This occured on Wednesday, June 17 at 8pm. This review is in regard to the service received. The food is good as usual. Its mostly the customer service that is the biggest turn off. We ordered through the QR code that was made available on the table. I did notice that other tables had servers come in to take order but no one ever came to our table. So we opted to ordering via the QR code. Everything is paid once the order has been made. Our total came up to around $113. We were about half way through our meal when the sever with pink highlights in her hair came up to us to verify our order. She repeated an order that sounded ALMOST identical to ours however, the price was set at $89 which really confused us since we already paid $113 for our entire order. Then this server got impatient and told us "It's a YES or NO question... Is this your order or not? Do you not know?" Again, we were mostly confused as to why she presented us with a tab of $89 when we already paid $113. And not just that, we were still mid-way through our meal. First time at Coco Ichibanya and the food definitely did not disappoint. The portions are huge and the price is great. I ordered 2X Garlic Naan, Curry Udon & Chicken Cutlet Omelet. For three, this was more than enough and we had leftover. The curry itself tasted great. The omelet was alright; I would just get the regular Chicken Cutlet next time. The curry udon was simple yet very hearty & filling. The food came out within 10 minutes so pretty quick despite how busy it was. We didn't get checked up on at all but understandable since it was busy and late in the evening. The reason why I'm giving it a 1* is the service. One of the workers (pink or red/black hair) asked us if Garlic Cheese Naan was ours and we said yes since she was speaking very fast. As soon as we realized it wasn't order, we corrected ourselves and exchanged with the server for our Garlic Naan. Not sure she was upset that we accepted the wrong order on accident, but she gave us an attitude the rest of the night. She placed our plate on the edge of the table and walked away. About 10 minutes into our meal, she places the bill at the edge of the table, which we thought was odd. So 3 stars. Came here to celebrate the end of my school year and graduation. It was a party of 6. The wait was about 30mins and for a Friday night in that area it was great. We finally sat down, but our table didn't have a button to request service so we had to keep trying to get the attention of the waitress. She finally came and took our order but she forgot one dish. And so we flagged her down to let her know and she basically asked us "are we sure we are missing an order?" Um if she'd look at our table she could see that everyone had a dish but one person. She proceeded to put the order in but we had to wait to all eat together until the dish came out. The food itself was amazing as per usual. This time I tried the crispy chicken curry. It was delicious. The chicken wasn't so crispy and oily. It was more like air fried. The curry was delicious. I also had a side of naan bread which pairs perfectly with the curry. I love curry and I go crazy for that Coco. If you be hating I go loco. It's one of my favorite curry spots and it's not often when I'm in Irvine, so I had to drop by. We ordered the chicken cutlet omelet curry and the vegetarian croquette curry. We also got the garlic cheese naan on the side to dip in the sauce. If you like spicy get the level 5, but if you not tryna sweat go for the level 2 then. Bof dishes were delicious and the curry sauce flavor profile is on point. A 5/5 for sure, that's on god. The curry here is honestly pretty good! I wouldn't say it's groundbreaking or a lot better than other places I've been to, but I like to come here specifically for the variety/customization, and their cheese naan. Eating cheese naan with curry just makes it taste so much better! The portions are also fairly big, and it's about $16-$18 a plate, so it's averagely priced. The inside of the restaurant is clean. It's not super big but not too small either, but it does seem like quite a wait accumulates on weekends. Since it's in Diamond Jamboree, it can be busy, and parking here is also a nightmare. The service is fairly quick and servers have always been helpful and attentive. Overall, it's a good spot. The iconic Japanese comfort food stateside. If you've had any kind of Japanese curry or even the original, then this will not disappoint taste wise for you. Word to the wise - this is located at the infamous Diamond Jamboree plaza, so if you come at peak dinner time or weekends make sure you have a full tank of gas and a bad attitude to find parking. Yelp waitlist can't save you on this one. I had the omelette chicken katsu curry and my wife had the same with the classic pork. I recommend to dine-in as the signature omelette curry is only available as such. It was delicately rich so it somehow still felt like a light meal despite the deep-fried, sauced up goodness. Immensely satisfying and addictingly seasoned with an unmistakably unique flavor profile. It took all of my willpower not to lick the plate clean in public. A top-tier takeout meal as a result. Service was fine but more akin to quick-service rather than full. Best suited for solo / couple diners because of this and the relatively smaller space. Generally intimate and quiet setting with apparent focus on minimal interaction as you order and pay with your phone. I take it as efficient but large groups looking for a more traditional restaurant experience may be disappointed in this regard. Now for the sole slight negative: this is comfort food with ironically cutthroat pricing. The taste and vibe alone make this a 5* joint, but I have to take one off for the "nickel & dime" pricing. Every single add-on possible is charged for and at rather elevated amounts. The most egregious to me as a capsaicin junkie is the scaling surcharge for spice level. I assume they just add more spice powder to achieve this but glad to be corrected if I'm wrong. Max level spice is 10 which will run you a whole extra $1 for likely fractions of a cent worth of powder. Aren't we spicelords already punishing ourselves enough? When the base price of a plate is already pushing $20 and tip is expected, this is pretty painful. I come to find out there are two separate doors for the 2 and 1 business. There's a wall dividing the take out and dine-in business. It feels as if they are 2 different restaurants. The left side is take out. The right side is dine-in. I ordered via GrubHub. Pickup was easy once I walked through the correct door. The food was fresh and tasty. The chicken katsu curry (4 stars) is crispy without an oily, greasy, or burned taste. The variety of spice levels available for the curry work well when going with people whose spice tolerance, or lack thereof, differ. The level I selected cost a little less than the spicier ones. The mild curry I pchose was creamy, smooth and savory. The only reason I'm taking one star off is the rice (3 stars). It doesn't taste as good to me as store bought brands like Nishiki. Parking is sometimes difficult here and we ended up stuck in line/not moving in the parking structure for at least 10 minutes. This location has all indoor seating available and the service is very quick. There are different prices for various add ons (ex. Amount of rice and spice level) and it's good to know exactly what you want within a few minutes of being seated. They mentioned that the kitchen was a little behind when we sat down but we were still able to get our food at a decent time. The curry is very savory and the rice is always perfectly fluffy. The chicken cutlet was crispy and they serve a good amount of meat with the dish. They had an extra naan so they gave it to us with our meal and it was a good addition to the meal. Ordered the chicken cutlet veggie curry and the carrots tasted sour (not pickled sour, but spoiled sour.) My mom tried it too and agreed, and we both spit it out. We told the server, and they remade it, but my mom could clearly see the kitchen and watched them throw out an entire bin of pre-portioned vegetables. What's surprising is we were there around 4 PM, so this should've been caught earlier. The remake was fine, but there was barely any apology and no one checked back afterward.
