I recently moved to Boston and multiple people recommended Hmart for Asian foods and high quality groceries. However, I've been to Hmart twice now and I've been extremely disappointed by the nasty customer service. As an Asian-American woman, I patron Asian businesses as a way of supporting the Asian community. However, I'm writing this post because I've had absolutely terribly customer service there. Some of the employees on the sales floor were incredibly rude. The first time at Hmart, I asked a sales representative where I could find a certain product. She shot me dirty look and gave a curt response. However, I dismissed it as a fluke, thinking that the sales rep may have had a bad day. The second time at Hmart, I asked where I could find another product. However, the sales representative responded in the same impertinent tone, and sent me on a wild goose chase to the wrong aisle to find the product. If it was intentional, it just speaks to the terrible customer service on the floor. If it wasn't intentional, it speaks to how inexperienced the workers are. Regardless of intention, I spoke to the manager on site and he neither apologized for the poor customer service nor spoke about how to prevent this in the future. Rudeness and incompetence clearly runs throughout the business. I won't be coming back. read more

I LOVE it! Parking situation and Food court makes this a four star instead of five. New places will always look great, the food is stocked to the rim, the facility looks new, etc. However, some things to take note. The prices are higher here than the Hmart in Burlington. Also things are packaged in a way that young single people can shop here. College kids will love shopping here for their dorm room mini fridges. But be careful young people! These single portions will amount to a hefty bill at the cash register if you are not careful. I absolutely love that Paris Baguette is here!!! We ate the ramen and it was good but I will write another review for that. One suggestion to management. Please lower the volume on the background music or give the food court cashiers a microphone. It was annoying to hear the cashiers YELL numbers out when the food was ready to be picked up. Next time I go there I am NOT sitting in front of the cashiers. The ramen cashier and also the curry cashiers were OBNOXIOUSLY yelling the numbers out. Otherwise, it was a good experience. Definitely not as big as the burlington location, but really, who has the time to drive all the way up there? I stopped by here yesterday, oh a whim, my first time by the way... There is practically no parking at 7pm on a friday night.. the lot was full, but we just parked anyways, i don't think it was a real parking spot, but I'm here and i am not waiting for someone to leave. Walked in, it was kind of intimidating to be honest...they have a security guard at the door, and everyone's all eyeing you, thanks guys... saw the food court and went straight there! There's 3 places to get food like everyone said, sapporo and the go go curry place share the same cashier who is right in the middle. The paris bakery is across from them. I ordered an XL katsu curry for my bf and i to share, just to keep him quiet since we needed to grocery shop for some bulgogi meat! But this meal was huge and we were both full so we didn't even end up cooking. I got 2 drinks from the paris bakery, 1 was a taro frappe which they made wrong so i ended up waiting a long long time. They made the milk tea version, but the frappe tasted very watery so maybe i should have just kept the other one...who knows. My green tea latte (iced) was very good (4.50 EA), i also bought a giant pistachio macaron for 2.50 which was good too. So onto the shopping, they have a huge selection of meat prepackaged...i didn't see any already marinated meat so i might have missed it? I got 3 packages of the rib meat and they were of varying prices 5-9$ a package. Walked by this girl that was giving samples..the only one i saw, it was udon noodles in soup..i ended up buying the soup base AND the noodles... it was quite funny since i was just telling my bf i wanted to cook noodles for him and didn't know which one to buy and lo and behold i encounter the stand. This location is super convenient since it's by the Central T station. There are also plenty of racks to lock bikes in front of the store if you bike there. Like other reviewers mentioned, there is a Paris Baguette, Sapporo Ramen, and Go-Go Curry in the food court. There is also an area off to the side with microwaves to heat up the food you buy within the market. The overall layout is ok... but a tad small IMO. There is a large selection of precut fruit, but it's pretty pricey. I found a small box of lychee (think the size of a piece of 8x11 paper with one layer of fruit) for about $10. That's way too overpriced for me even though I love lychee and wanted it so badly! There are 3-4 aisles of Korean banchan by the vegetables and I found a thing of cooked squid for about $3... a steal! I was pretty disappointed in the tofu selection though. I wanted to buy smaller packets of soft tofu to make soon dubu at home, but they didn't have any! What kind of Korean market just sells the packets but not the tofu? I was able to find my favorite type of instant noodles in the family pack so I was happy about that. There are also a ton of marinated meats for grilling. It's definitely a place I would come for specific items, but it's definitely a little more expensive than I expected. read more

