I have always loved Hondas and I'm on my 4th one. My car was making noise on the left tire and I brought it into them. Chris and Gary were awesome! They had my car for the day and kept me updated that I needed a new front bearing, brake rotor, ball joint And 3 lug nuts. My car was approaching 150 k and I do not want another Honda civic. It was unsafe to drive and they fixed my car up! 2nd time I went to them I needed an overhaul for 150K service and they accomplished everything with great knowledge, detail and was priced lower than a Honda dealership. I went a 3rd time when my radiator cap came off and I needed a new thermostat gasket and radiator cap. They fixed it and were quick and I felt safe to drive my Honda again! 4th time I just went in for my oil change and transmission fluid flush and am happy they are my mechanics!!! Next oil change is 155k and I will definemtly only go back to H-Car garage! Chris and Gary are brothers and have been there since 1986 and know Hondas inside and out! Hands down, these guys (Gary & Chris) are the most knowledgeable and honest guys I've dealt with in auto service. I liked them from the initial maintenance they performed on my Civic due to the fair price and quality of work. But they really impressed me when my vehicle later developed an unrelated issue that turned out to be covered under a Honda extended warranty service bulletin that I had not received. Instead of charging me for the repair, they directed me to the dealer and offered to explain to the dealer via phone the results of their investigation which identified the problem. I love these guys. I've been taking my Acura, and in the past my Honda, there for years. It's so nice when you have a mechanic you can trust. These guys were raised working on Hondas (their dad was a Honda mechanic for 30 years). This is their specialty. They use genuine Honda parts. It's basically like going to the dealership but at half the price. I highly, highly recommend these guys for anyone with a Honda. Not a place I would recommend to a friend. Owner/employee was not friendly and kinda cocky! Had an issue with my air vents that needed to be replaced. Parts were already ordered and just needed to bring the car in, but like many of us... I work and could not drop it off in the AM without having someone drive me to work before 8AM. USUALLY, the people at most shops are willing to give you a ride.. Not this place. So I tried to schedule a time after work 2pm.. He didn't have anything scheduled as I could see on his desk and he said that it wouldn't work because it may take time ... It's an air vent for christ sake!! I later went back on his time and it took all of two minutes to replace the vents! Not the best price and not the best service! read more

Tail-light randomly went off in the middle of the night on my Acura, and after 10 mins of google searching, found out the culprit was a broken "pedal stopper pad." Called the shop the next morning, and they checked to see if they had the part in stock and quoted me $10 for it with free installation. SCORE!! I arrived to the shop earlier that afternoon and it is really as simple as they come. The garage can accommodate 2 cars comfortably and there is no waiting room or soda/snack machine - though that just means less cost to the customer, which i'm all for. Overall, the service they provided was cheap, efficient, and fast, I was in and out within 15 minutes. Definitely stop by H-Car Garage first before succumbing to expensive dealership repairs!! read more

I can't believe that this place exists. Chris and Gary are amazing guys, and I am so thankful that my wife said that we had to go there. Two weeks ago, I took a Honda Pilot in for service at Pacific Honda for an oil change. Well, about $150 later (yes, I got upsold on some things I probably didn't need), they were trying to sell me on $450 for a new piece of glass for my moonroof with a poorly fitting piece of liner, and $700 for new brakes. The sales manager (the regular sales guy wasn't that pushy) was advocating for both, but especially the brakes. I was made to feel that I was endangering my family by not immediately doing the brakes. So, I took the Pilot to H-Car this morning, and they fixed the glass for $60 (took elbow grease and silicone), and they found that the front brakes are probably down to 10% left and the rear brakes are fine. The bottom line is that I did the front brakes for $165. And, now I have piece of mind that I've found a place that I can trust. Look, dealerships exist to sell and service cars. But independents do a great job of keeping them honest. Frankly, I can't understand why anyone would give these guys less than 5 stars. They are honest, friend, and they did a great job. If you have a Honda, and you need service, please call them. You will not be disappointed. read more

