Went to Hagan's Grille again last night! Jill, was our server again, and was very informative, attentive and cheery. Once again, both of our dinners were delicious. We got some bread fresh from the oven which was very good as well. I ordered the Oven Roasted New England Haddock, which came with the most delicious Parmesan Garlic Whipped Potatoes (and I am not really a fan of mashed potatoes normally), and asparagus. The fish was fresh, flaky, and delicious. My husband had the Grilled Rib Eye Steak with White Truffle Oil Pommes Frites (French fries). He said the steak was very tender, cooked perfectly, and was very flavorful. He also loved the French fries with the Truffle Oil. His meal also came with asparagus. The staff was quick to seat us. The server promptly took our drink order. The selection on the menu is diverse and adequate for any taste. The burger was decent, but doesn't seem fresh as it's perfectly round with 90degree corners and flat uniform thickness. The drinks are made well. The calamari was over cooked and devoid of any flavor. The crumb coating has zero flavor. Some items were "sold out", but we were told they sold out yesterday. How does someone sell out yesterday if their food is fresh??? The tables are clean. The linens are clean. The staff is usually nice, although they tell each other to "mind your own business" in front of customers. Who wants to see employees bicker in public? The food is ok, but for the prices, far more attention should be paid to freshness and flavor. I'd usually give this place 3 stars, but tonight, only two... We ordered takeout through gopher. It was very easy to use and accurate. The seared tuna was delicious and we wished we had a third order of it. The lobster ravioli was a big portion and the baked haddock came with asparagus and mashed potatoes. The braised short ribs came with the veg and potatoes also and had a tasty sauce. I ordered for delivery last night, I ordered the scallops wrapped in bacon as an app, I also ordered the lobster ravioli with the pesto red sauce. The scallops wrapped in bacon tasted like some sort of chemical, it was uneatable and disgusting! The lobster ravioli was actually good but the sauce was just ok, it didn't taste like there was any pesto in it and it kinda reminded me of Spaghetti O's sauce. There was no bread included which other restaurants have included when I have ordered Italian food. Needless to say I will never order or go to this place again. read more

Don't come here. I asked for my steak prepared with no seasoning but pepper. I wanted it blackened outside and warm center. I got meat done medium rare with thyme and who knows what other seasonings in addition to the requested peppercorns. The waitress and bartender provided excellent service. The owner removed $5 from the bill. I found the single unisex bathroom a real turnoff for an establishment of its size. Clean. Just wholly inappropriate. Had supper here last night (Saturday), a party of 4. We did have a reservation. There was an odor of sewage gas through out the meal. My husband seemed to be plauged with it the most. Three of us smelled it on occasion; he said he smelled it constantly thru out the entire time we were there. Our server was pretty good; but a little rough around the edges. He told us about the specials of the evening; one special, filet with a lobster tail.. 2 of our party wanted that only to be told they were out of lobster! then came back and said one of them could have the lobster. Another special was risotto with scallops; my sister in-law wanted that. Server came back and told her she couldn't have that with scallops, but they could prepare it with shrimp or swordfish; she ordered it with the swordfish. I ordered a Caesar salad with the crab cakes on the side. Drinks, everyone had cocktails except me. I had iced tea (my refill came back as Diet Coke). We had the lobster spring rolls and spicy shrimp for appetizers, they were good. Main course took over an hour to serve...this really was not a deal breaker because we were enjoying ourselves with conversation. When our food arrived, my salad looked and tasted like it was from the previous evening. My crab cakes were blackened on the bottom.. they were still edible; but it was a close call. My husband ordered fries with his steak but received mashed potatoes, we let the server know and he brought a basket of fries out but everyone had just about finished with their meals...we all partook in the fries...they were cooked perfectly and we all enjoyed them. Ordered desert, my husband and I split a raspberry turnover and vanilla ice cream and the other couple ordered cream brûlée. The raspberry turnover was very tasty...but, it was almost impossible to cut the raspberry turnover with our spoon...you litterly could not cut thru the bottom without considerable effort. We were told the cream brûlée was very good. Got the bill and it was $397. Upon closer inspection, we were billed for a swordfish dish and billed for swordfish with risotto... in other words