This Korean market is convenient for people around central square to shop for Korean/Asian grocery. The price is a bit higher than the Chinese markets in Boston, but the quality seems to be a bit better as well. It also has several Asian style eateries and a bakery. A habit I developed shopping at the H-mart was to once a while boil the most spicy ramen available to date, i.e. the '2x spicy' (on the wall before the entrance), and mix it with the bi bim bap vegetables (in the prepared food section of the refrigerated shelves), when I was tired of cooking. It was probably weird, but might even be healthy because I ate the veggies! read more

This place use to be good no any more. I bought a sushi tray on 4/23/20, with an expiration date of 4/25/20. When i got home and took off the plastic the smell of rotting fish knocked me back. Seafood that is sold specifically to be consumed raw was completely spoiled. Stay away from fish from here, it is nauseatingly bad. read more

Very frustrating. I called ahead of time on NYE day asking what business hours were, as my plan was to go get a fluke cleaned and prepped for some raw sushi on NYE. Got here at 7:20pm, knowing that the seafood department closes around 8pm. The guy at the counter could not understand the word "fluke" despite me repeating it a million times (and pointing at the fluke tank) and he kept saying back to me "lobster?" Multiple mental facepalms ensued. I had to ask if he couldn't speak English because there was no way you could mistake fluke with lobster, even with a mask on. BIGGES ISSUE: The most disappointing and frustrating part is that they sent the fish prep guys (who clean the fish and wield the knives in an expert fashion) home EARLY because of NYE. That is so irresponsible! At least have one guy on staff to take in orders before the department closes. And where are you going that you need to be off early for NYE (besides home)? We're in a pandemic for crying out loud. So frustrated by the lack of professionalism at this branch. The Burlington location is a million times better. read more

I can never get enough of Asian food and Hmart cures my Asian food craving a hundred times over. Everytime I've come its been pretty crowded and seems to be a popular hang out for family and friends. Inside the Hmart plaza there is also a Paris Baguette and a couple of other restaurants. My only qualm here is that the prices here are much higher than what you might find in a regular Asian super market. However the quality of the stuff they have here is pretty on point. Its a very clean super market and they always have great samples. Quick tip for people coming here outside of Cambridge, their bags at 10cents here so make sure to bring your own bags if you're trying to save. read more