Brought my 07 honda civic here for the first time yesterday and was really impressed. If you live in the pb area and own a honda, you know that you only have a couple of long distance choices at which to service your car if you want factory parts and trained techs. H car is a great option because they are close, they use factory parts, are generally less busy than a dealer or large independent so you are without your car for less time, and only work on honda/ acura so their are of expertise is focused. I brought my car in for a 40k service (minor service) and they were very meticulous. The even stamped my service booklet and lubed my door hinges and latches- two things dealers claim they do but don't. Chris, co owner and service writer, treated me as an individual, letting me know what my car needed and what may need in the future. The only tangible issue I found with them is their pricing. However, because they are experts and use factory parts, I would find it unusual if they didn't price a little higher than other independents. Also, they have to pay rent for their shop in PB so I'm sure that's not cheap either. Needless to say, I will be returning to H-Car for all my service and repair needs. read more

I needed a fair amount of work done but I felt like Chris was extremely honest and competent. It was even better because they specialize in Honda. This review is long overdue for Chris & Gary at H-Car garage. Years ago, when I 1st started bringing my car over to Chris, I would call my old mechanic over in the Bay Area to confirm that Chris's prices were legit. & each time I price-checked, Chris's prices were on point & about the same (sometimes lower) than my old mechanic's (who was already well-priced to begin w/). Chris will keep it real w/ you & tell you if you do not need a fix & vice versa. Thru a series of unfortunate events this past Xmas, I became that annoying customer that contacted him quite a few times in a short window of time & even so, he was there for me to help me out. Chris's knowledge & passion for Honda's is very apparent, as I've sat in his office as he's patiently explained to me what is going on w/ my car. If I remember our convo correctly, he stated that his father owned 1 of the 1st Honda dealerships in SoCal...so in a way, Honda's run thru his family. H-Car Garage (Trustworthy repair shop) / Pacific Honda (Scam Shop) BACKGROUND: Pacific Honda Service Center - SCAM shop In mid-May 2017, I took my 2013 Honda CR-V EX to get a 30K maintenance service at Pacific Honda in San Diego, CA - the cost of this service was ~$450. (My car had ~50K but I had got a mini-service done on my car about one year ago so Pacific Honda recommended the 30K service.) After the 30K service was complete, Pacific Honda recommended that I get additional service done - replacing the front brake pads (which they said were at 20%) and resurfacing the front rotors. This additional work was estimated at $400. They also recommended that I replace 3 tires (but recommended 4 for alignment) and that I get a wheel alignment. I normally don't get maintenance done at the dealership because they tend to overcharge but this was my first major service so I thought it best. Lesson learned! Read on... H-Car Garage - TRUSTWORTHY repair shop In mid-June 2017, rather than take my car to Pacific Honda again, I took it to a local repair shop, H-Car Garage (a small repair shop that 2 brothers own) - a place I used to take my old Honda Accord. After inspecting my car, Chris, called me up to let me know that my front brake pads are actually at 40%, my rotors did not need replacing or resurfacing and that my wheel alignment is fine. In addition, Chris mentioned I needed to replace my brake and transmission fluids (both of which were dirty). I mentioned to him that Pacific Honda should have replaced these fluids as it was a part of the 30K maintenance they did a month before (per it being checked off on the Pacific Honda paperwork). Aside from this, Chris's only recommendation was to have my tires rotated which would cost me $20 - a more honest and better deal than Pacific Honda quoted me at! So, I took my car to Pacific Honda last week after I complained to them what I was told by H-Car Garage - my front brake pads were actually at 40% (not 20% as stated on my paperwork and didn't need replacing per their suggestion), my rotors didn't need resurfacing per their suggestion, and that my fluids were dirty and didn't seem as if they flushed them out. Here's what Honda did for me, which took 3-hours to complete: - Replaced brake fluid again (including bleeding the brakes, which was done with the major service but not to specification) - Replaced transmission fluid again - Acknowledged that the brake pads were at 40% (not 20%, as was noted on the initial major service paper) - Reimbursed me some of the cost of the 30K major service While I appreciate the above work that Honda did and in trying to do right by their customer, it is still concerning that Pacific Honda would treat their customers this way (recommending things that aren't needed and not estimating correctly). I was lucky to have had a local car shop look my car over - otherwise, I would have paid $400 for things that I didn't need. How many other people has Honda scammed that didn't know it? Due to my experience, I don't recommend Pacific Honda for getting maintenance done on your car. RECOMMENDATION: I highly recommend H-Car Garage! They are trustworthy and experienced guys who will spend time showing you repairs that your car needs and will explain why it needs those repairs - they spend time with you, treating you like a real customer. They saved me the $400 that Pacific Honda was going to charge me for replacing brakes and resurfacing rotors (even though, thanks to H-Car Garage's inspection, neither was needed)! I should have went to H-Car Garage in the first place - they have always been easy to work with and are very knowledgeable about Honda cars...I'll be going back there from now on! Ok, you Honda owners that live in or near PB...this is where you go for your Honda service. They do pretty much everything except tires and bodywork. In the quality/speed/price triad the emphasis here is on quality. They only work on Hondas and they only use genuine Honda parts. They know Hondas better than Honda. The brothers that work here take their time and just work on a couple of cars a day. The prices are probably about the same as a dealer but you know who is turning the wrench and they will do it to Honda specifications every time and explain everything to you in more detail than most people want. We took our Honda CRV to H-Car for 15 years, but finally traded it in on a new Honda Pilot. The day our new car warranty expired, we were back to H-Car and felt like we should open a bottle of champagne. Chris and Gary are expert technicions, trustworthy, and charge reasonable rates. They never recommend unecessary work and they won't let you drive an unsafe car off their lot (even if it means that they have to drive you home). The Maitenance light in my honda came on as i drove home from work one night, and as H-Car Garage is right around the corner, i decided to give it a go. they did a great job! i had to spend $800 to get something serious fixed, and they had it done within the day. They explained what needed to be taken care of first to me (i couldn't tell you the difference between the oil and the liquid they use for the wipers), and then to my dad once he called to confirm what was going on. Chris, the guy who worked on my car, then explained it all again to me when I went to pick it up later that day. I believe in regular and proper maintenance of my Ridgeline. Living in PB that always meant driving the Kearny Mesa, dealing with the impersonal factory approach to maintenance at Pacific Honda, and getting a ride back and forth or sitting there for hours. It also meant talking not to mechanics about my car, but to people selling mechanic services in the service intake department. There is no real sense that they really care or that they really know what they are talking about. There is also no sense they can really evaluate your problem and give meaningful advice. They just want to sell you as much service as possible. H-Car is a breath of fresh air and I've been going there for four years now. When you arrive, you are dealing directly with the mechanic owner. I want no nonsense in car repair. He is a no nonsense person. He is the rare mechanic who you can ask, "Do I really need this," without feeling like a sap because he will automatically say "Yes!" The maintenance is done on time or sooner. I have never felt the prices were anything but fair. I always feel there is pride in a job well done, whereas at any regular dealer, I never even talk to the mechanic. This is a real find if you are a Honda owner and live in the beach area or La Jolla. They are not going to wash your car or vacuum your floor mats. They are not going to offer you a loaner car. They are going to do the job right, at a fair price, and you are going to feel like you got exactly what you needed with attention to detail and craftsmanship. read more

