Nestled in a strip mall, Hachi ramen was discovered during a yelp search for a ramen lunch outing in a Saturday. The positive reviews made Hachi ramen our go to for the lunch hour. The restaurant did a great job with social distancing and there were maybe 4 other parties still there. We were seated promptly at the bar and had attentive waiters ready to get our drink and food orders. They have combination plates as an option so I ordered the gyoza combo which included a good sized shoyu ramen (the other option is Tonkatsu), rice, and gyoza. You have the option to substitute for their Hachi ramen, chashu rice, garlic fried rice, etc for additional fee. Overall, the Shoyu ramen was good but on the saltier side, hence my 4 stars. The chashu was very tender and melted in my mouth which is a plus when considering how much I love ramen. The gyoza and karage (which my friend ordered) weren't as great in my opinion so stick to the ramen! I would definitely come back and try their Tonkatsu or Hachi Ramen. I usually tend to go to shoyu as my first visit as this is my go to for every new ramen place I try. Don't let the Phoenix heat drive you away from a hot bowl of ramen! read more

I'm sorry but this place was a HUGE no for me. In addition to it being hella hot when you walk in, the food was just meh. The waitress was up charging me on everything. I got a basic ramen bowl that was much smaller than average. The noodles that were on the menu were some fettuccine looking noodles. When I asked her for the regular ramen she said "oh like the ones in top ramen?" I was like okay? The food came out and it was 1/2 of a tiny egg, some nasty corn that tasted old and wilted, and some crunchy noodles. My son ordered the gyoza and the were burnt on one side and the other side was soggy and wet. They gave us some vinegar to eat them with and my son threw them away as soon as we got home. The server saw that my son took one bite and left them all there. I didn't want to be rude and took the box when she offered it. We also got two waters. my bill came out to $28. I gave the waitress $40 and she asked me if I needed change. I hate when servers do that! Like girl! Get real, I'm not going to give you a 45% tip for some nasty ass ramen and mediocre service. Yes! Bring me my damn change. She looked hella annoyed and only came back with $2 and a $10. Yup, guess her tip? I was quite surprised to find myself enjoying the ramen here as much as I did. I came for a post-shopping lunch on Black Friday with my mom. We came around 12:30 pm and were seated immediately at the last open table. Other folks who came later had to wait briefly for a table, so definitely seems to be a pretty hopping spot. We ordered the takoyaki ($6.50) to start. They came out piping hot with a generous amount of sauce and dried fish flakes. I'm pretty picky when it comes to takoyaki but the balls here were delicious. Perfectly mushy on the inside. For my main, I went with the Hachi special ($12.99) with tonkotsu broth. It comes with a very generous amount of bamboo shoots and dried mushroom, as well as a soft boiled egg and two pieces of chashu. There was so much of the bamboo and mushroom I had to give some to my mom. I really liked the chashu; it was fairly fatty so it melted in my mouth. There was also a surprising amount of noodles; both of us were struggling to finish at the end. My least favorite part of the meal was the eggs. They were cooked perfectly with a soft yolk but were surprisingly sweet. The flavor didn't go well with the rest of the bowl. Don't forget to check in on Yelp! This ramen place is tucked inside a strip mall. I picked it because of several reviews. The positives were no MSG, which is big for me and the noodles were thin and al-dente. The negatives were the century egg as you can see in my photo was effectively a dried shriveled powder ball which was disappointing but also the cleanliness of the facility was lacking. My ramen bar top was sticky and disgusting to eat off of. The men's bathroom was absolutely a wreck. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be going back as the cons outweigh the pros of this place. The menu was short and limited making it easier to choose the item. We ordered Gyoza combo with Katsu ramen, Karage chicken, a side of chilli paste, and another order of Tonkatsu ramen. The Gyoza combo came with a bowl of Katsu ramen (pork based), a side of steamed rice, 3 pieces of Gyoza, and some pickles. The Karage chicken was okay! Had better, the pieces were big though, hard to get hold of. Now, the ramen. The broth was flavourful, the noodles good, however, didn't like the egg, which was bit on the sweeter end (This was my first time having sweet egg in ramen). The service staff was polite and efficient; the