The store manager is a local white guy who never worked in the retail but worked as a librarian in Somerville, he once told me. And, his lack of trained eyes are actually bothersome, sometimes. For example, this store sells the promotional fresh fruits in boxes.(fragrant Korean Melons, chamwoe, or Korean Pears $35 for 7 in one box). And, these are expensive, fragile, go bad fast and shouldn't be exposed to the room temperature, but be refrigerated. But, he let them sit on the store floor and then, let the latino staff to mob the floor with wet rags. soaking the boxes with the germ-filled mob water. And, he ignored my complaint. And, of course, these expensive fruits are all damaged, when I opened them at home. They also sold the "date-expired" Luna New Year gift set (Colorful Korean Traditional Rice puffs, Hangwa, Liquid Teas, or Royal Jelly, etc) at the discounted price. They do not disclose the date at the box outside (or erased). But, when I opened it, the snack was 2 months expired with the manufactured date in individual packages. At other retail grocery stores, the items that are close to the expiry dates will still be sold. But, here, H-mart Cambridge sells 2-3 months already expired products, with the old date stamp on it. That is dishonesty. When I mention these issues to the same manager, on the phone, there was ZERO sincerity, or he explained No known store policy. He forgot to "apologize(expecting Korean Manners, and, isn't it Universal to apologize for such a letdown?)" for my inconvenience to travel to Cambridge and back home, and back next time to return. Although I said I lived 4 hours away from Boston, and, he still flatly said t bring in the receipt the next day to get the refund. Forget it. Instead, I complained to H-Mart NJ head office about him. But, Koreans in the head office didn't act like Customer services. Hopefully, you don't run into issues like I did at all costs. Today, I searched about H-Mart reviews on-line; others shared their nightmares, from CA locations actually H-Mart people change the expiry date, by erasing the inked date to a new one for the frozen seafood packages. *Blocked aisles : When there was a snack sampling, often the young female workers wander around to grab the sample snacks themselves into their vests. These sampling events are not for the shoppers, it just blocks the aisles. Other young male workers block the aisles, with step ladders and the card board boxes on the floor. The aisles are too narrow and impossible to get by if there is another cart or a wheeled basket. 3 customers in 1 aisles is too crowded. *Shelving issues- poor categories They stocked one frozen sea food next to Kimchi, but, dumplings are found opposite of the building, next to the ice cream! These store management really need to benchmark other major supermarkets. It all starts with Flower, Produce-Bakery/Deli- then long shelf life products, then, Meat-Dairy, Frozen, then, cashiers. *Kimchi is not for the vegetarian! You should know there is NO Vegetarian Kimchi, as they use shrimp or fish fermented juice (rotting the raw fish with salt and the juice from their bodies produce-mixed with the beneficial bacteria, this will later be added to Salt-wilted Korean Vegetables to let them "fermented") So, although it is good, Kimchi is NOT vegetarian choice, Some of the Kimchi also have nuts. These should be mentioned for allergy alert. *Poor Communication These Asian cashiers do NOT speak English. They are not from USA, unlike many Latino workers hired in Burlington (Most speak English and documented). It is impossible to have any basic communication at the cashier's. The friendly part-time assistant manager has to come to each cashier area to translate English to Chinese. Well, how did H-Mart hire them to USA without understanding the basic? Other foreign workers who are hired in my town all speak English with the proper J-type document. I suspect if this will entail other evasions. But, that is just my speculation. Burlington H-Mart, on the contrary, hires "local" people, except for the Koreans (LOL) who don't speak English and run away from the customers. And, IMO, they don't speak or comprehend Korean to Koreans, either :) The standard is low. And, the reviewer below me, said about "paid" parking. This is a CENTRAL "Public" Parking lot for all, before H-Mart opening. She should have known the sign of the public parking lot when she fed her parking meter. And, to other fellow yelpers, LOCAL tax payers & Voters, it is important to support the independent small business. A Large Big Box store can ruin the local community by taking over their business one by one. (Florist, Pharmacy, Deli, Corner Grocery stores, Cafe, Lunch places...) All Inner city business should be smaller-scaled not to "cripple" the community. ***I really want you to practice your own precaution, and demand for the better to H-Mart to support and be part of the community. read more

Waiting for H-Mart to open in Cambridge seemed almost impossible. I worried that it would be as unsuccessful as the constant promise of an Ikea in Somerville. Shopping in Allston and driving to Burlington were both unsatisfactory in their own ways. I visited H-Mart yesterday to stock up on rice and large items that cannot be (easily) transported by subway. Plus, the imminent second blizzard of the winter made me want to make homemade soondoobu as form of coping with the obligation to shovel around my car. Lunar new year and the super bowl meant that the shop was busier than usual. It took me (even) longer to secure parking and work through the aisles. That wasn't a problem because I love their produce and banchan sections. The staff are always helpful, sweet, and polite. They always smile despite the rudeness doled out by some of the customers. Sometimes, I do find that the kimchi here is not as fresh as what one can find in NYC or Burlington. This isn't discovered until I get home. Sometimes, I still drive to Burlington for the freshness and variety that one cannot obtain in the Cambridge location. I do wish that they would find a way to guarantee fresh kimchi on their shelves. read more

H Mart is just okay. They are a good place to go for a quick bite or if I need some quick groceries, but so many things are over-priced. For example, it's hard to find a loaf of bread under $6. I realize that this is an Asian supermarket, but I similarly have seen avocados for $2.49 (when other places have them for $1.29) That being said, it is always very clean, the staff is friendly and helpful, and the food seems relatively fresh. read more

I am so glad that they opened a Hmart here, so that we don't have to travel all the way to burlington. But the Burlington location is bigger and has more options (grocery and food court). I only wish that this Hmart had aisles that are a bit wider so that you don't have to fight your way through them, but I guess they have limited space. By the time I made my way over last weekend, the crowds had died down. This place is cleaner than any other Asian supermarket I've visited, and there is a sense of wonder and magic in the air. Food samples are abundant, and freshly made meals sit perfectly packaged in the refrigerated section on the right side of the store. I love the selection of food--from banana milk to japchae--and the precision to detail that make the shopping experience here so fun. I am interested to see how this plays out as H Mart gets older, but for now, check it out! Haven't tried out the food court, but the Yelp reviews are not promising. read more

