I bought a Groupon here for $39, which was supposed to be worth $100 (the person who cut my hair only charges $50, so I really hardly saved anything) I did get the deep conditioning treatment, which was really just 5 minutes with the conditioner and a hot towel. So disappointed in my haircut. I brought a picture, which the stylist checked twice. I ended up with a cut that looked nothing like the picture and which was definitely about an inch shorter than I wanted. I won't be back to this stylist and I won't be buying a Groupon here in the future. read more

When I go to a spa, I'm not only looking for the spa services to help me relax, but I'm also looking for a relaxing and calming environment. I just don't think Habitude has that in their spa upstairs. The first 'unrelaxing' experience was parking. There simply isn't any parking in the lot unless your appointment starts around 9am. If you want to find parking, you'll need to cross your fingers and hope there is street parking and that you enjoy parallel parking or you'll need to park across Market in the residential area. The next unrelaxing thing was their spa waiting room. It's right next to the area where all the employees check in. So, as you're sitting in your robe attempting to relax, you can hear talking and every now and then you can hear a SSHHH. In the waiting room, you're in the middle of the path where everyone comes to work. Now, how relaxing is that? Then, there is only one steam room (or sauna), which is co-ed. Please. How relaxing is that? If you're truly there to unwind and let go, the last thing you want is to be in a sauna with just a towel covering your naked body with the chance of some strange guy walking in. I must admit though, the services (massage and facial) there were great and yes, they were relaxing. If Habitude would have thought just a little more when designing their upstairs layout, the place would have been great. Bigger isn't necessarily better. read more

Okay really, if we had 2.5, this would be a 2.5. But they were nice so I'll be nice. Like many other reviewers, I purchased a Groupon. $50 included a brow wax, cut, and conditioning treatment. This was my first time here, so when I checked in I was lead up the stairs, to be told they had the wrong person, went back down the stairs, just to go back up because they had looked up the wrong person. Not a big deal in and of itself, but maybe a little off putting. The wax was great though, fast, easy, and not painful, just the way I like it. I may continue going to the Wax Bar in Ballard because it's just a little bit cheaper, and I love the cold blue light they use after your wax. Anyway, so why am I between "Meh, I've had better" and "A-OK"? Okay here we go. I have long hair. Super long hair that probably grazes the bottom of my back, and I was ready for a cut. I never think about maintenance, so yeah, some of the nappiness from the length is my fault. So when the stylist asked what I wanted to do, I told him I wanted to cut off about 5 inches or so, looked at his face, and said "hmm maybe we should go six inches". He told me okay, whatever I want, but hey I'm flexible, and I sensed that there could be something better for me out there, so I asked. By doing so, he had me stand up and turn around and say that my hair was starting to look unhealthy because of the excess length. Okay whatever. Just cut it. So after he shampoos my hair, (and I'm not sure if I received a conditioning treatment at this point), we go back and he starts cutting. There were a few things that threw me off. He didn't ask me where I part my hair, he didn't ask me if I wanted more layers, and he didn't ask me how I wanted it styled. He styled my hair to it's natural waviness which I NEVER EVER EVER DO! I go home to straighten my hair and... It's not layered. So yes.. he was fairly pleasant but a little condescending. I try to be a direct person, so I had to be honest to myself and appreciate his directness about my hair. But my god, I really wish he asked more questions about the style of my hair instead of harping on me about the length. Would I go again? I don't think so... I had upgraded to an elite stylist, and overall paid quite a bit of money in tip and upgrade plus Groupon. I feel like if I went to my normal (fantastic but expensive) stylist, and did a seperate wax, I would have been happier and better off. read more

I've had two cuts and colors with Sarah and they've both been awesome. My hair looks so fresh and shiny and is just what I wanted. The Aveda color products they use are really nice, don't smell all chemically and nasty. Sarah's prices can't be beat and she's also sweet and great to talk to, but she'll let you not talk and just fall asleep in the chair too if that's your thing. read more

I went here for a bikini wax a few months ago so this a late review. My waxer was friendly and habitude is a great salon. My experience was pretty much as good as last one until I woke up the next morning. Apparently the wax was too hot and had burned me. It wasn't super painful or anything but still...I called the manager and she refunded me the cost of my wax and she was very apologetic. 2 stars versus 1? It was easy to get a refund and my previous experiences there have been so pleasant. I may or may not go back there to get waxed again. read more

