My husband and I got food poisoning from here yesterday. Warning - don't get the vegetables. They were sour. I should have read reviews prior to coming as another review mentioned the spoiled vegetables. Portions aren't great. Katsu is smaller than previous Coco visits and we all could have decreased the rice portion as we ran out of curry before finishing the rice. Their curry to "regular" rice ratio is off. They also didn't provide spoons for the curry rice. When we asked for spoons, the person in charge mentioned they were out. How does a curry place run out of silver spoons? Her answer was that people steal them and everyone else was using them. Offered us soup spoons. We can't eat curry with a fork so we took the soup spoons and asked them to provide the silver spoons when they do get them again. Halfway through the meal I noticed new tables were getting silver spoons again. No offer of silver spoons to the tables who didn't get them. They have a waitlist here, which is to be expected for a restaurant in DJ. We had to wait almost 30 minutes before being seated (this was over the estimate on the website). Once seated, you order on your own on an iPad. Our food came out pretty quickly. I got the minced beef cutlet, which I've gotten at other locations before. Here it was much smaller than normal and the beef itself was dry and overcooked. Coco's curry is always good, but I was a little disappointed in my cutlet. First time at Coco Ichibanya and the food definitely did not disappoint. The portions are huge and the price is great. I ordered 2X Garlic Naan, Curry Udon & Chicken Cutlet Omelet. For three, this was more than enough and we had leftover. The curry itself tasted great. The omelet was alright; I would just get the regular Chicken Cutlet next time. The curry udon was simple yet very hearty & filling. The food came out within 10 minutes so pretty quick despite how busy it was. We didn't get checked up on at all but understandable since it was busy and late in the evening. The reason why I'm giving it a 1* is the service. One of the workers (pink or red/black hair) asked us if Garlic Cheese Naan was ours and we said yes since she was speaking very fast. As soon as we realized it wasn't order, we corrected ourselves and exchanged with the server for our Garlic Naan. Not sure she was upset that we accepted the wrong order on accident, but she gave us an attitude the rest of the night. She placed our plate on the edge of the table and walked away. Despite the number of great Japanese restaurants in Orange County, there has been a surprising lack of restaurants specializing in Japanese curry. Thankfully, CoCo Ichibanya is a major Japanese chain that was able to make it here to Orange County, and it is quite good. As of 2025, they have two small adjacent spaces: one for the typical dine-in experience and another for convenient takeout, Uber Eats orders, and similar pickup options. One of the things I have always liked about CoCo Ichibanya is that you can specifically customize your curry's spice level. As someone who likes medium spice, getting around Level 4 or 5 hits the mark for me: it is hot enough to be memorable, but not enough to burn my mouth. They also have a lot of meat options to complement the curry, such as pork and chicken cutlets, beef cutlets, omelets, shrimp, and more. While I do not think this is my favorite curry of all time (I still miss Curry House) it is definitely a very solid option whenever I am in the mood for Japanese curry. read more

My husband and I have come here several times within the past few months and it has quickly become a favorite in the Aliso Viejo area. I always get the Chicken Cutlet Curry with Spice Level 5 (out of 10) and it is perfect. I am a spicy food lover and can't believe that level 5 has so much heat that it gets my nose running. The chicken is crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. I have also had the chicken cutlet with vegetable curry and it came with carrot and potato chunks which was also amazing. Husband tried the curry with shrimp at spice level 1 and he really enjoyed his meal as well. He wasn't even hungry when he ordered this dish and he licked his plate clean. That's when you know the food is really good. I love the little radish condiment they have on every table as well. Every time we have come here, the little jars of radish are filled to the brim and we never have to beg for more. I come to find out there are two separate doors for the 2 and 1 business. There's a wall dividing the take out and dine-in business. It feels as if they are 2 different restaurants. The left side is take out. The right side is dine-in. I ordered via GrubHub. Pickup was easy once I walked through the correct door. The food was fresh and tasty. The crunchy and crispy fried chicken katsu was exactly as it should be and not greasy. The flavor of the curry regular spicy level was moderately spicy. Word to the wise - this is located at the infamous Diamond Jamboree plaza, so if you come at peak dinner time or weekends make sure you have a full tank of gas and a bad attitude to find parking. Yelp waitlist can't save you on this one. I had the omelette chicken katsu curry and my wife had the same with the classic pork. I recommend to dine-in as the signature omelette curry is only available as such. It was delicately rich so it somehow still felt like a light meal despite the deep-fried, sauced up goodness. Immensely satisfying and addictingly seasoned with an unmistakably unique flavor profile. It took all of my willpower not to lick the plate clean in public. A top-tier takeout meal as a result. Service was fine but more akin to quick-service rather than full. Best suited for solo / couple diners because of this and the relatively smaller space. Generally intimate and quiet setting with apparent focus on minimal interaction as you order and pay with your phone. I take it as efficient but large groups looking for a more traditional restaurant experience may be disappointed in this regard. Now for the sole slight negative: this is comfort food with ironically cutthroat pricing. The taste and vibe alone make this a 5* joint, but I have to take one off for the "nickel & dime" pricing. Every single add-on possible is charged for and at rather elevated amounts. The most egregious to me as a capsaicin junkie is the scaling surcharge for spice level. I assume they just add more spice powder to achieve this but glad to be corrected if I'm wrong. Max level spice is 10 which will run you a whole extra $1 for likely fractions of a cent worth of powder. Aren't we spicelords already punishing ourselves enough? When the base price of a plate is already pushing $20 and tip is expected, this is pretty painful. Overall I do still recommend Coco Ichibanya here as it scratches a rather unique comfort food itch, but that comfort only lasts until the bill comes. read more

Service was friendly and efficient. The restaurant was clean. In terms of parking, if you want to find a spot during peak hours, be lucky, good, or both. Golden crispy on the outside & slightly tender inside. The curry sauce was rich, savory, and lightly sweet with a spice level at 3 that was just enough kick for me. I added asparagus, tomatoes, and cheese into the curry for a tasty upgrade. - Keema Naan (Garlic Cheese Naan & Regular Naan). Deeply spiced and meaty. The regular naan is delicious (really soft and chewy), but the garlic cheese naan is where it's at! I love cheese, so it's obvious why I said what I said. - Omelet Curry with Chicken Katsu. The omelet was laid over the rice, though unlike classic omurice, it didn't spill out with silky, slightly runny egg when cut. Instead, the egg was fully cooked. The chicken katsu featured a crunchy exterior while the meat inside remained juicy and tender. Of course, the curry tied it all together. THE PARKING. This plaza is a dining magnet, and the parking lot reflects that. Even with plenty of spaces, competition is fierce. Expect to circle at least a couple of times before landing a spot. THE VERDICT. I circled this parking lot for almost 20 minutes before I finally found a spot. Luckily, I had two of my kids with me. I dropped them off while they went in and put our name down on their waitlist. When we were finally able to get a table, we were greeted immediately by our server. With our food and drinks out of the way, we got to chill a bit and observe everything. They were quite busy. The place was clean and tables well serviced by the staff. The food came quickly to my surprise but it sure tasted fresh. I really like that they have call buttons at each table in case you need your server. They were very quick to respond and were also attentive. What we ordered; 1) chicken cutlet - served with rice, spice level 5. I ordered this with tofu and okra as an added topping and ate it with the pickled radish. The heat from the spice level was great. The curry was well seasoned and not bland at all. 2) fried teriyaki chicken - appetizer. 3) Keema cheese French fries - so good. Tasted like chili due to the tomato based curry sauce. Overall, the food was great and service was wonderful. My daughters are actually wanting to go back already. So we'll have to return very soon.