Way back when, I could only visit an H Mart if in NJ or NY.. and then came the long-awaited Burlington location, which I would faithfully make the trek to if I were looking for a full-on Korean grocery and food court experience. And THEN, we Bostonians were blessed with this great location right in Cambridge! This H Mart is super clean, well stocked and quite nice. I don't really care for the food court (esp. compared to the yummier selections offered at the Burlington location), but it's quite popular and always busy. If you're looking for an asian supermarket, H Mart is the only place to go! Super 88? No thanks! I do go to Reliable Market in Union Square, Somerville since it's even closer to me and I try and support the local guys, but when I'm looking for a nicer experience, I prefer H Mart for sure. I highly recommend this place- even just to browse, it's a good spot. Ran in on my way out of Boston to pick up some staples to stock the fridge and pantry. Store was clean, lots of groceries and variety!!! I hit the frozen dumpling aisle hard. The aisles are very small and narrow and I can't imagine getting through there during peak shopping hours! I was in and out in less than 20 minutes on a Monday morning and it was a very tight when more than one person was taking turn or passing in the aisles. Wish I could have stayed and enjoyed the food court, but headed home and enjoyed some Jinga pre-made Japchae, pork steamed dumplings and kimchi! My only complaint from my very short trip were the prices! Much higher than other HMart's in other states, but I guess that's what you get in the middle of Boston. read more

I love all of the Asian food available in the grocery section (mostly Korean and Japanese) paired with the fancy French style pastries up front (Paris Baguette). They also have a Sapporo Sushi & Ramen (related to the one in Porter) and Go! Go! Curry as a mini food court of sorts. We ordered the veggie and the pork ramen from Sapporo (seat yourself and pickup with your # when ready). The bowls were large and about $11. For the price I would probably just go to one of the other ramen places in town and get served, but it's a quick relaxed meal and there's the bonus of a full grocery in the back. read more

Overpriced! The items here are generally way more expensive than Trader Joe's, and slightly more expensive than Whole Foods. Plum tomatoes are $1.99/lb, a bag of matcha kit kats are $9.99, and strawberries are $5/lb. I only go here to get Asian food items that I can't get anywhere else. This is a very convenient korean hmart store that is located a block away from central train station. It is a smaller version comparing to the one in Burlington. However I gave this place a 3 star because of the rising prices. I use to always buy kimchi from this store and when they first open it was cheap and affordable then they started raising their price little by little... Now it is extremely expensive in-comparison to the price they had when they first opened! Even their banana milk (6 pack)and milkies are overly expensive now comparing it to the burlington store (if I remember correctly Cambridge banana milk is 6.99 or 7.99 for a pack where as Burlington store was 2.99 or 3.99). This review is a comparison to other H Marts I'm used to frequenting in Los Angeles. The market is small; thus, there are limited varieties and goods such as Asian household items, Asian hair care products, and juice/teas/drinks. It's understandable though as the building space is small. For the limited space, the market does a good job of having something in each category and their ready-made side dishes are decent. read more