These guys were so great to my car and helpful. I had a 93 station wagon with issues from prior incompetence in service. They took extra time chipping off melted plastic in the spark plug area to replace plugs and didn't charge me extra. I trust them completely with cars. Very knowledgable with honest service and fair prices. I've had a starting issue (difficulty cranking) with an old 88 Honda Accord that I had all but given up on. As a experienced mechanic myself, I had gone though every system in the engine compartment with no luck. I couldn't even begin to tell you how many hours I spent chasing this gremlin. I was completely out of options. Anyway, I finally admitted defeat and decided to take my car to a Honda specialist. Having lived in the Pacific Beach area for 25 years, the decision as to where to go was easy...H-Car. They have a super reputation for Honda/Acura diagnostics and repair. For a very fair price, they performed a thorough and methodical diagnostics to identify and isolate the problem. After a little head scratching, they eventually diagnosed the cranking difficulty to a defective ignition part that I had installed in the recent past. This defective part also probably damaged the new starter I had also installed at the same time. Multiple component failures can be very difficult to find; this two man team nailed it on the first try! In closing, I highly recommend this shop to Honda owners. No need to ever go to a Honda dealer and pay their exorbitant rates for service again. The H-Car shop is clean, well organized, and professional in appearance. The two mechanics (owners) easily have 5+ decades of Honda experience between them. I also learned that this is a family business that has been around since Honda products first arrived in the US. I've owned 2 Hondas (a Prelude and Civic) and one Acura (TSX) since I moved to San Diego about 16 years ago. I didn't immediately find H-car, I tried about 5 other places first, with varying levels of success. When I first visited H-Car about 10 years ago they fixed a problem that 3 different dealers had been unable to diagnose correctly. I was really impressed.