interaction was a step above a typical a fast food restaurant. The takoyaki was mostly dough; I could barely taste or make out the tiny piece of octopus in each ball. The dipping sauce was too salty for me. Both my wife and I ordered the house special ramen. Both the times during my visit the place had pretty good number of people. Its like a quick sit, eat and leave kind of restaurant. I have tried their Shoyu, miso ramen and their appetizer Takoyaki. Somehow I am not very convinced on the taste of their broth. I liked Miso ramen but it had very less meat than what I would expect. My favorite of the three I tried were the appetizer. At first glance, it seemed small but once you compile your meal, it was more than enough. You get fresh egg noodles, slices of pork belly, a side of sprouts/green onions/corn, sweet soy egg, and fresh seaweed. This was my favorite. Flavorful and spicy but not heavy. Hachi Ramen Came here in a Friday night, really busy with people waiting to be seated but with just two were seated right away at the counter. Ended up it was a large party, which if there is more than five you maybe better off splitting up. Not to many tables to begin with and bigger groups not suggested on a busy night. Broth was good and especially liked it because it was not salty like other places. Ordered the Hachi Ramen and the Combination with Tonkotsu and Karage Chicken. The Hachi Ramen has about everything offered on the side, not sure what it was maybe the seaweed but did not care for the one particular item. I stayed in Tempe over the weekend and was craving some soup and noodles. I love ramen and noticed the rave reviews here so my husband and I decided to give this place a chance. Mind you, we are from LA, and have plenty of delicious ramen options. I noticed that the staff was not Japanese. That's not always a bad thing, but looking back it should have been a red flag. We also ordered a chashu fried rice and takoyaki as well. The appetizers came out first. Some of the takoyaki were still cold inside. The chashu fried rice barely had any pork in it. Also, it tasted more like Chinese fried rice than Japanese fried rice, which should have been a second red flag. After nearly 50 minutes of waiting for the ramen, they finally arrived at our table. The first thing both my husband and I did was taste the broth. The shoyu broth tasted like soup you get at a Chinese restaurant. The tonkotsu broth was a little bit better. The flavored egg wasn't quite right. The pork was a bit chewy. The best part of the bowl was the seaweed. The noodles I got were thicker than the noodles my husband got... the inconsistency was just strange. I really didn't like the food and the wait here. This is my second time eating ramen and this experience was much better then my first. Although my last visit was at another restaurant in another state.. We were quickly greeted and seated as we walked in. The two employees working were very friendly and attentive. We looked over the menu and we knew what we wanted. I wanted ramen with the chicken broth and the hubby wanted the spicy ramen. I added more bean sports, mushrooms, a side of the chili, and green onions to mine, while my husband ordered extra pork and noodles for his. We didn't have to wait too long for our ramen to arrive. I was in heaven. The bowl smelled delicious when it was brought out to us, and so we dug in immediately. The bowls looked small when they were placed right in front of us, but no, we couldn't even finish them! Portions are big and there is no need to order extra ramen as the bowl already has a lot. This is awesome ramen! I'm from Los Angeles and ramen shops are on every corner so I have a pretty good palate for what good ramen is. Hachi ramen delivers a very good ramen and probably one of the best ramen in the east valley. One thing I love about them is they make their broth daily and it's a nice clean broth. Add just a little chili oil.and soy sauce, it's perfect! The noodles are good but nothing special and the chashu pork pretty tasty. Honestly I really enjoyed the egg in the soup. It's a nice sweet taste with a perfectly cooked yoke. I can eat those all day! We also had the gyoza which is hand made on the spot and tasted awesome. I appreciated they give you vinegar for the gyoza. Love to have that vinegar with soy sauce blend for the gyoza. Finding a Ramen place that serves broth that's not pork based is challenging in the valley. Hachi Ramen offers a chicken based broth so my husband and I decided to give it a try. We were welcomed as we walked in and seated immediately. While browsing through the menu, we noticed that all the options had a piece of pork and pork fat in it. The waiter came to our table to ask us if we had any questions after