We've passed Hunan Cafe many times, but when we suddenly noticed a Halal sign, we decided to give it a try--and we absolutely do not regret it. This place is a hidden gem. It's small but clean, with friendly service and excellent food quality. Prices are what you'd expect for the area, but a big plus is that there's easy parking. Most importantly, the food tasted genuinely authentic. The vegetables and meat had that perfect crunch--fresh, well-cooked, and flavorful without being heavy or greasy. Everything was so tender it barely needed chewing. We ordered the crispy beef, Singapore rice (I think!), and a few other dishes, and everything was spot on. Usually this place has good food at reasonable prices. I should have known to stick to the basics and the dishes which usually hit the spot. I tried something new, their "Thai" D Drunken noodle with Hala Beef. I mean it tasted fine. But it was actually Chow-fun with some jalapenos & basil thrown in with some bell peppers for color. The beef was tender and good. BUT where's the spicy, sweet, salty, sour & thai basil flavor? This had none of that. No fish sauce. No palm sugar. No thai chili peppers. No Thai basil. It was basically stir -fried wide noodles with some veg. It wasn't even spicy. $16.50!!! Please stick to just Chinese/Chinese-American food and leave the Thai food to the Thai people. This is my favorite Chinese takeout place,just for midweek dinner,when you are tired and want solid meal. Delivery is hit or miss,because of Uber of DoorDash issues,but food itself is really good. Shrimp and vegetables dish is packed with large juicy shrimp,vegetables are nicely cooked. They use mushrooms,squash and asparagus,those are nice. Delivery was late. Call restaurant and the said the drive was two blacks away from picking up. Still not shown, 2nd call the restaurant really could have cared less. Now over 50 minutes late. Dumplings were cold and looked day old. Kung pao chicken was under sauced and cold. Sezuan Sprimp, shrimp was overcooked and yes cold. The portions were average. The appetizers of spring rolls and crab Rangoon were quite dough forward. Not something I'd order again. We had a spicy chicken dish and it was predominantly celery and carrots. While the veggies seemed fresh and crisp, we'd asked for a small quantity of these vegetables. There was a small amount of chicken in our entree. The crispy beef was slightly spicy and sweet and overall it was our preferred dish from our order. The Szechuan green beans which is usually our staples for all Chinese restaurants was a disappointing. However I don't think take out is ever the best way to judge a restaurant's food. At any rate, overall I'd say this place is perfectly fine in terms of Carry out. Our food was very hot. Prepared hot and fresh however it just didn't suit our pallets. I recently ordered pickup from here and was very pleased with what I received. My order was ready within 15 minutes and everything came out hot and tasted fresh. The spring rolls were a nice, cheap starter option. They were crispy with really good flavor. The sesame chicken was tender on the inside and with the right amount of crunch on the outside with a healthy ladling of sauce and some nicely cooked broccoli. Walked in during a car inspection... and I hit the jackpot when I found this hidden gem! THE BEST DEAL IN TYSONS CORNER IS THEIR LUNCH SPECIAL. For under $10 you get a huge portion of fried rice, your choice one of one of many entrees (I like the beef and broccoli), and a spring roll. The spring roll is absolutely amazing each time, as good as you can get. I've never had anything here that wasn't perfectly executed, savory, well cooked, and well seasoned. I was expecting average, mass produced Chinese when I first walked in for a quick bite, but their food tastes far beyond average. I'd put their food up against any $30 / entree sit down Chinese place in the area. I now get deliver their food delivered often, and when I stop in, the employees (family owned) are as nice as can be. Outstanding service and the food is incredibly fresh. The veggies and meat, seafood are always fresh. I've now tried several different dishes here. Some standouts are the cashew chicken, twice cooked pork, chow fun dishes, fried rice, triple delight. They also have some very generous coupons available: eg a generous portion of excellent crab rangoons if you spend $30; free chicken fried rice if you spend $40; chicken pad Thai for $50 or a free general Tso's chicken if you spend $60. I've pick up food from Shamshiri express many times and last time I saw Hunan Cafes menu next door and just ordered today for dinner delivery and just had my food. It is the BEST Chinese food I've had in a long time around here. Usually beef dishes come with mystery meat but not at Hunan Cafe, it was like they got fresh steak Today andcut and stir fried it. Same with the vegetables the soup and the egg rolls. Outstanding meal very good service and prompt delivery. This is my new forever Chinese food take out delivery in Tysons. I highly recommend them. Ordered the Twice Cooked Pork Lunch Special. The egg roll that came with it was not good. A lot of vegtables and very greasy. The Fried Rice was good as a side dish but the Twice Cooked Pork was okay. It didn't have that strong flavor or that fatty melt in your mouth texture that comes with pork belly. Hunan Cafe is in the same area as China Express and is pretty new. You can tell the food is much fresher than a typical take out place. We enjoy the dishes a lot especially as a healthier alternative - they're a lighter, home cooked style that you don't feel guilty about eating more often as opposed to other places where the food is saucier/heavier. Happened to stop by this place while on my way back to work and decided to give them a try. I ordered their Hunan Shrimp and General Tso's Tofu. Their shrimp was large and numerous and had a healthy portion of hand cut vegetables. The General Tso's Tofu was on the sweeter end so I will likely ask for less sauce next time around. Overall, I am happy to see them open and hope they do well. It's a tough time for a lot of family businesses and they were very sweet and easy to talk with. FRESH, FRESH, FRESH!!!! The vegetables in the dishes are not frozen, every single thing is fresh! Delicious! Wow! The Chicken with Cashews is excellent and so is the Pepper Steak. We just can't get over how fresh everything is! Everything is delicious, even the fried items are fresh. You know how a lot of times fried items can have a slightly rancid taste? Not in this case! Wanted to try this place couple times before I posted a review. 1st time I got Kung pao chicken lunch special. It's a bit different than other places. Chicken is a crispy which was very good. Not a lot of peanuts which was great and Lots of fresh veggies. If you like your Chinese food very saucy and full of msg, this place is not for you. Food tasted horrible. All of the noodle dishes tasted like they use the same sauce on everything. The general tso chicken tasted like orange chicken. The service is horrible. I wasted $50 and as me and my daughter walked out, one of the workers follows me and accuses me of not paying because she didn't see my receipt. Of course she didn't because our waitress took the receipt, that's how it works, I sign it and leave it. She yells at us and tries to get us to go back inside. Over the past few months I have ordered "Chinese" (actually, Americanized Chinese) food for lunch MANY times from several different Chinese restaurants in the Tysons/Vienna/Oakton area, and today I am going to review several of them, so you can check out all of these reviews to see my conclusions. I have done takeout from this restaurant several times now, and after comparing it with many other places in the area, I believe they offer the best bang for the buck, at least when it comes to lunch. For one thing, their lunch portions are very large - I always get two meals from one order. For another, the quality of the ingredients is high. For example, they clearly use premium breast meat for their sweet and sour chicken - which is one of my favorite items on their menu. And the fried rice is the best in the area, IMO. Bottom line: delicious food in large quantities for low prices. Negatives? Just a couple - and no biggies. I wish their egg roll was a bit larger. It is a little bit smaller than some others in the area. Also, one time - but only one time - I got a piece of chicken with a huge (and I mean huge) piece of cartilage. That should not happen, but since it was only one time and only one piece, I think that can be overlooked. Bottom line is that after months of comparisons, and based on several meals, I rank them the best value in Chinese food in the Tysons/Vienna/Oakton area, at least for lunch takeout.
