I found Habit through my very helpful friends on Yelp. I have been going to the lovely ladies of Habit now for almost 4 years. Not only is the decor super chic, think hipster meets cozy but they are very good at what they do. Oh and you can book online so there is no awkward phone calls from work "cough, cough. I need a cough, bikini wax." I have been to all of the ladies but Anna is my favorite. She is funny and sweet and genuinely cares about each person that comes through the door. I actually look forward to seeing her each month (usually you don't look forward to getting your hair ripped out). Love Habit....it is really easy to book an appointment and it is in a great location. The prices are totally reasonable, too. Several of my friends suggested I go to Amanda...and she really is the best. She is incredibly experienced, knowledgeable, flexible, and understanding. She is also very funny and completely puts you at ease. She is extremely efficient, but very meticulous, as well. I have used Amanda for lash tinting, sugaring and waxing, and she has always done an excellent job. I have been going now for about six months...and purposefully waited to write a review to make sure my experiences were consistent. Sara is the only waxer I go to anymore. I don't have particularly thick or symmetrical brows but I like to maintain them thicker and even them out. She is the only person who has found that perfect balance for me. I've had too many mediocre experiences with my brows to know to stick to the best. Sara also introduced me to sugaring, which is bizarre and wonderful all at the same time. It reduced the small red bumps I usually get from waxing, was much quicker and less painful. And it's all natural, woot woot. I'm so lucky to have found Sara and this insanely cute shop! read more

true story: the first time I went to Carrie, she asked me if I had some white in me. She can tell my ethnicity through my pubic hair. That's when you know someone knows what they're doing and Carrie really knows what she's doing It is as if the waxing Gods have granted her a gift of the craft, and she's just plain good at what she does. I've been lucky to feel very little pain when I get waxed, but still, when you get hair yanked out of your skin follicles, we're bound to feel something... I walked out of appointment still giggling from our conversation and forgot that I was here to get hair removed. I love how this place doesn't have the 'doctor's office' or 'medical spa' kinda feel, when you start at the white spot on the wall waiting for the procedure to be done. Why, oh why did I JUST discover Wax Habit, a week right before I'm about to move out of town??? I've been going to BellaPelle for the past year because of the proximity to my job downtown--and when I recently left work, it meant that getting there to do the ol' Brazilian was more hassle than expected. I fished around yelp and daily candy for a new place closer to home, and came across Habit on Union St. Boy, was I missing out on one of the best places in town. I had Amanda (who is just about the coolest chick in the world) for a Brazilian, and while I admit that its NEVER a fun experience getting hot goo slathered and ripped out of your nether regions, Habit does a darned fantastic job of sympathizing with you and pampering you while it's done. When I first entered the place, Amanda greeted me with a huge friendly smile and asked what I wanted to drink--water, wine, chilled vodka... (Um, a salon that offers hard liquor? A definite plus!) The salon is impeccably decorated--sassy, sophisticated, with a touch of vintage beauty. Amanda offers me a warm lavender buckwheat neck pillow, and with that and my chilled vodka, I could not have been any more relaxed and prepared for the pain that was about to come... And of course it hurt (as usual) and of course I still hate doing it, but at least I've found a place that I love to go to do the thing I hate. read more