I'll preface this review by mentioning that i am not nearly financially stable enough to be frequenting spas and salons on a weekly basis, therefore my frame of reference is basically narrow. However, i have received massages at both the Downtown Gene Juarez and now Habitude in Ballard and therefore, i can compare. Habitude is a great retreat for that much needed relaxing but not pretentious spa treatment. Its relaxed, low key and its urban feel does not impose nor does it make you feel out of place. It is not as serene and peaceful as the Juarez, but it still exudes this sense of quite tranquility. I received their "Essential Full Body Massage" and it was heavenly. I loved that the masseuse consulted with me about my needs and areas that i wanted more work done on. For example, the night before i slept in my neck wrong and she spent and extra ten minutes just focusing on that area, and by God my neck was perfect by the time i walked outta there! They also allow you to chose an aroma that you want incorporated into your treatment, i recommend the Lavender....i nearly fell asleep! All in all the experience at Habitude was wonderful. It may not be as "high end" as the Juarez, but the massage experience had me fooled! read more

I recently purchased the groupon for the haircut, style, all over color and brow wax. I couldn't have been more pleased with my entire experience. My color is perfect and haircut is just what I wanted! My hair appointment ended a bit early and they were able to bump up my brow appointment, so I wouldn't have to wait. They even gave me a free makeup application at the end. I had a great time and I will be returning again! read more

They honored my return and I'll be sure to keep my receipts for future potential returns. I have never really been a fan of Aveda facials but I had a gift certificate so I thought I'd give Habitude a chance. There was nothing fundamentally wrong with the service per se, but I just really wasn't into the overall experience. First of all, before you even begin the facial, they take you into this box where they shine ultraviolet light on your skin and then while you're looking into the mirror, the aesthetician tells you all the stuff that's wrong with your skin. So basically you're given a guided tour of how damaged your skin is, which isn't necessarily something I need or want to know. I mean, I'm getting a facial, I realize my skin has issues otherwise why would I be there? The aesthetician was okay; she was kind of preachy throughout the experience, like "don't use water that's too hot, nor too cold, to wash your face." I told her I'd just had a baby and that my regimen had suffered as a result and she was like, well, if you get more facials you won't have these problems. Did you not hear me? I just had a kid. Facials are kind of not happening on the same schedule. I know skin care and I know what constitutes a good facial. She went to town on my pores but didn't even use steam beforehand? Thus the extraction process was way more uncomfortable and prolonged than usual. If you want a good facial, hit up the ladies at Medispa at Virginia Mason. They use Dermologica and you get a semi-massage as well. Much better value for money! I wish I'd used my gift certificate for a massage instead. read more

Worst nail services I've ever received. I bought a groupon for here for the essential manicure pedicure. When I got there I asked if I can get shellac on my nails even if they charged extra. They were baffled at my request and said it would take way too long and that they don't do shellac on toe nails. There was no one in the upstairs nail area and I had to sit in the little chair to get my manicure even though I was getting a pedicure as well... the manicure took an hour to do on its own. Then they finally sat me in the big pedicure chair without putting my feet in water or anything. My feet were on top of the tub and my feet were wrapped in bags. The pedicure took another hour so 2 hours total. The lady also kept asking me questions about what she was supposed to do and kept saying sorry and thank you for your patience. She seemed very inexperienced. When I was finished they charged me an additional $26 for shellac on my nails? Total $96 for terrible service and just one set of shellac. I still have very negative feelings towards Habitude since visiting them and writing this review 9 months ago. I looked them up in Groupon a couple of times and see that they are still running that very misleading ad that I complained about. And I've looked at competitor groupon ads and the ones I looked at, are very clear in describing exactly what you get. My biggest disappointment with Habitude was the owner/manager never followed up with me, didn't return my email, or message I left in person. She only took the time to report my post to Yelp. So I will not back off and will do everything I can to right this wrong for the sake of other customers. It is on my list of things to do, even reporting Habitude to the Better Business Bureau, etc. And I do intend to write a blog abut this experience with Habitude and post it on our website - that's just how much of a disgruntled 53-year old former customer I am. read more

