I found this salon after searching for the best place for blonde colorists in DC. Unfortunately I cannot review the quality of services because I was literally screamed at and chased down the stairs by the owner in a fit of rage. I was told I could come before salon opening if I wanted to settle in before meetings, but bc of work I got there at my exact appointment time (10 am on the dot) which was a HUGE problem for him. He said "Apparently you're not accepting calls" and made a big show of pulling out a phone and calling a number that was out of service. I quietly said that they must have the wrong number and he said that was my fault. I just stood there in shock bc I'd called to make the appointment and provided my number over the phone- so if you have the wrong number, which is more likely- that I forgot my number when providing it, or that the person on the phone wrote it down incorrectly?! But even though I was treated terribly during check-in, I tried to suck it up and make peace with the man. However, he just limply held my hair and stared at me aggressively when I told him about what I wanted. I started to cry bc I was so shocked by all of this behavior and I said I should probably just leave- this threw him in a spiral apparently, and he chased me out. When I tried to tell the man at the front desk I was upset he screamed down the stairs that I was a crazy person?! I hurried out on the street crying. Why do stylists who don't like curly hair insist on blowing it straight? Why can't they just cut it well so it looks good without a blow out? I came here and was treated extremely well by all the staff. The cut was just ok - no better than the cut I got at Aveda... but I learned that both the stylist here and the one at Aveda had been trained at the same school in Turkey. What are the chances? Neither of them could give me a reasonably updated cut, and both insisted on blowing it out. I hate my hair blown out, but I let them do it with hopes that they'll see what I see when they're done. Response to Serken per my 8/1/12 review. As I mentioned, I already came back to you guys for a second appointment in hopes of fixing what happened. I figured that it was an honest mistake, but I was less than thrilled after I told my stylist about the damage and subsequently received no actual apologies or discounts on all of the treatments that were provided. I appreciate your offer to "take care of the problem," but I have since been advised that, given the extent of the damage, the only real solution is to let the hair grow out. I'm certainly annoyed at what happened and will be taking my business elsewhere, but I'm not trying to launch a vendetta against your salon. I just don't want other women to have to go through what I am dealing with. I'm entitled to express my opinion, and if your salon is as good as you say it is, then one bad review shouldn't be an issue. Also, just FYI, the Kerastase you use and sell in your salon is a L'Oreal-brand product. And I never "talked to L'Oreal" about this -- my L'Oreal contact is just a friend whose experience in the hair care product distribution business has familiarized her with the reputations of nearly every salon in the DC area. read more

I've been going to see Mistik for years, and was thrilled when he came to Hair Lounge, which is in my neighborhood. He has a painstaking approach to color, cut, and style, and I always leave feeling fantastic. The space itself is very nice; everyone has been friendly and accommodating. Even the shampoo is something to look forward to. And it /isn't/ cheap, but the results are absolutely worth the price. I wouldn't go anywhere else. I don't drive to my appointments very often, but I will echo the complaint that it's hard to park at the off-street garage in the building. If you leave a little extra time and don't mind walking a bit you can find parking in the neighborhoods to the west or at some of the other lots just a little further up the avenue (there's one behind Glover Park Hardware, as well.) read more

I ended up at The Hair Lounge on a fluke, I desperately needed highlights and was tired of the "cheap" looking head of hair I had gotten from Bang Salon. Admittedly I am a highlight addict, I used to highlight every 6 weeks like clock work when I lived in Michigan (of course in Michigan the prices weren't through the roof). I saw Murat for color and cut for almost 3 years - I was never completely pleased with the service but couldn't figure out what the problem was - finally after having a bad dye job to brown hair and highlights to "fix" it could I see how wiry my formerly soft hair had become. All the money I threw away for "color" was really "BLEACH" and my hair was yellow. It took $400 and the ted gibson salon to fix it (miraculously my hair appointments have dwindled to 4 times a year and have actually ended up saving me money and my hair looks amazing!). Murat is great for a blow-out (he does flawless pin straight hair to anyone), and his up-do's are well worth the $100. But as for color and cut go elsewhere, the cuts were always uneven, when I had my hair fixed the length was an inch different from one side to the other. I'm not at all cheap when it comes to my hair, but this place is NOT worth the money. read more

