The interior is well decorated, but there's no hiding the fact that it's on a busy street, making it one of the tea rooms with the least interesting views. Good selection of tea and it was fine. They seemed average, not bad, but don't really stand out either. I appreciated that they had a variety of choices for food including a gluten-free option. The quality of food was again okay. Nothing was bad, but nothing was great either. They toast the bread for the sandwiches is I personally don't like because by the time you get to it, it's cooled down, so it's a little hard without being freshly toasted. White Heather Tea Room is the highest rated Afternoon Tea in Victoria and came highly recommended on social media. We decided to visit for the special meal of our recent trip to Victoria, making a reservation at opening on a Thursday morning. It turns out in the off season a reservation isn't necessary - it never got too full during our 2 hours lounging around and slowly nibbling on food and sipping on tea. The staff are exceptionally pleasant and attentive, constantly refilling teapots and checking on customers. I especially love that when they bring out the tiered tray, they automatically ask for a phone to take a photo! Signature Muckle Tea ($66 CAD per person) - This firstly comes with three tea choices. Given how Brits traditionally drink tea (e.g. with a lot of sugar and cream), we were a bit skeptical with how this afternoon tea would work. We wanted three vastly different types of non-blended teas (ideally a selection of green, black, white, oolong, and puerh). White Heather does serve the first three types of tea. We figured black teas would be safest given brewing temperatures and times. Pai Mu Tan - Very, very subtle flavor. In fact I would say that even after several minutes of brew time, it only tastes like boiled water with slight astringency. But then after another couple of minutes becomes exceptionally astringent and very difficult to drink. A very finicky tea that probably isn't a good choice for afternoon tea. Orange Pekoe - Strong bold malty flavor without much in terms of fruitiness. Does become quite astringent as it becomes more overbrewed, but it takes a while before getting to that point (we also lifted the tea bags as much as possible out of the water to prevent overbrewing in the first place) Sencha - Exceptionally grassy fragrance making it very pleasant to drink. It holds up very well and never becomes too astringent or unpleasant. Surprising given how bitter it gets at home when I brew it at too high temperatures or for too long. Second brew doesn't give much flavor though. Given how many bites came on the three layer tower, I'll only be giving sparknotes rather than my usual full analysis. The waitress recommended eating from bottom tier up. Plain Scone + Raisin Scone - Both exceptionally fluffy and tender, easy to split in half. Served nice and warm with cream, lemon curd, and berry jam. Cheese Croustades - Interestingly different colors on the shell, one being much darker than the other. Both tastes and textures are the same though, being flaky but very hard and almost crunchy. Inside is a cheese mixture, tasting mostly of cheddar with mayo (similar to pimento cheese sans pimento). Some slivers of almonds on top. Mini Quiche - Really soft and buttery tart filled with sun dried tomato and topped with red bell pepper and what seems to be ricotta cheese, although given it's quiche is probably egg. Ham Pinwheel - Simple ham salad flecked with celery, red bell pepper, and pickles on flattened and rolled up sandwich bread. Not salty. Egg Salad Pinwheel - Similar to above, but with egg salad and pimento stuffed olives. The olive gives a welcome hit of salinity. Salmon Sconewich - Really sweet, possibly brown sugar glazed smoked salmon in a somewhat cheesy herbaly scone, tender and spread with cream cheese. Too sweet for a savory dish in my opinion, even with the stuffed olive on top. Cucumber Sandwich - Double decker sandwich, thinly sliced cucumber, tangy cream cheese spread on rye. Soft and fluffy, cucumber almost melts in the mouth. Chocolate Mousse - Delightfully rich and thick, definitely a high quality chocolate mouse given the texture and depth of chocolate flavor, graced with half a raspberry. At this point I was so stuffed that I couldn't eat another bite. I left the rest of the desserts for later (ended up eating them for dinner). Macaron - Really sweet and raspberry fruity, super soft, fingers easily break the surface with a light touch. Raspberry jam in the center of an Earl Grey cream, very sweet so my first few bites I couldn't get the bergamot flavor, but it comes out eating the frosting in isolation. Carrot Cake - Super dense, moist crumb with plenty of carrot flavor and some crushed walnut to break things up. Not too sweet. Tangy whipped cream cheese topping, light not heavy. Caramel Mini Cupcake - Denser bake but moist crumb, tastes more like vanilla than caramel to me. The cream on top perhaps has a hint of caramel? At least, it doesn't seem to be straight sugar. Lemon Tart - Super soft pastry shell with the same lemon curd as with the scones, then topped with cream. Scottish Shortbread - Very crumbly and buttery sweet dessert. Rich and delicious. I'm at the character limit so I'll just say this - White Heather gives a fantastic