He was really helpful and let me try the coffee, Hathaway, since I was interested in buying a bag of coffee. He let me try it as an espresso and then made me a latte! Came by a couple times during our stay for great coffee. Cortado, chai latte, oat latte -- all were delicious. A mellow environment to hunker down with a book or meet up with a friend. Baristas were friendly and experienced. They've got wifi and a small selection of baked goods as well. How I heard of this place: When we told our once-local friend that we were headed to his hometown for the weekend, he suggested two coffee shops. This one was right down the street, and immediately became our first stop. Type of cuisine: Focus on coffee; pastries on the side. Ambiance: "Habit Coffee's original location in opened January of 2007 on the doorsteps of Fan Tan Alley, and it quickly became a hub for people who enjoy connecting with friends and the local community. Rustic and hand-built by friends and family, you'll find works from local artists on the wall, an event board keeping you on top of what's going on and a big rack of cool magazines to flip through while you drink your coffee." What I ordered: An iced mocha (with a touch of vanilla, their only additional flavour) for me and one for my husband ($6 each). What I loved: The intricate, slightly sweet, perfectly smooth coffee and real chocolate. Why I loved it: Outside of baristas that are full with an err of pretentiousness and unwilling to be helpful, nor pleasant in their interactions, the space is quite unique, the seating cool andhomemade, and the coffee certainly worth a return trip. Just a quick review here... we tried Habit this morning on our first time here in Victoria out of convenience because our air bnb is right here.. let me tell you...The coffee was hands down amazing. I just got a drip coffee and it was so velvety smooth !.. I was shocked at just how good the plain old drip coffee was so I would bet that all their drinks are fantastic. Habit is an established 'third wave' coffee shop that is situated among the vintage and hip shops of downtown Victoria. Serving espresso and filter coffee from Bows & Arrows beans (which are also for sale by the bag), alongside a small selection of baked goods (if there are any left...). I love the broken-in feel of the place, and of course I love the coffee. Maybe there are other newer third wave coffee shops downtown, but I'll continue to go to Habit when I'm in the area. read more

When I peeked into the minimalist expanse that is Habit, I felt ready for a bolts of disdain and boredom to shoot from the too-cool gaze of the hipster baristas, who look like they listen to bands that the bands you'll be listening to in five years are listening to now. Not so. After the striking interior (which looks like it was designed by a claustrophobe), the next impression I got was a warm welcome by a couple of baristas. When they heard I was from out of town, they gave me a cute little hand-drawn, photocopied card with local businesses that the shop recommends. When they heard I avoid gluten, they were happy to show me around their gluten-free options. When they heard I liked BBQ, they gave me very specific directions to a BBQ joint in town. Not only were the Habit baristas informative, they were also well-read. Along one wall is about 25 options for magazines to buy, or "HABIT COPY"-labeled copies to peruse. They ran the gamut from foreign affairs to interior design, but they were all interesting. The drinks themselves were scrumptious. The baristas had saved their disdain, and emptied it on the very thought of drip coffee. "We don't do drip," one said, "Want to try french press?" French press is all I do at home, and they do it fairly well here, though a little weak for my taste. Great vibe and authentic feel in an area so close to the main tourist hub. The baristas are friendly, the coffee bean quality great, and beverage preparation is top notch. I liked perching at the window with a good book, and intermittently people watching the trendy clientelle in and out of the store. I knew stepping in this was an extreme hipster joint. Beards, skinny jeans, big glasses, sparse layout... Felt like home ;) This has been my fave beans I've tasted in Victoria since visiting; they're super flavorful! Sorry, but I can't show Habit much love. Cafe itself is nice, has a relaxed atmosphere and a clean, modern look that hipsters love! My no love comes from an extremely watery and tasteless Americano. Tim Horton's/McD's coffee has more flavour than this. When the barista asked me how everything was, I just had to tell her the truth. She tried to explain that perhaps I wasn't used to the size - but what does that hafta do with taste? She looked shocked, but am I to lie if a coffee place can't serve a proper caffeinated drink? (To give you an idea, I've tasted coffee in Seattle and just visited