Such a great breakfast stop. The view is amazing and the food was super tasty. Not your average options so if you are looking for simple this is not it. They offer yummy elevated options. They had make everything so be patient for your server.
We stopped for a coffee on our way to the North Shore as we were feeling a bit sleepy. What a beautiful, serene place! They serve 00% Kona coffee. The staff were super friendly and welcoming. We got a cold brew for $7. They all come in 16oz cups. It was very tasty. What a lovely place to have a coffee!
The food was good. We enjoyed everything we had. Customer service was fantastic. They go out of the way to make you feel at home. Ambience is quiet and friendly.
This is the best coffee on the island. You can even take little roasters and tStings sessions. Or sip your coffee in the balcony overlooking the ocean or else take your coffee to go! After a hike at Crouching Lion Summit this spot hit the spot before going to Lanikai back to chill and on to Waikiki.
Super yummy, quick service, great views. What more could you ask for? We ate next door at Crouching Lion and decided to come back for breakfast and coffee the following day. Happy that we did!
There is a "hidden" beach not too far from this location that my family members (who's lineage on Oahu dates back to the 1870's) recently shared with me. On a recent Sunday, I spent the better part of the early morning walking upon the hallowed sands of this hidden beach, Then only a few minutes later, my family lead me to discovering another gem...the Hala Tree Cafe. In an effort to, "cut to the chase", (You know..so that you can get on with your day), I am going to do something that might seem weird. I now shall spare the reader from having to wallow through lengthy flowery descriptions and praise about the food, drinks and service at Hala-- and instead, I shall now jump to my concluding comments... Commence jump to final comments in 3... 2..... 1...... As I drove home along the winding and rainswept Kamehameha highway, that morning, I thought to myself, "How lucky can one guy get...? In the matter of a single lazy Sunday morning, I was treated not only to one of the most beautiful spots in all of Hawaii, but also to an adorable gem of a restaurant-- with some truly-amazing flavorful coffee drinks. Dare I mention the chai tea concoctions? And what about those biscuits that, as soon as I had my first bite, I immediately felt compelled to break-off a few bits, and share them with those who were blessing me with their presence at that table... a salt-air-kissed table, with breathtaking panoramic views of Oahu's windward coast. As I experienced it, I felt a deep appreciation for the fact that "the powers that be in the universe" allowed things to line up so perfectly on the space /time continuum to make this moment possible. *It actually was pretty serene, and as we chatted over coffee and our light breakfasts, I gave a silent word of thanks to what ever powers might be listening. But then suddenly, my thoughts filled with visions of this special place being overwhelmed by hordes of, "perfect biscuit and coffee seeking" individuals. I realized what I had to do. Just as that beach's location has been a, "kept-and-hidden" secret for generations (revealed only to a select-few, in order to protect it from its own perfect self.).. Hala Tree Cafe must also be kept a secret. I can not, in good conscience, allow my words to contribute to the sullying of the experience! A sacred duty of stewardship and conservation has been thrust upon me. I must protect this, "most-special of places". For it's own good, it must remain hidden from the huddled masses and wretched refuse who would come seeking its soul-reviving coffee, it's wonderful baked goods, and its nurturing and gentile pace of life. Therefore... If you happen to be reading this, please swing a pocket watch, with a gentle and rhythmic motion, in front of your face. You are getting sleepy.... sleeeeee-py... sleeeeee-peee. Take a deep, slow breath. You are relaxing deeper and deeper... drifting off. drifting off..driftng...(this last word is whispered)... off. When i snap my finger you shall feel yourself falling into a deep, deep, peaceful sleep. You shall then be under my comforting and caring power. (*sound of a snap). When you arise, you shall not remember anything about this place. And those wonderful tastes that linger in your mouth and that peaceful content feeling in your soul..? Ignore them. They are just part of your dream. My daughter says that I'm weird and dumb. "Dad, you're dumb!" is often followed by, "And you are Sooooo weird." I think she might be right. But in all sincerity, I hope that others can enjoy the quiet serenity and wonderful food and drink that this place offers. And I have not even mentioned how the staff here is exceptionally welcoming and caring. But, I do seriously feel that if too many people come a calling, it could be spoiled. So, what do you say?... we keep this between you and I? (*knowing wink and shared head- nod)
