Spicy garlic chicken with fried veggie rice
    Mary T.

Last month, I stayed in Oakville for a couple of nights. I learned that I didn't need to go into the office on Wednesday, so I remained in my cozy hotel room and worked remotely. I needed to grab lunch. I decided to use the credit that I had on DoorDash and get my food delivered. I found Hakka Rise. Perfect! I didn't realize that this eatery was in Burlington until after I had ordered. It offered free delivery. I decided to get two entrees. I'd have each one for lunch on Wednesday and Thursday. I got the following combos: - Spicy garlic chicken with fried veggie rice and a Diet Coke - Shrimp with lobster sauce with fried veggie rice, and hot and sour soup Each combo came with a veggie spring roll. I had ordered well ahead of when I wanted to have lunch. I got my food on time. The delivery person left my food at the door and knocked on the door before leaving. Ordering delivery feels so fancy to me because I tend to fetch it. The veggie spring rolls were yummy. They were crunchy and had decent filling. I had the spicy garlic chicken first. It was okay. The chicken was good. It had breading that I could do without. I'm used to a savoury sauce. This one was more on the sweeter side of the scale. It was odd to me. It wasn't garlicky enough for my liking. The hot and sour soup was excellent. There were good chunks of tofu and mushrooms. The spice level was perfect. I'd get it again. The following day, I had the shrimp in lobster sauce. It's a different style than my favourite version of it from New China in Rochester, MN. However, it was yummy and a lot better than the spicy garlic chicken. It was more savoury and soy-based. It worked surprisingly well with the generous number of shrimp. I'd definitely order this dish again. Both meals came with veggie fried rice. I loved it. It made the spicy garlic chicken bearable to eat. It worked nicely with all that lobster sauce and shrimp. The Diet Coke came in handy to enjoy during my stay. You can't go wrong with a canned drink. This eatery also has momos. I didn't order any, but I hope to next time. This restaurant was a great find. I look forward to ordering more items when I'm either back in Oakville or a tourist in Burlington. (426)

Ordered takeout. Entrees were very good with large quantities. We are not from the area but definitely made a good decision.

Fine Dining... casually!…read more When a restaurant delivers the best meals, with top shelf service in an intimate setting, you call that Michelin Star or at least recommended. When you do it effortlessly, you call that Buvette, a new standard in Casual Fine Dining. I had the most wonderful evening at Buvette in Burlington. Yes ... Burlington. Far away but worth the drive. Step in and friendly salutations are offered, along with overheard lively conversations of happy patrons that have been looking forward to a night out. It's been a long few years, and Buvette has spent their time setting up and after only opening 8 months ago, they are shaking up the dining scene. The home reimagined and constructed into Buvette is gorgeous. The passthrough fireplace, with Buvette proudly emblazoned on it, plays the center piece. The sunken sunroom dining area, the intimate bar, stairs to the second floor dining area all pass by warmth of the fire. And of course, opposite to the fireplace is the glass encased small collection of fine wines. Though Buvette is a Winebar, let's not forget their handcrafted cocktails. The owner was cheeky and named them after businesses around the historic Village Square of Downtown Burlington. From carpaccio to cauliflower bites, burrata to pastas, steaks to lobster, the names may be standard, but the food here is elevated to a whole new level. My fav? Obvisouly The Buvette Signature Share Platter! A mouthwatering board featuring steak, lobster, shrimps, lamb, and all the fixings. Whether you are here for vibes and drinks, spend some quality time with family, or a special someone, you really came to the right place. My night was amazing, however, take a gander at the menu before heading out. The place is casual but don't forget, it is Fine Dining. Bring your card made of metal... or someone you know that is!!! Downtown Burlington continues to impress me as a place for upscale living, and I think Buvette has given me another reason to perhaps make a move? Hmmm... CHEERS!!!

They even asked the sous chef to make sure the presentation was excellent; he didn't disappoint. Their menu changes seasonally. I ordered the following: 1. Coke ($). 2. Tempura Shrimp ($27). 3. Crispy Duck Leg Confit & Breast ($46). 4. Saskatoon Berry Cheesecake ($14). The Tempura Shrimp were tiger shrimp and were so plump, each about 1 inch diameter at the widest end! They were de-shelled and tempura battered. There were orange slices (orange), avocado slices (green), and chili slices (red), making the dish colourful. The Crispy Duck came with a leg and sliced breast portions. Accompanying them were tamarillo, sunchoke puree, bordelaise, dried kale chips, berry gastrique, and chopped candied pecans. All the ingredients worked well together, with mixtures of savoury and sweet tastes. The Cheesecake was amazing. The cheesecake itself was an upside-down half sphere. It was soft; I prefer that over the typical firm cake. There were miniature dried berries on top, along with a ruby chocolate sauce, and a sliced of dried red beet. Surrounding it was a soft marshmallow meringue which was lightly torched. The colour theme was red and white with a touch of dark blue. Daimon, the sous chef, plated everything expertly for me. There is plenty of indoor seating, of which one side has a view of the lake. There is lively music playing in the background. There is free WiFi. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible. There are separate male/female washrooms. There is free street parking on weekends on a street running north of the restaurant. There is also a paid parking lot next to the restaurant. Returned to Spencer's at the Waterfront for brunch and was not disappointed…read more I enjoy visiting Spencer's on special occasions. At the recommendation of the service staff, I ordered the Crab Cake Egg Benedict (lemon aïoli, boston lettuce, chive hollandaise), served for weekend brunch only. Similar to my previous meals here, the food had subtle layers of flavour that came together nicely with every bite. I tend to gravitate to food that I can't get at other restaurants. The server informed us that the meal was not served on brioche like the other Egg Benedict's, but I was still full with the side salad (yeh, no arugula). My husband ordered the side fries so his belly was full. There were two crab cakes with eggs, and plenty of crab inside. I was glad that I didn't taste fillers. Service was good and we sat at a table with a waterfront view. The Sloane tea and beverages were a pricey and small for what they were, hence one of the reasons I don't come here as frequently. Overall, I enjoy the food here.

Came here to celebrate Mother's Day…read more This smart dressy dress code restaurant was very cozy and intimate. It was a wonderful atmosphere with soft instrumental music and the ability to hear the conversation of people at your table. To start, there was toasted bread with feta cheese and dill pickles. The starter salad was a huge supper entree size plate. The choice wax garden or Cesar. You could get the French Onion soup instead. Had the main Filet Peppercorn sauce. Asked for medium rare and it was amazing but it had a little much gravy for my liking. The baked potato side was a nice side (not too big) which came with butter and sour cream versus having french fries. Veggies were a few string beans, a slice of a big carrot and a piece of red sweet pepper. The plating of such fine expensive entrees was not very sophisticated. Thought it would be plated much nicer than it did. The server was very friendly and helpful. Chefs were accommodating to special requests and the food was excellent. A nice, special occasions/ celebration restaurant. It is better than a chain restaurant.
