We ordered: - a wrap - lamb - beef Disappointed. The lettuce, potatoes and rice were not fresh, so pulled down all the surrounding elements. The meat drippings to cook the rice and potatoes may have been old or overused. Lost the flavor profile they were aiming for. Gained the staleness of old broth. The service is great but the food is awful!!! I haven't been in this restaurant for about 20 years! the last time I ate it tasted amazing. sandwiches made well everything was well seasoned and it had some soul in it!!! this past week however was a completely different story. This is a local place. The customers are mostly Muslims who are looking for a halal friendly home cooked meal (i.e. it isn't a gentrified dating spot.) All of this means is that you get really nice no-frills food at a cheap price (plus you pick up the food at the counter, so no need to tip.) Other reviewers mentioned about the staff being rude. Actually, the guy who seems to be the boss is kind and friendly, but some of the other staff don't speak much English, so you do have to be patient when you place your order; however, I'm telling you... it's worth it. They also don't over salt the food (which is great if you have high blood pressure) and they don't put lot's of strange spices in the stuff. All in all, if you want to play 3 times the price at a fancy schamncy place that serves beer, go elsewhere. I usually get the Kofta Kabab but this time it was a bit burnt. I also like hungry man which includes sausage & other meats & is pretty damn good. I really like the Kofta Kabab too. Their steak is too dry & bland though. My brother choked on it & I thought he was gonna die. Their fries are ok. The salad is good. He can't stop raving about this place, so I finally decided to try it last night. My husband had his usual Kofta Sandwich. Since I'm not a big sandwich eater, I decided to try the hot menu bar. I saw Lamb Shank and Beef Shank and could not resist, nor decide which to get lol. I asked the staff for his recommendation and he said, "I can do half and half for you if you like." Yay!! This place has hearty homemade food. Tasty Moroccan style cuisine. Their fries are seasoned southern style and are very tasty. They are not skinny and oily but medium thickness and crunchy. Their sandwiches are big and full of the meat of your choice.... (no pork). Their dishes are generous but they only give you the option of rice, vegetables, or fries with their meat. Just had a great meal here after midnight with the fellas . We got the chicken with mixed vegetables and rice . Chicken was tender and juicy with a nice hint of lemon . The juice from the chicken really went well with the veggies and the rice as well and was very freshly prepared which is amazing for a quick meal after the gym after midnight . What I hated however was that almost every table had left over messy dishes on them . There were atleast four guys behind the counter and that should be more of a priority to encourage new customers like myself to dine in . read more

There are broadly two styles, .Qidra style Tajine, which is made with "Saman" (clarified butter); and the Muqawlli style, which is made in olive oil. Dried fruits like dates, apricots and plums are added to give it its unique taste. Needless to say, there are spices, some very exotic ones, that additionally flavor the dish. In some places, they make the Tajine by smoking the earthen pot over a gentle olive wood fire. The beauty of the dish is that it is gourmet proof. When it comes to Tajine, any day of the week, I will take a Grand Ma over a fancy Michelin Chef. BUT sadly there are very few real Tajine places in the tri state area. There is hardly anyone who can do it like Tanjawi Sandwich Shop. This place consistently gets it right. Yes, it started off decades ago, as a hole in the wall, sandwich shop with a mile-long line waiting to order food. It is a messy and chaotic place. Recently it has expanded and has added a few tables. It is still messy and chaotic. But very few can compete against this humble place in terms of the sandwich or its Tajine. Generally, it has at least two Tajines (Chicken and Lamb Shanks) but occasionally has some very unusual Tajines also. Fans of grilled meats will be thrilled. They have a vast selection. The lamb sausage, Merguez, is outstanding (sandwich or platter). They have grilled Rocky Mountain Oysters on the menu too. Start off a meal at Tanjawi with the best Harira Soup in United States. (period). Harira is a legendary hearty soup. made of tomato, lentils, and chickpeas. Includes meat, but can be vegetarian. Then have a Tajine or Grilled Meat for your main dish. Save some room, for the mint tea and a flat bread pancake with honey (desert). Yes, this place is a messy hole in the wall. Very chaotic, but who cares, the food is unparalleled. read more