Coffee shop on Windward Oahu, up the road from Kualoa Ranch! My husband and I first heard of Hala Tree a few months ago from a sponsored Instagram ad of their roasted Kona coffee beans. Ordering their beans was appealing to us as it would save us a trip to the Big Island. Hubby decided to order one bag of their Medium Roast and Red Bourbon beans, both 100% Kona coffee! Coffee purist and local barista friends tell us 100% Kona coffee" is a marketing scam. Scam or not, these coffee beans taste fresh, especially when brewed as pourover or as a cold brew! Red Bourbon is mostly fruity and somewhat nutty, while the medium roast is an overall tasty, nutty flavor. We love that each bag of coffee beans includes a QR code to trace the date and location of bean roasting. Ok, this review should really be about the cafe itself! To my surprise, after a work trip in Kualoa Ranch, a coworker suggested we drive up the street to check out Hala Tree Cafe. As a fan of their coffee beans, I was excited. The cafe itself faces the ocean and is attached to The Crouching Lion restaurant and bar. Hala Tree is spacious and open air, yet covered. The cafe has a lanai (outdoor seating) and "indoor" seating, including couches. I ordered an iced Hawaiian Mocha. I was pleasantly surprised that the chocolate wasn't too sweet and had a good cacao flavor. The coffee flavor was just right, too! Strong, but smooth. Since my husband wasn't with me, but didn't want him to miss out, I ordered him a cold brew without ice. I went ahead and took a sip of his cold brew. I loved it. It wasn't sour or burnt at all. It reminded me of the Hala Tree Medium Roast. Considering their beachside ambiance and the fact that they roast and sell 100% Kona Coffee, prices were reasonable! Non-coffee drinkers can enjoy fruit drinks or matcha lattes. They sell pastries as well. I ordered a peanut butter ball, sweet peanut butter rolled up in oats and chocolate chips. It was a bit on the sweet side, but I think it's intended to be washed down with strong coffee. I highly recommend Hala Tree Cafe if you need a pitstop on your way to PCC, Papa Ole's, La'ie, Kahuku, Hau'ula, or on your way out from Kualoa Ranch! This place is appealing to both locals and tourists!
Ambience 5 because of the awesome view of the ocean, not minding the power line running along the road or the trucks on HWY 93. Food 5, loved freshly baked banana bread, biscuits and also using the apple banana which costs more. Service 5. Things can not be perfect but can improve. Patio tables were dirty I ended up cleaning first. After I wiped it off, it was still very sticky. Great place to stop and take a restroom break and enjoy their lighter fare with some awesome Kona coffee.
I tried one of their late Summer specials; it was their Hibiscus Cold Brew. This was very refreshing...just the right amount of sweetness from the cold foam. Roselles on top was an attractive garnish. Also, I took the north entrance at 10mph...the slower speed and lack of traffic allowed for a smoother entry.
Hala Tree is without a doubt my favorite cafe in the world. Yes, I know that sounds like a hyperbole, but I'm telling the truth! I will drive up from town any day to enjoy a fresh cup of Hala Tree. The coffee is fresh from their farm on Kona and everything from seed to cup is handled in-house. The ambience of the cafe is incredibly relaxing, especially combined with the surrounding views. If you love mocha, I recommend ordering the Hawaiian mocha, which blends their Red Bourbon coffee with local Manoa chocolate! But honestly, their coffee is so good that it also is incredible in black by itself too.
Tried the mango matcha and I think it was the mango that tasted weird so I don't recommend that drink. I believe the matcha probably would've been fine so I would try it again. It's a very nice place to relax and enjoy beach views. Their peanut butter oat balls are delicious. Parking is good because they have a lot.
Food was okay.. Tables were sticky..... The avocado toast was $16 for a full Enjoyed it. paid over $58 for two coffees and two breakfast meals with a side of fruit and toast. Views are nice but the drive wasn't worth it
Eh, the view is better than the food. I was exited to try this place as it looked amazing. Esthetics are there but everything we tried food wise was bland and we didn't feel it was worth it. Oatmeal with fruit - premade and oats were dry. Fruit was brown and wilted. Egg bites - zero flavor. Needed at least everything bagel seasoning or something!! Mango dragonfruit chia - even-though fruit was "fresh" it had zero flavor. I usually love chia seeds with fruit! Avocado toast - look amazing but again no flavor. It was also extremely difficult to eat without everything falling off. I lost at least half of the toppings- so sad. Iced Matcha latte - decent but nothing special. Should have tried the mango one! It's a beautiful space with a nice lanai that you can sit and see the beach. Service was good but with the price and taste, I probably won't return.
This place is sort of an Instagram gem. Beautiful location and well decorated with friendly, helpful and polite staff. You could make a visit Oahu flyer taking pictures here. The food and drinks are also so obviously fresh and well presented it just sets the tone for a nice relaxing break. Pricing is reasonable and you have to consider the great service and sitting in the open air overlooking the ocean with delicious drink and snack. Such a great vibe here and not to be missed if you have some time or are looking to take a break and check out for a few. read more