he had served us our drinks. We asked about pork free options and he said they had the chicken broth and that they could skip the pork piece and pork fat. So we decided to go with that. The dish is served with an egg so I asked for mine to be without the egg. Since the dish now became just ramen, broth, green onions, bamboo-shoots and a piece of Nori, my husband was ok with that (with the egg). I decided to add corn and mushrooms to mine and I ordered a combo which is served with plain white rice, 3 fried boneless chicken pieces and pickles. We also ordered edamame and Takoyaki. While we waited for our food, I checked in on Yelp. As a thank you for checking in, they offer sesame balls for dessert if you order food worth $30+. The appetizers came out almost immediately. The Takoyaki was served with fish skin on top which I swear kept moving! Lol The dish had a distinctive and delicious taste. It's basically a rice ball stuffed with octopus. It was very foreign to us but tasty. I didn't try the edamame but my husband enjoyed it. Our bowls of Ramen came out shortly after that. They looked pretty good. I added some soy sauce to mine and tried it. It tasted good. We enjoyed the fried chicken. It had lots of flavor. While we were eating, the waiter asked us to let him know when we are ready for dessert and we marked the offer as used. When we finished eating, we asked for the dessert. 2 sesame balls were served. They looked perfect. When I looked up sesame ball recipes, I realized that the red paste that was in the balls was actually red bean paste. It tasted great. I came across this ramen place while searching for nearby ramen. I totally hit the jackpot! Living in Vegas we have some pretty outstanding ramen spots. Well Hachi, didn't fall much behind. I ordered the spicy ramen and asked for an extra scoop of the chile paste it was the perfect heat level. That second scoop really did it for me. I really enjoyed the added texture from the bean sprouts, surprisingly I haven't had that combo before. We decided to order mochi ice cream for dessert and that's where they fell short. The mochi ice cream tasted like it had been left in the back of the freezer for quiet some time, it tasted like freezer. I ordered from this place a few years back and really loved it! Fast forward to today and I am very disappointed. I just ordered from this place and my ramen had little to no broth. I thought it was a joke at first but seriously less than a cups worth of broth. I also ordered some gyoza and I didn't get any dipping sauce. PLUS, they were soggy by the time they were delivered so maybe don't order those to go like I did. Meh for all this time I've been in Phoenix I have struggled to find a good ramen place even including some of the most recommended restaurant like Tampopo or Hachi. I don't know if I should be comparing the quality to Japan but it's not even meeting other similar sized cities' quality such as San Diego or Seattle, even Portland had better Raman choices. The thing is, Phoenix has a lot of good restaurants and I never run out of recommendations of places for people to go but Ramen seems like a exception of this rule. Back to Hachi, service is fine and ramen is not bad. Egg is over done and not real 溫泉蛋 (onsen tamago). There's flavor but no 層次 (layers) in the flavors, it's just.. idk boring ? We heard this place from a group on Facebook saying this is the best ramen place here in AZ, so we had to check it out! The service was great, the food came out on time, and everything was very clean! We ordered the karage, takoyaki, and chashu fried rice for the sides. The takoyaki was the only one that had flavor to it and the rest was really bland. The ramen we got the Hachi special for both but one with tonkotsu and the with shoyu broth. The broth was so bland and very oily, and the noodles were soggy as well. So I could hardly eat it. The broth was flavorful with out being salty and good balance of sweetness with saltiness. The temperature of the broth was appropriately hot and steaming. The noodles were not overcooked. The flavored egg was well seasoned with the semi-translucent yolk. The bamboo shoots and good flavor and firmness. The takoyaki had a good ratio of starch and octopus and was very flavorful. Great place, I tried the shoyu ramen without mushrooms and was impressed. The only reason I give this place 4 stars is because of the way the seating is arranged. I was seated at the counter, and since it was busy during lunch hours, I was very cramped and felt that my personal space was being invaded by the two people on either side of me. They are reasonably priced, especially during lunch time. Great place to go if you work nearby and need some food that isn't Carl's Jr. or another fast food joint.
