I was looking for a new place to try close to home since I've vowed never to eat at Portillos again and I ended up at Gyros Express. I have been back a couple of times already. The place is so very clean -- and the owners and staff are so friendly and considerate. The food is really good and it prepared one order at a time. The lemon egg rice soup is amazing and the chicken items are very good. I am not Greek, and I don't eat Lamb. I don't eat a lot of meats, so I will always go with chicken here. What stands out for me is the love and care that goes into the business owner's relationships with customers. They go out of their way to provide the best service and even will give free baklava on occasion. I do think the prices are a little high but given the entire experience I don't mind. I'd rather spend $12 here for soup and a sandwich than go to any other fast food place where you are just a number. Well Done Gyros Express! read more

I remember going to this place with my dad when I was a kid. Man was it the best! Those big portions and great flavor at a reasonable price. My wife and I had our first child this last week and we wanted some gyros from a place with hand-cut fries so I suggested Gyros Express. It was a little bit of a drive from where we live now, but I assured her it was well worth it. I went to the place and it hadn't changed much; just a few more parking spaces then it used to have. The folks who owned the place when I was a kid still run it so it was nice seeing familiar faces. Two chicken gyro "meals" without pitas and a medium Greek salad: $32.xx. W....t.....f!??!? I had to ask the price two more times because I was confounded. Anyway, I returned home to enjoy the food, especially the hand cut fries, but there were NO HAND CUT FRIES!!!!! I called them in a huff and the chicken gyros sandwich "meal" that I had tried to order on the phone came with NO FRIES. $32.xx and NO FRIES. Apparently I was supposed to "ask for the fries and upgrade to the 'gyros platter'". W...t....f??!!!? I apologized to my hungry wife and ran over to Frankys on lake street and bought two fries and honey mustard for under 5 bucks, albeit, without the handcuttedness that we craved (Nana's has since closed). Back to the food. It was "ok". You can see the photo of the chicken gyros that I posted. It was about 6 strips of chicken colored sizzleen that had a better taste than any of the other chicken gyros in the area, but with about half the meat. The salad was your typical, run of the mill Greek salad. I probably won't ever buy from these guys again unless they DRASTICALLY reduce their prices. Like Governor Pritzger taking out toilets in his mansion to save taxes, Guros express might need to remove the "golden toilet seats" to help lower their overhead. This simply cannot continue. People that earn $100/day should be able to afford a salad and gyro meat, about $6-$10 would be fair. Best Gyro in town! I don't know if I'm partial because this was probably the first gyro I ever had and was my families go to growing up but I stand by that statement. I hadn't been here in years and just went for a gyro and fries (probably the only things I have had here) and it was just as I remembered. I mean all of it. Even the guy behind the counter was the same. The price is a little higher than what you typically see but I think it's worth it quality wise plus they give you a ton of food. Pretty Good. Gyros sandwich was standard fare, ample meat, the usual pita, low on the sauce volume scale, high on the flavor and satisfaction scale. Fries were tasty (yet not hot due to Delivery latency...more of a compliment since they tasted great luke warm, I imagine they're delicious hot). Baklava was a somewhat undersized portion, but very enjoyable and marginally better and certainly more buttery than the custom variety. Would try again for sure. Just wish the restaurant was available through multiple delivery providers, as the only one available happened to charge an exorbitant fee and delivery, which would truly be the only factor preventing a repeat experience. read more

The enticing smell of the slow turning gyro meat is what you come in for. For the gyro sandwich, extra tender, thinly sliced gyro meat is generously piled into soft pita bread. Underneath, a couple of thinly shaved tomato slices are accompanied by white onion that has been julienned, along with the final layer of tangy tzatziki sauce. Everything on the gyro sandwich is so well proportioned, it's one of the best you will ever have. Period. And if the sandwich wasn't enough, their crinkled fries are crispy and have just enough salt to keep your taste buds happily craving more. I recently discovered their homemade baklava - lightly pillowed with the sweetness of honey and crispiness of the filo dough, really made me appreciate the taste of their families tradition. I've been going to this restaurant for 20 years. Of course, the gyros are fantastic. A dinner size portion can easily feed 2 people! They have recently added a junior gyros sandwich which is just the perfect size for one. My absolute most favorite entree is their baby back ribs. Their ribs are the standard to which I judge all other restaurant's ribs and I haven't found any other restaurant who's ribs are better. Also recommended are their fries, hamburgers and chicken on pita. Beer is served. This is a great restaurant to go to for any lunch or dinner. read more