Portland last year, stopping at Stumptown quite a few times.) I asked a friend who is local and he said that he prefers another cafe - which will rename nameless - and that he doesn't always love the coffee here, so I'm guessing that there may be a consistency issues here. I went to Habit every day during the World Soccer Cup. They showed the game on a big screen and although it got a bit too crowded (tiny space in the back), it was nice to talk to people about different teams and players and thus became a social thing. I was here for most of the games, so I definitely got a good overall impression, here are some pros and cons: Pros: -Coffee is pretty good. Nothing extraordinary, but pretty decent. -Although their selection of baked goods is very small, they do offer gluten-free pastries. They're quite tasty as well. -The place is a bit bare, but nonetheless has a lovely unique feel to it. They have nice art on the wall and a bunch of art magazines that you can browse through while sipping on your cappucino. Cons: -I love chai tea and theirs is awful. No doubt about that. If you want good chai go to Sitka around the corner. -The staff is looks grumpy and can sometimes be rude. Perhaps these baristas think that sleep is overrated? They actually look like they havn't slept and hate their job. They dont smile or say thank you, just a grumpy face look. Too bad. -They dont have wifi. Thats annoying. -And the last thing: they have no idea where the coffee comes from or processed. The workers here either they did not have their coffee in the morning or they are drinking shitty coffee. FYI: If you want to just drink coffee, you can come here, but know what you are ordering and do not ask questions otherwise it will reveal that the workers do not know their coffee at all. This is just mediocre coffee. I came in after being recommended by a few of the locals and thought I would get some coffee and coffee beans as souvenirs for my coffee-addict boyfriend. Since each small bag is about $15-$17, I thought I would ask the workers for a recommendation. Usually, coffee shops are great about this... but.. SERVICE: Either they were embarrassed because they don't know their coffee or they were just rude people.. or did not know they were coming off as rude. I've been to almost every "hip/trendy" coffee shop in the east and west coast (thanks to the boyfriend and coffee-addict friends) and have always gotten good insights into different coffees, suggestions or overall, received a friendly service. I asked one girl behind the register and she gave this rude look and admitted that she didn't know because the coffee beans were new so I asked the other barista and what he described each coffee as was different from the descriptions on the bag. I, then, asked the final girl if she had any suggestions as well and with the most obnoxious tone said "we only have good coffee here so anything you get will be good." I tried to brush it off and not take what happened too personally... (trying to see it as me possibly misinterpreting their actions) But after we left, my friend said that she did not enjoy that coffee place and that they were very snobby (to her as well). She also thought her latte was just okay. My first 1 star review goes to this place.. I'm not good at giving 1 stars, but this was a pretty awful coffee shop experience and I haven't experienced this before. AMBIANCE: I admit that this coffee shop is very hip/hipster and I really enjoyed the decor and coffee feel, just not the people who were making it. Oh, good God this coffee shop rocks!!! They have all the ingredients for being an outstanding coffee shop for me..... 1)FANTASTIC soy lattes...great bold but not burnt flavor with a little carmelly note and they came in a cool glassware, not ceramic like usual. Great creamy foam with a nice applique design on top. I believe they carried Intelligensia (sp?) beans. 2)cool vibe going on the store, nice art, clean and bright 3)nice,helpful baristas with good attitudes and more perks... a great area to read their nice assortment of magazines that you could buy if you desired. and they are "friends" with the restaurant next door, Mole, so that when you need to wait to get in to Mole, you can wait in Habit. Habit's new location in the Atrium is a great addition to the neighbourhood. I was never a fan of their Pandora St. location, it was just too hip and uncomfortably austere for me. However, their new cafe in the Atrium is much more comfortable, not quite warm, but definitely welcoming. I work just up the block so I appreciate having a close source of good croissants and good coffee. Habit on Yates has unfortunately continued their Pandora St. practice of serving lattes and cappuccinos in glasses rather than ceramic mugs. Like I said, hip, not comfortable. However I am now having macchiatos much more often than lattes, and Habit uses ceramic mugs for machiatos, so it's now somebody else's problem. Their croissants are from Fol Epi in Vic West whose croissants are in my opinion tied with Bubby Rose's for second best in Victoria (no small accomplishment). One more thing: all my talk of austeriy and of coffees served in glasses could lead one to the assumption that the staff might be a bit of pain (think Cafe Fantastico), but nothing could be further from the truth. Every time I go into Habit I am greeted with an honestly friendly smile and a helpful atitude that woould have me coming back even if they didn't do such a fantastic job of making coffee. read more