Top 5 reasons why I love Habit so much 1. Carrie is fabulous. She makes getting a brazilian, i wouldn't say fun, but definitely tolerable. She is hilarious and also helpful. She gave me a few suggestions on hair stylists this past time I went to get waxed! 2. Habit is sterile. I've been to a few other waxing places and every time I look back on it since going to Habit, I get extremely grossed out. 3. Making appointments are at at your fingertips! Online booking is simple and you are able to book two appointments at once. 4. Paying is very easy and stored on a computerized system. Also, the receipt is sent right to your email! 5. Pin the tail. Cute shop. I take a look every time I'm waiting for my appointment. Minor setbacks of Habit 1. Parking sucks. Duh it's the Marina 2. Since I moved back to the Bay Area I have put off finding a place to get waxed. Partly, it's much more expensive than San Diego and I haven't wanted to spend the money, but I also wanted to find a place I really liked. She literally has not only transformed my eyebrows, but has became a gem of a friend. I may be stretching it if I were to say I enjoyed my recent brazilian wax, but Carrie made the usually torturous experience much more enjoyable. She instantly made me comfortable and kept me sane throughout the process. She uses a variety of waxes according to skin and hair type and my wax lasted much longer than usual. I also splurged on a eyelash tint and I am HOOKED. My lashes are now luscious and black sans mascara. There is a reason why this place has consistently great reviews. If you have been hesitant to go brazilian or aren't thrilled with your current waxer, run to Habit! They do a fantastic job and I will be back! Habit may be a pain in the ass to get to, but it's well worth the trek to the Marina district and looking for parking an hour before your appointment! Definitely see Anna for all your lady part waxing needs! I followed her from another spa she used to work at, and the environment at Habit is much more conducive to a relaxing (well, as relaxing as a nether region wax can be) experience. Both soft and hard wax is used, which in my opinion is the safest and easiest way to ensure that any and all strays are gone. The space is totally cozy and professional and while you wait there is a super cute boutique to browse in. I'm an extremely picky person when it comes to where I'm going to get waxed, and after a couple tragedies of being burned and/or crazy eye brows, i went so far to fly to SD to get waxed...that is until i found Habit this afternoon on Fillmore. Carrie greeted me when I first arrived and offered me some vino which was very tasty. Then Amanda took me into the back to start my appointment. She was WONDERFUL!!! Such a sweet lady, and this was by far the most painless and easy/quick waxing experience i've EVER had. The location is cute, and right on Fillmore so its easy to get too. The sign is small, but its not invisible. The online booking for appointments is easy to use, and the emailed receipts makes life so easy!! I got a yelp account just to write this review because the customer service, personable staff, and excellent services provided here are top notch. I've been coming to see Carrie for her mad waxing skills ever since I got my first wax 4 years ago. Yes, that is a lot of information. Information you don't necessarily need to know... Not only is she a very likeable, articulate, and comedically endowed woman, she makes you feel as if you've known her all of your life. She makes you feel comfortable, tells you what she really thinks, and by the time you're being stripped, you forget why you're even there. A well-deserved glass of wine, soothing music coming from the speakers, tasty taffy treats in glass bowls, and retail items for you to browse throughout the shop - what else could you ask for from your waxing guru? So long ago it seems like a crazy amount of time, my girlfriend told me about this place she found called Habit. Cute name, cute place and the cutest ever owner, Carrie Maxwell. At the time, we had been on this crazy run of finding wax girls and having them move off to be yoga teachers or chase boyfriends or whatnot. We were in a bit of a esthetitician rut. We needed an intervention. So began the phase of Habit. And we are still here. It's been a while. And I'm no the kind of girl who shops... or goes... to the Marina or Cow Hollow that much. I'm a Western Addition, Haight, Mission kinda girl at heart. But damn if this girl is not worth a cross-town bus ride and a hike. It's not just the wax (which is always phenomenal). It's not just the service (which is always outstanding). You know, you just tend to either laugh or cry when someone puts you in a funny pose to rip off of your "bunny tail." I just moved to SF from LA and was so worried about finding a waxer in my new city who would cut the mustard. WELL, my expectations were completely blown out of the water at Habit. From the moment I walked up the steps, I literally felt transformed in the best way possible. The decor is truly unique and inspired and I felt immediately at ease. My waxer Carrie made me feel truly at home, offering me a glass of red wine in a beautiful vintage glass before giving me a sublime Brazilian. It had been a long time between waxings for me and this was as close to painless as I think is humanly possible for such a procedure. Carrie was just lovely and did a superb job -- she clearly loves what she does and I actually had a great time just chatting with her throughout the whole thing, as crazy as that sounds! Although I live in the Sunset, I decided not to scar myself for life by chancing a nail salon for my first bikini wax. I found Habit on yelp and liked not only their numerous 5 star reviews, but the fact that they specialize in waxing. The hype proved true as my experience was beyond pleasant from the easy online booking to the salt water taffy at the end. The location is quaint, the set up and decor making it feel homey and relaxed (or "not too sterile" as Anna put it), and the prompt offer of sangria or wine doesn't hurt either. Although I might have liked the room a little more dimly lit, it was clean and comfortable. Besides a little awkwardness on my part in the very beginning, Anna made me feel at ease, working quickly and keeping a conversation going to keep my mind off the hot wax between my legs. She thoroughly took care of me - from explaining everything in the beginning to the soothing coconut oil at the end. It was fast and definitely not as painful as I had prepared for. I walked out feeling wonderful and although a little pricey, it was certainly worth it. read more

