***1 1/2 stars*** It's pretty rare for me to go below two stars, but we literally couldn't find any redeeming qualities other than a kid-friendly chalkboard off to the side. Rough, rough lunch and I'm picking the places going forward. I came here with my top-tier chum and #1 honorary young pup chum for a midday meal yesterday. This was an unfortunate recommendation by my chum, but in her defense, the biggest selling point was that they had a young pup section of the menu (which many of my suggestions didn't). This may have been a sign that it's time for the young pup to just order off adult menus going forward. This is probably a weird time of year to be over here anyway; this restaurant recently moved next to the baseball stadium, and December just isn't the greatest page on the calendar for America's pastime so it feels a little wasteland-ish right now. There were also a few random amusement park rides that we had to walk around to access the entrance (apparently more for a nighttime winter festival of sorts?) so the vibes were a little off to start. The interior was fine though - there's an interesting looking bar off to the left and high ceilings, so it feels more spacious than it actually is, given the overall square footage you're dealing with. I also enjoyed the cow decor, though I might be missing the joke with some of the cow/pig hybrid animals on display. My chum remarked that it seemed like the menu was designed by someone who'd never actually tasted the food, and certainly wasn't the same person who cooked it. Definitely a possibility, but my general impression was that this is ostensibly a family restaurant (remember the chalkboard?) with a menu only targeting young female adults, from the bar food to the cocktails. It's very strange. I wish there was a nicer way to say it, but the cocktails were terrible. I had their version of an Old Fashioned, which had coffee in it. Just did not go well together at all; there's a reason why Irish coffee with Bailey's was invented - not every dark spirit is going to work with coffee. I find it hard to believe this was taste-tested before being added to the menu. Never again. I felt worse for my chum though, who got a holiday twist on a margarita with cranberry. It was so beyond tart I could barely swallow it and it honestly tasted like cough medicine. In a quasi-NSFW comment, my chum mentioned that this drink might be helpful for a UTI, but alas, we were at a restaurant, not a pharmacy. At the very least, they need to retrain their bartenders on basic portions of a cocktail, but when the ingredients clash, that's a management issue. We got the Cow Wedgies to share as an app - basically, flattened mozzy sticks. I like the flattened concept but these were pretty bad. I'm assuming the issue here is they were in the deep fryer for too long because they had pockets of grease that would pop when you bit into them, almost like a pimple. One of those pockets exploded and stained the front of my hoodie. Not great - an unappetizing appetizer. The impression I got was that The Barnyard were pretty aggressively touting the chicken/waffles section of the menu. I went with the Winner Winner, which was another example of not understanding basic palates and taste profiles. This is a savory item - it has chicken, mashed potatoes and this gravy/corn concoction. Inexplicably, they then added this weird tangy sauce that would be better served on a bang bang shrimp app that completely ruined the dish. It's such an unforced error I don't understand how it happened. It's going to come as no surprise, but the service matched the overall quality of the meal. There were very few customers on the premises and yet our waitress was mostly MIA. She never came by to check on us after serving the food, despite making multiple trips to a table near us to inefficiently clear it practically one item at a time. It's very hard to give constructive feedback when an experience is this bad, but to me it starts at the very beginning - make sure the items on your menu taste good and that your staff is properly trained on basic hospitality concepts. The Kingdom of Sussex deserves a lot better than this. read more

Stopped by after leaving the Sussex county fairgrounds for lunch. The menu seemed very straight forward and known for their burgers. You order at the counter and are given a placard for your table and your food is then brought to you. The biggest complaint from our party would be all drinks are for purchase not even tap water is given. Which is fine we had our own water. We ordered a side of waffle fries and the sloppy tots for the table. The side of waffle fries could've definitely been larger. The sloppy tots were delicious as the tots were well done and topped deliciously with beer cheese, bbq sauce, pork, and sour cream. They just needed a little salt. Everyone ordered a burger and they were good just super greasy. I ordered the pub burger in which the Irish cheese was definitely an acquired taste but the pretzel bun was delicious. The ya filthy animal burger I think would've been between with the coleslaw on the side as it made a mushy consistency. The stampede burger and bacon mushroom Swiss were both good. I will say for $15 per burger a little ridiculous it doesn't come with any side and just a pickle. The inside has almost a diner vibe to it but all the staff were friendly and polite. read more