If you have a little time to spare before your tour at Kualoa Ranch, make a quick stop at Hala Tree Café it's just down the road and absolutely worth it. This charming little café has such a relaxed, local feel. It's tucked upstairs above what seems to be a coffee roasting area, which adds to its cozy, tucked-away vibe. The coffee was delicious- fresh, flavorful, and exactly what you want before heading out on an adventure. What really makes this spot stand out, though, is the view. You get a beautiful oceanfront backdrop while you sip your drink, making it a perfect place to slow down for a bit. It's also super convenient, located right off the main road, so it's an easy and worthwhile stop. Overall, it's a cute and scenic coffee shop that's perfect for a quick break; highly recommend if you're in the area. read more

I needed a coffee and was in the area, went right before close. I saw they have Ube which is my favorite, so I got an iced ube latte with oat milk. It was about $8.50 for the latte. Something I'm worried about is how sweet lattes can be, but this latte was perfectly sweet. Usually I do half sweet, but no need for this latte. I liked the flavor, but it was pretty faint and hard to taste the Ube. I wish it had a bit more Ube flavor. But overall I enjoyed the drink and would return again. I really like the inside as well as there was cute decor and I like the view from the shop! read more

Hala Tree Cafe is located near The Crouching Lion restaurant. Free parking in the gravel lot. Restrooms and lot shared with the restaurant. Seasonal drinks are fun and delicious! Beautiful cafe, high quality coffee. My boyfriend loved his blueberry matcha--not too sweet. I enjoyed my iced ube latte. Customer service is friendly. True aloha vibes. Highly recommend! read more

Love the view and the vibes here!!! This review is somewhat unconventional because the day we visited they had no power. Nonetheless, service was great. Ordered the cold brew ube drink, avocado toast with onion and feta topping, and GF almond cake with lilikoi topping. Everything was great! Very cute space. Nice and open with a nice patio to enjoy your drink. The matcha drinks looked really good coming out the bar. We got a cold brew and Hawaiian mocha and was happy with it. On the super hot day heading into the north shore these coffee drinks were perfect. They have their own parking lot so it nice. read more

Cute cafe with a nice view of the ocean. It's quite spacious with plenty of seating inside and on the terrace. The coffee and Hawaiian mocha were both great. We also got the breakfast plate and chia pudding. Service was okay and a little slow. They had clean bathrooms and easy parking right outside. read more

We recently visited Hala Tree Cafe coffee lab for one of their coffee classes. They offer a few different options, and we chose the brewing class. That was a great fit for someone new to the world of coffee but curious to learn more. It was a gift for my husband, who's a coffee fan. There were only us as participants which I think was just luck, but it ended up feeling like a private session. The instructor (I wish I remembered his name!) is the founder of the cafe's coffee lab and clearly knows what he's doing. Very experienced, very knowledgeable, and generous with his time and answers. We experimented with different brewing variables (grind size, water temperature, and brew time) and tasted how much the flavor changed with these adjustments. I wouldn't call myself a coffee expert now, but I've definitely gained a better understanding of what goes into a good cup. Also worth mentioning: booking the class online was super easy. The website clearly showed available dates and times, and the whole process was smooth and quick. Overall really well-organized experience and something different to do on the island, especially if you're into coffee. read more

Drove by many times and finally had the time to make a quick stop! Unfortunately, we came near closing so they sold out of many of the foods. However, we still were able to try two pastries and their egg bites which were all super delicious! Beautiful view and outdoor seating. read more

