met too. I loved the cool breeze off the lake while I drank a beer and ate some Old Bay fries (certainly a taste of home that I was not expecting) and a grilled cheese sandwich. The whole thing cost just a bit over $10.00. I was tempted to stay for another one but as it was, I think I injured my ankle climbing up the hill back out of town. But I can't blame the bar for that. Drinking and hiking is a personal choice. While I tend to stop in town more than the average hiker and probably smell not quite as bad, they had no trouble with me ordering my food inside. And the locals asked all sorts of questions, positive ones, about the hiking experience. I'm about to head back up this way with a car to complete a couple of sections I missed for various reasons so Gyp's may very well get my business again soon. It should be a destination for all hikers in the area for sure! read more

Stopped with the family after a day exploring Stokes. Gyp's is a legend and now we know why. The food is typical but tasty bar fare, the service was fantastic and during Covid they seem to really have cleaning and distancing worked out. The outdoor dining is literally right on the waters of stunning and private Kittatinny Lake. The owner brought some stale bread out for our kids to feed the fish while we waited for our order. Well-run place that is family-friendly and in a beautiful setting. Only down side is the noise of Route 206 but certainly doesn't ruin the fun. We will be back! read more

Came here after visiting the Sussex County Sunflower Maze nearby. Has both indoor & outdoor seating. Enjoy beautiful views of the lake! They were more than happy to make me a BLT even though it was not in menu. Sweet potato fries are delish. However, the service was poor. The servers did not clear previous customers plates from our table (gross) and never checked on us. If not for the service I would have given this place 5 stars. read more

The owner contacted me about my previous review and stated the experience I had was not a normal one and the offending waitress has been let go. It is likely a decent place to eat, but here is my ONE experience with Gyp's: I hiked the entire Appalachian Trail in 2012, came into town and wanted a meal, ordered a burger and a drink and ended up being basically yelled at and told to leave. The locals next to me quoted my server as being a "bitch" to me and we're in awe themselves. One of them felt so bad he ended up giving me a ride to JUMBOLAND down the street, which is a fantastic place to go with great food and great service. read more

Me and a few buddies came here after a nice night of off-roading. We felt welcome as they let us in and we shot a few games of pool. Service was incredible, food was great, it wasn't expensive and there's a nice spot outside to gaze upon the lake, fish, and sit by a fire. Needless to say I'm a Gyp for life. Total townie bar. Loved every minute of it. Old school pics on the wall from god knows when apparently Babe Ruth frequented this spot and there is proof on the wall. Seriously cheap by NYC standards, attentive bartender (only one but that worked fine) quite the variety of people. I don't know why all the hate..but I've never had a bad experience here unless there's some new management that took over. Me and my friends usually go for free pool on Saturday nights when I'm in town and everyone is pretty friendly. The back of the bar is right on Kittatinny Lake which makes for a great view if you're playing horseshoes. Babe Ruth used to pass through on his hunting excursions (I uploaded some photos).
