Ventura Habit!! It must be moving tradition for me to grab a bite to eat here either the day of moving or the day after. I just moved to the Ave and was headed back to Oxnard to finish clearing old my old place and realized it was already 3:00pm and I hadn't had anything to eat since breakfast. So I decided to stop by. The first thing I noticed was a huge piece of plywood covering a window by the entrance. I am sure there is a story behind that but at first I thought maybe the location was closed because of that but also seeing the parking lot extremely full with one spot open, I figured it had to be open. Yea, so parking is tight! I can't even imagine how it would have been if I came at lunch hour or even after 5:00pm. I walked up to the kiosks and put in my order. So I had an annoyance with the kiosk. It just wasn't that simple to order. For the basics it's easy but I could not for the life of me find the sweet potato fries. They should have been listed right under the fries menu. So I had to miss out on sweet potato fries and ordered regular ones. I also ordered a hibiscus Fresca. The burger was great as usual although I did feel like the patties are getting smaller because after biting about 1/3 of the way on one of the sandwich halves, I was left with nothing but lettuce, avocado and bread. The fries were good. The hibiscus fresco was really sweet with little to no hibiscus flavor (skip it!). Customer service was great at the pick-up counter. The food is decent, but don't expect to eat in peace. Be prepared for homeless individuals using this place as their hangout. You may find one by the entrance having an argument with himself. I have been going to The Habit for years and love their food. My favorite was the Grilled Chicken Salad. With Cucumber, Tomato Slices, large Croutons, etc. There is some really bad decision making going on at the habit and in my opinion not for the better. They have removed the grilled chicken salad and replaced it with a Garden Salad or Garden Salad with Chicken for 4 bucks more. First off the Chicken is Diced, doesn't feel like your getting alot for your money compared to the Grilled Chicken salad they used to serve. Everything about this salad is disappointing. the Tomatoes are now Cherry I preferred the sliced, the Cucumber is also dices and so small you dont even know they are in their. This goes for the Red onion too so small I thought the Store had forgot to put it in their, but if you look real close, you will find microscopic pieces of red onion. Not the slices of red onion like they used to do. Sorry but very bad decision. I can see adding some new salads even seasonal but dont remove a perfectly great salad and skimp and call it innovating or fresh. Definitely fell flat for me. Thank god you haven't changed the burgers I would really have to consider skipping the habit in the future if that came to be. Also thank god you didnt change the cobb, I have had to revert to that salad as I will not be repurchasing the Garden Salad with chicken. read more

I really like Habit and think it's closest in taste to In N Out's freshly grilled burgers, BUT without the massively looong lines. This location is convenient for those who are staying downtown, but driving here to park is a pain, as the lot is very small with limited spots. It's tight and I could see minor car accidents happening. The ordering area is also kinda tight, with people waiting for orders, and the carryout orders taking up more space. The staff usually tends to be friendly and customer-oriented (but it's been awhile since I've eaten at this location). I do notice that their prices are higher than the Telephone Habit location, but that is prob. due to the downtown more touristy location. read more

I've been to Habits along the coast and this one was up to standard with quality and cleanliness. Unfortunately my order took MUCH longer than I'm used to. I ordered to go around 4:45 pm and got my order 20 minutes later. I'd say that's a bit too long to get a sandwich. I ordered the Club sandwich because I needed a proper fill up and it hit the spot. Bread was crispy and not too oily; lettuce and tomato in good quantity, chicken was moist and warm; bacon was perfectly cooked and not skimped; avocado also came in plenty; the best part is the mayonnaise and whatever else they put inside. I have been visiting this location for years, but after it became a corporate chain, this location and all the others in Ventura County have become garbage. Food quality has dropped immensely. Cleanliness is marginal at best. I went to the register to place my order, stood there for over 6 minutes listening to a couple of workers at the food prep station arguing with each other and ignoring me before another employee finally appeared and told me I had to place my order on the self-service kiosk because the cashier "is the break". This is incredibly disappointing, because this used to be my favorite burger place in town. As always, once a corporate takeover occurs, everything goes straight into the toilet. read more