Afternoon Tea experience. It's a splurge that I certainly think was worth taking. We had high expectations when we made a reservation at the White Heather Tea Room. Victoria has so many amazing teahouses and the standard is definitely high. Unfortunately, this time we left slightly disappointed. The teahouse itself is in a pretty location, but the view from the front windows is just of the street and nearby houses. The interior is highly decorated and it was fun to see all the varieties of tea cups and tea pots displayed on the walls. We opted for the full tea service and they were very kind in accomodating a couple food substitution requests. They have a wide selection of teas, but once the tea was served we didn't get much information regarding how long it had been steeping (or if we wanted milk or sugar) and we guessed wrong and the tea turned out quite bitter. The savory sandwiches were nice - especially the ham pinwheel - but the dessert tier was lackluster. Each item was very sweet and without much other flavor. I opted not to eat most of the desserts and didn't bring the leftovers home. Service was nice, but felt a little rushed at times. I think it's a great spot for a princess tea, but other locations like Abkhazi Teahouse and Afternoon Tea at Butchart Gardens are a better bet for an authentic afternoon tea experience. This is the fourth time I've been to this location and third review. I absolutely love this place. It's what a tea room should look like.The service is impeccable and everybody is in a great mood while they are there. The last time we were at the tea room was in November 2022. It is the first time that we've actually been during the summer months. What a great place to spend a portion of your afternoon having high tea and great pastries and little sandwiches. Our server was Sloan. Very nice young man. He wasn't at the location the last time we were there. He made it fun, though. He knows his teas and what they serve at the tea room. We had Darjeeling tea. It is lovely. Everything was lovely. The Big Muckle is $60 (Canadian) (and as of this writing about $45 US dollar a person) and worth every cent. What an adorable and delicious place. We were given a warm welcome as soon as we entered and were seated at a window table. Our server brought us the tea menu, and honestly, it was such a hard decision. I had the western berry and my husband had earl grey. The tea was piping hot and hit the spot on a cool day. We had the Signature Muckle for two and it was three levels of scrumptiousness. Hot scones with jam, clotted cream, and lemon curd, mini quiches, five kinds of out-of-this-world finger sandwiches and desserts that ranged from carrot cake, to lemon tarts, to chocolate mousse, to cookies, to crème brûlée. This was the first time we've had high tea and we're so glad we found this lovely little place. The service was top notch, the food melted in your mouth, and the tea was a great tummy warmer. This place was amazing. It's cute and quaint and owned by a mother and daughter. The variety here was amazing and everything tasted superb, it's also more affordable than the empress. They also have two December tea specials and they were great as well. The Holiday Finale cream puff was out of this world amazing!!! Afternoon Tea at The White Heather Tearoom was part of our 40th wedding anniversary celebration. When we honeymooned in Victoria 40 years ago, we missed out on the afternoon tea experience so this was a MUST-DO this time around. I was able to make a reservation online at their website and received an email reply early the next morning, confirming availability for the time l desired. At the time of reservation I requested the Muckle Tea for a party of Two, and as they requested on their form, notified them of an allergy to artichokes (not a common allergy, I'm sure. Based on the online photography at their welosite, the ambience and decor met expectations- it was light and airy, yet cozy and comfortable. The staff was welcoming and seated us immediately, and acknowledged/confirmed allergies, as well as our request for the Muckle Tea. Every single aspect of our experience was lovely from the beautiful presentation, the china teacups, to the flavors of our tea selections. My husband enjoyed the Angels Dream and I chose the Balmoral. Every morsel on the three tier tray was delicious and freshly prepared with great care and attention to detail. RIP OFF - OVER CHARGED LUNCH PRICES I was there with my friend recently and was very disappointed on their choices of lunch menu options and prices! I ordered a very small sconewich (chicken and apple salad) with soup and my friend ordered a salad and to be charged $29 is incredible ridiculous. Menu said choice for dessert is "slice of cake/dessert bar/2 cookies" but we weren't offered a choice, waitress just bought out a small roll cake and 1 shortbread cookie. Even though we were already pretty full from having lunch elsewhere, we really wanted to squeeze in an afternoon tea experience on our short trip to Victoria so we looked up online reviews for alternatives to the Empress Hotel afternoon tea and voilá, the White Heather Tea Room popped up on our search! It's a small, cozy tea room, and yes although there aren't any marina views, the food and service makes up for it. We got the wee tea set that was just the