The food is great, and all of the employees are super friendly...they were greeting other customers by name, which is impressive! The food tastes fantastic! They have some of the tastiest gyros and Greek-style kebobs that I've ever had and it's always very fresh and flavorful. It also doesn't hurt that it's at the end of the building that I work in now. Very dangerous! The family who runs it is so friendly and, while some of the items are pricier than I'd like, they don't go out of their way to recommend the most expensive thing on the menu when asked for some help picking. The price also isn't so bad if you split a meal with a friend because they give you a mound of food. I've had the kebob meal and the gyros. The kebabs are so tender and will probably be my new go-to for lunch, though I don't think I can make it a regular habit since 3 Skewers, Greek Fries with Feta, and a medium Cherry Coke were over $15. The gyros plate is also very good but it's a whole lot of fries and filler and not as much meat as I've gotten elsewhere. Still, the meat is legit! My husband and I went to rival highschools. Ever since we met, we've given each other some ribbing about whose highschool/town does XYZ better. Since DAY 1, he's been saying that Gyros Express has much better gyros than my hometown favorite. I would never give in or agree (I don't admit defeat easily) and since he does not read my reviews, I hope that my secret is safe when I say...Gyros Express is hands down, so much better than my favorite hometown gyros joint. I've only had the gyros here, and it's consistently good. The meat is well seasoned and tender. The pita is always soft and fresh. The Tzatziki sauce is very flavorful and a bit tangy and garlicky. Service is always friendly. Why I can't give them 5 stars is because of the price. It's kind of pricey for a local gyros joint. Yes, I do think you should pay a bit more for the best, but sometimes I feel so "nickel and dimed" by this place. They charge for every little extra--but you don't get much for that extra. For example, The extra tzatziki sauce was so tiny and was barely enough for the gyros. Sometimes I'm surprised we don't get charged for napkins. I am a frequent customer at Gyros Express and have never once been disappointed. I come here about once a week, and everything I have ever tried has been outstanding. My family and boyfriend's family eats here as well, and we always love it. My personal favorites are the Greek salad, avgolemono soup, Jr. gyro, chicken gyro pita, oven roasted potatoes, and of course...BBQ SAUCE! You'd never know it on the surface, but honestly, Gyros Express HANDS DOWN has the absolute BEST BBQ sauce I've ever had in my entire life. Honestly. And the best avgolemono soup I've ever had. And the best Greek dressing I've ever had. And the best tzatziki sauce I've ever had. And the best gyro meat I've ever had. Can you tell why I come here so often? The food here is simply amazing. I have eaten at many fast food gyro places. This one tops pretty much all of the ones I've been to. When you order a gyro, they serve you meat that's fresh and juicy - not the hard dried out stuff that's been spinning on the spit for hours. The fries are some of the best you'll ever have as they are hand cut and still have the skins on them. They don't serve the rinky dink short hard fries that most places serve. You might pay a little more for some of the items on their menu, but I'll take quality over quantity any day. I tried the ribeye steak sandwich. Cooked to order! Might I add...it is IMMACULATELY clean every time I dine here. What sets it apart from every other gyros joint are 3 things: - Fresh Cut Fries - Thick cut crispy gyros - Did I mention how clean it is? What other fast food joint takes so much pride in the cleanliness of their joint. Especially with all the in and out customers. Lastly I dream of their ribs. That's right...fantasies. Question: Isn't it true that Gyro shops almost always get their meat racks from similar vendors like Kronos, Olympia or Grecian Delight (there are a couple others). Also, aren't the Gyros ovens usually from the same makers? Star-Max, Autodoner etc. Then why in the hell is this place so expensive? Yeah the Pita's are good and warm, the feta is good, the fries are tasty too but the same