This was an absolutely expectational experience. Saw a comedy show here and it was incredible. Every one of the comics was super funny! Plus, the food was outstanding--everyone in our group loved all the appetizers and entrees they ordered. So delicious. And on top of that the owners and staff are warm, friendly, and on top of everything. Highly highly recommend! Worth going out of your way to come here!!! read more

Not great service at their new location. We've had 4 different servers since they've opened up and all seem to have been on their first shift.. frazzled, orders wrong or extremely slow service refilling drinks not checking up on us to make sure everything is right after another server drops the plate etc. and the food isn't quite the same quality anymore. Cant really blame it on acclimating to a new location anymore. Lol A lot of menu changes and just doesn't taste like it used to. They were stellar back at their old location in Branchville and the system worked so why change it? I guess we will stop visiting and hit up one of the other 2-3 quick service burger and fries joints that don't cost me a tip for subpar service. I'm more than happy to pay and order at a register to save my money. Wish they would've stayed in Branchville and kept their old system as we loved it and were there at least once a week! We were in branchville and saw this place had good reviews so we stopped in for lunch. The place is really cute and very clean. You order at the counter and they bring the food out to you. Good menu of burgers, sandwiches, salads, etc. We got the Texas burger, cauliflower wings, caesar salad and fries and all were great. Service was super fast and everything came out hot and perfectly done. We were super impressed for a little place out in the middle of nowhere. Would definitely come back here again if in the area! read more

Updated Review for our 10/29/22 Visit! The Barnyard continues to receive a 5 Star Yelp Review! We came up to the area for the Honey and Garlic Festival. After the festival, we were hungry. We decided to drive to The Barnyard. The Barnyard can do do no wrong. The Food and service continues to be excellent! Ordering is done at the counter. The order line moved very quickly. They'll bring out your food. Just wanted to say, the staff is small, but are fast. We ordered the Texas burger and Ahmboorger. Both burgers were so delicious. Best of all, a yummy pickle comes with it. This is my second time eating the Ahmboorger. It's Fabulicious. The Brie makes it so yummy! The Barnyard's ambience is so cool. The have comedic pictures of cattle inside the restaurant. There's counter, indoor and outdoor seating. According to their website, the restaurant provides food truck and catering services. I didn't see anything about DoorDash delivering. You can order online and pickup. The Barnyard does have parking right in front. read more

So I decided to try again because I got desperate by lack of choices in the area. I went with the burger, which everyone kept raving about at work. I will say they give generous portions. The packaging makes food a bit soggy but I was staying nearby so I didn't have that issue. I ordered a medium burger and it was well done. The patty has this sort of metallic taste to it. It's actually inedible, which surprised me because I thought nothing could be worse than the sticky fritters (almost sickeningly sweet). The sweet potato fries were too burnt for my taste, and the taste was muted as a result. All in all, I wouldn't recommend and I really did want to like this place. Finding a good restaurant in this area is like a needle in a haystack. read more

The Barnyard is the new restaurant from the owners of More Thyme Cafe (previously located on 565, a.k.a. the old Quiche Shop). After the leasing became difficult, the owners moved into the heart of Branchville and opened up the Barnyard. To start - more people need to stop in and review this place! The menu has been revamped for the local Branchville crowd, and boy did they hit a homerun here! If you come away with anything from this review, let it be this: pulled pork quesadillas. Stop reading right now and go order them. Some of the most heavenly food I have ever consumed, paired with a horseradish-based sauce that really goes nicely with the sweetness and crispiness of the quesadilla. I recently became addicted to this item, and I do not regret it. The veggie burger receives the highest recommendation from my wife (a vegetarian) who often tries them at different restaurants. She mentioned the other day that this is on par with her favorite NJ veggie burger (Grain House). The fries are also unusually excellent. The coffee is also really good, which is hard to find locally without independent cafes in the area. Everything we've tried fits into the category of high quality comfort food that really sets the senses ablaze. Paul, Marissa and the gang have outdone themselves. It's also a really good location, right next to Broad Street Books, Family Drug, the new cake pop bar (which needs to add some hours of operation), China One, etc. Also very close to The Amber Dragon crystal shop. Happy to see the town of Branchville attracting some excellent businesses. Barnyard also participates in town events like the acclaimed Halloween festivities. 5 stars. read more