I love that you book appointments online! I was able to find the perfect time to get a bikini wax the same day I signed up. And the place is wonderful. The waxing room was decorated with old boat pieces, coral, and antique pictures. It felt like I was at a friend's house instead of getting a wax. Overall, it was a great experience. After a friend's referral to check out Amy and her "sugaring," I decided to check it out. I've been a waxer for years, so when my friend explained that sugaring was better for my skin, can lead to permanent hair loss AND that it was less painful, how could I not? I'm so glad I did...I'm obsessed! Habit's main door can be easy to miss if you're not paying attention, but once you're inside and head up the staircase it's a super cute place. Amy couldn't have been better! She was so sweet and walked me through the process making me feel really comfortable the whole time. Turns out, my friend wasn't lying about the pain--it's still hair removal so it's not completely painless, but it really was just, maybe, a fraction of what waxing is! (Because it's not pulling your skin too!) Long story short, it's a little more pricey than where I used to go for waxing, but it's absolutely worth it and I'll definitely be going back in a few weeks! read more

Being new to Yelp, I thought of writing about the places I have loyally followed in the Bay Area. I must say Habit and Amanda were at the very top of my list. I have been going to Amanda for over 2 years now, having never had a regular esthetician before that. I now see her once a month, religiously. Even after moving out of the Marina and to San Rafael. Like some of the other reviewers, I can honestly say I look forward to getting waxed! Amanda has ALWAYS been extremely friendly, helpful and punctual, which isn't always the case. They have lots of options for appt. times, making it easy to squeeze in an appt after commuting after work from the East Bay. She always has a glass of wine or some inventive cocktail to offer too, to ease the slight pain of the process. Whenever I have had questions or wanted to try something different, I always have felt like I was in safe hands and have been advised about whether to or not to proceed with whatever idea I had. The sheer fact that I am coming into the Marina from either Marin or Alameda and fighting to find parking for every appointment, should be enough of an endorsement for Habit and Amanda, especially! read more

Before coming to Habit, I had just assumed that a brazilian wax would forever be the most painful experience of my life (I had 2 AWFUL experiences before Habit.) I have absolutely no pain tolerance so in my previous experiences the process lasted an entire hour. But Habit is different! Habit's atmosphere is calm and quaint; you're immediately relaxed. .Both Carrie and Bronwyn made me feel so comfortable. The entire process lasted only 20 minutes. I won't go anywhere else now! Carrie completely butchered my eyebrow and acted as if she had no idea how it happened. I get it, we all make mistakes, but own up to it. Don't act surprised, blame it on my eyebrows, say 'I didn't do it on purpose', and then ask if I have make up and if I know how to fill in my brows. It's not about the make-up doll, it's the fact that you totally hacked off part of my eyebrow and didn't own up to it. She dyed my eyebrows without asking in an attempt to fix it. Thank god I wasn't getting married the next day or leaving for a vacation. I also don't care for her sense of 'humor' by trying to make a joke about a 22 year old having sex with my husband?!? Or saying that I hate myself?? Wildly inappropriate commentary during most waxing appointments. I've gone to Carrie several times before and each time have come away thinking that the conversation was awkward at best. This time will absolutely be the last time. read more
