One of my absolute favorites in Irvine. Simply a great place to grab crispy katsu meals, tasty udon, & delicious tempura! Favorites are Hire-Katsu (Pork Tenderloin) or Hako (Pork Loin), and as well as the Nabeyaki Udon. Most of the katsu meals come with a creamy savory dipping sauce, japanese slaw(cabbage salad), and rice. Since this place gets pretty busy often, we usually opt for the takeout option as everything comes beautifully boxed which is great for date nights, and even for leftovers, a quick air fry makes it even tastier. Admittedly even after coming back from Japan, I came here multiple times in the same week, & it's always a grand ole time. While there is a lot of parking, there's also a lot of stores in this plaza, so it can be a bit difficult sometimes. There generally is a waitlist, so definitely would recommend takeout versus eating inside! read more

So I've been told that this place is legit from two different sources so you know this was a sign for me to end the year with Hako. My party came in on a Monday evening and it was already pretty packed. It was around a 50 minute wait for me, so I decided to walk around and see the other stores in the plaza, which made waiting convenient. Then I got notified that my table was ready. I came in so starved I felt like a child that could be sponsored by someone from a first world country. In this case, Hako is that someone from the first world country, and instead of paying 5 cents a day to support me, they provided me with the Chicken Katsu plate for one night. Now, I don't know how many days I would have needed to save up to get an equivalent of the Chicken Katsu plate, but I'd say having that dish was the more ideal option of the two. The presentation was great. See attached photo for more. The crunch of the katsu was heavenly, dwarfing all other dishes in the tray. I mean, it was absolutely the highlight of the meal since it came with rice, shredded cabbage(?), and soup. Portions were absolutely generous. Hako is always super crowded, especially since we came on a Friday evening at around 6p. Yeah.. It was packed, with people already waiting outside with their names on the waitlist. Our party of 2 was behind around 12 other parties and it took us approximately 30 minutes to be seated from the time we had arrived. It is 100% worth while if you can wait! I got the Hako Tonkatsu! It is pretty filling, and I always fail to finish it all (It is really good the next day heated using an airfryer). The tonkatsu is always so crispy and juicy! The katsu sauce rich and thick, and adds that extra layer of flavor when paired with the katsu and rice. It comes with a shredded lettuce salad beneath the katsu and a side of miso soup. One of my favorite tonkatsu place in Irvine in my opinion! It's so good that there's always a wait for this place. Most of the time I'd be ordering it through the phone and taking it as takeout since it takes about 15-20 mins. But when it comes to eating there, expect to wait about 20-40 mins once you put yourself on the waitlist. It can also be quite loud and hectic inside. But it is worth the wait cause the food is really good and they do come out fairly fast. I always get their Hako Tonkatsu or Hire-Katsu and they're both so good. Not a lot of places unfortunately use pork but chicken for their Katsu, which I prefer pork over chicken. It's all so fresh and crispy! Even some of their appetizers and salads are really good too so I highly recommend. I knew this place was going to be good the moment I walked in because we snagged the last empty table and it was 5 pm on a weekday! It seemed like every table ordered the tonkatsu. I ordered the curry tonkatsu and my friend ordered the cheese tonkatsu. The portions were huge! You got a large piece of tonkatsu with a side salad, a scoop of rice, a bowl of miso soup, curry sauce, tonkatsu sauce and some pickled radish and jalapeños. The tonkatsu was perfectly fried golden brown with tender meat. The curry was mild but flavorful. Loved the salad dressing-kind of reminded me of thousand island. The food here is solid and the portions are extremely generous. Small place, but feels solidly cozy with extremely friendly staff. They serve their food in trays, which helps keep everything together. Also, love the chopsticks since they're nice and smooth so I won't fear getting splinters. Located in a strip mall, Hako is a small Japanese restaurant offering their popular Katsu meals and a small selection of other Japanese appetizers and sushi rolls. We arrived at a later lunch hour on a Friday where the restaurant was packed. We put ourselves on the wait list. While told the wait was about 20 minutes, it ended up only a ten minute wait. My party of two was seated at a larger table. Our server quickly came to take our drink and food order and continued to check in on us periodically throughout our meal. We opted for the cheese katsu meal that comes with cabbage salad, miso soup and rice. We also ordered the Love roll, baked salmon atop a California Roll with unagi and spicy mayo sauce (the latter we requested to put on the side). This was perfect for a lighter lunch and at a moderate price. I particularly appreciated the higher quality custom chopsticks either the "Hako" name printed on them. We waited about 20 minutes for a table, but exploring Zion Market and the shops next door made the time go by quickly. Eventually, we got seated and didn't have to wait long to order. The katsu was perfectly crunchy on the outside, and the pork was incredibly tender and full of flavor. I've never had fried pork that practically melts in your mouth like that. It was nicely complemented with the spicy curry, which wasn't too spicy (more like a Japanese medium spice level). It also came with house-made katsu sauce, which had a unique creamy consistency that tasted richer, smoother, maybe even better than the typical sour/tart sauce. The meal also included miso soup and a cabbage salad on the side. I wanted to try the gyoza, so I made my meal a combo for an extra $3, and it was the best decision. The gyoza tasted like it had just come out of the fryer, perfectly cooked, juicy, and packed with flavor. With the generous portion size, we had enough left overs for another meal. Once again, I'm kicking myself for having this spot bookmarked for years but only trying it today. We came on a Sunday around noon and the place was already buzzing (line out the door, takeout orders flying out nonstop.) Inside, it's loud, bustling, and a little tight for bigger groups - lots of families and small friend gatherings. Honestly, I don't know how anyone carries a proper conversation here, but let's get to the food. We originally came for the katsu, but were pleasantly surprised by how much variety the menu had - appetizers, noodle dishes, and even sushi rolls, all at really reasonable prices. Agedashi Tofu - My favorite way to have tofu, and they nailed it here. Crispy, light, and flavorful. Curry Tonkatsu - I'll admit, I thought the katsu would be dry since it looked thin, but it was easily one of the best I've had in Orange County. Generous portion with curry, salad, miso soup, and sauce - solid 9/10. The only miss was the rice, which was dry and tasted a little old. Hopefully just a one-off. All our proteins were super crispy and not so greasy, which I appreciate. I enjoyed everything about this meal. The batter had such a satisfying texture, and the fish was so flaky and tender. My only complaint was that it needed a tad bit more salt. - Potato croquette: Crispy exterior with creamy potato inside. Not really a fan of potatoes, but it was nice to try. The tartar sauce that was served on the side was a flavor bomb - it also paired very well with the fish katsu we had ordered. - Takoyaki: The other party enjoyed this dish, albeit not my preference of appetizer - Rainbow roll: We both agreed that the rice ratio was a bit too much. A family member had Hako catered for a party and I couldn't wait to try out the restaurant in person. It tasted good even for take out so I knew it'd have to be even better fresh. And it sure was. It was like having Thanksgiving dinner, that's how content I was after stuffing my face. Service was good and very accommodating. Presentation is superior and most pleasant.