billed twice for my sister in-law's dish. and we were billed $5 for the French fries. We told our server about the overcharge and he did remove the extra charge for the swordfish and the fries since they should have been included in my husbands meal and it really wasn't a problem....we could understand how it occurred. We are not huge complainers and didn't voice our complaints while we were there but, surely they must be aware of the sewage smell..you can't miss it and they had to know the salad really was not up to par, offer specials that were not available and, the food came out very slowly. We were there 2 hours and 45 minutes. Again, we did have a really good time...but, for $422 tab (including the tip) the meal was very disappointing. We will not be back. read more

My husband and I went here for my birthday after it was recommended by a friend. We had the bacon wrapped scallops for an appetizer. Bacon was way overcooked and scallops so small you couldn't even taste them. Entrees weren't much better. Lobster ravioli was just ok, sauce was good but very little lobster. Tuna was cooked but cold and came with a big pile of rice. No bread offered. Also, when I confirmed our reservation there was an option that asked if it was a special occasion. I checked off birthday. When it was not acknowledged I asked the server about it and her answer made no sense. Server was not overly pleasant- she brought our food and that was about it. After some good reviews, my wife and I decided to give Hagan's a try. It was the only place we called without a wait, which should have been a clue. The place was pretty dead...We walked in and stood at the hostess stand for an uncomfortable amount of time while the bartender, who was doing nothing, didn't greet us or get someone to seat us. I guess she decided that holding up the wall with her ass was a better use of her time. A few more of the waitstaff walked by- no greeting, no check to see if we're being helped- until we were finally seated. The menu looked great so I was excited to eat. For apps we ordered the lobster spring rolls and some sort of dumpling. My wife mistakenly overlooked the spiciness of the dumplings so she asked the waitress to cancel the order. The waitress said that she could but it would have to come out of her pocket. In what world is that something to tell your customers? Plus I didn't believe her. After an awkward back and forth we kept the dumplings which were as taste- free as the lobster. For entrees my wife ordered the beet salad and I ordered the "sauteed" shrimp and scallop mediterranean. While we waited for our food we were entertained by one of the cooks who was juggling plating food and eating something with his fingers. I'm guessing that they were down to their last 1/2 a beet in the kitchen (maybe that's what the cook was eating) so they decided to dice it really, really small to make it look like more, otherwise my wife seemed to be fine with it. For my dish they should have replaced the word "sauteed" with "boiled" shrimp and scallops. The dish was comprised of a pool of flavorless liquid (lots of it) with a combo of over- cooked and under-cooked spinach, red pepper slices and olives, topped with shrimp and scallops. None of it looked or tasted like it had been sauteed... or seasoned. In fact it all tasted exactly the same, which was like nothing- no joke. I happened to look over at the bar while getting up. It was empty, except for one person who was sitting down. The high- energy bartender didn't bother to greet her customer or wipe his area, which needed it. Most recent choices were salmon and short rib and both were perfect. Also had a Caesar salad which was good but miss the old beet salad. Up charge for rolls really only negative and not a big deal! Went here last night for the first time, but it definitely will be the first of many! The owner is delightful, the staff is friendly and attentive- and the food was amazing. We decided to split some aps and a salad- and couldn't have been more happy with our selections. Baked brie with a berry chutney, crab and lobster cakes and ahi tuna melted in our mouths!! My boyfriend then added the beat salad, which he loved (I was full). The ambiance is misleading from the street, but once you are in this warm and stylish establishment you don't want to leave! You might even see some people you know, which we did! It was the kind of place that you could have a romantic evening, or night out with the girls. I have been here a few times already and thought I should write a review from my experience. I was here for the 3rd or 4th time yesterday May 26th. I have been greeted by Dora (owner) as I walk in and she tends to always have the "James" table (bar area) set & ready to go for me. I tend to order a Nespresso Martini to start off my evening, and the bartender Jill always makes them to perfection. I like to keep it light and tend to stick with the baby spinach salad and add chicken and for the $15 it will cost you, the delightful mixture of baby spinach, red