What can I say? Super-H Mart is unlike any other market around. Super H packs a ton of retail shops into a compact space that caters largely to Asian cuisine and products, and it's wonderful! While I found it worth a visit simply from a regular grocery shopping experience both times I shopped, for me it was also a fun cultural experience, and something I look forward to doing again soon. With so much to see, here's what I found so far: A HUGE Kimchi selection. Every kind of soy and rice oil and sauce you could ever want. Tons of unique and difficult to find produce. Try the Opal apples, yum! Live fish to eat! Every rice cooker on the market, no joke! At least 6, yes, 6 restaurants on site! Half a dozen retail stores, including a book store, mail salon, and clothing store. A huge seafood department. Sake, lots of Sake. Foods you won't find in a regular grocery. A full butcher shop. Idk about anyone else , but i absolutely love H Mart! They have everything! Well... except clothing items of course its more for groceries. So i must say, i bought every snack items here and they were all delicious. The kimbap is the best! Kimchi is good and the cucumber kimchi is good. I like the bakery also. Its very soft and melts in your mouth kind of bread. The ppl here are friendly in some sense but theyre kinda aggressive with their approach. First time in Super H Mart this weekend, and honestly, I was really excited. A little nervous as well, i May add. I was a bit concerned all the signage would be in a language I don't understand, but not to worry- English was also on the signs, and if not, we kinda figured it out! We went Saturday early evening, and it was packed. You walk into the produce section, then as you walk through you hit some in-store eateries, a ton of kimchi refrigerated cases, then fish and aisles. Not knowing a lot of Asian food, I can't really say "they have this but not that" but I will say they have A LOT of items! We got waylaid in our mission for bao buns in the ramen aisle (and came home with 3 different kinds!), then spent the rest of our time in the frozen foods probably buying out all the dumplings. It seemed like we spent hours walking around in awe at all the foreign to us items and amazing food smells everywhere. We're excited to go back and learn to use some more of these awesome ingredients at our disposal. read more

I love Hmart. I just wish I did not have to go all the way out to Niles to shop! As previous Yelpers have mentioned, there is a huge parking lot. This is good because you don't want to have to walk too far with all of the groceries you are going to buy. The store itself is very large. And it is very very cold. Bring a jacket--no matter what time of year. I think the store is like a huge walk-in cooler. Geez, I can only imagine their a/c bill. There are so many different types of fruits, veggies, etc. Both "American" and Asian things. Durian, lychees, apples, bok choy, mushrooms, etc. All at pretty decent prices. I will say that the place gets very crowded and there are some aggressive, pushy people running through the store using their carts as battering rams. So be careful. There is a corner of the store with prepared foods to take home--lots of different kimchi, the little side dish items, marinated meats, etc. They have such a vast selection of noodles (fresh, dried, frozen), spices, marinades, soy sauces, etc. You can spend all day just wandering the aisles. We went on a Saturday around 10:30am. They had ladies giving out tasting samples everywhere we looked. I had a really good spicy crab ramen. It was delicious, I was super freezing cold and it was hot, so I bought some to take home with me. Their sales ploy worked! They sell alcohol there but I would not recommend Hmart as the place to go if you are looking for wine. Go to Binny's instead. The lines. are. long. When we got to the checkout area, there were not enough cashiers working and at least 8 carts deep. And these were full carts. So be prepared to be patient. After we finished shopping, we loaded up the car with our groceries and then went back into Hmart to eat at the food court. Yes, they have a food court and like a mini mall of various stores around the perimeter. Looking for a new bed? They have it. Looking for face creams? They have it. Looking for an electronic bidet? I live in Chinatown with the West Loop H Mart is literally a 5 minute drive away. However, the Niles location is so good and so much cheaper that I'd rather drive the 30-40 minutes to get here. Growing up my dad always told me his favorite pastime was grocery shopping. I could see the sparkle in his eyes the minute he grabbed that cart and zoomed through the aisles putting random items into the cart as far as the eye can see (much to my mom's dismay). I never understood that feeling until I came here. I recently told myself I was going to try cooking more at home, and after I bought a portable Korean grill, that goal was a possibility. This location has everything you can think of for all Asian cuisines! There's brisket, short rib, pork belly, seaweed salad, and kimchi to name a few. The quality is always top notch. The brisket I get here is honestly better than most I've had at restaurants. To top it all off, it's cheap too! As a brisket lover I noticed that brisket comes to $25 a pound at the West Loop area but only $10 a pound here. I've tried the restaurants a couple times too and they're all great! The sushi place is always my favorite because there's always an adorable older person yelling, "BUY ONE GET ONE FREE" every so often. Needless to say, this place is in my heart and the top of my list to go to for all grocery needs! read more