right amount of food since we weren't too hungry. Both the Mad Hatter and House blend teas were great, and we enjoyed sipping it out of the fine China tea cups. I especially loved the chive onion and chicken salad scone as well as pinwheel sandwiches. Was delighted to learn that the owner was trained at Le Cordon Bleu and has lived across the world in Australia, Singapore and finally made Victoria BC home. Pricey but completely worth the experience. Here's why I loved this place: 1. Easy booking - we called ~5 days in advance and there were plenty of openings. We were running late on the day of our reservation and tried to push back our time; reservations were completely full for the day but we still managed to complete our afternoon tea within the 90-min time limit (we arrived 15 min late and spent about an hour there). 2. Food was of course amazing. Every single item. Upon sitting they offer you a tray full of dry leaf samples in which you can smell and choose for tea. I especially liked the jasmine tea. We then ordered the Big Muckle, which I highly highly recommend. The bottom layer starts you off with a variety of scones, quiches, and cheese bites. They provided whipped cream, lemon custard, and raspberry jam to eat with the scones. The next layer then fills you up with sandwiches and smoked salmon bites among others. And finally the dessert layer to top it off. Each sampler had a piece for every person. 3. The presentation was what really made this experience so enjoyable. Each teacup was so adorably elegant and we were seated next to the windows to enjoy the natural lighting. We went there for Thanksgiving weekend. What a fabulous afternoon tea! We have been there many times but that day was especially special with the theme of Thanksgiving. The muckle was a culinary experience which I have never experienced for afternoon tea. The carrot/pea panna cotta tasted like a wonderful carrots and peas dish and the turkey roll was like eating the traditional turkey dinner with cranberries. We had a wonderful experience here for tea yesterday! Our family of four, two adults and two kids, made a 1:30 pm reservation. The hostess was so kind and welcoming when we arrived a bit early. We were quickly shown to a table and given menus. Since we needed to provide an approximate idea of our order in our reservation (to assure enough food was on hand, I'd suppose), we had already taken the time to glance at the menu online. After reading other yelp reviews, it seemed apparent that the Big Muckle was the way to go for the average adult without food allergies or sensitivities. This ended up being a great choice for the two adults and the older kid in our party. The youngest ordered a "wee tee" which came with fewer items on the tiered tray and only one pot of tea as opposed to the three allowed with the Big Muckle. The items on the trays were varied and delicious. Of special note was the candied ginger shortbread!! I would hands down order a whole shortbread in this flavor another time! Also, the Angels Blend was fabulous and delicious. We were so taken with it that we bought some loose leaf bagged tea to take home with us. There are a great many Tea rooms on Vancouver Island, but this is one of two we enjoy most! The other of course is the Dining Room at Butchart Gardens, which you cannot miss on any trip there. And yes, the Empress does a swell job as well. But it is here, in Oak Bay we come after window shopping along their high street to enjoy a relaxing afternoon of high tea. We try to sit near the window and watch as time passes us by and the sweet taste and smells of the tea start their work on our senses. As fellow Yelp'er Tani S. has noted, it is like you are in someone else's home and not a tea shop or restaurant. We prefer the easier Queen Mary blend, but all of the choices are good ones. Gob-smacked! Absolutely perfect in all ways. We stumbled across this tiny place accidentally; luckily we were early in the day (outside of tourist season) and we got in without a reservation. You NEED a reservation. We opted for single dishes of soup and seafood crepes. And, of course, we each selected our own tea flavour. The soup and crepe came with orange slices and cheese biscuits. The place is so quaint with china teacups and saucers at every setting, and teapots on a shelf above the eating area. Very comfortable even for the two of us with mobility issues. Your stay can be no longer than 90 minutes; this is well-posted. Lots of parking in the back. Easily located on the main drag in Oak Bay. Next time, we will do afternoon tea and order the "Giant Muckle for Two." Tiered plates of tea sandwiches and pastries. We could not stop commenting on how much we enjoyed our food and time here. We really didn't want to spend a fortune on it and saw on their website that you got alot of different items for the price. We had a hard time seeing the place from the street as it was located in a strip mall but once we parked and walked down the street, it was easily visible. OMG! Yelp scores again! We wanted the full British tea experience while in Victoria but weren't down for the $150 that it would have cost us at the Empress. This was so much better! The tea was a perfect pour. I had the Balmoral, fruity and juicy for a black tea blend - without being over-powering. My partner had the Mad Hatter.