I gotta say first and foremost, I absolutely love The Habit Burger restaurant chain. I've been living in California for the last 13 years and I adopted a liking for it within a week of my move here. With that being said, enough is enough. Will you please change the oil for the fries or cook them differently? This is the third time I've been to this location in Ventura over the last 6 months and every time the fries leave an odd residue-type aftertaste in the mouth. Ketchup can't even cover it. Went today and it was terrible. The lazy workers had a bunch of burgers all sitting on the grill drying out and as people ordered they put water on the grill to rehydrate them. The fries were ice cold and the soda machine was all out of carbonation and when the staff was told they replied saying they were all out as it wasn't ordered. We waited almost 20 minutes for our food and there were literally few others there. You had to wipe your own table as well. Ok the habit use to be our go to. We stopped going since management changed. The burgers lost their flavor. So we started going to in n out. But we still came for the salads. But the salads are not as good either. The worst part is that the tomatoes are gross and had a bad flavor. My wife has said the salads have been not fresh for some time. I love this location of The Habit bc it's at such a beachy spot! The food has always been good at this location, like every time! I order either the veggie burger ( which is vegan), or the Impossible Burger. The ice tea is always on point as well! And they have Curbside pickup which has been suuuuch a life saver this past month since I've been recovering from a broken foot and having meals (but not fast food) brought to my car is sooooo helpful and awesome! There are the usual homeless peeps walking around this area since it's so close to beach, but I've never had an issue. By far one of the worst locations I've ever been to. I'm from Santa Barbara and I've been to all those location as well as the Maryland locations. This establishment was disgusting. Their dining area was filthy even the order stations were covered in thick amounts of dust and grime. I went to the bathroom where it was cover is poop from head to toe foul. Then when it came to the food the fries and green beans tasted like they've never chained the oil. The taste of the burger surprised me at how awful it was but maybe it tasted worse due to the rest of the atrocious things they have going on here (nope it was just nasty). Habit Burger and Grill is a very consistent chain burger place that is almost always OK. The double charburger with fries that I had was prepared fresh and there were a lot of fries. Service was OK as well; I do think they prefer that you order at the kiosk. I did enjoy the food here in a clean dining room. Price is decent here, when in Ventura I occasionally eat here, this place is within walking distance of several hotels on Thompson. There is a cinnamon shake that is very good slightly tastes somewhat like horchata. EDIT 7/5/24 Someone with Habit commented asking how to get more stars. Have people at the counter to take the order for those who do not want to order the other way, not everyone wants to order at a kiosk. read more

I'm typically a fan of the Habit... But 1st, I noticed the total of $12 seemed a bit higher than expected for a burger & onion rings... So I looked twice at the menu prices and it didn't quite add up as expected. Looking closer at the receipt I saw a staff service charge added $1.65? So I'm not really having a problem with paying gratuities... But I don't expect that to be automatically added to my tab? I could see on the counter they had a tip jar And sometimes I do throw in money at the counter when I feel that it is deserved. On this occasion I thought the service was about average and undeserving of a gratuity in a fast food place. Sorry, that's just how it goes. I don't just tip everybody because I can, I most certainly attach any gratuity to service rendered which is reasonable and professional. That was not the case today. So... Again an issue with my order. I have food allergies and asked for two things not to be on my burger. I get home and guess what's on my burger? Both items I asked to not be on there. I emailed habit as asked to do before and never got a reply and it's been over a month. Food allergies can kill people - if your workers can't figure it out, it could be a very dangerous situation. This is always a stop for lunch on my way to camping at the beach parks a couple of times a month. I went yesterday and they now started charging for extra ranch dressing. They give you 1 small container of it and are now charging 60 cents + tax so .65 cents for anymore than the first one. My adult son went to the Habit in Simi tonight and they charged the same there. It's not the cost, it's the principle. That should be baked into the cost of the burger & fries/onion rings. Unfortunately, the Habit just lost two customers.