If I was rating Habit strictly on the quality of its espresso, I would have given it five stars. Habit has become my must-visit source of quality caffeine every time I'm downtown. The baristas are really friendly, and I love perusing a magazine or two as I down my latté. So why only four stars? As someone who spends an almost excessive amount of time in coffee shops (I'm a freelancer, so coffeeshop = office), I tend to place a pretty high value on the availability of comfortable seating and overall ambiance. Since Habit's seating is mainly high bar stools or benches along the wall, it's not exactly the perfect setting for working or for lengthy conversations with friends. My husband and I are a little spoiled when it comes to good coffee [and beer, for that matter] as we live in Seattle and Portland. Habit did not let us down. Serious hipster vibes coming out of this place but don't let that scare you away. I came in here for an Americano and was pleasantly surprised by the friendly staff and the quality coffee. I am not a coffee connoisseur but it was nice and strong. I didn't try any of the food but it looked OK from what I can tell but I'll probably just stick to the coffee. The seating is quite minimal but there are outdoor seats available so a great place to hang and catch up with friends on a sunny day. I don't think they have wi-fi since I couldn't find a signal but I could be wrong... The price for their drinks is comparable to other coffee shops in the area. Good coffee shop but not what I would rate as exceptional. I tasted the mocha - which I was very unhappy to discover was made with a flavour additive. When you're making barista quality beverages you should be using real flavours in your drinks, not syrup out of a bottle. The taste suffered greatly - I could barely even taste the espresso. The atmosphere is quite nice. Good background music, not too loud so having a chat over a cup of coffee is easy and enjoyable. Comfortable seating, warm lighting, clean tables, and an overall coffee house theme. The shop has promise, but I'd like to see every beverage made better - a real barista, $5-cup-of-coffee-quality better. They could learn a thing or two from my hometown favourite, Transcend Coffee. read more

Best coffee in the city. I get lattes because that`s my preference and they are delicious. I live across the street and I am within a block from about 6 other coffee places that don`t ever get my business because Habit gets it every time. You can also bring back in your take out cups and they`ll recycle them which makes me feel like an environmentalist. A couple of times I`ve had pastries from there and they were also fantastic. Excellent coffee shop. Recommended on our visit by the people at Ditch Records. Besides coffee they have all sorts of vegan brownies, muffins, etc. The decor is very modern with those high barstool height chairs. Great place to work. I bought a book by a local artist off a rack there and the guy behind the counter, for some reason thinking that I personally knew the artist, told me about a birthday party the artist was going to be having later that day. I didn't end up going, but it really made me feel welcome in a town that I just happened to be visiting. So...five stars definitely! read more

I recently visited Victoria with my girlfriend, and the first place we wandered into was Habit -- a cute looking place to get a coffee and a sense of the town. We were absolutely blown away by the fantastically friendly and helpful service, the great coffee, and the wonderful snacks. The place was wonderfully friendly, and Shane not only poured us some fantastic drinks (the cappuccino was excellent and the french press coffee was very well done) but he also took the time to give us some insight into the town and the area. I really appreciated the friendliness and attentiveness. We also tried an oatmeal cookie covered in dried fruits and nuts and a little sesame concoction, both were delicious. All the food seemed creative and well thought out. And to top it all off, there's fantastic artwork, a bright airy feel, and an excellent selection of alternative magazines for sale, with Habit copies for people to read while they're caffienating. I highly recommend this place to anyone and everyone. read more