My mom and I were in the neighborhood and were absolutely famished. I took a look at The Barnyard's reviews and they were ALL positive so we decided to give it a try and boy, were we glad we did. The interior is super casual but very clean and there are a few tables for outdoor dining as well. The staff was sweet, helpful and friendly. Our food was delicious. We got a side of Mac and Cheese with bread crumbs on top which, although it was a small portion, did not disappoint. And I'm glad it was small bc I was stuffed after my burger. I got the Stampede burger and was VERY satisfied. Every bite was bursting with flavor and texture. My mom ordered the Yard burger and loved it. They also had Coca Cola in a glass bottle which makes my heart happy. In conclusion, The Barnyard rocks. Go eat there. read more

The organic coffee sign is what brought me in the first time and now it is my go to place. Small town charm, very friendly people and amazing burgers and chicken sandwiches....and everything else. I literally scour the tristate area looking for great burgers and this place, as well as Build a Burger in Tarrytown takes the prize. And their waffle fries are killer good too......and the smoked gouda mac and cheese.......I could go on but you get the idea. The food is simply delicious. I am told the salads are also great but that will have to wait till 2022 when the diet kicks in. Heading there for lunch today! You need to try this place. read more

Ugh, we had such high hopes for this place. Brought our kids in after a day of apple picking nearby and checking out the Branchville scarecrows. Decided against our usual spots to give this place a try for the first time. Looked great for families with young kids. When we arrived, there were no signs regarding how things worked so we stood in front of the register for about 5 minutes without being acknowledged or handed menus before my husband walked outside and just grabbed paper menus. We chose a seat and the first biggest red flag happened. Our kids needed diaper changes and there was NO Changing table in the bathroom! How? There were 12+ young kids and babies in the restaurant at the time, and no changing table...in a family restaurant?? Come on. We weren't the only ones looking for one either. We had to take turns taking our babies out to the car to change them outside. Ridiculous. The second problem was when the food came out....the empanadas (NOT cheap!) Came out almost completely Black. Our jaws both dropped when they set the plate down- we couldn't believe they were actually serving something that looked like that to us. Tried to cut into them and couldn't even get a knife to cut them. They were Rock solid. Showed the girl working that they were hard as rock and even banged them against the plate to show her we couldn't even bite them or cut them, and she went to the back of the restaurant to discuss, and came back and told us it was normal!!! We literally couldn't even bite them! When we finally got a corner of, the filling was so burnt and gross we both spit it out. They didn't offer to take them off the bill, cook us new ones..nothing! If that is considered normal food for a restaurant to be serving, you have much larger problems. The whole meal was honestly very underwhelming. The kids meal came with TWO little chicken fingers. Also not cheap at all. Shocked they couldn't give at least 3 for the price! The rest of the food was just very under average and disappointing. But the two main issues ruined the whole meal for us. When we left, after spending almost 80 Dollars on that meal! We were not offered any discount for the food we couldn't eat, and never had even been given our drinks, so we had to wait to find someone and ask for our drinks that we were never even given, and take them with us when we left, which at that point we didn't even need or want them anymore. All so ridiculous. I understand these are very young girls working here, and probably have very little training, but there were Several adults working towards the back of the restaurant that should be taking control of things, and also making sure things are running properly. We spent $80 for a meal we could barely eat, my kids left hungry and had to eat other food when we got home, and we left very upset. We have been sitting on this review for the past week because we are still POed about the experience. I'm sorry, but you need to do better. Your restaurant has potential, but you need to step up and fix some things and not serve food burnt to a crisp and tell customers its your norm. Serving food like this, if nothing else, especially at such expensive prices, is unacceptable. read more