onions, gorgonzola cheese, shaved almonds & fresh fruit all blended with the raspberry vinaigrette is something that will leave your taste buds wanting more. The bacon wrapped scallops are also a nice way to starting off your dinner course. A nice mixture with the maple mustard glaze with the bacon is a nice combination. Its really hard to write everything into this review, but from the spinach salad to the braised short ribs, to the Honey Apple Stuffed Center Cut Pork Chop, to the Indian Curry Seared Shrimp & Scallops I haven't had one bad meal. My friend(s) have had other dishes that I have sampled and everything has come out to absolute perfection. The duck, chicken saltimbocca, & haddock that I have sampled from friends plates were also wonderful. I decided to try out the Kahlua Chocolate Mousse yesterday evening and surprise surprise it was absolutely phenomenal. If chocolate is not your thing the Key Lime pie is a good choice and the "chocolate" truffles (2 scoops of vanilla ice cream are on the plate also). Something I would like to point out is that it is a small establishment and does tend to be busy during the dinner rush. The wait staff all do an amazing job keeping the patrons fully satisfied so please be patient if it takes a moment for them to get to you. I promise everything will be better than you ever imagined it to be. If you are in the area and are looking for something new to check out, or would just like a low key evening then I highly recommend you go check out Hagan's Grill for yourself. An excellent alternative to the sub-par food that is found around this area for tourists. Hagan's features a pretty wide range of food types; there's your bacon wrapped scallops and Caesar salad part of the menu, curry/coconut ahi ahi part of the menu, and a good mix in if steaks, pastas, and other fish dishes to round it out. Slightly French, slightly Caribbean, and a bit American. There are no corners cut here, everything is made in-house (except maybe salad dressings), and the food really shows it. Delicious flavors and beautiful plates. Now the portions might be a littttlle too big, and the plates are on the large side for presentation, but if that's what I'm nit-picking, I'd say that's a good thing. Two can comfortably eat and drink here for $50, or easily get into the $100+ range with a few choice selections...all worth it. Also, the bartender is excellent and knows how to make a great cocktail. This is the type of place you can also walk on in to the bar, settle in for a few hours, and eat amazing food. Our family found ourselves in Exeter and needed a nice dinner, so we stopped into Hagan's after consulting Yelp. We saw some mixed reviews, but decided to go for it anyway. I have to say, everyone was hugely impressed. The menu was eclectic enough to offer something for everyone, yet everything we tried was executed with the subtlety and nuance of a specialty restaurant. The Indian Curry, Filet Mignon, Ribeye, and Chicken Parmesan were all excellent. The members of our party eagerly shared samples of our entrees around the table and everyone was very pleased. Portions were extremely generous. The beer and wine selection was solid. After dinner we shared the Chocolate Bread Pudding and Chocolate Truffles with Vanilla Ice Cream, which were both to die for. The atmosphere was sophisticated, yet casual and inviting. Our server was very attentive and made suggestions about the menu that were helpful and proved to be extremely accurate. First time here after reading the great reviews; not disappointed. Made reservations for Sat. 7 p.m., table for 5 was ready w/water and waiting. Our server Karen greeted up quickly and told us to take our time, as we explained it was our first time to take in the menu. We took fried calamari to start & I also enjoyed/shared a cup of the seafood bisque--calamari was perfectly cooked w/a spicy remoulade sauce, and the bisque was nice and smooth; done w/a tasty rue. Our entrees arrived quickly after: Moroccan Pan Seared Ahi Tuna--amazing; two 4 oz. filets cooked perfectly & not overdone. Braised Short Ribs--very nice, but smaller portion. Melts in your mouth. Grilled Marinated Chicken Wrap--done w/rosemary but not overly spiced at all; perfect for kids & served with fries. Salmon with a sauce w/goat cheese; again, cooked to perfection. But the best meal of the night was mine, the Saffron Bouillabaisse! You need a good appetite, or share w/the table... you get a lot! Half lobster, Italian Sausage, Shrimp, Scallops, Mussels, Salmon & Garlic Bread; served in a saffron rue that tastes exquisite! The best seafood meal I've ever had. We were too stuffed for dessert, but we will be back again when we visit Hampton Beach. Save yourself from all the touristy deep-fried joints & try a place that isn't as much $$$ as you'd think but has a highly skilled kitchen/chef that makes top-notch dishes. My wife and I wanted to try something new so we booked Hagen's through open table. They had a 7:15 time opened so I booked it, this was at 7am. I received