SERVICE: fully staffed INTERIOR: seating in cafe n' on balcony, merch available for purchase EXTERIOR: walk up the stairs to the 2nd floor, next to The Crouching Lion WAIT TIME: 5-10 mins, drinks came out first then the biscuit PARKING: lot in front, can get filled up quickly OVERALL COMMENTS: have driven past this spot several times. Finally stopped by after finding out that they served matcha lattes. Unfortunately, was bummed to learn that matcha was unavailable the day I visited. Decided to try out their seasonal sesame butterscotch espresso latte for da hubz, which was bold with a hint of sweetness. I really liked their Ube espresso latte that was also bold but sweeter with the Ube syrup, which I preferred out of the two drinks. The star of the show was the warm buttermilk biscuit that had a crunchy exterior n' slight soft interior. Paired with butter n' blueberry jam made it the perfect lil' snack to go with our iced lattes. Just the cutest cafe located right across from the ocean. The views from the cafe are stunning but the food and blueberry matcha was evening better. One of the newest cafes on the North Shore! Very pleasant atmosphere and spacious space. We come here for the lilikoi almond cake which is gluten free. It is delicious. Lightly sweet, moist with a lilikoi frosting. My favorite dessert on the island. Which I regret may be sold out after this review... They also have ceremonial grade matcha. I do have to say after trying the iced blueberry matcha yesterday that it was on the grainy side and while I was excited for the homemade blueberry addition, it was underwhelming and also on the grainy side. I lived on Oahu for 10 years and this building was closed the entire time. So when I had a trip to hop over and saw that this building was open and running I stopped in to check it out. I love that there is a coffee shop here with the ocean view. The girls working were sweet and friendly. I love a coffee shop that makes their own flavored syrups and other goodies from scratch. So I tried the blackberry spice latte that was the special during that time. The latte was good however blackberry is a hard flavor profile to bring out. So it was muted in flavor. I also got the homemade biscuit which was yummy. One thing I wish they did that a lot of other coffee shops do else where that I have experienced is being able to get a flight of different drinks. There were so my drinks I wanted to try but cannot drink that many regular size drinks. But if I got a flight of 3-4 small drinks, I would then order a regular sized one with whichever one was my favorite. I hope this place sticks around because I would want to visit it again the next time I hop over to Oahu. read more

Great ambience, view of the water! I ordered an ice ube latte. It was yummy, feint taste of ube, which is fine because I don't want my coffee too strong in other flavors. A hint was good for me. The half star was just because of how expensive it was. I paid $8 for an ice latte, seems a bit steep. I guess you're paying for the view, which is great! Great place to grab breakfast/brunch with a view if you're over in Kaaawa! I went with my friend and we both found items that we enjoyed. I got the Smoked Salmon and Ube Latte and she got the Green goddess and Matcha Latte. As she is vegan, it was nice that they wrote Vegan next to those that are vegan. You order the food at the counter and they call you when everything is ready. With regard to parking, there is plenty in a private lot. read more

Every once in a while I find myself searching for something. I don't always know what it is exactly, but I know when I find it. I found it. My friend and I have been trying to find 'our spot' since we moved here this last year. Mostly searching for a coffee shop vibe. We've found good location but bad coffee. Good coffee but bad location. Then we found Hala Tree Cafe. Amazing location. Out of the way. With killer views. And amazing coffee. We came in on a day that it was pouring. And it was lovely. On the second floor, with indoor and outdoor seating we had a few choice on where to sit. We chose outside. By the time we left, I think there was only one table left in the whole place to sit. The service was amazing. They loved their jobs and you could tell. They were friendly and quick to chat and give recommendations. I got the PBB and added bacon. Made the mistake of getting a full and will get a half going forward because the portions were massive. They held the cinnamon for me when I asked to add bacon and I'm glad they mentioned it. I joked about my love of things Elvis style. My Hawaiian mocha was so good. More on the coffee side than chocolate, and I loved that. Prices were fair for it being Hawaii for the most part. A $9 mocha still makes this Seattle girl cry on the inside a little bit. We will absolutely be back! read more

Ended up for a little drive this afternoon to the north shore. Stoped over at Hala Tree for our iced matcha and chai lattes with oatmilk. I loved my chai drink. Their chai flavor is homemade. Strong but not overpowering. Will Order this drink again. Husband enjoyed his matcha drink. Barista was very friendly. Great customer service. Wished we stayed and sat for awhile. Sweet little coffee, pastie, breakfast/brunch spot next to the Crouching Loin. We stopped in after lunch at the Crouching Loin for a to go coffee. I got the coco riser and it was yummy . Super fresh tasting and not overly sweet. They had a good selection of breakfast foods and pastries but I was too stuffed to eat. This was a great spot for hikers to come in after a hike to get a bit and re-fuel. Service was kind and fast. Enjoyed finding this sweet little spot. read more

Stopped in here on the way to the beach before grabbing a drink at crouching lion. We got the avocado toast, which was delicious. However my only complaint was I wish the bread was toasted and the serving platter was bigger. The avocado/cherry tomato with olive oil drizzle and arugula was delicious but wished it was less bread and more delicious avo.