It's great because you can shop & eat lunch/dinner at the same time! In the seafood section, there is a wide variety to choose from. There is even fresh shrimp and crab (which are still alive!). Pros: This shop has an overpriced yet adequate selection of dried sea products and Korean staples. They also have a good selection of ramen and biscuits. Cons: Weirdly, two shop employees followed my 5 year old child and I for at least two isles in the store. I noticed when I looked up while in the skincare isle, I saw two employees staring at us for longer then the few seconds that constitute a normal stare period. This was off-putting but whatever, perhaps they were just looking in our direction and not staring at us, so we shifted to another isle. The employees appeared to follow us to the other isle as well. Red flag. I have no idea why anyone would follow a well-dressed middle aged woman and a young child except for perhaps racism. I am South Asian and brown-skinned so racism is my best guess but it's had to say exactly. Regardless, the whole experience was off-putting enough to report it here and not shop there again. There are better East Asian groceries in Chicago, go to those. read more

I'm rather new to cooking Asian cuisine. It's a lot of fun to peruse the aisles and learn about foods from this part of the world. Shopping at H Mart is an adventure and I make sure I have time to go through every aisle. The food court is interesting and I recently tried their beef bibimbop. Super H Mart is a trip for a non Asian person like me. The center of the store is basically laid out like a supermarket with a focus on Asian foods, including produce, meat and fish. You'll find all sorts of unusual foods here. A nice feature is that there will be multiple food sample stations on weekends, Saturdays in particular. Wanna try crab chips, fish balls, marinated beef, dried anchovies, kim chi, japanese yogurt? You can! I like the usual snacks like shrimp chips, dried and spiced fishes, and imported candies. The seafood selections are really interesting, as are their meat selections. The outside ring of the large interior space is filled with stalls featuring Asian retailers. You can find cosmetics, appliances, mini donut makers, iced coffee shops, a bakery with samples out front, and about a half dozen food preparers. There are noodle shops, Korean, including a separate Korean fried chicken place, and sushi. Good to know is that if you come at the end of the day before everything closes, you'll find 2 for 1 sushi in the cases on Saturdays. Also good to know is that if you come here before you visit the King Spa next door, you can buy a pass to the spa with $20 cash at the customer service desk, which will save you $15 off the regular entrance fee. The lines to check out can be a little long, depending on time of day, so be prepared. I like exotic and unusual things, and this place hits the mark again and again for me. read more

This place is a little paradise consisting of nearly any Asian groceries your little heart could desire. I'll take you through a mini tour. So upon entering this lovely large establishment you'll see a huge section of vegetables and fruits. The groceries are fairly reasonable (especially the stuff on sale) and they have fruits and vegetables you can't find most local independent grocers, much less the chain grocery stores. It's fun to walk around and just look at the stuff. Sometimes they'll have someone chopping and giving out samples of some of the fruits at the front, we've bought some melons we never would have tried if not for the samples. To the right after entering is Bini Bakery which sells some delicious baked goods (and also has samples!). And just beyond the bakery is their food court with an assortment of Korean/Japanese/Chinese food. Walking past the veggie section you'll see the banchan & prepared food area where they package and sell an assortment of Korean foods including kimchi and kim bop. Turn the corner and you'll be in the frozen area with some seafood and noodles and such. Keep going and you'll make it to the fresh seafood and further from there the meats. In the middle section you'll be able to find all sorts of sauces, teas, rices, and an amazing assortment of ramen noodles. They have nearly everything you'd need to make an Asian or Asian-inspired dish. If you come on the weekends (or maybe it's only Sundays?) they have samples of a lot of different dishes and drinks, definitely worth braving the crowds. Well...maybe Assi....but I prefer H-Mart. I remember when this Korean Megastore opened and it was like the holy grail for my friends and I. They have anything & everything you could desire for your Korean cooking needs + some American selections. I noticed they do have a few different version of mac & cheese on my last visit. Red bean ice cream in several different varieties...I even saw three versions of Ube ice cream which is more than the one available at the Filipino market. I recommend avoiding the weekends because it can get so insanely busy, try to stick to weekdays & weeknights. read more