a phone call at 4:30pm that night saying they didn't have a table for us. May I remind you it was Valentine's Day as well. My bad for waiting so long but still. They said we could have two seats at the bar which would be reserved for us. That worked for us. We arrived and there was 6 couple in a unstructured line waiting for someone to acknowledge them. We went to the bar and someone came in off the street and sat down at the bar but good thing we spoke up or we would still be there. We sat down and notice the poor bar person I think her name is JoJo, was doing the entire bar, the lounger tables, and making drinks for all the wait staff as well. Oh, with no bar back or help. We waited 20 minutes for a drink, again, not Johns fault, then three other couples came in after us. They ended up getting their food prior to us even after we ordered. In addition we got our meal served at 9:30. Yes, almost two hours after we got there. In addition, I was served the wrong meal and wasn't about to wait another 30 minutes so I ate it. It was steak and let me tell you, I could have had the same meal at Bonanza at a highway rest stop. We did order the ahi Tuna appetizer which was amazing. I should have ordered three of those instead. My wife ordered seafood with scollops and the scollops had a strong seafood smell which didn't seem right. Anyway, I would opt out of this place Unless your a regular format seems Like they get seats and waited on first. I would opt for the old salt or galley hatch next time for sure. Hagan's Grill was another restaurant seeming to fall short on service while excelling in taste. The entrance to the building led us through the bar into the dining area, where we were met by our server that seated us. It was a dim-lit atmosphere, tables lit by candle light, with a floor layout that separated the bar and the dining areas by a windowed wall. This made the dining area noisy. Immediately I noticed wine lists propped up on each table behind the candles, while the place settings were a basic layout; with a bread and butter plate and rolled up silverware settings placed on each, centered at each seat. There were paintings on the wall that seemed too new-age and modern even for my taste. The painting that loomed over our table read "home grown 10th generation marijuana" with a picture of a man pulling a cannabis leaf. The other paintings surrounding the dining area were indistinguishable colorful abstract shapes and bold faced lines. To say the least, these did nothing to add to the atmosphere nor did they compel me to buy food or beverages. Our server greeted us with food menus and a list of specials that included two cocktails, two starters, three entrees, and three desserts. The server did not offer a beer list, rather offered a few selections that the bar had available on draft. The server saw me fixated on the wine list and the food menu, and even after I had told her that I was looking to pair food with wine, she offered no incite, suggestions, or direction, rather just gave me more time to decide. For my meal, I went with the Pan Seared Atlantic Salmon, complemented with whipped potatoes and asparagus, all topped with a honey ginger butter, that was off of the specials menu. I paired my meal with a Pinot Noir. The food was wonderfully prepared and excellent in taste. Presentation looked fantastic, and enjoyed every bite. A knowledgeable service staff would definitely be an effective strategy to increase sales. A good server can open a guest up to food and wine pairings they may not have considered or would not have chosen prior to a sales pitch or even just a nice conversation from a passionate seller. If the server had stopped to offer her advice or recommendations on a few wine and food pairings when I was deciding on what I would wine and dine on for the night, I may have enjoyed my meal a lot more and gone with a starter and maybe an aperitif, finishing with a dessert complemented by a dessert wine or espresso martini (a cocktail featured on the specials menu but not mentioned at all throughout the course of the meal). Indeed, the service staff was lacking overall, and good wine sales come from a knowledgeable and passionate service staff that is eager to assist the guests and take initiative. A few suggestions: The place setting was far too basic. Bread and butter plates and silverware rolled up in cloth. Place fancy napkin folding, silverware in their appropriate setting, and wine glasses on the table if you want the guest to start thinking about dining with wine earlier on, and make them feel like a valued diner by taking the time on setting up a table that looks like it had been fitted just for them. Higher a sommelier to assist each table, approaching the guests with a presentable wine bottle to the table and carry out appropriate wine service. When our wines came to the table, I didn't know if the wine was from the gutter or from a bottle. It simply arrived out of thin air. Overall, the food made it an enjoyable night out. read more