I know I live in Seattle and so I have to experience a little "New Age, eastern BS" every once in awhile. But it was a little offputting when going to get a massage to first have to pick a certain card, which is one of the "seven" core centers of the universe (or something along those lines). And then hear their philosophy on how am I'm connected to everything mumbo jumbo. But the massage was good and the gal was friendly. Overall, a good experience as a massage should be. Took my sister to have her first EVER pedicure -- this was a big deal for her. She was worried because she has some toenail fungus (as do I --- for 5 or 6 years now). When she took off her shoes, the technician wrinkled up her face and went "Ewww - we can't work on you!". She acted like my sister was a leper, or had dog doo all over her feet or something. I have spoken with the manager, who has informed me all about the "Washington Code" -- offered to give me the site where I could read it. I have had many, many pedicures over these past 6 years -- in upscale spas in Europe and several places here in Seattle -- had one less than 6b months ago at a very upscale (and expensive) spa in San Francisco -- always pointed out my toenails, & never had an issue. I understand if they are following this "code", but they should, in my opinion, do 2 things: 1) In EVERY description of a pedicure on their site, they should spell out directly that they will not serve someone with toenail fungus (it's very common) OR at least supply a clickable link to this "Washington Code" 2) Train their technicians to treat people with RESPECT --- be professional, compassionate and KIND. No one should be treated the way we were treated -- my sister was in tears when we got to the car, and I'm sure will never try this again! In the past, I've had haircuts, massages and (yes) pedicures at Habitude -- this technician has made sure that doesn't happen again. To top it all off --- Habitude redeemed my Groupons!! I recently purchased a Groupon for three services at this salon and was skeptical about my experience after reading some of the reviews here on Yelp. I have to say, the staff, facility and quality of services exceeded my expectations. I had a 60 minute massage with Bridgette that was one of the best I've ever received. The aesthetician who performed my facial was knowledgeable and my skin looks radiant. The hair service I received was also very good. I'm writing this review from the perspective of a group spa party and as a former long-time employee. I came with a work group, as we were given staff appreciation gift cards for a spa day (!). Oddly, the worst aspect of our experience was my interaction with the Spa Director, Kathleen. Their policies around booking groups have become very unfriendly. In my opinion, you'd think group appointments would be a good thing! More customers = more money. First they require a credit card to secure the appointment, even though ours were backed by a gift card already. I don't care to give out my credit card info to random spa receptionists, personally, and I used to be a spa receptionist. Second, they tack on a 20% tip for groups of three or more. Huh? Gratuity for a spa service is so subjective. My auto 20% tip came to $53!!! Sorry, but there is no way in H*LL I would volunteer to leave that much for one person for two hours. That's more than I make per hour! Anyways, I digress. I wrote the Spa Director an email asking what gives with the tip policy, seeking a thoughtful reply. Instead what I got was a brisk and sneer answer informing me that our services were confirmed (in case I was going to cancel?) and that most (yes, she wrote MOST) people choose to leave MORE than the 20% they force you to give. Oh please. Despite this initial unpleasantness, I have to admit that our spa day was lovely. And I was on the look out for flaws, having worked there for such a long time. Everyone in my group had a great time and no complaints with the services. I took advantage of a FREE blow dry in the salon following my spa service. Love that. The exorbitant pricing precludes me from going back on my own, but it was a nice day all in all. read more

What a bummer! Find fabulous new colorist - all excited, hair looks great, then I get to check out counter at the end and tab is $100 more than quoted! I knew the colorist kept calling it a color repair, but she also said she had done 3 other color repairs that morning, so I figured that was her thing for recoloring roots. First, I loved my color and there was nothing to repair but my dang gray roots! Second, I don't appreciate the little scam to charge more because by calling something a "repair". Oh, Habitude. Constantly wooing me back with your walnuts, cranberries and Groupons. The four star status is given with consideration to voucher pricing, as it seems that Habitude offers Groupons/Living Socials every few months. So before I proceed, I must be clear that I unfortunately would not pay full price for most of the services here. This is in no way a reflection upon the quality of services other than they are very standard, so that they are marked up so much more than other salons and spas does not seem warranted. Know that the pedicure, for example, at $64, is the exact same pedicure you are likely to receive at a local salon for $35. I realize that the price differential is attributed to the availability of spa amenities (sauna, showers, dried fruits & nuts), so just keep this in mind when booking, and perhaps allow yourself some time to take advantage of them. So with that said, the service providers/aestheticians are all solid; my favorites are Sabrina and Jen for massage, etc., and Hulu for nails. All three of these women are very knowledgable and professional, and they do a great job providing a wonderful experience. A final point worth mentioning: I have received "mixed messages" about the best way to book voucher services. I already had an account for online booking prior to purchasing my first Groupon, and I asked Habitude at the time if it was okay to book voucher appointments online and they said it was fine as long as I called right before my appointment to provide the Groupon number. Fast forward a number of months, and when I followed this procedure, I was snippily told by the front desk that this procedure is frowned upon because they have to collect 'additional information' at the time of booking and it is handled differently. The gentleman with whom I spoke was borderline rude and made me feel like a chastised child. Imagine my surprise when I looked back at the fine print of my Groupon to make sure I hadn't violated any of the rules and I found a link to their website and encouragement to follow it to book my appointment. It seems like there needs to be some consensus reached among the staff and communicated to Groupon, and in the mean time they should stop blaming clients when they are not breaking any rules. Other than that, I have never been treated differently as a Groupon customer, though, and always make a point tip generously on the full prices of services because I don't think any of the issues I may have with Habitude are the fault of the aestheticians. read more

