We've always enjoyed the sandwiches. But the side salad has lost its charm over the years. Tonight we substituted fruit on a couple sandwiches, and I also ordered three separate side orders of fruit. They no longer look ANYTHING like the picture on the site. I think they give you what they call "kiddie fruit" even when you order them standalone. I love love looooovvvveee Urbane Cafe. My Cilantro Chicken Salad is always on point! I also really love how fresh everything in. Now my favorite location is the Downtown one. They're always so friendly and welcoming . I feel this location isn't as welcoming unfortunately. I wasn't greeted and checked in on as in the other Urbanes I have been to. This location had a reno not long ago. It has a modern clean look . Which I love! Seating indoors and outside. Another thing I didn't love was that they pre prep the plates with salad on the side and they're just sitting there in the open. I know it's a means to provide speedy service but I enjoy my greens cold. Will forever be in Urbane Cafe fan. I go often but I do have my favorite location in Downtown Ventura. read more

The manager james seems to run that place with compassion and carrying not by anger and violence, which i've seen a lot of restaurants run like that. Rarely do I go inside to eat here, because their service is terrible. The people typically working the cash register seem miserable, and God forbid you ask if they have more chocolate chip cookies. The female cashier was very rude when I asked that question and she replied very sarcastically. Other than that, their sandwiches are pretty good, the bread really sells them. The salads are also pretty good! The chocolate chip cookies are the best thing they have, and they're so delicious, but they tend to run out frequently. I have been at Urbane Café since their first restaurant opened and have been to other locations. The food is consistently great; the staff is professional, friendly and efficient. But the reason for this review is because of a hiccup in my catering order. I now see how this happened. I tried to order online picking the Ventura location. I had to end up calling corporate to place my order, and they were super helpful, honoring the code that wouldn't go thru online. Because I had ordered before with corporate, the order was sent to the Thousand Oaks location where I previously picked up a catering order. Oh, no! When I showed up at the Ventura location, my order wasn't there. The manager Fernando immediately went into solution mode. He understood I was on a tight timeline, no time to go to T.O. and had his staff make a very large order, and then "no charge" based on the issue. I was shocked and, of course, extremely grateful. That kind of service, and the complimentary no charge on top of that is unheard of in this day and age. Thank you, Fernando, Alyssa & Danielle, for making a very stressful situation all turn out just fine. I've been a customer since they opened this location over 20 years ago (the 1st one I think). It has always been a favorite, but the last few times (over the last few months) the quality just isn't the same. Portions seem smaller, and assembly is sloppy. If it is a cost issue, I would rather pay a bit more so the items stay consistent. I've also seen several reviews here dated from the last year that recount a similar experience, so it probably won't improve. read more

About a year ago I was standing in line here with my wife and I got into trouble because I don't know when to keep my damn mouth shut. I should be used to it, it happens all the time. I made what I thought was a fairly innocuous statement based on my observations during previous visits. I said, this is a woman's restaurant. My wife looked at me sideways and said what does that mean? She's a much bigger fan of Urbane Cafe than I am, and immediately I knew was stepping on her toes with my comment. I said look around, the place is busy, all the tables are taken, and there's only me and one other guy in the whole place. She said, so? I probably should have paid attention to the big flashing signs saying Trouble Ahead and looked for a conversational offramp, but I foolishly kept talking. It's this way every time, I explained. You rarely see men in here. And when you do, they're nearly always with a woman. It's super rare to see two or more men eating together here like at a normal restaurant. Soon as I said that last part I could tell by the expression on my wife's face I had gone way too far. Normal restaurant? So this isn't a normal restaurant!? You don't like this place? You want to go somewhere else? No, it's cool, I like this place, I truthfully replied. I'm just pointing out that it's a very woman friendly place. I was scrambling desperately to do Damage Control. I think it's great, I continued, for women to have a place where they can get salads and healthy sandwiches. I guess that sounded a little condescending or patronizing, or both, I don't know. But I knew it was time to shut up about it when she rolled her eyes. So I shut up. Lol. That was a year or more ago. Today I placed an online order for pick up. I love ordering ahead online and having the order ready when I get there. They were super busy, with a line almost out the front door, but because I had prepaid online I was able to walk right in, find my order and be on my way. I've found that my order is almost always ready before the time promised here. Usually by 5-10 minutes. That's good to know if you want to get ahold of your food while it's still warm. When I got home my wife asked me, was it all women inside? It's been a year since I made those ill-advised comments but she hasn't forgotten. Women never forget anything, especially ill-advised comments. I pretended I had no idea why she was asking and said, huh? All women? I just shrugged and said don't know, I didn't notice. But it was in fact almost entirely women inside. Lol. Just to be clear, I love the sandwiches here. Today I had a UC Banh Mi and it was freaking great! I usually alternate between that sandwich and the Turkey Cranberry Brie. Both are Fire. I've had their Ahi Tuna salad a few times too, and I loved it every time. When I eat here I feel like I'm eating healthy, but not like I'm eating health food, if you know what I mean. I think Urbane Cafe is kind of unique that way. I see it as a compliment to say it's a woman's restaurant. Based on my observations, it seems clear to me that most women are far more careful about what they eat than men. Not all women, of course. Plenty of women like unhealthy food too. But if you ask a man where to go for a healthy meal, you're likely to get a blank stare as a response. If you ask a woman, she'll likely say, Urbane Cafe. Looking at the glowing reviews, I appear to be in the minority in feeling quality at this location has slipped in the past couple of months. Prior to that it was definitely 5-star worthy. But of late, the sandwiches feel thrown together rather haphazardly, so they easily fall apart when eating (I'm looking at you Chicken Banh Mi). There also seems to be noticeably less aioli.