Met some long time industry friends for dinner last night at Hagan's. All except me had a short commute (2 hours from the White Mountains) but it was worth the 4 hours in the car. Since I was coming the furthest, they let me choose the restaurant and so Hagan's it was, as it is one of my all time favorite places (so wish they were here in the north country). Our server was very attentive but at the same time left us alone so we could catch up with each other. A balancing act that she mastered. The food never disappoints here. We all had steak, cooked to perfection, as were our sides of garlic mashed and asparagus. The wine was a hefty pour and my buddy's martinis were perfect. Creme Brûlée and a chocolate mousse for desert for the table was a perfect ending. Didn't notice the noise level as some reviews mentioned, as we had our own catching up to do. When in Hampton Hagan's is a must. Great food, great service all at a reasonable price. read more

Been living in the area during the summer for the past 12 years and never tried it. Went tonight for first time and would go back. I had the blackened mahi mahi special, my wife had the blacked chicken sandwich. Both meals were excellent. The chicken was a little spicy for my wives taste. My friend and I stopped at Hagans for a glass of wine and dinner. I have to say, it was a terrible experience. I ordered the mixed green salad with Mongolian Beef, which was a skewer of steak tips (supposedly marinated for 3 days) with 2 peppers and one onion piece, over a bed of spinach and mixed greens and lots of red onions, dried cranberries. The salad part was fine; the balsamic dressing really yummy, but the steak was like rubber. I have never had to SAW through steak before, especially after marinating for 3 days. I asked for medium well, and it was rare. I sent it back, and essentially they just threw it on the grill again..I tried it again, and it was seared more on the outside, still very pink and fatty on the inside. So disappointing. My friend ordered a seafood dish that was $26 dollars, and from the first bite was unimpressed. This is a girl from New England who has eaten seafood all of her life, so she knows good seafood. When the bartender, who was very nice and attentive, came to check on us, I had to say something. I told him..I know you brought the food back once, but I'm sorry, it's not good. I've never had to work so hard to cut steak before in my life. He apologized and took it from me. My friend didn't want to complain (who really does?!) about her meal, but it was $26 for this dish, and she was very unhappy with it. She did say something to the bartender finally and he took that and spoke with the cook..which we could see, because it's an open kitchen. Apparently that wasn't a good thing. The owner/manager came out. The woman was very nice, but in a condescending way, tried to tell my friend that they had never had food returned at their establishment, and that the seafood dish couldn't be bad, or she just wasn't familiar with the ingredients. I was stunned. We're not super young, and to almost argue with a patron about what they were expressing to you about the dinner that was very pricey, is obnoxious. I had to bite my tongue. At one point, I could take the condescension no more, and said that we were old enough to know bad steak and seafood. The woman talked and talked and talked. Honestly, in my opinion, she should have gone with the "customer is always right" approach. We had both eaten there before and had good luck, but I'm not going to sit back and have food that is not good and not say something. They took the entrees off of our bill, and we tipped the bartender very well-wasn't his issue. He was very nice to us the entire time. When we walked out, someone shouted something to us..I'm guessing it wasn't very nice. Sound juvenile? Exactly. I'll never go back there. I'll tell everyone I know not to bother with that place. Hagan's is the total experience: well-cooked food, splendid friendly-not-hokey service, and the pleasure of being in a place where people know and like each other--both staff and patrons. Foods we tried and liked: bacon-wrapped scallop appetizer (with maple syrup), Kobe beef burger with extraordinary sweet potato fries (best I've ever had), the short rib entree and the house-made key lime pie. Wine list, beers, cocktails all highly credible. The main greeter, bartender and server, perhaps named Jill, kept me completely mesmerized by her constant motion, making cocktails, talking with regulars, clearing, serving, hosting. We wanted to eat decent food and watch the Red Sox play the Yankees. All this worked perfectly. We are visitors to Salisbury Beach nearby each summer. Boyfriend and I were looking for a nice place for dinner to get seafood and stumbled upon this. More than pleasantly surprised. Our waitress was so great, friendly and knowledgeable and the service was just quick enough to enjoy ourselves. Food was so delicious and fresh! Definitely worth the price and drive away from the beach. read more