I love discovering new interesting products, trying free foods and sauces at their sampling stands, enjoying their affordable parking places free on Sundays, etc. Their exotic fruit section has been excellent: humongous papayas, peaches, etc. Affordable pre-cut dragon fruit mixed with strawberries are available for a healthy dessert or snack. The best thing about H-Mart opening in Cambridge is that now a whole lot more people can experience The Greatest Supermarket on Earth (just trust me on this one). And if opening day was any indication, pretty much all of Cambridge/any and all surrounding areas already has. Space was tight, elbows were rubbing, and customers were taking selfies as if they had never seen five refrigerator shelves stacked full of tofu before - and maybe they hadn't. For those of you who have never had the pleasure of seeing H-Mart firsthand, let me explain precisely why it's worth the risk of getting trampled in your attempt to grab some kimchi samples. Basically, H-Mart is kind of like the Korean Whole Foods, except that the prices actually make sense. Though it is Korean owned, their goods run the pan-Asian gamut, plus a decent selection of the things you would find in any ol' American supermarket. Unlike a lot of its competitors, it is impeccably clean with no signs of fish stench. They even keep the durians in their own closed fridge to keep your olfactory nerves happy. There are samples galore, a ton of inexpensive produce that you probably won't find anywhere else, and aisles full of every kind of noodle you can imagine. And if that's not enough, there's even a mini food court! In other words, I'd take H-Mart over Disney World any day. I came in at 4 on opening day, hoping that is was too late for the standing-in-line-overnight crowd and too early for the just-got-out-of-work crowd, but surprise, surprise, it was still super packed. I was very impressed that they still had plenty of samples, though. The last time I was at the Burlington H-Mart it was the day before Christmas Eve and the samples had all already been devoured by the time I got there. I especially loved the Korean pancake samples, so much that I had to grab a few to take home with me, even though I wasn't planning to. I do wish they had fruit samples like they always have at Burlington - I really love getting to try fruit that I hadn't even heard of before. It definitely seems smaller, if not half the size, of the branch in Burlington, but that's expected considering Central Square real estate. I don't think there's a huge difference in selection, just that this one is packed more tightly (also not ideal for the number of people, but hey, I knew what I was getting myself into). I think there's only three food court places here, but they look intriguing, if you haven't filled up on samples. The staff was really kind, I think even kinder than Burlington's team. The best thing though was that they were giving out gifts to the customers! I was super excited to peer into my bag and find that two bags of delicious peanut snacks had made their way in. With all the surrounding ramen-dependent students and the Cambridge community, I don't think they could have picked a better location. So, three cheers for H-Mart! This is as good as it's going to get in terms of Asian grocery stores in Boston. Ming's in South End is really big, sure, but is it as it as clean or friendly or bright as H Mart? Newp. H Mart was my favorite Korean grocery store to frequent when I lived in California, so I'm really happy to see it just off the Red line or a short bus ride away. The produce here is significantly better than many of the small grocers in South End, so I've decided to do most of my grocery shopping at H Mart. All your Korean cooking needs? Check! Need some sashimi, caviar, or frozen fish? Check! Land creatures? Check! A long aisle of different sauces from soy, goma, ponzu, sesame, etc? Check! Pre-packaged sets for shabu, BBQ, or soup? Check!! KIMCHI FOR DAYS?? YES. It's all covered at H Mart. I pity the fool that does their Asian grocery shopping at Shaw's where they offensively labeled their aisle "Chinese" when there is clearly a mix of Asian ingredients not exclusive to Chinese cooking. If you're hungry after all that browsing, there's a nice food court, but I can't attest to how good the food actually is. All the prices at H Mart are very reasonable & some of the produce comes in such a large bundle, you'll just have to figure out what the heck to make with an enormous amount of dill. Dill for days, y'all, dill for days. For those concerned about organics: there are lots of organic products at H Mart! I hope they have more in the future, but they have various organic produce, which is the most important. Their staff ranges from friendly to bored, but my last experience there was friendly, so I'll give them that extra star. Take your time navigating this market, but try not to walk away buying everything. They might not have everything you'll need to make some Vietnamese dishes, but you'll walk away with all you need to make a delicious sushi roll, kimibap, ramen, bibim naengmyeon, etc. read more

Their food court food is okay but i think they only had about 3 stores and a bakery. But yes when I'm up in boston and need some korean food groceries, i definetely do stop by so stock up my selves. I do love the fact that they have kobe beef even if they are quite pricy, I mean why not if it's only a once in a while craving thing. They have quite a few japanese and any other asian products too. So... if you want anything asianish grocery (mainly snacks for me) shopping, definetely stop by!! And yes they carry Korean foods the most. H-Mart offers a grocery store and a food court area with different entree vendors and a bakery. The bakery works pretty efficiently - allowing customers to serve themselves and choose which pastries they want and bringing it up to the cashier to pay. I had the egg tart and the cream bread pastry. I enjoyed the egg tart - the filling was just sweet enough without being overwhelmingly sweet and the pastry was nice and flaky. I'm not sure I would get the cream bread pastry again though - the consistency of the cream filling was not as smooth as I hoped for and the filling did not cover as much of the bread as I had originally hoped. However, I would still recommend this place if you're looking to grab a quick bite and do some grocery shopping as well! read more