Wowza - what an experience! My boyfriend got me the LivingSocial (massage, facial, sauna, smoothie, etc) deal for my birthday. Granted I had to wait nearly 4 months to get the appointment (was a very popular deal), but the wait was well worth it! Gorgeous decor created a relaxing experience from the moment you stepped onto the 2nd floor. The lovely concierge explained everything that would be occurring during my appointment and gave me a little tour. This was great, having never been into Habitude before. I sat in the little waiting room and munched on cranberries and almonds. The massage was great - she took her time finding out what I needed most and definitely gave me what I wanted. And the facial - oh. my. dog. what a delight! Had never had one before, and will definitely be going back to see Ionna. She recommended a couple products to use at home (naturally), but they're great and I was happy to give them a try. I will definitely be going back to Habitude - with or without a gift certificate. I think the only thing that could have made the experience better would be to have a girlfriend along or something. read more

I usually only come to Habitude for the waxing services, they're awesome! I feel welcomed, I get a little education, personable experience, but I went here for a haircut and... Not so good. I'm not sure if it was just my luck, or if I chose a really hard do (inverted bob) but I had to go back twice to fix it. First experience was with a 35$ stylist, she didn't even come close to accomplishing the inverted bob, and when I tried to tell her (after she had finished) that I wanted it higher in the back, she told me she didn't have time and that I should sleep on it and call if I'm actually wanting it shorter... Ruuuuuude. I couldn't believe her response! Don't treat me like a child, I know what I want. I cried, the cut was so horrible. I called that night and asked to get it fixed, they were very nice about everything and seemingly fixed it. I wear my hair curly, so I didn't notice until I straightened my hair (about a week later) that the right side angle and length was significantly different and longer than the left side. Uuuugggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Awkward! I didn't want to go back, really. I just wanted to go somewhere else and have them fix it, but I was asked to come back and the head stylist fixed it for free. I felt bad, really. I don't like to complain, but I can't walk around with a lopsided do! I appreciated their customer service, and the effort to make me not feel awkward about having to come back again. I will be returning for waxing services, but I don't trust them with my hair anymore. The scalp treatment lasted all of three minutes, causing me to think I didn't have it yet, but by the end of my facial, it dawned on me the scalp treatment took place at the end of my massage. I see Kailey at Habitude for brow tinting and waxing. I've been going to see her for over a year now and I will never go anywhere else again! When I used to get my brows done elsewhere, they would be red for hours after, and I would even have breakouts sometimes. That is never a problem for me anymore, as Kailey knows exactly what she's doing and uses products that work perfectly on my sensitive skin. She always does such a great job, and I've never left without feeling beautiful and 100% happy. I get a ton of compliments on my brows, and I owe it all to Kailey! read more

I wish I could give this place a good review but I just can't! It's a cute place, I can say that. I bought the LivingSocial deal for a cut, style, makeup touchup and 10% off. I got a cut and that's it. I figured straightening my hair would be counted as "style" but I guess not. Instead, I had to pay $10 for it (which I wish I had known beforehand...I've NEVER heard of a place charging for straightening? Like were you just going to send me out with blow dried, puffy hair....?). So really I paid $45 for something I could get done anywhere for cheaper. Not even a good straighten! I needed it for an event tonight and I just had to spend another 30 minutes ACTUALLY straightening it. The woman was fairly rude and none of the other staff were friendly toward me at all. No smiles or anything. The cut isn't good either - uneven ends and she didn't even take the split ends off entirely which was the whole point of coming here. So disappointing. I have never written a review before, but signed up just so I can say how great James is. I wanted a last minute color and ended up seeing James at Ballard and I couldn't be any happier! He obviously knows his stuff and I ended up with the best full foil (blonde) I have ever had. It looks so natural! James took his time making sure it is evenly distributed and that I can put my hair up without having streaks underneath. This is saying a lot since I have thick hair and a lot of it, so it took him forever. Also, he is not overly chatty - something I appreciate - so I got to relax with some magazines while he did his thing. Even though I said all the "wrong" things trying to explain what I wanted, I walked out with my hair looking exactly how I wanted it! He is awesome!! Will be a returning customer for sure! read more

