Went back in to touch up and lighten my balayage and a treatment about a month ago. My hair is wavy/ curly and rather fine, making it a little difficult to work with. The result of touch up came out very beautiful! I did do the 3 to 4 step Milbon treatment as the first time I came here and my hair was soft for weeks. I honestly think that Joe does a wonderful job deciding and helping clients with the choice of color and he is honest in how much lighter a person's color can get. My hair was lightened to a level that I wanted, and Joe gave me advice on how to maintain the salon's treatment before the next treatment. The salon's environment was very very busy when I came in, and I was happy to see all the customers that the salon could handle efficiently all at the same time. The hair stylists and colorist keep an eye out to prevent the bleach from over processing and I didn't feel like I was left stranded for a long time by the staff while my color was processing. I originally came here because they seemed to have good reviews for balayage, but if you're only looking for a haircut, I would not recommend this place. I requested Joe and asked for a simple trim. The entire haircut was extremely rushed. He only used thinning shears on the back of my hair, didn't properly section or measure anything, and didn't even touch my bangs even though they were clearly too long. My husband stepped outside for a cigarette right when the haircut started, and I was basically done before he even finished smoking. Even my husband said it was insane how fast and careless the haircut was and told me I should go back inside to complain. I didn't because it was only $20, but I definitely will not return and would not recommend going to Joe for just a haircut. I've really missed coloring my hair since I've been growing it out for about three years, so I decided to try balayage again with Joe. I didn't have a clear idea of what I wanted until the last moment while I was waiting for my turn, and I started browsing for inspiration photos. As always, Joe did his consultation by asking me about my color preferences. I showed him a picture of one of his recent work, and he absolutely delivered. During the consultation, he did mention that the outcome might not be an exact match since everyone's hair is unique, but I have to say it turned out quite similar to what I envisioned. Came here for a wash and cut and was pleased with the service and overall experience. I called to make an appointment but they said if you're coming for a cut you can just walk in. I would highly recommend coming in around the time the salon opens if you're going on the weekend because it got crowded rather quickly. Please save your money and time, go elsewhere. And please don't be deceived with reviews and their Before and after photos. The after photos are done under bright ring lights. After very careful consideration I will not recommend this place or come back ever again. There are a few things that arise through and post my visit that are red flags. 1. It was not the vibe, if you looking to relax. My appointment was at 10am- the place was packed and sounded like a flea market. 2. They gave me a dry cut before balayage. I requested 4 inches total. I was completely unaware that they will cut it again after balayage, no one mentioned it and I was left with a shorter length than expected. 3. They try to upsell me a treatment off the batch. They said that after balayage I'll need it for healthier hair. 4. Joe did the consultation and then left two individuals bleaching my hair. They were talking extremely loud, I felt that they were not paying attention to my hair. 5. I was left unattended BLEACHING for over 2hrs. Joe then came and gave the go for hair wash time. 6. The guy that washed my hair was wearing latex gloves and was pulling my hair. It was extremely uncomfortable and painful. I decided to not say anything, considering maybe he is protecting his hands. 7.Same guy brushed my hair! And I saw my hair breaking apart. Residuals of hairs in the comb as I watch him. Then I comb my hair through with my fingers and MORE hair just falls. At this moment, I panicked and was looking for the lady that also bleached my hair. NO ONE was paying attention to me. 8. I finally grasp her and asked why is my hair is falling and I needed to speak to Joe. Then she GASLIGHTS me and says that this is "NORMAL" with balayage. This just hit me in the spot because I've done tons of balayage and this is not normal! 9. I finally spoke to Joe and he claims it was the hair from the dry cut. And not to worry because I have healthy hair. 10. Not gonna lie, I was being very verbal that I think the two ladies next to me ALSO doing their balayage stared at me either thinking I was crazy or being scared. 10. My reaction was very normal after seeing hair falling out, and if you fucked up you say you'll fix it, not that is normal. I decided to calm down and give Joe a chance to "fix it". He then comb my hair, cut again and finished prettying me up. 11. I then felt bad because it wasn't that bad and he took a nice After photo. And gave me free shampoo:conditioner to try. I felt so bad that I also tipped 35% HOWEVER, I'm so disappointed and dissatisfied. The following days, my scalp was itchy and had dandruff. My hair is just shorter than I wanted and I have lots of split ends. My hair looks and feels like straw. They just damaged and over bleached and made me feel bad that I had a natural reaction. I did my hair on Sept 30, is now beginning of November and I can see the color has faded and I see my white hairs. I don't feel comfortable even giving them a second chance. There's a reason why this place is highly recommended for Asian balayage and always packed. For $230 (before tip), this is the best bang for your buck in NYC for a balayage and haircut. The location is a bit of a trek (first time this far down in Brooklyn) but I think it's well worth it compared to other places in the city. Appointments are easy to make via text. I'm surprised they had appointments available a week out - I'm used to having to book months in advance for a popular place, but they were able to fit me in quickly before the holidays. Service is based on efficiency - there were people constantly coming in and out while I was getting my hair done. First, Joe will consult you on what you want. It's helpful to have some pictures from his IG page on what color you are looking for so he can formulate something based on your current hair color. I actually wanted to go more ashy grey, but since I previously dyed my hair back to black earlier this year, he said it wouldn't be realistic in one season (which I expected) and said we'll gradually work our way up. After the consultation, a staff member cut my hair. Afterwards, two other staff members foiled my hair. The foils were HEAVY but there's this hanging contraception from the ceiling that they clip the foils on to lighten the load on your head. Afterwards, another staff member washed and conditioned my hair before the first staff member finished styling my hair. I have to admit I wasn't expecting so many different people working on my hair at once, but the process worked like a well-oiled machine and I was out of the salon within 3 hours. Bring a book or a portable charger for your phone bc there's nothing really else to do while you are waiting for your hair to process. I haven't bleached my hair in over 2 years and decided to go for a more natural looking balayage. The entire process took around 3.5 hours which is amazing. DO NOT RECOMMEND! Their reviews and pictures are deceiving. I had a picture of exactly what I wanted, which seems quite common as it is balayage in different tones of brown. After a consultation with Joe, he said this is all filter and lighting, and it will not come out like this as everyone's natural hair color and bleach is different. I said I totally understand as long as you can do something similar. I specify that I do not want blonde, gold, orange or yellow. I decided to proceed with the dye, which was a huge mistake. First, it was not balayage because they bleach to my root so it looks like highlights. Then the color was totally off where it looks like they just bleached my hair and did not apply toner/color. The picture that they took under lighting looks nothing like that in person. It was terrible, so I ended up going to a different Nonstop Style in Manhattan to get it corrected. Picture 1 is what I asked for. Picture 2 was a selfie taken at the salon with natural light. Picture 3 was taken at the salon under professional light. Picture 4 was taken the next day after one wash. If color can wash off in one wash, it is bad quality. But, that is really the color I walked out with. Picture 5 was my hair done at Nonstop Salon. When I walked into the salon, the stylist said it is not balayage and it looks like he only bleached and did not apply toner. Their prices are great, but you get what you paid for. This is quantity over quality. They charged $250 for balayage and cut for my waist length hair. If you wish to do the hair treatment, it is an additional $75, which is $25 cheaper than most salons in the city. In the end, I ended up paying what a high end salon would charge me because I had to get it corrected. Joe is the stylish who does the consultant but he is not hands on with the dye. He has a bunch of staff that does the physical work like mixing the color and applying. read more