I had my first haircut in four months today and it felt SO good! During COVID days it's hard to know where to go - who's actually following strict protocols and who's just saying they are. Since I have been loyal to Mistik (the MOST wonderful stylist and human alive) for over 20 years I had a sense of trust already. But it was the actions that I saw at the salon that put me at complete ease! I watched chairs being cleaned, the sterilizing machine where the scissors are held, my temperature was taken, masks for all, etc... I love this salon!! I rarely/never take the time to write reviews but this salon is fantastic. Mistik is amazing with color and style. A professional personal stylist recommended him as my blonde was "all wrong" for my coloring. He is kind yet straight forward and decisive. I now get so many compliments on my hair and as a 50+ year old woman that is pretty incredible. My last visit there was after the covid shut down and as a healthcare provider was absolutely amazed at their appropriate and considerate modifications. I felt very comfortable. I've been a Susie fan for a long time. I'm so glad she's gone back to her roots (pun slightly intended). She is a wonderful hairstylist and a pleasure to spend time with. I don't know much about color and styles, but I tell her what I like and she always makes me look better than what I had envisioned. So today she did my roots (no more grey) and did a "reverse balyage" (low lights) plus deep conditioning, and cut and style. I couldn't be more happy. DO NOT go to this salon to get your hair done! I decided to go here because I did a search for "master colorist DC" and this salon popped up, also, due to all the positive press articles. I should have been wary when I got an appointment with one of the owners, Daniel Levy, in just two days. I came in with a years and a half's worth of virgin hair and I told him I wanted blond. I had a photo of me with the blond shade that I liked, and a photo with me as a kid when my hair was a light golden blonde naturally. He was very gruff and rude and hardly looked at the photos at all. But I gave him creative license and ignored it. I told him that I absolutely did not want any gold or red, I liked ash tones. What I got were streaks (he didn't bother to weave the comb in and out through the parts to be highlighted) of dark golden blonde mixed in with a lot of my natural brown. In the back, at the nape, were the product was left on longer was the color I wanted. The next day I drove all the way up to a top salon in NY to try to have it fixed. Because it was already processed the best they could get it to was a dark bronze (read reddish) blonde. They said that Daniel had left way too much brown in the front, and since my hair was virgin I should have been able to get the exact color I wanted. So after growing my hair out for a year and a half because I had had to cut it off due to damage, it's fried again thanks to Daniel at the Hair Lounge. This is exactly why salons get successfully sued. I wasn't the only one who got ripped off here, while at the salon I watched as other women got their hair single-processed bleached to disastrous results. The resulting color was garishly yellow and the hair wiry. It looked as if it had been done at home. When I asked for a refund and told him (on the phone after calling back after a week of waiting for him to return my call) what they had said in NY, he said "Wow" and hung up on me. If this is the way he runs his business, I would be surprised if it is not defunct shortly. Be skeptical of the authenticity of any positive review of this salon. BTW the review placed by "Kristin" was posted only a few hours after I sent a copy of my review to the salon. And I'd be willing to bet the other review placed the same day and the review placed on 7-19 are fakes as well. In fact, most of the 5 star reviewers for this place don't have any other reviews. read more

I need to be checked into a mental facility after going to Hair Lounge. I booked an appointment with Manu (who is apparently an independent contractor, not a full stylist at the salon?) after seeing a woman who had gorgeous hair who then recommended me to him.. I wanted to transition from a harsh ombre to a softer more natural ombre. i wanted light brown on the top that would fade into a soft caramel + beachy blonde at the bottom. I brought in a picture, I could not have been more clear about what i wanted. I did not want a hair cut which is why i did not book an appointment for one. When I arrived to the salon, Manu told me that I would need to trim "maybe 2 inches at most" from my ends so that he would be able to effectively dye my hair. My hair takes years to grow and considering I had bleached it within an inch of its life for many years, it took me quite sometime (almost 4 years) to grow it long and healthy BELOW MY CHEST. I trusted him that it would only be two inches and that it would be good for the integrity of my hair. As he is cutting my hair, SITTING DOWN because he has a 'bad back', i notice that my hair length is now right above my shoulders. I say to him, "excuse me this looks extremely short" at this point, Manu LIES to me and says "no this is just the front layers, your back layers are still the same exact length as before" - No. Manu had chopped off SIX INCHES from my hair and was choosing to LIE about it. After I saw my hair lying on the ground, I was quickly escorted to the hair coloring station. He proceeds to dye my hair with permanent dye, a DARK brown. Not only was this NOT what I had asked for, because he did not take the time to examine my hair, my roots came out ORANGE, my middle came out dark brown, and my ENDS came out with a green tinge. As I was waiting for my toner, he then pulls up on his phone, different Loreal BOX colors I can get from CVS in order to keep myself fresh in between colorings. Excuse me, I paid over $200 and you're telling me to go to CVS to maintain my 'beautiful' look?????? After running out to my car, legitimately screaming as I passed by innocent citizens eating brunch, I cry for the next two weeks straight. It took me quite a hassle to get my money back from the owner, Daniel, who told me that he was trying to accommodate me, but that I was making it extremely difficult on him. THEY HAVE RUINED MY HAIR. They have chopped off SIX inches, and DYED it a DARK brown, and I am the one who is making things difficult. Additionally, he tried to tell me that I wouldn't be able to get my money back as Manu is an independent contractor and has nothing to do with the salon. Fortunately, I have a father in tax and employment law, and I knew this was not true. I have since found a fantastic stylist to fix it, but unfortunately, the color will not be the same for AT LEAST another 4 color jobs, and my length will probably not return for another 4 years. read more