I called about potentially making an appointment for a set of spa treatments they offer through Groupon. I inquired about whether they had availability during a specific week that I would have off of work, because the Groupon is only valid Monday-Friday, and I work full time most of the year. I was told that they would call me back with availability, and proceeded to never hear back. I would have appreciated better customer service. If there are no appointments, call and tell me since you got me off the phone by saying you would do so. If you're going to blow off customers trying to book Groupon services, don't offer services on Groupon. I'd heard from an acquaintance within the past year that the quality of Habitude has been on the decline, but based on their website, and the customer service I received while booking, I wasn't too worried. I don't think my stylist had very much experience, or else hadn't been vetted properly, because I ended up with one of the strangest haircuts I think I've ever received. She tried to cut a long bob, which was what I asked for, and began initially by bringing my hair forward and cutting it at an upward angle. But about half-way in, she seemed to either forget where she was going, or change her mind, because she proceeded to frame layers around my face. What ended up happening, of course, is that she sheared my hair into pixie-like point-ys, in places, so that my hair has been thinned excruciatingly, and looks as if it has not grown in properly. Nothing can really be done, as my hair has already been cut. As recompense, the salon offered me a a gift certificate to their spa facilities upstairs --(no thanks). Pretty annoyed. I sent the following email to Habitude through the email address on their website, their website form, and in response to their email soliciting feedback after my appointment in April. I have never heard anything in response. "I booked an appointment today for 6pm, for a stylist that charged $35 for a standard haircut. I received a voicemail this afternoon that my stylist needed to cancel due a family emergency, but that I had been rescheduled for 6:45 with a different stylist. I didn't have plans, so this was no problem. Mickey did a great job on my hair, and was very personable. This email should not reflect on him, his professionalism, or the quality of his haircut in any way. I was very unhappy to find that I was being charged $50 for my hair cut. I did not contest the price, because that is what he expected to earn for his time. What I am angry about is that when I was rescheduled, arrived, and paid, I was never made aware of this price increase. It was only after my card was run that the front desk told me the total price. This is an extremely unprofessional business practice. Despite my great haircut, I will not be returning to your salon." Seems like customer service practice and policies are lacking from this business. There are a lot of great places in Seattle to get a haircut. There is no need to go to this place. read more

In shock that Habitude is only a 3-star. I have been going here since I moved to Ballard over eight years ago. Awesome service - and I find it very relaxing/ spa-like. And, well, I pay $35 for a really good haircut (typically junior stylists but that's just insane pricing, I can't believe it when I hear of paying $75-100+ for a cut- in fairness, my hair is basic). They use Aveda and Bumble & Bumble products, it feels luxurious. I walked right in today (no appointment) and was very happy with the service, per usual. read more

I recommend her to anyone else with pin-straight, thick short hair, as I've only had a handful of people who were really good at cutting it. $45 for a haircut, which is a little steep. Meghan Mello is amazing in all aspects, especially hair. Today was my first visit with her after being referred by a friend at school. I had an overgrown 'do. Today was a gorgeous, sunny day and I was feeling sassy. I asked for bangs and extra layered layers. Lotsa fringe. Meghan delivered! She made me love my hair again. No more lazy, I can't do anything with my hair, ponytail days. She gives a super relaxing scalp massage using all of those Aveda smell good products. This is the first time I've kicked back in a shampoo chair and been offered an actual foot rest. Super comfy. She took time, was very specific in her cutting and told me what products she was using as we went along. Wish my hair grew faster so I could see her again sooner! read more

On my second try, I found a brilliant stylist and that's why I've stuck with this place. But in the past two years, it's really gone downhill, particularly in the area of customer service. Now, in order to check in, you have to stand in line behind all the people who are paying for service and products. This morning I arrived to check in and stood in line behind 7 people for nearly 10 minutes (it used to be a nice concierge checked you in an seated you in the lounge.) I LOVE this place. Why no 5 star rating? I got a hair cut at the Fremont location and wasn't wowed. It wasn't bad, but for the price I could have gotten it elsewhere. The massage is what was amazing. I got a 90 deep tissue from Eve a while ago and loved every second of it. I carry a lot of tension in my upper back and every time I see a therapist they can't get the knots completely out, that is, until I saw Eve. I actually HEARD my muscles release.....with my ears.