They messed up my order. I ordered a 2 meat platter and a meat sandwich. They gave me two 2 meat platters and charged for two 2 meat platters which is more expensive than the sandwich. Their beef over cooked and chewy. Looks like they have been messing up the order tonight. I saw a few people are complaining about their orders too. If you can't handle it, just limit the capacity. I was not terribly impressed by my lamb kebab sandwich. This hole in the wall caught my eye after a few drinks. Picked up a lamb kebab sandwich. Excellent flavor, but not the best texture. Lamb was cooked very well, veggies were fresh, and the olives were a nice touch. But it didn't really hold together well. My sandwich was falling apart. It pretty much defeats the purpose of the sandwich. They don't have just falafel on the menu either. I ordered some anyway and they charged a dollar a piece which is pretty ridiculous. Walking around Astoria looking for a shawarma shop we stopped here as the other great shawrma spot was under renovation. Place had a little jam outside as there were a bunch of people ordering togo and waiting. The sitting area inside is more or less like a quick bite stool and table by the wall as the kitchen takes most of the space as it is needed with all the good stuff they have on the menu. Looking through the kitchen you can see all the great kebabs ready to be cooked and all the great lamb, beef and veggie broth trays. We started off by ordering a Chicken kebab , Falafel and kofta sandwiches, also beef and lamb broth platters with a large side order of french fries. Now the taste...... what can i say it just was amazing ...rightly cooked and the orders jsut came out all at same time rather than one at a time so we could all enjoy are food. Party of 5 killed a lot of food and we wanted more. Had a nice discussion with the owners who are Moroccan and gave us a good intro of their food which they said they order fresh meat everyday and marinate it with the basic ingredients ever. If you want some falling off the bone lamb, this is your place to go. The lamb shank here is so amazing. The meat literally falls off the bone and is perfectly cooked. They serve two big pieces of lamb shank with rice and it's so good. One order is good to split between two people and it's only $13.00! Served with a piece of bread. I come here frequently so I have ordered other things in the past. The cheeseburger is also good, just make sure to tell them to melt the cheese. Hands down my favorite delivery place in Astoria. They deliver "everywhere except Alaska and Hawaii". Yep - I give them points for showing Muslim people have a sense of humor too! I found this place completely by accident when one night I was roaming around Steinway at 3am, completely wasted and looking for a place to eat. Now I thank the food gods every day that even in my inebriated state, I had the presence of mind to pick up their delivery menu. As my wife says - when it comes to food, I have the eyes of a hawk. Yay for me! So far I've gotten the lamb shank and beef shank. If I had to use only one word to describe the food, it'd be - SUCCULENT!! For delivery, it doesn't get much better. I don't live close by but they usually get their food to me in about half an hour- and I always tip generously. I mean, 10 bucks for two pieces of lamb shank?? That's a steal. Calling it a sandwich shop is an understatement. They have deeee-licious Moroccan grilled and stuffed fish. And the lamb shank look very tempting even for a pescatarian. I have yet to try their seafood paella which is only available on the weekends. Forget the falafel, there are better ones just down the block. This place is definitely a must for meat lovers. The owner has done it right, using meat from his own meat shop a few stores down ( I know because I buy meat from there ) and has given it a Mediterranean twist to Subway style sandwiches. It's definitely a great spot to get food and takeout but the seating is limited and against the mirrored wall so if you like to watch yourself eat then be my guest and sit away. Food is fresh, and the beef is superb. The butchers create their ground beef similar to Pat La Frieda would and if you don't know Pat La Frieda then you don't know meat. Out of all the exotic food places in Steinway Street, this tiny shop is by far one of my favorites places to frequent. The sandwiches this place offers are packed with your choice of meat, fries, and salad, all in 8 inch baguette. My favorite sandwiches are the kofta and merguez, both perfectly cooked with just the right amount of spice. All of the sandwiches are less than $6 bucks if I'm not mistaken. Also, service here is pretty fast and they offer free delivery. The Sandwich Shop is relatively small compared to other food joints on the same block. Limited seating is offered in the back, but since the shop tends to be crowded with customers, it can be a bit noisy for some people. I've always preferred having my food to go and eating it in the comfort of my home. The awesome food and the cheap prices seem draws in a lot of loyal hungry customers, myself included. read more

However, this rating is based not only upon that delicious sandwich, but also based upon my excitement for the future romance I plan to have with this place. The food looked insanely delicious. Everything is inexpensive (seriously, 8.50 for lamb tagine, 9.50 for a whole fish). I am freaking thrilled to live about 50 steps from this place. The best thing about my boyfriend is that he lives on Steinway Street. This is our go-to "It's Monday, I'm exhausted, but want a nice hot supper" place. We only ever get the half chicken with vegetables or rice take out and we split it. It would be a massive serving for one person - or great leftovers! The chicken is always deliciously falling off the bone. The rice and veggies are always tasty. The portions are super ample. The bread they give you to sop up the delectable sauce is warm. The best part is that the food is fresh, tasty, and cheap - $9 for two people to lean back on the couch and sigh from being full is a great deal. Also, the guys behind the counter are always smiling, kind, and now that they know me they throw in some desserts. It's always packed with people eating at the counter and having good conversations (that I can't understand. I'm assuming it's jovial) but the service is quick.