The staff at this salon are friendly, including the shampoo girls. Upon walking in you are greeted by the receptionist who hands you a robe and then directs you towards the shampoo area. You are politely greeted by a shampoo girl for a relaxing wash and head massage. Thereafter, you will be walked over to your stylists chair to begin your service. All the stylists are amazing and welcoming. Daniel, the owner, does a great job with all services, especially color. Contrary to all the comments seen on here, he is great!!! I went to get my hair cut at Hair Lounge, because I was looking for a change. I had only been to one salon since moving to the DC area and I figured I should try another. I was very pleased with my haircut from Heather. I really wanted a cleaner shape and more edgy look. She totally understood what I was looking for and very quickly gave me what I was looking for, while also advising me on what direction I should take my hair. I was really in need of a hair consult and that is what she gave me. It was the fastest hair cut I've ever had, but her precise cuts were all in the right place and really made the difference between an almost-there hair style and the "it" factor I was looking for. My only complaint is that the price is pretty high at $80. But, I do like that all of their stylists are the same price. Oh, and parking kind of sucks. There's only one pay-to-park garage beneath the salon and it closes at 7pm, so make sure to get out on time! I think the cost to park was $8.00 read more

Daniel Levy is rude and insulting. When I asked for him to only cut a few inches off of my hair, he ended up cutting off a substantially larger portion than I had asked for. When I explained my worries, he patronizingly told me "do not go home and cry about it." His remarks were not only inappropriate but incorrect. I have the right to cry after putting up with his poor character, over priced salon, and disparaging remarks. If I am paying $100 for to a simple hair cut, it should at the very least be to the customer's satisfaction. To Hair Salon Customers: This is the most overrated hair salon in Washington, DC and I should know. I have been living in this town for over four decades. Only go here if you want to add more stress to your life and wish to flush money down the toilet. Great salon in Georgetown. It's pricey, but well worth it! I drive from PA to see Aicha who is extremely talented with color and cutting-- she can do funky/fresh or keep it traditional, and her cuts grow out very well. I hadn't had my hair cut in 4 months, and people were stopping me on the street wanting to know where I got my hair done! Also my blonde highlights look very natural-- she takes such care it's almost like she cuts and colors each hair individually. Very customer service oriented-- they always have beverages and bagels on hand to offer, and will do whatever necessary to fit you into the schedule, even if last minute. Highly suggest checking it out, and def rec Aicha (pronounced like "Asia") as a stylist. read more

Hair Lounge is a good, basic hair salon. Ask for Serkan, if you get your hair colored, as he did a nice job on mine and won't try to do more than is asked, or more than you think is necessary. I don't need a lot of fuss in a salon, so this works for me. Serkan is nice, but he also does not attempt to make inane chit-chat while you get your hair done, which is a plus. It isn't cheap, but for the work I had done, it was about within range. read more

I went to Hair Lounge 2 years ago and asked them to fix my hair. It was over processed and extremely damaged. Just 2 years later my hair is healthy and a beautiful color - I couldn't be happier. The staff worked with me and never recommended anything that I wasn't totally thrilled with. I have my hair colored there, cut, styled and straightened. The salon is spotless and everyone is very friendly. I have lived in DC for 5 years (moved here from NY and SFO) and have looked high and low for the right colorist and hair stylist - I couldn't be happier with the Hair Lounge and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a salon - I totally trust them with my hair color, cut and style!! This place is great. I color my hair, so I know that highlights can be a disaster if not done well. It's very hard to find a place that does blond well (esp. if you're a brunette) and does highlights well. I'm sure the women out there know what I mean. Serkan does an amazing job with my highlights and he gives a great cut. He listens to what you want so you feel comfortable that you won't walk out with something horrible. Everyone is very nice, the women who wash your hair give a great head massage and they also offer you drinks. What more could you want? They also have a tv that seems to be set on some fashion channel. It's fun to watch the runway shows while you're getting your hair done. For me, that's a great perk! In a town where you could pay a fortune for an average cut and color, this place is a gem. read more