First time to Hmart. Drove 2 hours from Wisconsin and was not disappointed at all. The market was huge and clean. We started off with lunch and there were so many choices. Tried a few korean dishes from the two middle vendors and they were delicious. Wish I live closer, I would go there every day for the grilled Macrakerals. Also I wish I could ha e tried more food, but I was so full. Then we went shopping. The aisles were clean and wide enough. The fruits and veggies look fresh. And it was just an adventure to stroll down every aisle since it was my first time. The freshly made Kim chi was my favorite item that we bought. Where I live, we don't get that good kimchi. And finally, loved all the small stands around the market. Tried the Korea taiyaki and it was decent. Would have to say the Japanese version is better. Overall, great experience and would plan to go again soon. read more

Wow - what a paradise. :) As soon as we walked in, we stopped by their food court and had some delish Korean noodle soups. There also was a Chinese food and sushi stand, too, in which we got some green onion pancakes. Best of all - they had the spicy tofu soup that I was craving. The Asian products that they had there was glorious - we stocked up on our frozen foods, Asian vegetables that are usually impossible to find, some yummy Asian apple pears, Asian drinks & teas, and huge cases of sesame oil and soy sauce. My wife and I come here about every eight weeks when we need to do a more sizeable grocery run, and I always look forward to coming here. It is like a Korean version of cotsco. The produce here is fresher than anywhere else in town and at a better price to boot. There are also types of produce (such as durian) that are generally not available elsewhere. The meats and seafood are great too. We love getting the Korean marinated beef short ribs, salmon roe, sashimi grade fish, whole chicken, steaks, lobster...i just cannot stop. There is what appears to be a great food court. We have not really utilized it because we generally grab lawrence fish market on the drive back downtown. I recommend this place to all read more

Yes... As good as it gets!!! I am no specialist when it comes to grocery shopping, especially in a ethnic store such as this. But I do know that this is a one stop shop for anything related to Asian food. My sister and I bought our mother a gift to a sushi making class, and a week after the class, we decided to make our own. Everything we needed was found at H Mart, so it nice not to make multiple trips. Only thing is it took us forever to find what we needed. With an endless variety in a gigantic store and a lot of foreign items, it def becomes quite the task. You can find all sorts of crazy looking fruits and vegetables, so make sure you have your smart phone on you to make sure you know what the hell it is you are buying! Aside from the insane selection of food items, H mart has a great food court on the right side of its building. Everything from a bakery, to sushi, Chinese, Korean, and even dumplings. It's a great spot for lunch because it's never too busy or packed. I always get sushi from Tokyo Lunch Box which has great specials, but that's a review on its own. There is also a "mall" that surrounds the building where you can find cell phones, furniture, bed related items, and so much more. I've never shopped there before, but I am not kidding when I say you don't need to go anywhere else for your shopping. Walking into H Mart is an entirely different experience than any other grocery store. It feels like you have just entered a different country. We bought jajjamyoung from chinese food section which is located first food section. We bought 4 food . She didnt give us wooden one time use chopsticks. She gave us used one. Thats DISGUSTING!!!! And when we finish food there was left over and i asked box and she said its $0.50. I said okey . I gave her my card she said no card cash. Then i said I don't have a cash. She said if card i have to spend 7$. Super rude lady never smile , angry I asked how can i pay if I don't have a cash. Then she started acting crazy. And told me go away i was shocked. Great Korean grocery with pretty good selection. Whatever you do, however... Do not buy lettuce here!! I witnessed a worker stocking lettuce in the produce section.. He grabbed it out of a box, dunked it in a trash can filled with water, and placed it on the display. Repeat over and over. I peeked in the trash can and the water was disgusting! So gross that this was being done... Avoid refrigerated produce at H-mart! Another tip - sometimes the store is not good at math. Always check out the deal math. I've seen sales like a box of 12 items for 14 bucks, but $6 for a 6pack of the same item. Go figure! read more

