As a customer for over 3 years I have often requested a specific hair style. Most times it is ignored by Noe and she moves ahead with a smile then does what she wants. Last week I was waiting a brief 5-8 minutes so looked at some pictures in a hair style book nearby- you know that book. When Noe arrived I showed her my idea for a haircut, she asked if i wanted to make it spiky in the middle and said yes but want the top/back of my hair longer. She nodded then immediately grabbed her shears- at first I was shocked at how much she was taking off then thought this is kinda right I guess. I saw the final result from the front and thought ok. It was not until the next day that i looked in the mirror and I was mortified at what I was looking at. Noe had literally shaved as close as possible to the top of my head - completely ignored my really important request to keep that one section longer. I can't tell what she was thinking but as a client for 3 years you'd think she'd get accustomed to what will or won't look good on a client. Not only that but I had asked specifically for her to leave the top long. Needless to say I will never have Noe touch my hair, I will go find someone who actually will listen specially to what I want and then use the expertise to make me look the best possible. My birthday is next week and now I can't go out in public because how embarrassing it is to be seen. I even wear a hat in front of my husband- so yes it's that bad. How could she NOT respect me or realize what she was doing would make me look ridiculous. Oh and back to that book, my hair on top looks similar but OMG not the back or sides which were trimmed down to the very shortest possible length you could do. Noe cuts all my family's hair. The best part AI think is that she can handle cutting my 2 year old son's hair. He hates getting a haircut so much he needs to sit in my lap so I can wrap my arms and legs around him to hold him still while my wife holds his head straight so that Noe can cut his hair. Had a body perm on very damaged hair and not totally surprised, it didn't hold for the most part. Went back in to see what could be done and Reiko took her time to assess and talked me out of another perm (which she would have done) because she felt it wouldn't help the situation and could cause more damage. Instead, she gave me two services which were far more than I expected. I have been going to Hairstyles by Noe for quite a few months for cuts and I think they are the best salon in south Maui. I went to get my hair straight. The first time the daughter "practiced" on my hair. They burned it so bad... they tried helping me with conditioning but it was so bad that nothing worked. They gave me my money back but I had to wear a hat for a couple of months. Noe Did a good job on my friends hair so I gave her another chance but I asked her to do it professionally. It turns out that not just she burned my hair again she gave me the worst haircut a girl can have and now right before my vacations I will have to ware a hat for the next month's. I tried to be cool but I don't think they know what they are doing... I used to straight my hair myself for years and never burned it. So be careful if you want to get your hair done here . I must preface by saying I'm a very "easy hair" kind of girl. I don't put tons of product in my hair and spend hours styling it to a tee. I do however get regular haircuts and make sure it always looks clean, groomed and presentable. For the rate that my hair grows, this place fits my budget. All of the staff is very friendly. Reiko and Noe (the owner actually) are the senior stylists but I've seen the other girls work and its just as great. The staff remembers your name and they always greet you with a warm smile. Reiko listens to you before she even touches your head and she seems to have a sixth sense with me, maybe its because I've been going to her for awhile now but still...for me this place is home for my hair. read more

I go in almost every 2 weeks (usually I call ahead of time, but Ive done walk ins on multiple occasions) for a hair cut & always get greeted with a warm welcoming. 2 reasons why I love HBN. 1) the stylists (especially Noe) have knowledge about Military Regulation hair styles. From my understanding, a lot of Reservists/Guardsmen come to this salon because of this knowledge. 2) Friendly, genuine, true customer service. :( Left feeling very frustrated. My haircut is fine, as there is nothing visually wrong with my hair. Biggest problem was my stylist wouldn't listen. Wouldn't do more than glance at the picture I brought in. I have pretty long hair now, all the same length. I wanted layers, LOTS of them. I asked three different times for more drastic, visible layers, bangs, ect. She would just grab the same chunk of hair and snip at it a little more. So disappointing! This place is horrible. Got the worst haircut of my life last week. It will take weeks to grow out so I can have a "professional" stylist fix it. I had looked at the reviews and decided to give them a try~ my first clues should have been $18 for a haircut....oh, well. I'd give them a chance. I wear my hair short and it's very fine and thin. Not only was the cut horrendous but she shaved over my ears... WTH???? I'm not a man. I'm a woman who was very specific as to how I wanted my hair cut. And it was all cut straight across... No texturing of any kind. When I got home my bangs were about 1" shorter on one side and the hair by my ears was no where near the same length. I really feel that I need to, so that other people won't have their hair completely destroyed, as mine was. last February, I went to see noe, as a new resident of Maui. I am a platinum blonde and have been for 10 years. my hair has always been relatively healthy and in good shape, in spite of the chemicals that I use on my hair. I went in for a touch up to my roots and noe, overlapped the bleach and a week later, the entire top layer broke off. it's been nearly a year and my poor broken hair is about 2 inches long. my hair has to be soaked in oils and then pasted down with wax every day. and it looks terrible. I've since moved back to the mainland and back with my regular hairdresser. he said that I really owe it to other people to write this review. anyway, my hair is ruined and it will be at least 6 months until it looks a little more normal. it really sucks to have your hair ruined by an incompetent hairdresser. read more

My hair cut came out amazing! I brought in a picture of a hairstyle I wanted, and they worked with it to get the hairstyle I wanted. I'm reading these other reviews that brought in their pictures... maybe the hairstyle is not good for the hair you have? A good hairstylist will make adjustments to try for the hairstyle you want, but if there's no way the hairstyle will work for you hair, then don't blame the hairstylist just because she couldn't make your curly frizzed up hair look like beyonce's! Not a fan...when you walk into the salon employees are too busy playing with their smart phones to bother helping you. When I was finally acknowledged, and had a "consultation" the stylist didn't even refer to the picture I brought and she shaved the back of my neck without asking! 18 seems like a deal for a haircut, but after wash and dry it magically becomes 40 bucks...and I've had better haircuts from the beauty school for 12. i went to HBN today and wanted to do an ombre,i showed the hairstylist a picture of the ombre style and color i wanted, but before giving her the go i asked her if the color will match me specially with my skin tone and im tan. she said yes it will. so i said ok lets do that color then, but when it was done, i didn't like the outcome of my hair. the gradient of my hair doesn't even look good and my hair look like half blonde and half black roots.. wouldn't recommend people going there. they are friendly and welcoming but their work is shitty read more

I asked for a color, highlight and cut, which I got all 3 done but did not expect to pay 195.00 for that, she explained to me that an extra 40 dollars was added because she did the whole head.... duh!! really? of course a person expects to get there whole head done, not just a partial.... she should not have hidden fees, I left there very upset, because I felt like she is misleading on the prices.