holds true with Billy's down the street and for much cheaper. Are their meat racks, which are purchased from the same place as other Gyro shops, an extra tasty, premium variety created specifically for Gyro Express? Are their Star-Max ovens imbued with a special magic that cooks these commonly obtainable Gyro meat racks with a flavor like no other? Now maybe I am off here because I have only had the Gyro and after having to sell a kidney to afford it, I haven't been back. I am a Gyros connoisseur but this place was a total walk out. $9.99 for a gyros, fries and drink (which has $1 refills) is ridiculous. I tried to gauge if the price was due to a ridiculous over serving of meat. Perhaps, but the sandwich I saw was the same size or smaller then what I'm used to. Perhaps it was the $5 junior gyros but even then, it would have been smaller then a $4.00-$4.25 gyros anywhere else. $3.99 for a pizza puff?!? Are you kidding? Since the sandwiches aren't pictured to demonstrate size, I'll assume the price is based on their #1 rating. I ate here many years ago and I can't see how the taste has changed since their #1 rating. Back then it was a gyros like any other. In fact, I didn't care for the sauce back then which I believe is their own recipe. Per Marie N.'s comment. I used to go to this place all the time, I would mostly get the Gyro combo "the #1". For the longest time this combo was $10, for modest (at best) portions that is quite expensive. I would still go though simply because it was very good and it was still only a few dollars more than comparable things in the area. Now the problem is that sometime within the last 4-5 months they jacked up the price of the Gyro combo to $11. I'm sorry, but that's just not called for. The quality level between this and his competitors is not so vast that he can get away with charging $4-$5 more than everyone else. Is the Gyro better at Gyro Express? Yes, but it's not so much better that you need to waste that much money. Let me put it this way; save that 4-5 bucks, go to another Gyro joint twice for the price this place charges... I can't rate the actual gyro sandwich personally as I only took girlspawn and her boyfriend here and did not actually order anything myself. All of these ingredients and preparation are top notch and not really comparable to what you would get at the majority of places that you would compare this to. I have no problem paying a couple extra bucks if the food is this good. the owners took incredibly good care of us. Service and cleanliness was incredible. Will be back and would recommend to anyone who would listen. Saganaki was out of this world. The pork shish kabob was best I've had. Greek salad was as good as anything I've had in Greece. First time going to this place and I've got to say I'm not all that impressed, which really sucks bc I had such high hopes for this place from what I'd heard about it. I ordered a gyro combo with fries and a drink. This cost me just under $13!!! I find it really hard to believe that charging THAT high of a price for even the best carry out food is all due to inflation. I've been to plenty of other gyro places in the area that cost a lot lower and with the same or better quality food. Outrageous pricing aside, was my gyro tasty? Yes, it was everything you expect out of a good gyro place. Flavorful & and just a little bit crunchy on the meat wrapped in a soft pita. The sandwich was a good size & served with a slightly smaller than an average side of fresh cut fries. Were they good? Yes I'll give them that one too. The fries are fresh and hot, they could've used a little salt but overall were still tasty. The counter staff were very friendly and quick, no problems there either. Overall this place is a slightly better than average gyro place, their food IS good. But would I call this the best gyro in dupage? Absolutely not. The best in villa park? Possible. But given how much they charge for what is really just a solid gyro place, nothing amazing or exceptional; is downright crazy. Used to be my go to for Gyros in DuPage County......NEVER AGAIN! Go to grab a bite to eat and show up at 8:10 while they close at 8:30. Before even ordering rude lady tells me that I can only get it to go. So I place my order of Gyro, Fry and drink with extra pita. She says ok, so you get a #1 gyro special and this will cost you......wait for it.......$16.25!!! Wait.....what? A gyro special for $16.25. They might as well fill out loan applications here. What kind of scam is this place? Anyways get home to enjoy my gourmet meal. Open up the gyro ready to dive in and find they have given me the ends of all of their tomatoes. Not to mention the fries were half a bag and were cold. I am beyond disappointed at the quality of food and service that I would NEVER go here again and, in fact, will tell all I can to steer away from this place.