Ummmm, how could anyone ever give this place a less-than-glowing review? Super H Mart is a Korean superstar of a market. As soon as you enter the parking lot, you know you're in for a massive treat. Then you look at that behemoth of a supermarket that is Super H Mart, and gasp, "Oh... WOW." Once you step inside, you'll see just rows after rows of garden-fresh, stunning, vivid, and brightly colored produce of almost every kind. It looks like a freakin' rainbow exploded in here with fruits and vegetables. There is basically everything under the sun that you've ever imagined here -- from jackfruit to oyster mushrooms to fish mint to lotus roots to pea shoots to garlic stems/scapes to burdock root. The first time I saw their produce section, I almost wanted to shed tears of happiness. Literal, actual, big, fat tears. I L.O.V.E. eating all kinds of fruits/veggies, both ordinary and exotic ones. So this is honestly like my Garden of Eden. Next is the prepared meat, seafood, and regular meat section, which, as many others have said, is equally as generous in its options as well its variety. Monkfish, milkfish, grouper, porgie, tuna, salmon, mussels, clams, uni (sea urchin roe)... No worries. You want it? They got it. Their meat selection is definitely on the pricier side, about $1-2 more per pound. More expensive than my other favorite Korean market, Joong Boo. But the quality is hard to beat. You won't see any sketchy or discolored meats here. Only beautifully marbled, well-sliced, lovely hunks of meat. Oh. Did I mention they have heritage Berkshire pork here? That tender, buttery soft, pinkish-red hued, succulent, and heavily marbled pork-- also known as Kurobuta-- that is often used in Tonkotsu ramen. In essence, Berkshire is to pork what wagyu is to beef. I am salivating just thinking about it. Finally, a couple of words of advice: 1. Wait for the meat sales! Especially the ones for prepared meats. The marinated bulgogi often drops to $4.98/lb. And the Korean shortibs can go as low as $5.98/lb. A veritable bargain as far as I'm concerned! 2. Come here for the cheap Asian slippers! They are seriously soooooooo cheap. The average cost is about $2.99 - $5.99 for most pairs, but sometimes during their Super Sales, they can be as inexpensive as 3/$5.00. Just perfect for those of us who remove their shoes at home and don slippers in their households. read more

I live in the suburbs of Chicago, and cant seem to drive all the way to viet town or china town in the city, when I actually want some asian groceries. Most asian stores around my areas, have a huge variety of korean or Japanese groceries only. So when I went to Super H Mart... it was such a relief to find this place. I love it how when you first enter the stores, all the fruits and veggies are right in the front. (plus all the food vendors. hehe) But the best thing about this very entrance is.. it has a very large variety of fruits and veggies. There are lots of fresh asian veggies that you can't find, however they carry it here. Next, I am asian, and I must have rice... there is a variety to pick from and the prices aren't rediculous either for a 20lbs bag. (yes I said 20lbs... we love our rice.) I usually buy Jasmine rice...and the kind I am getting here is about $18 for a 20lbs bag. As you shop around in this store, there are staff members out along the aisles cooking up something, and you can try this or taste that. Which is pretty cool... cus there are lots of food I havent had before. And I like to see how simple it could be cooked. I also love seafood... and they have a very nice selection of fresh seafood. I once got a whole seabass fish here... I got to pick whichever one I wanted, they scaled it and cleaned it out... packed it up in a clean bag. And it didnt cost much either. I must've paid like $6 bucks for it. Which was awesome in my mind... the other thing that I always buy here is the shrimp. The price is always just right here. They are always fresh, and run for about $4.99 a lb. Last but not least, I want to mention the frozen food section. They actually have a very large selection of frozen food. This is where I can get microwavable stuff for my man. He can have instant asian food in the microwave when I'm not home. haha. They also have a variety of ice creams, from popsicles to fruit bars and mochi's.. Yes!! go here for your asian groceries!! This place has A LOT of options. Of course, you'll immediately see the groceries (fresh fruits, veggies, etc.) and the bottles/canned goods further in the store. But do not skip out on the many restaurants on the right hand side when you walk in. They have so many delicious food options, which are all prepared fresh and hot after you order. You can easily get some shopping done and then have a quick bite. There is plenty of seating but it can get busy on weekends. I recommend ordering, doing some shopping, and then coming back for your food once it is ready. Checkout lines can get kinda busy but they usually have several lanes open. The only downside is that there is no self checkout here so even if you want to buy 1 item, you have to stand in the long lines. read more

We come here after our visits to King Spa because it is right there. Sweat and then shop. Perfect. You will find all your usual "American" grocery needs here including incredibly fresh produce, fish, and meat, and you will find all sorts of Asian ingredients and prepared Korean side dishes, etc. There is a food court, bakery, home goods store, etc. all within the perimeter of the actual grocery store. You can buy rice, a rice cooker, and a rice storage container all in one stop. Looking for socks with the faces of K-pop stars? Check. Knitwear that would make any Korean ahjuhma stop with envy? Check. A fox fur vest? Check. There also are several Korean make-up and skincare stores including the famous The Face Shop. I'm a Sephora Rouge VIB so I know I have a make-up buying problem, but my true addiction is to paper facial masks, which I will never buy anywhere but here.
